Focus: The city's one open door for buying and fixing an electric bike, a mile inland from the beach on Polk Street. Sales sit beside a repair bench, which in a one-floor city is the half that matters most.
A bench inside the city line changes the ownership math on this coastline. Salt air eats connectors, chains and brake hardware faster a block from the Atlantic than it does inland, and a bike that needs the bench three times a year is a different bike to own when the nearest one is a fifteen-minute drive. Call ahead with the motor system and the model, because a one-floor city rarely stocks parts for everything it services.
Treat Hollywood as a one-floor city with a phone call attached. Polk Street is the open door. A second Stirling Road store put a shutdown notice on its own website while its listing still showed it trading, so the sources section prints that conflict rather than resolving it. The deeper benches are north in Fort Lauderdale, which fields three floors.
Broward County Transit — eBikes on Buses and Community Shuttles
The bus is a real part of the answer in a city with one bike shop, and Broward County Transit publishes its rider rules itself. On its rider pages, read on September 4, 2026, BCT states that its "entire bus fleet is equipped with bike racks and is wheelchair and scooter accessible."
The instructions are about the operator's attention rather than the machine. BCT's How to Ride page tells riders to "Indicate to the bus operator that you are loading a bike prior to doing so" when boarding, and to "Tell the bus operator if you are removing your bike prior to removing it" when getting off.
A third line applies before the bus arrives: "Remove personal items from your bike before placing it on the bike rack" (BCT). Panniers, a bag bungeed to a rear rack and a handlebar phone mount all come off first, and on a heavy electric bike that is easier standing at the stop than balancing at the curb.
Hollywood also runs its own community shuttle inside the BCT network. The county's community shuttle page lists the city's Blue Line, Green Line, Orange Line and a Red Line that changes with the season, at (954) 967-4357, and states that "All community shuttles connect to BCT fixed routes and are wheelchair accessible and equipped with bike racks."
What BCT does not publish on those pages is a weight figure or any rule written specifically for electric bikes. The practical question is therefore fit and lift rather than paperwork: a 70-pound fat-tire machine has to go up onto the rack by hand, in traffic, in Florida heat.
Every BCT bus and every community shuttle carries a rack, and the agency publishes no e-bike weight limit. Strip the bags, catch the operator's eye before you load, and tell them again before you unload. If the bike is heavy enough that lifting it chest-high worries you at the shop, it will worry you more at a bus stop on US 1.
Trail Access — The Broadwalk and Hollywood Beach
The Broadwalk is the reason many people in this city want an electric bike, and it is the one place the city says a motor may not go. Hollywood's beach chapter permits cycling along its two and a half miles at all hours, then defines what may do the cycling.
Section 99.02(B)(6) of the city code, read on August 25, 2026, allows a "human powered device" no wider than 48 inches, ridden "within the designated bicycle path(s)" and yielding to people on foot. The width rule catches a trailer or a wide cargo deck; the power rule catches everything with a battery.
Section 99.03(J) closes it. It is unlawful to "drive or operate any device which is not operated exclusively by human power upon the broadwalk or beach, except if expressly permitted by law." An electric bike has a motor, so it fails that test whether or not the motor is switched on.
City employees on duty are the carve-out. Mobility devices used for a disability are governed by federal law rather than by this section.
What a violation costs
Section 99.99 prices it as a civil infraction: $50 for a first violation, $100 for a second and $200 for each additional one, with a judgment of up to $500 for ignoring the citation. Each violation inside a one-year window counts separately, so a habit gets expensive quickly.
Enforcement is not theoretical, and it is not the police department's job alone. Section 99.06 puts it with the Beach Safety Division, the police department and park rangers, three sets of eyes on the same two and a half miles.
CBS Miami reported this year on resident pressure over close calls on the Broadwalk and cited a fire department count of 136 bike-related accidents there in a recent year. That figure is reporting rather than a record pulled from the department, and it is labeled that way here, but it explains why the rule has attention behind it.
The ban is a routing rule, not a reason to buy a different bike. Ride the roadway and the bike lanes on A1A and Surf Road under Florida's ordinary bicycle rules, walk the machine where the pavement turns to Broadwalk pavers, and save the assist for the flat run west of the Intracoastal. Nothing in Chapter 99 touches an electric bike anywhere else in the city.
Florida eBike Laws — What Makes an eBike Legal in Hollywood
State law defines the machine and takes the paperwork away. The city decides where it may go, and here that decision covers exactly one strip of sand and pavement.
The state definition
Under Fla. Stat. § 316.003(23), an electric bicycle has operable pedals, a saddle and an electric motor of less than 750 watts, in one of three classes that stop assisting at 20 or 28 miles per hour. Both official hosts of the statute were read on August 25, 2026.
Under § 316.20655(2), an e-bike and its rider are exempt from registration, title and insurance requirements, and subsection (4) grants the rider "all of the rights and duties applicable to the rider of a bicycle." That is the whole state-level answer for a bike you own.
What is not an e-bike here
A machine over 750 watts, or one without working pedals, sits outside § 316.003(23) entirely, and the paperwork exemption does not follow it home. Electric dirt bikes in the Sur-Ron and Talaria mold usually fall on that side of the line.
The distinction bites twice in a beach city. Such a machine is a motor vehicle on the road, and it is just as banned from the Broadwalk as a legal e-bike is, because § 99.03(J) asks only whether a person is the exclusive power source. With the Broadwalk out of play, the honest map is the street grid, and it is a good one. North and South Ocean Drive give a wide shoulder within sight of the water. Hollywood Boulevard and Sheridan Street run west toward the rail stations and the Intracoastal bridges. The quiet Lakes section between downtown and the beach is where most first rides should happen.
Flat end to end. Range and comfort beat torque on every one of those routes, and a bike that is pleasant at 12 to 15 miles per hour in traffic will get ridden far more than one built to sprint.
Salt is the second constant, and it is a maintenance budget rather than a warning. The closer the bike parks to the ocean, the faster connectors corrode. Rinse the frame with fresh water after a beachfront ride, dry the contacts and bring the battery indoors. A hose and a hallway are the cheapest service plan on this coastline.

- Who does the warranty work, and where is the bench? In a one-floor city a named local bench is worth real money against a lower sticker price.
