Seven e-bike makers' dealer maps, four store locators, Superpages, OpenStreetMap, 298 Google Maps searches, 16 answer-engine questions and seven Reddit threads named 270 businesses, and each one's own website was read where it opened. The Census geocoder and the City's Cities and Towns layer placed every address.
A store is listed when its own website sells e-bikes or a maker's dealer map names it. Closed stores, rentals, mobile services and stores whose pages name no e-bike are left out, and stores past the city line are listed apart. Verified October 24, 2026; next check April 2027.
Quick Answer
Nine e-bike shops in Indianapolis sell from storefronts inside the city, verified October 24, 2026: two in the Near Eastside and one each in seven other neighborhoods, from Castleton in the north to Homecroft in the south. Bike People is nearest Meridian and Washington, 1.1 miles away. Four more stand just past the city line in Lawrence, Carmel and Zionsville.
Indiana regulates an e-bike as a bicycle when its motor's output is not greater than 750 watts. The Indianapolis buying guide matches a bike to your street, and the Indiana law page covers the state code.
Indianapolis is a city of 910,638 people in the Census Bureau's 2025 estimate: the consolidated city, which is Marion County less Beech Grove, Lawrence, Southport and Speedway. Four of its nine e-bike stores stand within 4 miles of Meridian and Washington, and three belong to Bicycle Garage Indy.

IndyGo — eBikes on Indianapolis Buses
Call IndyGo's Customer Care Center at 317‑635‑3344 before you take an e-bike on a bus. Its Riders' Guide, revised January 2026, writes its bike rules for bicycles, and neither the guide nor the code of conduct names an e-bike.
| On IndyGo | What the Riders' Guide or code of conduct says |
|---|---|
| A local bus | A front rack that "holds three bicycles"; you load and unload your own |
| A rapid transit bus | "space for up to four bicycles inside the bus", boarding by the back door |
| When the rack is full | "the operator will instruct you to wait for the next bus" |
| A bike that will not fit | One "too small or too large to be properly secured in the bike rack" cannot ride |
| The downtown transit center | "Riding a bicycle in or through CTC property is not allowed" |
Bringing an e-bike on the bus? Check that it fits the rack before you wait at the stop: a bike the rack cannot secure does not ride.
Riding the whole commute instead? The commuter guide narrows US city riding to 18 picks, so you can plan the trip on the bike alone.

Indiana's rule for paths. Your Class 1 or Class 2 e-bike may ride "any bicycle path or multipurpose path where bicycles are permitted", and the statute opens that sentence with "Unless otherwise specified by a statute, rule, or local ordinance". A Class 3 is barred from those paths unless the path is "within or adjacent to a highway or roadway" or the authority over it allows one (IC 9-21-11-13.1(k)).
Indy Parks' land. The City's park code makes it unlawful to run "any motor-powered vehicle" on City or County land "other than public roads and streets", except where Indy Parks or the land's board "expressly" permits it (Sec. 631-122). It names motorcycles, motor scooters, snowmobiles and ATVs, never an e-bike, and Indy Parks' park rules name none either; they say "Park hours are dawn to dusk" and "Bicycles are not allowed on gravel paths."
Who enforces it. Park police and IMPD officers, among others, enforce the park chapter (Sec. 631-121). You can report a trail safety concern to 317‑327‑3811, the number on the City's Find a Trail page, which asks bicyclists to "yield to all other trail users."
The Cultural Trail and the canal. The Cultural Trail's Downtown Canal page posts "No motorized vehicles* allowed" with the note "*Power wheelchairs and ebikes are allowed." Walk your bike across Lugar Plaza, whose rules say "No bicycles, scooters, skates, or skateboarding."
Commuting on a trail? Choose a Class 1 or 2; a Class 3 needs a stretch beside a road or the path owner's permission, and a trailhead sign overrides both.
Indiana eBike Laws — What Makes an eBike Legal in Indianapolis
Indiana treats your e-bike as a bicycle when it has "fully operable pedals" and "an assistive, electric motor with a power output not greater than seven hundred fifty (750) watts" (IC 9-13-2-49.2). It "is not a motor vehicle" and "shall be regulated as a bicycle", so you need no license, title, registration or proof of financial responsibility (IC 9-21-11-13.1(a)–(e)).
Three classes, set by when the motor stops helping (IC 9-13-2-26.6, 26.7 and 26.8):
| Rule | Class 1 | Class 2 | Class 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Motor | Not greater than 750 W | Not greater than 750 W | Not greater than 750 W |
| Motor helps up to | 20 mph, only while you pedal | 20 mph, and may propel the bike alone | 28 mph, only while you pedal |
| Minimum age (state) | None in the statute | None in the statute | 15 to operate |
| Helmet (state) | None in the statute | None in the statute | Every operator and passenger under 18 |
Check the label before you buy. Since January 1, 2020, makers and distributors must fix "a permanent and conspicuous label" to every e-bike giving its class, top assisted speed and motor wattage (IC 9-21-11-13.1(f)).
What a violation costs. If you break a rule in Indiana's bicycle chapter, you commit a Class C infraction (IC 9-21-11-14), with a judgment of up to $500 (IC 34-28-5-4(c)). The chapter's e-bike section was added in 2019 by P.L.206-2019 and last amended in 2020 by P.L.156-2020.
What the City's own code says
Indianapolis's code predates the state law and never names a privately owned e-bike. Its 2001 bicycle article defines a bicycle as built "to be propelled solely by human muscular power", and a greenway as open space "intended for the use of pedestrians and non-motorized devices" (Sec. 431-601).
The traffic chapter counts as a motor vehicle "any device using any form of energy or power other than muscular power", except an electric foot scooter (Sec. 441-101).
Two City rules turn on those words, as does the park code's bar on "any motor-powered vehicle" (Trail Access):
- Bike lanes. "no person shall operate any other conveyance in a designated bicycle path or lane" (2009), apart from a moped "being operated exclusively with human muscular power" (Sec. 441-371(b)); a first violation in twelve months is a $50 civil penalty (Sec. 441-374, Sec. 103-52).
- Sidewalks and greenways. A bicycle there must be ridden seated, at no speed that "constitutes a threat" to anyone, with a bell, lamps and brakes, the bell sounded "not less than fifty (50) feet" from anyone approaching (Sec. 431-603); a first violation in twelve months is also a $50 civil penalty.
The code names an e-bike only for rentals. Chapter 905, adopted in 2018, lets shared devices, e-bikes assisted to 20 mph among them, ride bike lanes "Notwithstanding section 441-371" (Sec. 905-101, Sec. 905-104(b)).
Two readings, and the advice that holds under both
One reading says Indiana's 2019 law settles it: an e-bike "shall be regulated as a bicycle" and "may be operated wherever bicycles are permitted to travel" (IC 9-21-11-13.1(c), (j)), so a Class 1 or 2 may use bike lanes, sidewalks in the City's manner and greenways.
The other says the City's older words make an e-bike something other than a bicycle, and the statute lets "local ordinance" set the path rule for Class 1 and 2.
The Council's proposal record lists no e-bike ordinance for 2025 or 2026. Until one passes, three things hold for you either way:
- The street is lawful under both. Ride it by Indiana's bicycle rules, lit after dark.
- Keep your Class 3 off any path that does not run beside a road. Both texts bar it there.
- On a greenway, the posted sign governs. Ride at a pace that threatens no one, sound a bell 50 feet out, and call Indy Parks at 317‑327‑7275 before you commute on one.
Indiana's statute covers an e-bike with a motor not greater than 750 watts; Indianapolis's code never names one. Buy a labeled Class 1 or Class 2 if the Monon or a greenway is on your route, and keep to the street wherever a sign says otherwise.
Setting a $2,000 budget? Its guide reads 218 e-bikes against their makers' own specs and lands on 11 picks from seven brands.

Why buy from Redtail
If no Indianapolis floor has your model, Redtail delivers it free: "Redtail eBikes offers free shipping on every electric bike within the contiguous United States" (shipping policy). Orders are "prepared and dispatched within 1–3 business days of confirmation," and "most e-bikes arrive within 5–10 business days after dispatch."
Photograph the box when it reaches you: damage reported "within 48 hours of delivery" becomes a carrier claim Redtail files for you (How Buying Works), and a bike that "won't power on, won't charge, shows an error code, or has a faulty component" is "covered under manufacturer warranty," fixed remotely (refund policy).
Help comes from "US support by phone or email, before and after you buy" (contact page). Call (213) 444-4020 ("Every voicemail is returned") or email ("We typically respond to email within one business day"). Pay with Shop Pay, Apple Pay or Google Pay; the terms of service say which company you buy from.
Frequently Asked Questions — Indianapolis, IN eBikes
Are e-bikes legal in Indianapolis?
Yes. Indiana regulates your Class 1, 2 or 3 e-bike as a bicycle when it has "fully operable pedals" and a motor "not greater than seven hundred fifty (750) watts" (IC 9-13-2-49.2, IC 9-21-11-13.1(c)). Class 1 and 2 stop helping at 20 mph and Class 3 at 28 mph, and a throttle bike that stops at 20 mph is a Class 2.
Do you need a license, registration or insurance for an e-bike in Indiana?
You need no license, title or registration. Under IC 9-21-11-13.1(d)–(e), an e-bike rider is not subject to Indiana's driver's license law (IC 9-24) or its financial-responsibility law (IC 9-25), and the bike is exempt from title and registration.
Is there a minimum age or helmet law for e-bikes in Indiana?
Only for Class 3. A person under 15 "may not operate" one, though a younger passenger may ride on a Class 3 built to carry one, and every operator or passenger under 18 on a Class 3 must wear a helmet meeting CPSC or ASTM standards (IC 9-21-11-13.1(k)(3)–(5)).
Can you ride an e-bike on the sidewalk in Indianapolis?
The street is your safe choice. The City lets a bicycle use a sidewalk only seated, at no speed that threatens anyone, and with a bell sounded 50 feet out; a first violation is a $50 civil penalty (Sec. 431-603, Sec. 103-52). Its code defines a bicycle as human-powered while Indiana regulates an e-bike as one, so whether that permission covers yours is unsettled.
Can you ride an e-bike on the Monon Trail?
On a Class 1 or 2, by Indiana's rule: the statute admits both to paths open to bicycles "Unless otherwise specified by a statute, rule, or local ordinance", and a Class 3 only where a path runs beside a road (IC 9-21-11-13.1(k)). The City's park code bars "any motor-powered vehicle" off the road on City land without naming e-bikes (Sec. 631-122), so obey the posted signs.
Is there an Indiana or Indianapolis e-bike rebate?
Not for Indianapolis riders. The City's Electric Vehicles page names no e-bike incentive, and AES Indiana's EV Charging Rewards pay for off-peak home charging of an electric vehicle. Bloomington's pilot voucher, up to $2,000 for qualified low-income Bloomington residents, posted this update on February 11, 2026: "The city will be no longer be accepting applications for the 2026 e-Bike Voucher program."
Where can you rent an e-bike in Indianapolis?
From Pacers Bikeshare, whose pedal-assist e-bikes dock at "more than 50 stations". Its pricing page lists "E-BIKES: $5 CHECKOUT, $0.25/MIN", while its FAQ describes "an e-bike checkout fee of $3", so confirm what you pay in the BCycle app. If you live in Marion County and are 18 or older, you can get an IndyRides Free pass: "UNLIMITED 30-MIN TRIPS ON CLASSIC BIKES AND E-BIKES" for a year at no cost.
Who will work on an e-bike bought online in Indianapolis?
The Cycle Fix, a mobile shop that comes to you, prices building a boxed bike from $165, with "e-bikes/trikes start at $225." Midwest Trike & Bike lists repairs and installing Bafang e-assist motors. Just past the line, Eboom in Zionsville calls itself "an Authorized Pedego Service Center."

Sources, limitations and how this page was verified
The denominator
Every business any source tied to Indianapolis became a lead: 270 in all, read on October 24, 2026. Nine sell e-bikes from a storefront inside the city, and four more from just past its line.
The rest are outside the city (153), not bicycle stores (41), closed (22), duplicate another lead (9), left no trace (8), could not be checked (6), rent without selling (6), list an address the shop has left (5), name no e-bike on their own pages (3), have no storefront (3) or are temporarily closed (1).
Of the 153 outside the city, 14 stand within 3 miles of its line and 108 lie more than 50 miles away, many of them in Ontario.
Three storefronts among the six that could not be checked are worth a call. REI Castleton, (317) 585-1938, refused every reader; its bike shop page, as archived June 5, 2026, prices an E-Bike Tune and names no e-bike for sale.
Clermont Cyclery, (317) 639-9167, shows only a Facebook page, and PuPnPoP$tyle, (317) 331-0097, lists no website. Avalon Bike Co., Birdie Bicycle Werks and Perfect Repairs are Google Maps listings with no street address or readable website.
The sources, and what each one could and could not do
Makers' maps. Seven dealer rosters (Aventon, Bosch, Giant, Pedego, Specialized, Trek, Velotric) and four store locators (Lectric, Magnum, QuietKat, SWFT) were read to 19 miles from the city's center point; a listing makes a shop a dealer, not proof of today's stock.
Google Maps. Two searches in each of the City's 40 ZIP areas and 99 Indy Neighborhoods and in Beech Grove, Cumberland, Lawrence, Southport and Speedway found the businesses, and 286 place panels were then read for status and hours. The ten searches in those five places were run again with the state spelled out after the first run returned shops in Ontario.
Leads and websites. Superpages, OpenStreetMap, the Indiana directory's own records, sixteen questions to Claude's web search and seven Indianapolis Reddit threads supplied leads, never verdicts. Each shop's own site was then read where it opened: a priced product list, a stock line or the shop's own sentence counts, a menu entry alone does not.
City limits
Indianapolis here means the consolidated city the Indiana Code sets up: the old city plus "all other territory in the county except territory of an excluded city" (IC 36-3-1-4). Beech Grove, Lawrence, Southport and Speedway are excluded cities, and an amended IC 36-3-1-7 adds Cumberland on January 1, 2027.
The Census Geocoder placed every counted street address in the consolidated city, and the City's Cities and Towns layer agrees for each. Neighborhoods are the City's 99 Indy Neighborhoods, townships the Census's, and distances run straight from Meridian and Washington Streets, where house numbering begins (Sec. 431-301; OpenStreetMap node 6538870297).
Limitations
- Stock moves: a counted store sold e-bikes on October 24, 2026, and may not have your model the day you visit.
- Hours marked (Google Maps) are Google's listing, not the store's own.
- Bicycle Garage Indy's four stores, Bicycle Hospital, Matthews and Eboom are listed on makers' dealer maps; their own pages give hours and service, not stock.
- Indiana's 2019 statute and the City's older code read differently on greenways, bike lanes and sidewalks; the page prints both.
- IndyGo's Riders' Guide and code of conduct name no e-bike.
- Pacers Bikeshare prints two e-bike checkout fees, $5 and $3.
- Trail lengths are the City's and the Cultural Trail's own figures.
- The page is re-checked when the Council amends Chapter 431, 441, 631 or 905, the General Assembly amends IC 9-21-11-13.1, IndyGo publishes an e-bike rule or a listed store closes, moves or stops selling e-bikes; on January 1, 2027, when Cumberland leaves the consolidated city; and by April 2027.
