How we verified this directory — Milad Ghobadibeygvand, BScN

Candidates came from OpenStreetMap, eight makers' dealer maps, the Wisconsin Bike Federation's statewide shop list, a Google Maps search of all 72 counties, every city and village of 2,000 or more, every town of 5,000 or more and the ZIP areas of Milwaukee and Madison, and the shops AI search engines named. Each one was read on its own website and on its Google Maps listing.

A store is listed when its own site offers e-bikes for sale or a maker's dealer map carries its address, and Google Maps shows it open. Rental counters, repair-only shops, mobile mechanics, vehicle and powersports dealers, and closed stores are left off.

Verified October 18 and 19, 2026; due again April 2027.

Quick Answer

There are 136 verified e-bike shops in Wisconsin as of October 19, 2026, in 87 communities across 42 of its 72 counties. Dane County holds the most, 23, and ten of Wisconsin's 12 cities of 50,000 or more have a store inside their city limits.

An e-bike rider in Wisconsin has a bicycle rider's rights and duties (§ 346.806(1)) when the motor is rated at 750 watts or less (§ 340.01(15ph)), and the state's income tax law offers no credit for buying one (rebates).

No counter close to home? Every e-bike we sell ships free within the contiguous United States (shipping policy), and our Wisconsin e-bike law guide covers where each class may ride.

Wisconsin's two most populous regions, Milwaukee County and South Central, hold 42 of the 136 stores listed here (30.9%) and 30.7% of the state's residents (Census Bureau 2025 estimates); the other 94 are spread across the remaining nine regions.

A mailing town is the post office's name for an area, not a city line: all three listed stores that print Milwaukee as their town stand inside its city limits; all sixteen listed stores that print Madison as their town stand inside its city limits. Each store was placed by its own point with the Census geocoder.

Across the state, twenty of the 131 listed stores that print a mailing town stand outside the place that town names (Census geocoder), so read the county before the address line when you plan a drive.

Every listing below gives you a street address, a phone number wherever a source confirms one, and a grade that tells you what proved the store sells e-bikes. The listings are grouped by the eleven Workforce Development Areas the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development draws, which between them take in all 72 counties (DWD policy 1.3), and within each region by the mailing town a store prints.

The cover shows the Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison, whose dome the Department of Administration calls "the only granite dome in the United States" (Wisconsin Department of Administration, read October 18, 2026).

Inside the limits of Wisconsin's 12 cities of 50,000 or more, ten have at least one verified store: Madison 18, Eau Claire 6, Milwaukee 3, La Crosse 3, Green Bay 2, Oshkosh 2, Janesville 2, West Allis 2, Appleton 1 and Waukesha 1 (Census Bureau 2025 estimates). Two have none (Kenosha and Racine); if you live there, the nearest-store table gives you the closest counter.

South Central carries the largest share of the listings, 28 of 136, and 15.2% of Wisconsin's residents (Census Bureau 2025 estimates). Measured against population, Northwest comes out on top at 3.8 stores per 100,000 residents, against 2.3 statewide, and Southeast: Kenosha, Racine and Walworth trails at 0.6, three stores for the 7.9% of Wisconsinites who live there.

If you live there, the region's listings below give you each store's street.

Horizontal bar chart of the 136 verified e-bike storefronts listed on this page by region (the Department of Workforce Development's eleven areas), with stores per 100,000 residents: South Central 28 (3.1 per 100,000); Bay Area 21 (2.5 per 100,000); West Central 17 (3.4 per 100,000); North Central 15 (3.5 per 100,000); Milwaukee County 14 (1.5 per 100,000); Waukesha, Ozaukee and Washington 13 (2.0 per 100,000); Southwest 7 (2.2 per 100,000); Northwest 7 (3.8 per 100,000); Fox Valley 6 (1.4 per 100,000); Western 5 (1.6 per 100,000); Southeast: Kenosha, Racine and Walworth 3 (0.6 per 100,000).

Bottom line South Central has the most counters, but the county you live in is the one that counts: five of the twenty-nine counties in the table show a dash, and the region listings below give every store by street. If none suits, every e-bike we sell ships free.

Choose the class first, then the counter. In Wisconsin the class decides whether the DNR lets you ride a state trail with the motor on, whether a rider under 16 may take the bike out, and whether it needs a speedometer. The buying guide lays Class 1, 2 and 3 side by side, so you walk in knowing which one your rides call for.

Wisconsin eBike Law — 2026 Quick Reference

Wisconsin asks for no driver's license, registration, title or insurance to ride an e-bike. § 346.806(2) says the rider "is not subject to the provisions under ch. 341, 342, 343, or 344 relating to financial responsibility, operator's licenses, registration, or certificates of title."

We read every statute cited here on the Legislature's site on October 18, 2026, in the chapters it certified on October 1, 2026, and the DNR's trail rule in the Administrative Code as of its June 2026 Register.

Our Wisconsin e-bike law guide carries the city codes it checked, and the Wisconsin bike trails map carries the rule on each trail. The points below are the ones that change which bike you should buy.

  • What counts as an e-bike. In Wisconsin an e-bike is "a bicycle that is equipped with fully operative pedals for propulsion by human power and an electric motor of 750 watts or less" and meets one of three classes (§ 340.01(15ph)). The statute says "or less," so if your motor is rated at 750 watts, it sits inside Wisconsin's line.
  • The three classes. A Class 1 helps "only when the rider is pedaling" and stops helping at 20 mph. A Class 2 "may be powered solely by the motor," also to 20 mph. A Class 3 helps only while you pedal, up to 28 mph (§ 340.01(15ph)(a) to (c)).
  • Age. "No person under the age of 16 years may operate a class 3 electric bicycle," though a younger rider may ride as a passenger on a Class 3 built to carry one (§ 346.806(4)). The section sets no age for Class 1 or Class 2.
  • A bicycle's rights and duties. Your e-bike gets "all the same rights and privileges" as a bicycle, and you carry "the same duties," across chapters 340 to 351 of the statutes (§ 346.806(1)).
  • Helmets. No state section requires you to wear a helmet on a bicycle or an e-bike, at any age. The bicycle run of chapter 346, §§ 346.77 to 346.82, and the bicycle equipment section, § 347.489, never mention one; chapter 347's headgear rule is written for motorcycles (§ 347.485). Two local rules are below.
  • Lights after dark. You need "a lamp emitting a white light visible from a distance of at least 500 feet" to the front, on the bike or worn by you, and on the rear a red reflector or a red lamp, "steady or flashing," seen from 500 feet (§ 347.489(1)).
  • Brakes. On a road, a bike lane or a bike path, your e-bike needs "a brake in good working condition" (§ 347.489(2)).
  • A Class 3 needs a speedometer. "No person may operate a class 3 electric bicycle unless the electric bicycle is equipped with a speedometer" (§ 347.489(3m)(d)).
  • The class label. Since January 1, 2018, the maker or distributor must fix a permanent label to every e-bike giving its class, the speed at which the motor stops helping and the motor's wattage, and anyone who modifies a bike into another class must relabel it (§ 347.489(3m)). Read that label in the shop: it is the class the law will hold your bike to.
  • Roads, bike lanes and bikeways. Your e-bike rides where a bicycle rides. With the motor running, you may ride a bikeway in the hands of the DNR, the state Department of Transportation, a county, or a city, village or town, "subject to any restrictions" its owner sets (§ 346.806(3)). A municipality or county may "by ordinance prohibit the operation, with the power unit in operation, of electric bicycles on bikeways" it runs (§ 349.18(4)(a)), and a municipality is "a city, village or town" (§ 340.01(36m)).
  • Sidewalks. No vehicle may be driven on a sidewalk "unless permitted to do so by the local authorities" (§ 346.94(1)). Where your city allows bicycles there, you "yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian" and "give an audible signal when passing" (§ 346.804).
  • Madison's sidewalks. The city lets e-bikes ride its sidewalks, but not "in areas where buildings exit directly to the sidewalk like downtown and many neighborhood business districts" (City of Madison, Electric Bikes, read October 18, 2026).

Where each class may ride, at a glance; the bullets above and below give each rule in its own words.

Where Class 1 Class 2 Class 3 (riders 16 and older)
Roads and bike lanes Yes Yes Yes
City, village, town and county bikeways Yes, unless an ordinance bans powered riding Yes, unless an ordinance bans powered riding Yes, unless an ordinance bans powered riding
DNR trails the DNR lists for e-bikes Yes, under 15 mph with the motor on Pedaled, motor off Yes, under 15 mph with the motor on
Every other DNR bicycle trail Pedaled, motor off Pedaled, motor off Pedaled, motor off
Sidewalks Where your city allows it Where your city allows it Where your city allows it
  • The DNR's trail rule. On the state trails named in NR 51.73(1) that are open to bicycles, and on other DNR trails posted open to them, "Class 1 and class 3 electric bicycles ... may be operated at speeds of less than 15 miles per hour while the motor is engaged" (NR 45.05(3)(em)). The DNR may close a trail, or a section of one, to e-bikes by posted notice.
  • The DNR's own page. It says those classes "must observe a 15-mile-per-hour speed limit" and that "Electric bicycles used without the motor engaged are allowed on all bicycle trails" (Wisconsin DNR, Bicycle Trails, read October 18, 2026). The rule says "less than 15" and the page "a 15-mile-per-hour speed limit"; ride under 15 mph and you are inside both.
  • A Class 2 on a state trail. The rule names Class 1 and Class 3 only, so on a DNR trail your Class 2 rides as a bicycle, pedaled with the motor off.
  • After dark on a state trail. The DNR's rule asks for a white lamp ahead and a red lamp behind, "steady or flashing," on the bike or on you, where the road rule accepts a red reflector (NR 45.05(3)(fm)).
  • The state trail pass. "A state trail pass is required for all individuals aged 16 or older who bike" on certain trails (Wisconsin DNR, State Trail Passes, read October 18, 2026), so if you are 16 or older you need one there; the statute sets the fees at $25 for the year and $5 for the day (§ 27.01(8)(c)).

Bottom line Buying for Wisconsin's state trails? The DNR lets a Class 1, or a Class 3 ridden by someone 16 or older, run its motor under 15 mph on the trails it lists. A Class 2's throttle belongs on roads, bike lanes and the bikeways your town has not closed to powered riding. Any motor rated at 750 watts or less is inside the state's definition, and a Class 3 must have a speedometer.

  • Ashwaubenon. Before a bicycle or e-bike "customarily kept within the village" goes on a village street, it needs a village registration tag; the Public Safety Department issues it for a fee, and it lasts the life of the bike until it changes hands (Ashwaubenon Code § 7-7-236(A), code book updated August 26, 2026). Any rider "less than 16 years of age" on a bicycle, e-bike or e-scooter on a public way must wear a helmet, and under an amendment dated May 26, 2026, it must meet the federal bicycle-helmet standard, 16 CFR Part 1203 (§ 7-7-240(A)). The village lets e-bikes ride its sidewalks if you yield to pedestrians and signal when passing (§ 7-7-236(B)(2)(b)).
  • Port Washington. "Any person less than 16 years of age operating or riding on a bicycle" on a public street, sidewalk or path in the city "shall wear a protective helmet," and the police department gives one free to a family that cannot buy it (City of Port Washington, Bicycle Helmets, read October 18, 2026). The page names bicycles only, so put a helmet on any rider under 16 there.
  • Registration elsewhere. The state registers no e-bike, and our Wisconsin e-bike law guide sets out the registration chapters of two cities, Fort Atkinson and Two Rivers.

What breaking a rule costs

The rule you break What the law says it costs
A bicycle or e-bike rule in §§ 346.80 to 346.807: a rider under 16 on a Class 3, or no yield and no audible signal when passing a pedestrian on a sidewalk your city allows The rider "may be required to forfeit not more than $20" (§ 346.82(1))
Riding after dark without the white lamp and the red reflector or lamp, riding with no working brake, or riding a Class 3 with no speedometer The rider "may be required to forfeit not more than $20" (§ 347.50(5))
In Ashwaubenon, a village-kept bike on a street with no registration tag, or a rider under 16 without a helmet Warning tickets for a rider under 14's first two offenses; otherwise "a forfeiture of not more than $50," and a parent shares liability for a minor's (Ashwaubenon Code §§ 7-7-241 and 7-7-242)

All three figures are ceilings: each provision says "not more than" before its amount.

Rebates and tax credits

Wisconsin's income tax law gives you no credit for buying a bicycle or an e-bike: chapter 71 of the statutes, certified October 1, 2026, never uses the word.

The bill that would have created one, 2025 Assembly Bill 333 and the matching Senate Bill 344, offered "a refundable tax credit" for "bicycles, including electric bicycles," bought for a dependent, "limited to $200 per dependent" for families at or under twice the federal poverty line (Legislative Reference Bureau analysis). Both bills "Failed to pass pursuant to Senate Joint Resolution 1" on March 23, 2026 (AB 333 history; SB 344 history).

None of the 247 acts of the 2025 session says it relates to bicycles or bikeways (2025 Wisconsin Acts, read October 18, 2026), and the statute sections cited above carry no note of a change waiting to take effect.

EIA Form 861 lists 118 electric distribution utilities serving Wisconsin in its 2025 and 2024 data. We read the websites of 110 of them on October 18, 2026, sixty-one in full and forty-nine in part, where a site refused some of its pages, and none shows an e-bike rebate; neither do the 400 pages we read of Focus on Energy, the statewide efficiency program.

The other eight could not be read (five have no website we could find and three answered no route we tried), so for them this page says nothing either way. A program can start at any time, so ask your power company before you buy.

E-Bike Stores in Wisconsin, Region by Region

Within each region, you will find a store under the town printed in its mailing address, which is the post office's name for the area. The table above counts a store in the county it stands in, so a listing under one town can belong to the county next door, and fifteen of the 136 stand in a town outside every city, village and census-designated place, each placed by its own point with the Census geocoder.

Shopping near the state line? The Illinois, Minnesota and Michigan shop directories list the verified stores across those borders, and the national directory links every state directory published so far.

If your city has none: the nearest verified store

Two of Wisconsin's 12 cities of 50,000 or more have no verified store inside their limits. For each one, the table gives the closest listed store in a straight line from the Census Bureau's point for the city to the store, so your drive will be farther.

City People Nearest verified store Miles
Racine 77,908 Trek Bicycle Store, Mount Pleasant (Racine mailing address) 2.5
Kenosha 99,239 Trek Bicycle Store, Mount Pleasant (Racine mailing address) 7.8

Both cities' nearest listed store is Trek Bicycle Store, which has a Racine mailing address and stands in the village of Mount Pleasant, 2.5 miles from Racine and 7.8 miles from Kenosha, in a straight line (Census Gazetteer). Phone before you set out: a store that lists e-bikes online may not have your frame size on the floor.

Horizontal bar chart of verified e-bike stores inside each of Wisconsin's 12 cities of 50,000 or more: Madison 18; Eau Claire 6; Milwaukee 3; La Crosse 3; Green Bay 2; Oshkosh 2; Janesville 2; West Allis 2; Appleton 1; Waukesha 1; Kenosha 0; Racine 0.

Frequently Asked Questions — Wisconsin eBike Shops

Who sells electric bikes in Wisconsin?

You can buy one at any of the 136 storefronts in the listings above, spread over 87 communities in 42 of Wisconsin's 72 counties. Dane County has the most, 23. Every listing ends with the check that verified it, and a dealer-map grade links to the maker's own locator, so you can see which brands a store is authorized to sell before you phone.

Where are the e-bike shops in Milwaukee?

Inside Milwaukee's city limits you have three verified stores: Ben's Cycle on West Lincoln Avenue, Emerys Cycling Triathlon & Fitness on W Lisbon Ave and Wheel & Sprocket on East Becher Street (Census geocoder). Milwaukee County gives you eleven more outside the city, in Fox Point village (3), West Allis (2), Cudahy, Franklin, Glendale, Greenfield, Shorewood village and Wauwatosa. The Milwaukee County listings give you each store's street, phone and the check that verified it.

Where are the e-bike shops in Madison?

Inside Madison's city limits you have eighteen verified stores, among them Best Buy West Madison, Bikes for Kids Wisconsin and Budget Bicycle Center (Census geocoder). Dane County gives you five more outside the city, in Blue Mounds village, Middleton, Sun Prairie, Verona and Waunakee village. The South Central listings give you each store's street, phone and the check that verified it.

Where are the e-bike stores in Green Bay and the Fox Valley?

Counted by city limits, Green Bay has two, Appleton one and Oshkosh two (Census geocoder). Green Bay and Appleton sit in the Bay Area region and Oshkosh in the Fox Valley; those two regions' listings give you 27 stores between them, each with its street, phone and the check that verified it.

Yes. A Wisconsin e-bike has working pedals and a motor "of 750 watts or less" in one of three classes (§ 340.01(15ph)), and it carries a bicycle's rights and duties (§ 346.806(1)), so it rides roads, bike lanes and the bikeways your town has not closed to powered riding.

No one under 16 may operate a Class 3 (§ 346.806(4)), and a Class 3 needs a speedometer (§ 347.489(3m)(d)). A bike rated at exactly 750 watts is inside the line.

Do e-bikes need to be registered in Wisconsin?

Not by the state. § 346.806(2) exempts an e-bike rider from the chapters on "financial responsibility, operator's licenses, registration, or certificates of title," so you need no state registration, license, title or insurance. A village or city can still ask: Ashwaubenon tags every bicycle and e-bike kept in the village (Code § 7-7-236(A)), and our Wisconsin e-bike law guide covers the registration chapters of Fort Atkinson and Two Rivers.

Are e-bikes allowed on Wisconsin state trails?

Class 1 and Class 3 e-bikes may ride the trails the DNR lists "at speeds of less than 15 miles per hour while the motor is engaged" (NR 45.05(3)(em)); the DNR's own page calls it "a 15-mile-per-hour speed limit" (Wisconsin DNR). A Class 2 rides there pedaled with the motor off, as every class does on the DNR's other bicycle trails.

Riders 16 and older need a state trail pass on certain trails, $25 a year or $5 a day (§ 27.01(8)(c)).

Are bicycle helmets required in Wisconsin?

Not by state law, for a bicycle or an e-bike, at any age: chapter 346's bicycle sections and the equipment rule in § 347.489 set none. Two places set their own. Ashwaubenon requires a helmet meeting 16 CFR Part 1203 on any rider "less than 16 years of age" on a bicycle, e-bike or e-scooter (Code § 7-7-240(A)), and Port Washington requires one on bicycle riders under 16 (City of Port Washington).

The Bottom Line

Wisconsin's 136 verified counters are spread over 42 of its 72 counties, and ten of its 12 largest cities have one inside their limits. South Central lists 28 of them and Southeast: Kenosha, Racine and Walworth 3. A county with none still has neighbors, so read the listings for the counties around yours before you give up on a test ride.

Bottom line Decide which class your rides need, then find the nearest counter that carries it. The state asks for no title, registration or license for an e-bike, and every e-bike we sell ships free to a Wisconsin address (shipping policy).

Buy at a counter if you want to ride the bike around the lot first, have a mechanic tune the brakes and set the saddle height, and know whose door to knock on when a cable stretches or a spoke loosens.

Buy online if no counter near you stocks the model you want. Check the class and the motor rating on the maker's specification sheet before you order: Wisconsin's definition asks for "an electric motor of 750 watts or less" (§ 340.01(15ph)), so a bike rated at exactly 750 watts is inside the line and one rated above it is not.

Why order from us when no counter near you stocks the bike. Every e-bike we sell ships free within the contiguous United States, every Wisconsin address included. Orders are prepared and dispatched within 1 to 3 business days of confirmation, and most e-bikes arrive within 5 to 10 business days after dispatch (shipping policy). At checkout on October 19, 2026 you could pay by card or with Google Pay.

The warranty is the maker's, and when your bike will not power on, will not charge or shows an error code, we coordinate the repair or the replacement remotely (refund policy).

If the box arrives damaged, report it within 48 hours of delivery, with photos: we file the carrier claim and arrange a replacement or a repair at no cost to you (refund policy). The seller on every order is the company our terms of service name, and support@redtailebikes.com answers order, shipping and warranty questions.

Riding through a Wisconsin winter? The winter guide measured Milwaukee's: in a normal winter an inch or more of snow lies on the ground on 48.2 of the 90 days from December to February. It sorts 14 bikes by the winter you ride, from a plowed-road commute to snow and ice on streets and paths, and says which of them Wisconsin's definition admits.

Still deciding between classes? Send sales@redtailebikes.com your town and the roads or trails you plan to ride. The team typically answers email within one business day (contact page), and the advice is free.

Before you pay anywhere, find the label Wisconsin has required on every e-bike since January 1, 2018 (§ 347.489(3m)), and check that its class and wattage match what the receipt says you bought.

If you know a Wisconsin shop that sells e-bikes and is missing here, or you find an error, write to sales@redtailebikes.com; verified corrections are published. Last verified October 19, 2026.

Sources, limitations and how this page was verified

How the count was reached

Every storefront appears once: 136 verified storefronts, all of them listed on this page.

Where the candidates came from. OpenStreetMap returned 125 entries tagged as bicycle shops in Wisconsin; after unnamed entries were dropped and repeats merged, 118 remained, 65 of them with a website. Eight makers' dealer locators supplied 160 storefront rows: the dealer maps of Bosch, Aventon, Giant, Trek, Specialized, Velotric, Pedego and SWFT's Best Buy pages. Three more makers' locators were read whole for Wisconsin: QuietKat's lists twenty-five Wisconsin locations, Lectric's eight and Magnum's two.

The Wisconsin Bike Federation publishes its statewide list of bike shops as a PDF whose file is dated August 2026. Its 160 rows were read as leads like every other source's, and 107 of the stores listed here appear on it.

What the Google Maps search covered Places searched
Counties all 72
Incorporated cities and villages of 2,000 or more 263
Towns of 5,000 or more 17
Census-designated places of 2,000 or more 12
ZIP areas of Milwaukee and Madison 40
"Electric bike shop" searches, one in each place above 404

A Google Maps search asked for bike shops, and then for electric bike shops, in each of those places: 808 searches, which with their follow-up reads turned up 102 candidates to check.

The answers the AI engines gave to the 16 questions were read for the businesses they named, and the twelve that no other source carried, or carried only under a near name, were looked up on Google Maps: six are marked permanently closed there, one is listed by Google Maps under indoor cycling and five have no listing of their own (the search returned other businesses), so none of them is added here.

Reddit was read too: 44 of 45 searches of fifteen Wisconsin subreddits were answered (r/janesville answered none), for the questions riders ask and the shops they name, and the 616 replies under the 35 posts those searches found were read for shop names too.

What counted. A candidate's own website had to offer e-bikes for sale in its own words: a price, a shop category that lists an e-bike, or a sentence that says it sells them. An e-bike named only on a repair menu, a rental rate card, a raffle, a trail notice or a parts page does not qualify, and neither does a vehicle or powersports dealer's e-bike page.

A site that would not load was tried again in a real browser, through a text reader and in an archived copy. Every candidate whose first read named no e-bike for sale was crawled page by page, so a shop whose e-bikes sit deep in its own catalog is counted too.

Each of the seventy leads that had no site of its own, or none that would load, was then searched by name and looked up again on Google Maps:

  • Two sell e-bikes and are listed above: REI Appleton in Appleton and The Powered Pedaler in Janesville.
  • Seven have closed, marked permanently closed on Google Maps.
  • Two had moved, and the store at the new address is read as its own listing.
  • One turned up pages of its own (a site read through a text reader), and they offer no e-bike for sale.
  • Nine are not bicycle stores (four businesses in other trades, two makers' offices and workshops, one trail landmark, one motorcycle or powersports business and one warehouse).
  • Three only rent e-bikes.
  • Three were second listings of a place already read.
  • The other forty-two are still open leads.

A maker's dealer map is the second way in: a store counts when the Bosch, Aventon, SWFT, Velotric and Giant map lists its address as an e-bike dealer.

Each store's own Google Maps listing was then read: all 136 resolved to one business at the listed address that Google shows as open, and a store Google shows closed, even temporarily, is left out.

How to read the listings

The grade at the end of each listing tells you what confirmed that the store sells e-bikes.

Site checked covers 93 of the 136: the shop's own website offers e-bikes for sale.

Chain site checked covers 14: one website serves several storefronts (for example Broken Spoke Bike Studio, Emerys Cycling Triathlon & Fitness and Nor Door Sport & Cycle), so it proves the business sells e-bikes, and the listing tells you which branch you are visiting.

A maker's dealer map covers 29: a maker lists the store as an authorized e-bike dealer, and the grade links to that maker's locator. Of those 29, 21 have a website that did not show e-bikes for sale in its own words (or could not be read) and 8 have no website of their own, so the maker's map is the evidence.

Bar chart of how the 136 listings were verified: site checked 93, a maker's dealer map 29, chain site checked 14.

A phone number appears where the sources agree or only one gives one; where a maker's roster and Google Maps disagree, the shop's own site decides, and a listing carries no number when the site settles nothing. Call ahead before you drive, whatever the grade.

Why the map is thin where it is thin

OpenStreetMap carries 65 of the 136 storefronts listed here, so a directory built from that map alone would miss 71 of them. The makers' dealer maps, the Bike Federation's list and the statewide Google Maps search each found stores the other sources did not.

Closures were settled on Google Maps and on the shops' own sites: 17 storefronts that a maker's roster or another source still listed are closed (16 permanently, 1 temporarily).

Limitations

  1. 116 candidates remain open leads, named in the research files and not counted: 74 with sites that name no e-bike for sale, 20 that could not be confirmed and 22 with no website of their own. Each deserves a phone call before you rule it out; none is a finding that the business does not sell e-bikes.
  2. Why 20 could not be confirmed: eleven whose sites would not load, two whose websites' domains no longer resolve, five whose only listed sites are social networks' front pages, one whose own site now shows only a page saying it is shut down and one whose store page names no e-bike while the chain's online shop, which listed e-bikes when last archived, would not load.
  3. Named and not counted: 22 listings that are not a bicycle store (six businesses in other trades, five motorcycle and powersports businesses, three makers' offices and workshops, three vehicle dealers, two clubs and repair co-ops, one bike-share station, one trail landmark and one warehouse), 16 closed storefronts, 8 businesses that only rent e-bikes, 2 shops that decline e-bike work, 8 duplicate listings and 3 old addresses of shops that have moved, each read at its new one.
  4. County and city lines are the Census Bureau's. A store counts toward a county or a city of 50,000 or more only if its own point stands inside that boundary, so a store with a Milwaukee or Madison mailing address can stand in a neighboring city, village or town. A store in one of Wisconsin's towns, which lie outside every city and village, counts toward its county alone. Populations are the Census Bureau's 2025 estimates (Vintage 2025).
  5. Local rules were read for three municipalities. The state's sections leave sidewalks and the bikeways they run to cities, villages, towns and counties, and Wisconsin has 608 incorporated cities and villages; this page cites the published rules of Madison, Ashwaubenon and Port Washington, and no others.
  6. This is a floor, not a census. A shop on no maker's dealer map, not on the Bike Federation's list, not in OpenStreetMap and not in Google Maps would not be found here. A Maps search by name can also return a same-named shop across a state line, so every address was checked for Wisconsin before a store was counted.
  7. Demand evidence. The questions this page answers come from 3,011 Google and Bing completions and related searches and 35 Wisconsin forum posts read on October 18 and 19, 2026, and from AI search engines' answers to 16 questions on October 18 and 19, 2026: Gemini and a web-search tool run in place of the engines that refused answered all 16.
  8. What could not be measured. Brave Search, ChatGPT, Copilot Search, Google AI Mode and Perplexity returned no usable answer: each served a bot check or no answer to a headless browser, and was not retried in a visible window. No search-volume figure is used: the paid keyword tool's account had no API units on October 19, 2026, so every volume is unmeasured, never zero.
  9. What would age this page. It is due for re-checking in April 2027, and sooner if a listed shop closes or moves, if the Legislature amends the sections cited above, if the DNR changes NR 45, if a city, village, town or county restricts e-bikes by ordinance, or when the Census Bureau publishes new local estimates.
  10. Distances are straight lines. The nearest-store table measures from each city's Census point to each store's coordinates; the road distance is longer.
