How we verified this directory — Milad Ghobadibeygvand, BScN

We read seven e-bike makers' dealer maps, Superpages, 128 Google Maps listings, 16 answer-engine questions, the r/chicago forum and each shop's own website. The Census geocoder placed every address inside or outside the city line.

A shop is listed when its own website sells e-bikes or a maker names it as an e-bike dealer. Left out: closed storefronts, rentals and tours, repair-only shops, shops that name no e-bike and suburban stores. Last verified October 16, 2026; due again April 2027.

Quick Answer

Among the bike shops in Chicago, 28 stores inside the city limits sell e-bikes as of October 16, 2026, from Robert's Cycle in Rogers Park to Chicagoland Bicycle in Mount Greenwood. Twenty-four sit north of City Hall, and the Near North Side holds five, with J.C. Lind and Village Cycle Center on one block of Wells Street.

Illinois allows Class 1, 2 and 3 e-bikes with motors of less than 750 watts. Chicago keeps Class 3 out of bike lanes and off sidewalks, and every bicycle off Lake Shore Drive. The buying guide helps you pick a class, and the Illinois law page covers the state rules.

Chicago is a Cook County city of 2,721,308 people in the Census Bureau's 2024 estimate. The cover tower is 875 North Michigan Avenue (the John Hancock Center), a 1,128-foot "tapered rectangular tube" braced by trusses on all four sides.

CTA, Metra and Pace — eBikes on Chicago Transit

If your e-bike folds, you can take it on all three systems, the 'L' even at rush hour; if it doesn't, you can ride the 'L' outside weekday rush hours, any Metra train, and a Pace rack at 55 pounds or less.

On the CTA, you can take a bicycle on 'L' trains "most hours on weekdays (except during rush periods, from 7-9am and 4-6pm)" and all day on weekends and holidays. "Folding scooters and bikes, including e-bikes, are always allowed on the 'L' and buses, if folded." Divvy bikes and gas-powered bikes may not board.

Metra says "Bikes and scooters are permitted on all trains" and "E-bikes and e-scooters are allowed," free, up to 80 inches long and 30 inches wide. You must carry the bike on and off yourself.

Pace takes your e-bike inside only if it folds to "about the size of a suitcase" and is powered off. Its front racks take one that "weighs no more than 55 pounds," on tires up to 2.3 inches wide.

Full-size e-bike? Take Metra, or the 'L' outside rush hours.

Want the 'L' at rush hour? Only a folded bike boards then; the folding guide picks eight by the space you have.

Bike Paths — the Lakefront Trail, The 606 and the Forest Preserves

The Chicago Park District runs the Lakefront Trail, split in 2018 into "an 18-mile Bike Trail and 18.5-mile Pedestrian Trail."

The District's code chapter on the use of parks lets you ride "only on paths, trails, roadways or other areas designated for bicycle use" and names no e-bike rule (Chapter VII, item B.8(c), Bicycling). Illinois lets you ride a low-speed e-bike on a bicycle path unless the local authority prohibits it (625 ILCS 5/11-1517(f)).

That is under review: the District held town halls on September 29 and 30 and October 6, 2026, to gather ideas for "new rules for micromobility vehicles on Chicago Park District bicycle paths and trails" (its page). It also posted a trail repair alert on September 15, 2026, with work starting at the south end.

The 606 runs 2.7 miles between Ashland and Ridgeway, open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Its rule reads "All users are welcome, though no motorized or commercial vehicles are allowed." Read one way, a pedal-assist bicycle is welcome; read the other, any motor is out. Ask the Park District before you ride a motor there.

In the Forest Preserves of Cook County you may ride a Class 1 or 2 e-bike "on trails where bicycles are allowed," except the single-track trails at Palos and Paul Douglas, across "more than 200 miles of paved trails." Class 3 e-bikes are "NOT allowed anywhere."

Riding a Class 3? The Forest Preserves bar it everywhere, and Chicago bars it from bike lanes and sidewalks, so plan your routes on streets.

Riding to the Loop daily? The commuter guide has 18 city picks sorted by budget, hills, range and winter riding.

Illinois eBike Laws — What Makes an eBike Legal in Chicago

Your e-bike is street legal in Chicago when it is Class 1, 2 or 3 with a motor of less than 750 watts. The City adds two rules the state does not have: no Class 3 in a bike lane, and a Class 1 or 2 of 125 pounds or more counts as a Class 3.

The state definition

Illinois defines a low-speed electric bicycle by its "fully operable pedals and an electric motor of less than 750 watts" (625 ILCS 5/1-140.10). Class 1 assists only while you pedal, to 20 mph; Class 2's motor "may be used exclusively to propel the bicycle," to 20 mph; Class 3 assists while you pedal, to 28 mph.

Each carries a label naming its class, top assisted speed and motor wattage (11-1517). The Vehicle Code leaves low-speed e-bikes out of its definition of a motor vehicle (1-146).

Chicago's own rules

The City applies its bicycle rules to low-speed e-bikes (9-52-120(a)), then adds these:

Rule What the code says Section
Bike lanes "The rider of a Class 3 electric bicycle shall not ride in a bike lane" 9-40-060(c)
Weight A Class 1 or 2 "that weighs 125 pounds or more" counts as a Class 3 9-4-010
Sidewalks No Class 3 "upon any sidewalk"; state law bars every low-speed e-bike 9-52-020(d), 11-1517(g)
North Sheridan Road No riding its sidewalk from West Ardmore Avenue to West Sheridan Road; $200 fine at 18 and older 9-52-021
Lake Shore Drive "Bicycles shall not be operated on Lake Shore Drive" 9-52-020(c)
Age 16 or older for a Class 3 9-52-120(d)
Speed No number: "reasonable and prudent under the conditions then existing" 9-52-030
Lights At night, a white headlamp seen from 500 feet and a red rear reflector or lamp from 200 feet 9-52-080

The trap is the weight line: if your cargo bike weighs 125 pounds or more, it leaves the bike lane even with a Class 1 label.

Breaking the City's bicycle chapter is fined "not less than $50.00 nor more than $200.00 for each offense" unless a section sets its own penalty (9-52-010(d)), and riding while using a phone draws $20 to $50 for a first offense and up to $500 at a crash (9-52-110).

What changes on January 1, 2027

The Governor approved Senate Bill 3484 on August 26, 2026, as Public Act 104-0854, effective January 1, 2027 (bill status).

From that date the statute will allow Class 1 and 2 riders "only if the person is 15 years of age or older," treat "Any electric bicycle that is not a low-speed electric bicycle" as a motor driven cycle, let park, forest preserve, conservation and transit districts regulate their paths, and say "no unit of local government, including a home rule unit, may regulate low-speed electric bicycles" except as the section authorizes.

Our reading, labelled as ours. State law allows low-speed e-bikes in bicycle lanes (11-1517(e)) and, until 2027, has no clause limiting what a city may add. From January 1, 2027 it bars local regulation except as the section authorizes.

Whether Chicago's Class 3 bike-lane ban and 125-pound line survive that date is for the City Council and the courts; the City's code prints both as of October 16, 2026. Until the City says otherwise, keep your Class 3, or any e-bike of 125 pounds or more, in the traffic lane.

If your bike is a Class 1 or 2 under 125 pounds, the bike lanes are yours. A Class 3, or anything heavier, stays in the traffic lane, off sidewalks and off Lake Shore Drive, with a rider of 16 or older.

Choosing between Class 1, 2 and 3? The buying guide explains classes, motors, range, price tiers and battery safety.

Where to Ride Your eBike in Chicago

Ride the streets and bike lanes on your Class 1 or 2 under 125 pounds, keep a Class 3 in the traffic lane, stay off sidewalks and Lake Shore Drive, and use the Lakefront Trail's bike side.

Six panels of Chicago's e-bike rules: under 750 watts, no sidewalk riding, no Class 3 in bike lanes, the 125-pound line, age 16 for Class 3, and no Lake Shore Drive

Your Chicago riding checklist

  • Read your bike's label: Class 1, 2 or 3, motor under 750 watts.
  • Weigh your cargo bike: 125 pounds or more makes it a Class 3 in the City code.
  • Keep a Class 3 out of bike lanes and off sidewalks, ridden by someone 16 or older.
  • Ride the Lakefront Trail's bike side, never the Lake Shore Drive roadway.
  • After dark, run a white headlamp and a red rear light or reflector.
  • Skip the 'L' from 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. on weekdays unless the bike folds.

Divvy e-bikes

Divvy, the city's bike share, charges "$1 unlock + $0.44/min" for a single e-bike ride. As an annual member you pay $0.20 a minute, "Capped at $6.00 for minutes 31 to 45," on a $143.90 plan ($99 as a limited-time offer for new members).

Divvy for Everyone costs $5 a year if you qualify, with e-bikes at $0.05 a minute.

Rebates

You cannot claim an Illinois e-bike rebate on October 16, 2026: Senate Bill 1521 was re-referred to the Senate's Assignments committee on May 22, 2026. The City's Bike Chicago program gives bicycles to residents who meet age and income rules, and its FAQ says "The application window is currently closed due to overwhelming demand."

Why buy from Redtail

When the bike you want is on none of these floors, Redtail ships free to any address in the contiguous United States (shipping policy). Orders are "dispatched within 1–3 business days," and most e-bikes "arrive within 5–10 business days after dispatch."

Report transit damage within 48 hours of delivery and Redtail files the carrier claim for you. If your bike will not power on or charge, it is "covered under manufacturer warranty," with warranty repairs coordinated by Redtail (refund policy).

Your email gets a reply within one business day through the contact page, and every voicemail is returned. You can pay with Shop Pay, Apple Pay or Google Pay at checkout, and the company behind the store is named in the terms of service.

Riding through a Chicago January? The winter guide computes range at 32°F and 14°F and picks 14 bikes for ice and snow; every pick ships free to your door.

Frequently Asked Questions — Chicago, IL eBikes

Where can you buy an e-bike in Chicago?

Twenty-eight stores inside the city sell e-bikes as of October 16, 2026. The closest to City Hall is Kozy's Cyclery on West Erie Street, 0.7 miles away, and Offbeat Bikes specializes in electric cargo bikes.

Yes. Illinois allows Class 1, 2 and 3 e-bikes with motors of less than 750 watts on streets open to bicycles. Chicago bars Class 3 from bike lanes and sidewalks, counts a Class 1 or 2 of 125 pounds or more as a Class 3, and keeps bicycles off Lake Shore Drive. A new state law takes effect January 1, 2027.

Can you ride an e-bike on the sidewalk in Chicago?

No. Illinois law says "A person may not operate a low-speed electric bicycle on a sidewalk," and Chicago bars a Class 3 from every sidewalk. Walk your bike there and ride in the street or bike lane.

Are e-bikes allowed on the Lakefront Trail?

The Park District's park-use rules name no e-bike rule as of October 16, 2026, and state law lets low-speed e-bikes use bicycle paths unless the local authority prohibits them. The District held town halls in fall 2026 on new micromobility rules for its paths, so check its page before a long ride.

How old do you have to be to ride an e-bike in Chicago?

Sixteen for a Class 3, under state law and the City code. The state's e-bike section sets no age for Class 1 and 2 today; from January 1, 2027, Public Act 104-0854 sets 15. Chicago's code bars a parent from knowingly letting a child break its bicycle rules.

Is there a speed limit for e-bikes in Chicago?

The motor's help stops at 20 mph on Class 1 and 2 and 28 mph on Class 3. Chicago's bicycle chapter sets no number; it bars riding faster than "is reasonable and prudent under the conditions then existing."

Does Illinois have an e-bike rebate?

Not as of October 16, 2026. Senate Bill 1521, a rebate bill, was re-referred to committee on May 22, 2026. Bike Chicago gives bicycles to residents who meet age and income rules, and its application window is closed.

Can you take an e-bike on the CTA?

Yes, on 'L' trains outside weekday rush hours (7–9 a.m. and 4–6 p.m.), and at any hour if it folds: "Folding scooters and bikes, including e-bikes, are always allowed on the 'L' and buses, if folded" (CTA). Metra takes e-bikes on every train, free.

The denominator

Chicago had 2,721,308 residents in the Census Bureau's 2024 vintage estimate (Illinois file, row "Chicago city"), against a 2020 base of 2,748,331.

In all, 171 businesses were tied to Chicago by at least one source, and each has a verdict, shown below.

Bar chart of the 171 businesses tied to Chicago by verdict: 28 sell e-bikes in the city, 28 name no e-bike, 27 are outside the city line, and 88 fall into ten smaller groups

The sources, and what each one could and could not do

Seven makers' dealer maps were read on October 16, 2026, each complete to 20 miles: Aventon, Bosch, Giant, Pedego, Specialized, Trek and Velotric. SWFT's store pages name the two Best Buy stores. 128 Google Maps listings gave status, hours and phones, and Superpages named 125 businesses. Yelp and OpenStreetMap could not be read.

Answer engines. Sixteen questions went to Google's Gemini and to Claude's web search; five other engines gave no answer to an automated browser. Gemini described a City of Chicago e-bike voucher "up to $1,200"; a search of chicago.gov on October 16, 2026 found no such program.

Every address here returned "Chicago city" from the Census geocoder, except REI's, which found no match; its point is the pin on REI's store page. Community areas come from the City's boundary dataset. Miles run straight from City Hall's Census match at 121 North LaSalle Street.

Limitations

  1. Seven stores are listed from a maker's map: Comrade Cycles, Cosmic Bikes, Vern & Sonny's and REI from Bosch's, Specialized Lincoln Park from Specialized's, and two Best Buy stores from SWFT's pages.
  2. Eighteen leads could not be read online, among them Copenhagen Cyclery, Dutch Bike Co. and Chicago Cargo.
  3. Hours conflict for BFF Bikes, Johnny Sprockets and Golas and Sons.
  4. The 2027 fate of Chicago's Class 3 and 125-pound rules is our reading of a new statute.
  5. Re-verification is due April 2027.

What would age this page, and when to re-check

  • January 1, 2027, or any City Council change to 9-40-060 or 9-4-010.
  • Park District rules for e-bikes on its paths.
  • A store opening or closing, or Divvy changing its prices.
