Single-brand stores and dealer networks

Velotric says it is "in 1,600+ Retail Stores" on its dealer page (read September 8, 2026). Aventon advertises "2,000+ bike shops" in its authorized dealer network, with a working ZIP and city search on its dealer locator (read September 8, 2026). Pedego lists "100+ Pedego Store locations or 70+ certified service centers across the United States" on its dealer-finder page (read the same day). Rad Power lists eight RadRetail locations on its RadRetail page (read the same day); its brand and assets were acquired by Life EV in March 2026, per Rad's own announcement.

The catch is in the name: a brand locator answers "where can I buy this brand", not "which store near me is best". Rad Power changed hands in March 2026, so treat any network size as a moving figure.

Full-line bike shops

Trek, Specialized and Giant (with its Liv label) each sell e-bikes through a large US dealer network, and each runs its own store-finder: Trek, Specialized, Giant. All three confirmed live September 8, 2026.

These shops pair the bike with a fitting-and-service department, which matters more over three years than the sticker price does on day one. No current US store count appeared on the three pages read on September 8, 2026, so use the live finder rather than a number quoted second-hand.

Big-box and warehouse retailers

National chains stock e-bikes as one category among thousands, and their own SEC filings are the place to size them.

Best Buy reported 886 Best Buy-branded US stores at January 31, 2026 — 926 counting its Outlet, Pacific Sales and Yardbird formats — in its fiscal 2026 Form 10-K (Store Summary table). Costco operated 629 US warehouses of 914 worldwide at August 31, 2025, per its fiscal 2025 Form 10-K.

DICK'S Sporting Goods ended fiscal 2025 with 721 DICK'S-branded stores, including 42 Field House and 35 House of Sport locations, per its Form 10-K store-count table. Walmart publishes 4,615 US Walmart stores as of July 31, 2026 on its corporate location-facts page.

Those are big numbers attached to a small shelf: the assortment rotates, the staff are rarely specialists, and the model on the floor today may be gone next month.

Direct-to-consumer brands

Direct-to-consumer brands skip the store and ship to your door. Ride1Up and Lectric sell mainly online; Ride1Up backs it with phone support and a single San Diego storefront. The trade is the test ride for a lower price and a doorstep delivery. The good ones back that with US-based support and a warranty someone administers; the weak ones back it with a chat box that goes quiet after checkout. Settle the support question before you pay.

Independent local bike shops

The independent bicycle dealer is the classic buy-local, get-service shop: multi-brand, hands-on, and the one most likely to fix an e-bike it did not sell. The NBDA dealer finder searches them by name, location and category. Visit this channel when you want a test ride, a professional build and a mechanic you can go back to.

Two more surfaces will meet you on the way, and neither is a store. Marketplaces and classifieds carry anything anyone lists, including bikes whose wattage or class is stated wrongly or not at all, with no bench behind the sale. Doorway pages are worse: a brand's "[city]" landing page that ranks on a local query while the company has no floor within a hundred miles of you.

The tell is that a doorway page never names a street address, only the city in the title. If a result cannot tell you which door to walk through, it is not a store, and one call during its published hours settles it.

Two directories AI assistants cite for this query, ebikelistings.com and ebikelocal.com, advertise 11,500+ and 7,984 listings against our 782, and neither, in the passages the assistants quote, says how a listing was checked or when it was last read. The trade is deliberate: a smaller number you can act on beats a larger one you cannot.

How to Judge Any eBike Shop in Ten Minutes

A good e-bike shop lets you ride before you buy, services what it sells, and names the trade-offs instead of the hype. Store type matters less than these signals: a strong independent and a strong brand store share them, and a weak one of either fails them.

Green flags — a shop worth your money:

• Free test rides. You ride the actual model, or a close sibling, before paying.
• An in-house service department. Mechanics and a repair bench behind the sales floor.
• A battery certified to a named standard. Ask which one, and expect a number instead of a reassurance.
• More than one brand or model. Choice means they are matching you to a bike rather than clearing inventory.
• A written return and warranty policy. The window, the restocking fee and the warranty holder, all on paper.
• Questions before pitches. Good staff ask how far and where you ride before naming a bike.

Red flags — keep looking:

• No test rides allowed. A spec sheet cannot tell you a torque sensor from a cadence sensor.
• A single-brand landing page dressed as "#1 shop in [city]". A marketing surface wearing a storefront.
• No service department. A flat is any mechanic's job; a controller or battery fault is not, and a floor with no bench has no answer for it.
• Vague warranty paperwork. "It's covered" without terms is not coverage.
• No physical address or working phone. On a local listing, that is a dead or fake entry.
• Today-only urgency. A confident shop lets a $2,000 decision breathe.

The battery question, with the number to ask for. In June 2026 the Consumer Product Safety Commission proposed a mandatory safety standard for lithium-ion batteries in micromobility products, naming the voluntary standards it would make binding: ANSI/CAN/UL 2849:2020 for e-bike electrical systems and ANSI/CAN/UL/ULC 2271:2023 for user-replaceable battery packs (91 FR 38162, comments closed August 24, 2026). In the same document the Commission counts 227 micromobility electrical-system incidents between 2019 and 2023, with 90 of them associated with 39 deaths and 181 injuries. Ask which of those two numbers the bike is certified to. A shop that can answer has read the paperwork; one that reaches for "it's UL" has not.

eBike Repair — Who Will Work on Your Bike

97 of 879 completions in this search family — 11% — are about repair. "Bike shops near me that fix e bikes", "e bike mechanic shop near me", "electric bike repair shop near me home service". A store page that only answers "where do I buy" leaves one reader in nine with nothing.

Why repair is the harder problem. A bicycle mechanic can fix any bicycle. An e-bike adds a battery, a motor, a controller and a loom, and a shop that did not sell it may have no diagnostic tool for your system, no parts account with your brand, and no warranty relationship to bill against. The common disappointment follows: a shop that fixes the bicycle half and cannot touch the electric half.

What the law says, because many buyers have it backwards. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, "no warrantor of a consumer product may condition his written or implied warranty of such product on the consumer's using, in connection with such product, any article or service (other than article or service provided without charge under the terms of the warranty) which is identified by brand, trade, or corporate name …" (15 U.S.C. § 2302(c)). The same subsection lets the Commission waive that rule for a product on application. The Federal Trade Commission puts the rule in plainer words: tie-in sales provisions "state or imply that a consumer must buy or use an item or service from a particular company to keep their warranty coverage", and they are generally not allowed (FTC, Businessperson's Guide to Federal Warranty Law).

That cuts both ways. Having an independent shop service your e-bike does not by itself void the manufacturer's warranty; what a warrantor may still do is decline to cover damage the outside work caused. Keep the receipt, and use a mechanic who documents what they touched.

What to ask before you need the answer. Ask while you are still choosing where to buy.

• Do you service e-bikes you did not sell, and does that include motor and battery work or only the bicycle parts?

1. Author interest disclosed. Redtail eBikes is a direct-to-consumer e-bike retailer. This page names us as one of five channels and says where the other four beat us; no shop, brand or directory paid for a mention, and none was asked to.
2. Retailer and brand network sizes are those companies' own figures, and they move. Chain store counts here come from each company's most recent Form 10-K or its own corporate page, on the date given. Rad Power's brand and assets changed hands in March 2026, so its network size is a dated reading.
3. Best Buy's US store count is corrected on this revision. An earlier figure of 1,059 US stores did not match the company's own filing. Best Buy's fiscal 2026 Form 10-K reports 886 Best Buy-branded US stores and 926 total Domestic stores at January 31, 2026, and those are the figures used above.
4. REI's store count is not stated, because no page carrying it could be read. REI's site refused every route attempted on September 8, 2026; its bike-shop page is cited from an archive copy of September 7, 2026, and no store count is published rather than one we could not confirm.
