How we verified this directory — Milad Ghobadibeygvand, BScN
The Michigan directory, seven makers' dealer maps, four store locators, OpenStreetMap, 624 Google Maps searches, 16 answer-engine questions and 11 Reddit threads named 203 possible e-bike sellers. The Census geocoder placed 182 of them against the city's boundary and the City's neighborhood map, and the websites of those in or near Detroit were opened.
A store makes the list when its own site sells e-bikes or a maker's dealer map names it, and its Google Maps listing shows it open. Closed shops, rentals, factories, motorcycle dealers and stores naming no e-bike stay off. Verified October 31, 2026.
Quick Answer
Of the e-bike shops in Detroit, one sells from a storefront inside the city, verified October 31, 2026: DMWelectric.bike at 5407 Michigan Avenue, whose shop page prices e-bikes from five brands. Eight more stand within 2.9 miles past the line, in Ferndale, Hazel Park, Dearborn, Allen Park and the Grosse Pointes.
Michigan allows Class 1, 2 and 3 e-bikes with a motor of not greater than 750 watts, and on an e-bike you follow a bicyclist's rules. If none of these floors has your bike, every pick in the winter e-bike guide ships free to Detroit, and the Michigan e-bike law page has the long version.
In this directory, Detroit is the City of Detroit: 649,095 people in the Census Bureau's 2025 estimate, on 138.7 square miles of land (2025 Gazetteer). Hamtramck and Highland Park sit inside Detroit's borders but are cities of their own, and Ferndale, Dearborn and the Grosse Pointes are separate municipalities; their stores follow the one inside the line.
The 1 Verified eBike Shop in Detroit
Detroit has bike shops in Corktown, Midtown, Rivertown and on the east and west sides, and one storefront inside the city whose own pages sell e-bikes. Start with your need:

The city's other bike shops with websites sell and fix bicycles, but none of the pages read on their sites names an e-bike, and no maker's dealer map lists them for e-bikes: Metropolis Cycles in Corktown, Wheelhouse Detroit on the RiverWalk, The Hub of Detroit in Midtown and Bike Tech on East Warren.
Livernois Bike Shop, The Garage Detroit on Greenfield, G & R Bike Shop on Grand River and Bryan Boss Bike & Scooter Repair on Joy Road publish no website to read, so call them before you go.
Detroit Bikes, whose website sells its "DETROIT BIKES–ELECTRIC • USA MADE" line, says "We have a factory in Detroit" at 13639 Elmira Street (Detroit Bikes); none of its pages read for this directory names a shop or showroom there.
Commuting downtown or to New Center? The commuter guide fits its 18 picks with what a daily ride needs, from the 750-watt line to hills, rain and winter, and shipping to Detroit is free.

DDOT, SMART, the QLINE and MoGo — Taking an eBike on Transit
Pick your bus before you pick your bike. Detroit's two bus systems treat a motor differently. DDOT's Bicycles and Transit Policy says "Electric bikes with a sealed battery compartment are permitted" on its racks, while SMART's bike rack page, read October 31, 2026, says "The rack will NOT accommodate tandems, tricycles, recumbents or any motorized bike."
| Service | What its own page says | With an e-bike |
|---|---|---|
| DDOT buses | "Bikes are not allowed on the inside of the bus. Currently bike racks are available on most of our fleet." | The front rack, if the battery compartment is sealed |
| SMART buses | Racks carry two bikes, three on articulated buses; "any motorized bike" is refused | Not on the rack |
| QLINE streetcar | "Bikes, strollers and personal scooters are allowed on the qline, space permitting" | Center section, upright on the hanging rack |
| Detroit People Mover | None of its six rider pages mentions bicycles | Ask the station staff first |
Riding to the QLINE? Walk your bike at the station: Detroit's code bars riding a bicycle "at a station, upon a streetcar, or directly upon the rail tracks" (Sec. 47-8-18), and an officer there may "detain and issue a citation" (Sec. 47-8-2).
DDOT's policy is its FY 2014–2015 edition, still served on the City's site; the department's own page now says bikes ride on the racks, not inside (DDOT).
You can rent an e-bike from MoGo, Detroit's bike share. Its own feed lists four electric-assist bicycle types among its fleet, and 60 of its 81 stations, read October 31, 2026, stand inside Detroit (MoGo station feed).
Its pricing page gives Pay As You Go at "$1 unlock, $0.25/min" and prints no separate e-bike rate. The QLINE bars bike-share bikes: "Micromobility rideshare options, such as Mogo, Lime, Bird, Spin, and others are not permitted on the QLINE" (Rules of the Rail).
Riding the whole trip instead of the bus? The commuter guide's long-range and cargo picks cover the 30-mile round trip and the groceries, and its torque-sensor picks give "assist that answers your legs."
Compare the commuter picksTrail Access — the RiverWalk, the Dequindre Cut and the Joe Louis Greenway
On the RiverWalk, keep it under 7 mph. The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy lists among the things prohibited "E-scooters, e-bikes, & other electric personal transporters over 7mph," and asks bikers to "yield right of way to pedestrians" (Rules & Guidelines). Its rules cover the "Detroit Riverfront Conservancy managed parks and public spaces," the Dequindre Cut Greenway among them.
Off the riverfront, state law sets the default for paved trails. "An individual may operate a class 1 electric bicycle on a linear trail that has an asphalt, crushed limestone, or similar surface, or a rail trail," while Class 2 and Class 3 bikes may ride there only "if authorized by the local authority or agency of this state having jurisdiction over the trail" (MCL 257.662a(8)–(9)).
A trail designated nonmotorized with a natural, unsurfaced tread stays closed to e-bikes unless its authority opens it (MCL 257.662a(10)).
On the City's Bike Lanes layer, 29.2 miles of shared-use path run inside Detroit, and the file names who has jurisdiction over all but 1.8 miles of it.
| Path | What the City's file and the owner's page say | A Class 2 or Class 3 e-bike |
|---|---|---|
| The Detroit RiverWalk | "almost five miles from Gabriel Richard Park on the east to Ralph Wilson Park" (Conservancy); 5.7 miles of the City's path file name the Conservancy | Allowed at 7 mph or less, by the Conservancy's rule |
| The Dequindre Cut | "a nearly two-mile long below-grade recreational pedestrian path" with "a 20-foot-wide paved pathway" (Conservancy) | The same 7 mph rule |
| The Joe Louis Greenway | 12.3 miles open inside Detroit on the City's route layer, 3.6 more under construction | Only where the City authorizes it, by MCL 257.662a(9) |
| City and parks paths | 12.5 miles under the City and 7.2 under Parks and Rec in the City's file | Only where authorized, by MCL 257.662a(9) |
Buying for the greenways? A Class 1 bike, pedal-assist to 20 mph, is the one state law lets onto a paved linear trail by default; a throttle or 28-mph bike needs the trail owner's say-so.
Inside a park, the City's code keeps any bicycle off "the bridle paths, foot walks, pedestrian trails, sidewalks, or planted places of any park, public place or boulevard, except in areas as may be designated by the Recreation Department" (Sec. 33-1-42). In Hart Plaza you may ride "only upon clearly designated bike paths" (Sec. 33-2-8), and in Campus Martius Park bicycles "may be walked through or parked" (Sec. 33-2-28).
Michigan eBike Laws — What Makes an eBike Legal in Detroit
Check the label before you pay. Michigan requires the manufacturer or distributor to affix a label showing "the classification number, top assisted speed, and motor wattage" on every e-bike offered for sale or distribution in the state (MCL 257.662a(2)), and a bike whose motor "exceeds 750 watts" is not an electric bicycle under Michigan law (MCL 257.662a(3)).
| Rule | The statute's text | Where it is |
|---|---|---|
| What counts | "A seat or saddle," "Fully operable pedals for human propulsion" and "An electric motor of not greater than 750 watts" | MCL 257.13e |
| Class 1 | Assistance "only when the rider is pedaling," ceasing at 20 miles per hour | MCL 257.13e |
| Class 2 | A motor that propels the bike "to a speed of no more than 20 miles per hour, whether the rider is pedaling or not" | MCL 257.13e |
| Class 3 | Pedal assist ceasing at 28 miles per hour | MCL 257.13e |
| No license or plate | "Motor vehicle does not include an electric bicycle" | MCL 257.33 |
| A bicyclist's duties | A rider "is subject to the same requirements under this act as an individual riding a bicycle" | MCL 257.662a(1) |
| Class 3 age | It "shall not be operated by an individual less than 14 years of age" | MCL 257.662a(4) |
| Class 3 helmet | Riders and passengers under 18 wear "a properly fitted and fastened bicycle helmet" | MCL 257.662a(4) |
On a sidewalk, you ride as a pedestrian's guest: a bicyclist there "shall yield the right-of-way to pedestrians and shall give an audible signal before overtaking" (MCL 257.660c), and a park's sidewalks are off-limits in Detroit.
Breaking a rule costs money. Where a breach of the Vehicle Code is a civil infraction, the general penalty is "a civil fine of not more than $100.00," plus costs (MCL 257.907(2)(a)), and Detroit adopts the Code's penalties as its own (Sec. 46-3-1).
Don't leave it in the grass. Detroit's code counts "an electric bicycle" as an electric personal mobility device (Sec. 47-10-1), and the Department of Public Works may presume one abandoned when it is "located for any period of time in a grassy or otherwise vegetated portion of a public place," or left inoperable in a public place for 48 hours, and remove it (Sec. 47-10-6).
To claim it back, you pay "the cost of removal, inventory, and storage" (Sec. 43-8-8). Lock it to a rack on pavement.
Changes are pending, and none is law. Senate Bill 1156, "regulations for use of e-bikes by minors," was introduced September 10, 2026, and sits in the Senate Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. House Bill 6166, a "special operator's license" for certain electric mobility devices, has sat in the House committee since July 3, 2026.
At City Hall, the Legislative Policy Division drafted a resolution on October 7, 2026, at Council Member Angela Whitfield-Calloway's request, that "strongly urges the Michigan legislature to pass Michigan Senate Bill 1156 and Michigan House Bill 6166" (City of Detroit).

Pick the right e-bike classWhere to Ride Your eBike in Detroit
Start your rides on the protected lanes. Measured on the City's Bike Lanes layer, 175.9 miles of bike facilities run inside Detroit, among them 58.8 miles of painted lane, 40.9 of protected lane, 4.9 buffered, 31.4 of shared-lane markings, 10.7 of signed route and 29.2 of shared-use path.
The Dequindre Cut is "a key part of the 27.5-mile Joe Louis Greenway," says the Conservancy, and 12.3 miles of the greenway are open inside the city on the City's route layer. State law lets you ride an e-bike anywhere on a road a bicycle may use, "including, but not limited to, a lane designated for the exclusive use of bicycles and the shoulder" (MCL 257.662a(6)).
Why buy your e-bike from Redtail
If none of these floors has the bike you want, Redtail ships its e-bikes free to Detroit: the shipping policy promises "free shipping on every electric bike within the contiguous United States." Each order is "dispatched within 1–3 business days of confirmation," and most bikes "arrive within 5–10 business days after dispatch, depending on your location."
Check your box on delivery. How Buying Works says "transit damage has to reach us within 48 hours of delivery and we file the carrier claim for you," and a bike that is "dead on arrival, will not charge, or throws an error code out of the box" goes through the maker's warranty with Redtail coordinating. "Change-of-mind returns are 72 hours, unopened only, at a 15% restocking fee."
You can call Redtail's US line at (213) 444‑4020, and "We typically respond to email within one business day" (contact). Checkout takes Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and the terms of service name the company you are buying from.
Frequently Asked Questions — Detroit eBikes
Are e-bikes legal in Detroit?
Yes, if your bike meets Michigan's definition: a seat, working pedals and a motor of not greater than 750 watts, in Class 1, 2 or 3 (MCL 257.13e). Detroit's code adopts the state's vehicle code (Sec. 46-3-1), and on an e-bike you have a bicyclist's duties (MCL 257.662a(1)). A motor over 750 watts takes the bike outside the definition.
Can you ride an e-bike on the sidewalk in Detroit?
On a street sidewalk, Michigan treats you as a bicyclist who must "yield the right-of-way to pedestrians" and give "an audible signal" before passing, unless a sign bars bikes there (MCL 257.660c). In a Detroit park, public place or boulevard, a bicycle stays off the sidewalks and foot walks unless the Recreation Department designates the area (Sec. 33-1-42).
Do e-bikes need to be registered in Michigan?
No. "Motor vehicle does not include an electric bicycle" (MCL 257.33), so no plate, title or license applies to one that meets the definition. Detroit residents may register any bicycle with the Police Department if they choose: "Any resident of the City may voluntarily register the resident's bicycle" (Sec. 46-2-2).
Can you ride an e-bike on the Detroit RiverWalk?
Yes, at 7 mph or less. The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy prohibits "E-scooters, e-bikes, & other electric personal transporters over 7mph" on the riverfront it manages, and bikers yield to pedestrians (Rules & Guidelines). The same rules page covers the Dequindre Cut, the below-grade path from Eastern Market to the river.
Does Detroit have e-bike share?
Yes. MoGo's own feed lists four electric-assist bicycle types, and 60 of its 81 stations are inside Detroit (MoGo feed, read October 31, 2026). Pay As You Go costs "$1 unlock, $0.25/min" on its pricing page, which prints no separate e-bike rate. MoGo bikes may not ride the QLINE.
Is Detroit Bikes still in business?
Its website was selling bikes on October 31, 2026, its Detroit Bikes–Electric line among them, and says "We have a factory in Detroit" at 13639 Elmira Street (Detroit Bikes). None of its pages read for this directory names a shop or showroom, and Google Maps files it as a manufacturer, so buy online or through a dealer; DMWelectric.bike prices the Detroit E-Sparrow.
Is Michigan banning e-bikes?
No bill would ban them. SB 1156 would set rules for minors and HB 6166 a special operator's license for some devices; both sit in committee, and a resolution drafted for Detroit's City Council in October 2026 urges their passage. Today the e-bike section of the Vehicle Code sets age rules for Class 3 alone: no operator under 14, and a helmet for riders and passengers under 18 (MCL 257.662a(4)).
Who repairs e-bikes in Detroit?
Inside the city, DMWelectric.bike is on Velotric's dealer map for service. Just past the line, Amp Brothers in Hazel Park says "If you have an eBike issue, or need assistance servicing an eBike, we are your guys" (Amp Brothers), and Downtown Ferndale Bike Shop says it has been "SELLING, SERVICING, AND REPAIRING E-BIKES SINCE 2013!" Call first with your motor system's name.

Sources, limitations and how this page was verified
The denominator
Every possible e-bike seller any source tied to Detroit became a lead: 203 in all, decided on October 31, 2026. One sells e-bikes from a storefront inside the city and 8 from within 2.9 miles past it.
The other 52 leads inside the city are not bicycle stores (18), could not be checked (10), are closed (8, and 2 more temporarily), name no e-bike on their own pages (6), have no storefront (3), rent bikes (2), repeat another lead (2) or left no trace (1).
Of the other 30 leads within 3 miles past the line, 12 could not be checked, 8 are not bicycle stores, 3 are closed, 3 repeat another lead, 2 have no storefront, 1 names no e-bike and 1 rents bikes.
The rest sit beyond 3 miles (91) or could not be placed (21): of those 21, five are businesses in other towns, five left no trace, three could not be checked, three rent bikes, three have no storefront, one is temporarily closed and one is not a bicycle store.
The ten inside the city that could not be checked are G & R Bike Shop, Bryan Boss Bike & Scooter Repair, Livernois Bike Shop and The Garage Detroit, which publish no website.
The others are Motive Ev on Monroe Street, Detroit Boxing Jungle on Greenfield, E Bikes Rides and a card named bicycle repair hub, Google Maps listings with nothing of their own to read; Azzo's on East Eight Mile, filed only as a store; and Vela Bikes, whose domain now serves a gambling page.
Marked permanently closed on Google Maps: Trek Bicycle Detroit Midtown on Woodward, Bikes & Coffee, Motorless City Bicycle Co., Downtown Detroit Bike Shop on Peterboro, Wally's Bicycles, Blinged Out Bikes, Detroit Cycle Supply Co and Richard's Detroit Yamaha. Southwest Rides and Motown Mopeds are marked temporarily closed.
The sources, and what each one could and could not do
The makers. Six dealer rosters (Aventon, Giant, Pedego, Specialized, Trek, Velotric) and four store locators (Lectric, Magnum, QuietKat, SWFT) were read to 16 miles from the Census Bureau's point for Detroit. Bosch's dealer map could not be read on October 31, 2026, so its rows come from the Michigan directory's read of October 11, 2026. A listing marks a dealer, not stock.
Google Maps. Two searches in each of 34 ZIP code areas, 240 neighborhood names, 36 places within 3 miles of the line and the two cities inside it found the businesses. A follow-up search for the leads in or near Detroit and the new bike-trade cards read their status, and all 793 cards filed under other trades were read by name.
Leads and websites. OpenStreetMap, the Michigan directory, Claude's web search and Reddit supplied leads, never verdicts; all 11 Reddit threads were read. On a shop's own site, a priced list, a stock line or its own sentence counts; a menu entry does not.
Detroit limits
The Census Geocoder placed every counted address inside the Incorporated Place "Detroit city," and the Census Bureau's TIGERweb boundary agrees. Distances run straight from Detroit City Hall, the point the Census geocoder gives for 2 Woodward Avenue, which OpenStreetMap's outline of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center confirms within 0.08 mile. Miles past the line are measured to the City's 205 neighborhoods.
Limitations
- Stock moves: a counted store may not have your model the day you visit.
- Warren Bike Shop and Bikes, Blades & Boards are counted on Aventon's dealer map and Ted's Bike Shop on Bosch's map as read October 11, 2026; Bosch's map could not be read on October 31, and none of the 14 bikes on Ted's online bike list that day was an e-bike.
- Hours come from each store's own pages; where none could be read, the card says to call.
- DDOT's policy that permits sealed-battery e-bikes on its racks is its FY 2014–2015 edition; the department's current page speaks of bikes in general.
- The Michigan DNR's e-bike page refused our request on October 31, 2026, so state-park rules, Belle Isle's among them, are left to the Michigan law page.
- The lane and path miles are a segment-by-segment measure of the City's Bike Lanes layer, in which 1.8 path miles name no jurisdiction.
- The nearby list covers the businesses the sources placed within 3 miles past the line; a store no map, list, search or forum named would be missing.
- The page is re-checked by April 2027, sooner if SB 1156 or HB 6166 moves, or a listed store closes, moves or stops selling e-bikes.
