eBike Shops in Ontario, CA (2026): 3 Verified Stores

Ontario is California's 25th-largest city, with an estimated 185,285 residents in July 2024, in San Bernardino County. Its three e-bike sellers work three different ways: a family bike shop on West 4th Street, an e-bike showroom near the airport, and a warehouse where two online brands list their Ontario location.

The wrong door can cost you a trip, because Riding 5 is closed on weekends, and the wrong tires can cost you a train, because Metrolink turns away tires wider than 2.6 inches.

The 3 Verified eBike Shops in Ontario

Pick by how you want to buy. Bumstead's is a full-line shop with a repair bench, Riding 5 lets you ride several e-bike brands in one weekday visit, and the Wanamaker Avenue address suits a buyer who has already chosen a Hovsco or a TST online.

Bumstead's Bicycles — 1038 West 4th Street

"Since 1909, the Bumstead family has been pedaling bikes in Ontario," the shop says on its own site, which adds that "They carry an entire array of electric bikes, including bikes for commuting, travel, and just plain fun." Aventon's dealer map lists L. G. Bumstead Bicycles at this address.

Its e-bike page offers "the complete line of Trek ebikes, though we are not able to keep samples of all of them on the floor," and says the shop is "generally able to get any Trek product from our local warehouse in one day."

Riding 5 Electric Bikes — 1795 East Holt Boulevard

The store sits "at the corner of Holt Blvd and Corona Ave, minutes from Ontario International Airport and Ontario Mills," according to its Ontario page, which invites you to "Walk in, test ride, and ride home today."

The team services bikes it did not sell ("Our team services most e-bike brands, not just the ones we sell. Many repairs are completed same-day"), the store takes used e-bikes in trade, and its financing runs through Snap Finance, which the page describes as a "Lease-to-own model" with an "Early payoff option."

Riding 5's Ontario store is closed on weekends. For a Saturday test ride, the chain's Claremont store is about 7.5 miles away.

Hovsco and TST E-Bikes — 820 South Wanamaker Avenue

If you have already picked a Hovsco or a TST online, this is your door. Both brands publish this address. Hovsco's contact page names it the "Ontario Location," open Monday to Friday, and TST's own FAQ says "You can get the bike by US local pickup (address: 820 S Wanamaker Ave, Ontario CA 91761, US) or we ship the bike to your address."

Just Outside Ontario — Upland and Rancho Cucamonga

The closest e-bike sellers outside the city are Pedego Upland, about 2.6 miles north of City Hall and listed as open on Sunday, and Cyclery USA in Rancho Cucamonga, about 5.2 miles northeast and open seven days. If your only free day is a Saturday, those two are the closer options.

Riding 5's Claremont store, The Local Bike Stand in Pomona and BikeFIX in Chino are also within about six miles of you; the last two appear on Velotric's dealer roster.

Pedego Upland — 313 North Mountain Avenue

Pedego's store page describes it as "offering sales, rentals, accessories, and service," and Velotric's dealer roster tags the address for sales, test rides, service and rental.

Its rentals let you try an e-bike on your own streets before you buy, and the roster lists it open on Sunday, when Riding 5 is closed.

Cyclery USA — 7890 Haven Avenue, Rancho Cucamonga

Cyclery USA lists this Haven Avenue store alongside Redlands and Riverside. Its own site sells electric cruisers, commuters, road and mountain bikes and advertises "Service and Repair - 48hr Turnaround!", and Aventon's dealer map lists this store too. A bench that close matters if you buy a brand no Ontario shop stocks. All four Rancho Cucamonga stores, and the rules that city wrote for e-bikes, have their own page.

Omnitrans and Metrolink — eBikes on Transit

An Omnitrans bus carries your e-bike on its front rack, and Metrolink takes it aboard if its battery and tires pass the rules. Ontario's Metrolink stop is Ontario–East, 3330 E Francis St, on the Riverside Line.

Omnitrans' rider guide says "Bicycles are not allowed inside the bus, with the exception of our sbX rapid transit vehicles." A folded bike can come aboard, but it "must be kept out of the aisle." Riders under 14 need an adult along: "Children under the age of 14 may use racks only if accompanied by a bus-riding adult (age 18 and over)."

Metrolink's bike rules cap a bike at "32 inches wide x 58 inches long" with a "Maximum tire width: 2.6 inches," and conductors or staff "may deny boarding if an electric bike is deemed unsafe."

Where to Ride Your eBike in Ontario

Inside the city, the paved path along West Cucamonga Creek is the one dedicated trail you have, and whether an e-bike may use it is an open question. The Pacific Electric Trail runs just north, through Upland and Rancho Cucamonga.

The West Cucamonga Creek Trail

The city's West Cucamonga Creek Trail System runs "from Mission Boulevard to Philadelphia Street between Grove Avenue and Baker Avenue," with a "Paved Hiking and Bicycle Trail, 2.4 Miles Long" and "1.3 Miles of Equestrian Trails." The page says it was jointly developed by the San Bernardino County Flood Control District and the City of Ontario along the flood control channel.

E-bikes on the creek trail: an open question

Until the city says which reading applies, walk your bike on the trail itself; that holds under both readings below. Riding across the trail where it is part of a city street is allowed either way, and park grass is closed to "any motor-powered bicycle" under Ontario Municipal Code § 10-1.20(a).

One reading bars it. § 10-1.20(b) makes it unlawful "to operate any motorized vehicle upon any City-owned trail system, except to cross a paved trail system when it is a part of the City's street right-of-way." An e-bike has a motor.

The other reading allows it. That section dates from 1981, decades before § 21213 and California's three e-bike classes took effect in 2016.

Vehicle Code § 231 says "An electric bicycle is a bicycle," and § 21207.5(b) says the agency "having jurisdiction over an equestrian trail, or hiking or recreational trail, may prohibit, by ordinance, the operation of an electric bicycle or any class of electric bicycle on that trail." The parks chapter does not use that power by name.

§ 10-1.20(b) also covers only a "City-owned trail system," and the city's trail page does not say who owns the path.

The Pacific Electric Trail, just over the line

The nearest mapped stretch of the Pacific Electric Trail is about 2.6 miles north of City Hall, and the Census places that point in Upland. The trail's master plan was prepared for Claremont, Montclair, Upland, Rancho Cucamonga, Fontana and Rialto.

Rancho Cucamonga's own rules apply once you ride into it. Its e-bike ordinance page says Class 1 and Class 2 bikes are "Allowed on bike paths and shared-use trails," while Class 3 gets "Bike lanes allowed, no trails, sidewalks or park paths."

California eBike Laws — What Makes an eBike Legal in Ontario

Ontario writes no e-bike rule of its own, so the state's rules are the ones that decide your ride here. Every one of the 1,765 sections of the city's municipal code was read on September 14, 2026, and not one uses the words e-bike, electric bicycle, pedal assist or Class 1, 2 or 3.

Three older city sections still reach a bicycle: a 1953 licensing chapter, a traffic rule handing a rider a driver's duties, and a parks rule closing City-owned trails to motorized vehicles.

What counts as an electric bicycle

Vehicle Code § 312.5(a) defines one as "a bicycle equipped with fully operable pedals and an electric motor that does not exceed 750 watts of power." § 231 adds "An electric bicycle is a bicycle," and § 312.5(b) makes a person riding one "subject to Article 4 (commencing with Section 21200)," the Vehicle Code's bicycle rules.

§ 312.5(a)(1)–(3) also sets the speeds. A Class 1 motor "provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling" and "ceases to provide assistance when the bicycle reaches the speed of 20 miles per hour." A Class 2 motor "may be used exclusively to propel the bicycle" and stops assisting at 20 mph. A Class 3 stops assisting at 28 mph and is "equipped with a speedometer."

Licensing: a 1953 chapter and a 2023 state law

You can ride without an Ontario bicycle license. Vehicle Code § 39002(a), in force since January 1, 2023, says a city or county that adopts a bicycle licensing ordinance "shall not prohibit the operation of an unlicensed bicycle."

The city's bicycle chapter, which dates from 1953, still says "It shall be unlawful for any person to operate or use a bicycle in the City which is not currently licensed by the City pursuant to the provisions of this chapter or by some other City or County in the State" (§ 4-2.02(a)).

§ 4-2.01(a) defines a bicycle as a device "propelled by human power through a system of belts, chains, or gears and which has wheels at least twenty (20) inches in diameter and a frame size of at least fourteen (14) inches." The chapter does not say whether a bike with a motor counts, and § 39002(a) applies either way.

For a person other than a minor, the chapter's own penalty is "a fine of not more than Five Dollars ($5.00)" on a first conviction (§ 4-2.14(b)).

The same chapter gives you something to keep. § 4-2.11 requires "Each bicycle retailer" to supply a record of "the year, make, serial number, and general description of the bicycle," and to forward a copy to the Police Department within ten days. Keep yours with the receipt.

Age, helmets and licenses

• Class 1 or Class 2: the age floor of 16 in § 21213(a) is written for Class 3. A rider under 18 wears "a properly fitted and fastened bicycle helmet" (§ 21212(a)).
• Class 3: "A person under 16 years of age shall not operate a class 3 electric bicycle" (§ 21213(a)), and every rider and passenger wears a helmet on a street, bikeway or public path or trail (§ 21213(b)).
• License, registration or plates: none. § 24016(b) says the rider "is not subject to the provisions of this code relating to financial responsibility, driver's licenses, registration, and license plate requirements."

Sidewalks and the street

No Ontario ordinance keeps a bicycle or an e-bike off a sidewalk. California hands that decision to each city: Vehicle Code § 21206 says the state's bicycle chapter "does not prevent local authorities, by ordinance, from regulating the registration of bicycles and the parking and operation of bicycles on pedestrian or bicycle facilities."

Ontario has never written one. Forty-six sections of the code use the word sidewalk and every one of them is about vending, obstruction or what counts as public property. Where the pavement is busy, walk your bike: people on foot have the right of way.

On the street, Ontario Municipal Code § 4-6.305 gives "Every person riding a bicycle" upon a highway "all the rights" and "all the duties applicable to the driver of a vehicle pursuant to the provisions of this chapter," the city's traffic chapter. § 4-6.810 keeps bicycles off any street "established as a freeway," where official signs give notice.

Rebates

The state voucher you may have read about is over. The California E-Bike Incentive Project "began in December 2022 and concluded in December 2025," after distributing 2,246 incentives.

Ontario's utility-contacts page names Southern California Edison as the electric provider for businesses in the city, and SCE's Pre-Owned EV Rebate FAQ says "electric bikes, electric motorcycles, electric scooters, and neighborhood vehicles are not eligible for the rebate." Budget the full price when you compare.

Fines for breaking a city rule

Under Ontario Municipal Code § 1-2.01(a), a violation is a misdemeanor "unless the citing official or the prosecuting attorney determines that it would in the interests of justice to prosecute the offense as an infraction."

An infraction carries "A fine not exceeding One Hundred Dollars ($100.00) for a first violation," up to $200 for a second violation of the same provision within one year, and up to $500 for each further one that year (§ 1-2.01(b)).

A misdemeanor carries a fine of up to $1,000, up to six months in county jail, or both (§ 1-2.01(c)). The bicycle chapter sets its own lower penalty in § 4-2.14.

How many electric bike shops does Ontario, CA have?

Three places inside Ontario, California city limits sell e-bikes as of September 13, 2026: Bumstead's Bicycles, 1038 W 4th St; Riding 5 Electric Bikes, 1795 E Holt Blvd; and the Hovsco and TST E-Bikes location at 820 S Wanamaker Ave, counted once. Pedego Upland and Cyclery USA in Rancho Cucamonga are the closest sellers outside the city.

Can I ride an electric bike on the sidewalk in Ontario, CA?

No city rule stops you. Ontario's municipal code carries no sidewalk-riding rule for bicycles, and Vehicle Code § 21206 leaves that to whichever city chooses to write one. Yield to people on foot, and walk your bike where the sidewalk is busy.

Are e-bikes legal in Ontario, California?

Yes. Vehicle Code § 312.5(a) defines three classes of electric bicycle with fully operable pedals and a motor of no more than 750 watts, and § 312.5(b) makes an e-bike rider subject to the Vehicle Code's bicycle rules. A vehicle "modified to have its operable pedals removed" is not an e-bike under § 312.5(d)(3).

How fast can an e-bike go in Ontario, CA?

Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes stop giving motor assistance at 20 mph, and Class 3 at 28 mph with a speedometer (§ 312.5(a)(1)–(3)). On the road, Ontario's § 4-6.305 gives you the duties of a driver under the city's traffic chapter when you ride.

Do I need a license or registration for an e-bike in Ontario?

No. California exempts an e-bike rider from driver's license, registration and plate rules (§ 24016(b)). Ontario's bicycle chapter still asks for a city license (§ 4-2.02(a)), but under Vehicle Code § 39002(a) the city cannot stop you riding without one.

Can I take an e-bike on Omnitrans or Metrolink in Ontario?

Yes on both, with limits. Omnitrans allows "Electric and folding bikes with lithium batteries" on its bus racks, with tires at least 20 inches in diameter, and inside sbX vehicles. On Metrolink your bike needs pedals, a sealed battery the manufacturer installed and tires 2.6 inches wide or narrower, and it rides switched off with no charging on the train.

Where can I ride an e-bike in Ontario, CA?

On city streets. Whether § 10-1.20(b)'s ban on "any motorized vehicle" on City-owned trails reaches an e-bike on the paved 2.4-mile West Cucamonga Creek Trail is unsettled, so walking the bike there holds under either reading. The nearest mapped stretch of the Pacific Electric Trail is about 2.6 miles north of City Hall in Upland, and Rancho Cucamonga's rules keep Class 3 bikes off its trails.

Is there an e-bike rebate in Ontario, CA?

California's E-Bike Incentive Project concluded in December 2025, and Southern California Edison, which Ontario's utility-contacts page names as the electric provider for businesses in the city, lists electric bikes as not eligible for its Pre-Owned EV Rebate. Sources, limitations and how this page was verified

How the count was built

The candidate pool came from nine routes: an OpenStreetMap query bounded by the Ontario city relation, which returned one object; the retailer roster from California's closed e-bike incentive program, which named Hovsco; Velotric's, Aventon's and Pedego's own dealer rosters; a cyclist-mapping directory; the brands' own store pages; the search results and AI answers for Ontario e-bike queries; and the headings of pages ranking for them.

The seven Ontario candidates with a street address all came back as "Ontario city" at the Census geocoder; the eighth and ninth rows, a second brand at a shared address and an OpenStreetMap point, sit at those addresses or inside the city's mapped boundary.

A business counts only where its own published words or its maker's dealer roster say it sells electric bikes. Hovsco and TST publish the same address and the same weekday hours, so that address counts once.

Numbered limitations

1. Three Ontario candidates could not be confirmed from their own websites or listings, and none is recorded as closed. Performance Bicycle at 4400 Ontario Mills Parkway appears on a cyclist map, but the chain's store page returned not found; Go4E's website could not be reached on September 13, 2026; and Cancha Verde, the one sports-shop point OpenStreetMap maps in the city, lists no street, website or phone.
2. Haoqi Ebike publishes an Ontario address and is not counted. Its contact page prints the Milliken Avenue address with a note that return requests go to its email, and the page does not describe a showroom or pickup at that address.
3. Walmart's Ontario Supercenter is not listed. A search result names a bike-shop page for the store, which could not be read directly, and a department inside a general-merchandise store is not counted as an e-bike shop on this page.
4. Some online answers put the Pacific Electric Trail inside Ontario. The trail's master plan names six other cities, OpenStreetMap maps no segment inside Ontario's boundary against five named ways in Upland, and the Census places the nearest mapped point in Upland.
5. The creek-trail question is unsettled and is set out both ways above.
6. Store hours differ between sources for two businesses. Bumstead's own site and Aventon's dealer map give different opening times, and Pedego Upland's hours come from Velotric's roster, which marks them "Confirm With Store."
7. The municipal code is current through Ordinance 3338, passed July 21, 2026. A later ordinance may not yet appear online, and the Development Code, adopted by reference in § 9-1.01, is published separately and was not reviewed for this page.
