How we verified this directory — Milad Ghobadibeygvand, BScN
Alabama's candidates came from seven makers' dealer maps, OpenStreetMap shop entries, REI's store pages, the businesses AI search engines named, and Google Maps searches run in all 67 counties, in every city, town and census-designated place of 2,000 or more, and across the ZIP areas of Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery and Tuscaloosa. Each candidate's own website and its Google Maps listing were then opened and read.
A store is listed when its own site offers e-bikes for sale, or a maker's dealer map names it at that street address, and Google Maps shows it open. Rental desks, repair-only shops and mobile mechanics, golf-cart, car and powersports dealers, and closed storefronts are left out.

Quick Answer
Alabama has 39 verified e-bike shops as of October 21, 2026, in 24 communities across 15 of its 67 counties. Jefferson County has the most, 8, and nine of Alabama's ten cities of 50,000 or more have a store inside their limits.
Alabama calls a bike with working pedals and "an electric motor of less than 750 watts" an electric bicycle (§ 32-1-1.1(16)); inside that line it rides as a bicycle and needs no license, registration, title or insurance (§ 32-5A-267). Alabama has no e-bike tax credit, and none of the 62 electric utilities whose websites were read for this page offers a rebate (rebates).
Nothing close by? Every e-bike we sell ships free within the contiguous United States (shipping policy), and our Alabama e-bike law guide covers where each class may ride.
Three of Alabama's twelve regional councils hold most of its e-bike counters: Greater Birmingham (10), South Alabama (10) and Top of Alabama (7). Between them they have 27 of the 39 stores listed here, 69.2%, more than their 51.6% share of Alabama's people (Census Bureau 2025 estimates).
A mailing address names a post office, while a city's limits are a Census line, and in Alabama the two part ways (each store placed by its own point with the Census geocoder):
- One of the four listed stores with a Birmingham address is outside the city of Birmingham, in Vestavia Hills.
- One of the four listed stores with a Huntsville address is outside the city of Huntsville, in unincorporated Madison County.
- All three listed stores with a Mobile address are inside the city.
Across the state, four of the 39 stores that print a mailing town are outside the place it names, so read a listing's county before you plan the drive.
Alabama's 67 counties fall into twelve regional councils, which the Alabama Association of Regional Councils lists county by county ("The generic term 'Regional Council' is used to refer to all twelve"), each serving a planning and development district the Governor designates under § 11-85-51. The store listings below follow those twelve regions, with each county in one of them.
A listing gives the street address, a phone number where a source confirms one, and a grade that names the check proving the store sells e-bikes.
The building on the cover is the Alabama State Capitol in Montgomery. "In 1851, the present capitol, also in the Greek Revival style, was constructed on the previous building's foundations," says the Alabama Historical Commission, which runs the building's tours (History of the Alabama State Capitol, read October 21, 2026).
Alabama's eBike Map, County by County
The table lists Alabama's twenty-seven counties of 50,000 or more people, home to 83.0% of the state's residents (Census Bureau 2025 estimates). "Verified stores" counts each store in the county its own point falls in, and "Open leads" counts bike businesses there not yet confirmed to sell e-bikes. Every listed store is in one of these counties.

Nine of Alabama's ten cities of 50,000 or more have verified stores inside their own limits: Huntsville 4, Mobile 3, Birmingham 3, Montgomery 2, Auburn 2, Tuscaloosa 1, Hoover 1, Dothan 1 and Madison 1 (Census Bureau 2025 estimates). Decatur has none inside its limits; the nearest-store table names the closest counter to it.
Greater Birmingham and South Alabama list the most stores, ten each of the 39, though Greater Birmingham has 22.6% of Alabama's people and South Alabama 13.8% (Census Bureau 2025 estimates). That makes South Alabama the best served per resident, 1.4 stores per 100,000 people, against 0.8 for Alabama as a whole; Alabama-Tombigbee and South Central Alabama have no listed store at all, together 5.1% of the state's people.
If you live in Alabama-Tombigbee, the closest listed counters are a drive away: from Selma, Capitol City Bicycle Repair & Accessories in Montgomery is 42.1 miles away, and from Demopolis, VeloCity Cycles in Tuscaloosa is 51.5 miles away, each in a straight line from the Census Bureau's point for that town.
If you live in South Central Alabama, the closest listed counters are a drive away: from Tuskegee, James Bros Bikes in Auburn is 16.0 miles away, and from Troy, EBike Oasis in Montgomery is 43.0 miles away, each in a straight line from the Census Bureau's point for that town.

Bottom line Start from your own county rather than your region: twelve of the twenty-seven counties in the table have no verified store yet, and the region listings below give each store's street. With no counter near you, every e-bike we sell ships free.
Check the frame label before the test ride. Alabama draws its line at the motor's watts, and since January 1, 2022 makers have had to label each e-bike with its class, top assisted speed and wattage. The buying guide's seven-spec checklist starts at the motor and ends at weight and payload, and it spells out what Class 1, 2 and 3 mean before you choose.
Read the buying guideAlabama eBike Law — 2026 Quick Reference
In Alabama your e-bike rides as a bicycle. § 32-5A-267(a) gives it "all the rights and privileges" and "all of the duties" of a bicycle, and § 32-5A-267(b) frees it from the rules on "driver's licenses, registration, certificates of title", plates and insurance. The one number to check before you buy sits in the definition: a motor "of less than 750 watts".
Every section below was read on ALISON, the Alabama Legislature's own code service, on October 21, 2026, and no bill of the 2025 or 2026 sessions names a bicycle or an e-bike in its title or subject (rebates). The Code names the electric bicycle in five sections, all in Title 32.
For the longer read, see our Alabama e-bike law guide; the rules here are the ones that decide which bike to buy and where you can ride it.
- What counts as an e-bike. § 32-1-1.1(16) defines "A bicycle equipped with fully operable pedals, a saddle or seat for the rider, and an electric motor of less than 750 watts" in three classes: Class 1 assists only while you pedal and stops at 20 mph, Class 2 "may be used exclusively to propel the bicycle" up to 20 mph, and Class 3 assists while you pedal to 28 mph.
- Two wheels, each over 14 inches. The word "bicycle" carries its own definition: "two tandem wheels either of which is more than 14 inches in diameter" (§ 32-1-1.1(4)). An adult electric trike falls outside it, so a three-wheeler is no electric bicycle here; nor is a two-wheeler rated at exactly 750 watts, which misses the definition's line of less than 750. The law guide walks through what each of those becomes.
- Over the line, a motor-driven cycle. That category takes in "every bicycle with a motor attached" and says "The term does not include electric bicycles" (§ 32-1-1.1(37)). Riding one takes a Class M license or "a Class M motorcycle license with a motor-driven cycle restriction", issued from age 14 (§ 32-12-22), plus approved headgear and shoes (§ 32-5A-245).
- Read the label before you pay. Since January 1, 2022, "manufacturers and distributors" must fix a label showing "the classification number, top assisted speed, and motor wattage" (§ 32-5A-267(c)). Changing the speed or the motor's engagement without replacing that label is barred by subsection (d).
- How the motor must behave. The bike must meet the federal bicycle standard, "16 C.F.R. Part 1512" (§ 32-5A-267(e)), and its motor must stop "when the rider stops pedaling or when the brakes are applied" (subsection (f)).
- Class 3 carries three extra duties. Nobody under 16 may operate one, every operator and passenger wears a helmet, and the bike needs a speedometer that reads in miles per hour: subsections (i), (j) and (k) of § 32-5A-267.
- Helmets for every rider under 16, on any class. § 32-5A-283(1) makes it unlawful "For any person under the age of 16 years to operate or be a passenger on a bicycle" without one, on a "public roadway, public bicycle path, other public rights-of-way, state, city, or county public park"; subsection (a) of the e-bike section carries that duty to your e-bike.
- The road, the lane and the path. You "may be ridden in places where bicycles are allowed, including, but not limited to, streets, roadways, highways, shoulders, bicycle lanes, and bicycle or multi-use paths" (§ 32-5A-267(g)). Keep "as near to the right side of the roadway as practicable", ride no more than two abreast, and where "a usable path for bicycles has been provided adjacent to a roadway", use the path (§ 32-5A-263).
- Not on the sidewalk. "No person shall drive any vehicle upon a sidewalk" (§ 32-5A-52), and the definitions deem "a bicycle, an electric bicycle, or a ridden animal" a vehicle (§ 32-1-1.1(88)). Gulf Shores designates some of its sidewalks for e-bikes by ordinance (below); everywhere else, ride the street, the lane or the path.
- Who can close a path to you. After "notice and a public hearing", the county or city that runs a bicycle or multi-use path may bar Class 1 or 2 "if the entity finds that the prohibition is needed for safety reasons", and may bar Class 3 without that finding (§ 32-5A-267(h)(1)). The power stops at a trail "specifically designated as non-motorized" with a natural-surface tread (subsection (h)(2)): there, the trail's own manager decides.
One reading the Code leaves open. Subsection (f) asks the motor to stop "when the rider stops pedaling" (§ 32-5A-267(f)), while the Class 2 definition lets that motor "be used exclusively to propel the bicycle" (§ 32-1-1.1(16)). Read one way, a throttle-only ride is what Class 2 exists for; read the other, (f) wants the motor off whenever the pedals stop.
Both sentences came in with the same 2021 act, and the Code does not reconcile them. Either way the brakes limb holds, so a Class 2 whose motor cuts the moment you brake meets the part both readings share.
Where you can ride an Alabama e-bike, at a glance. Each row links its source.
| Where | An e-bike inside the definition | Over the line (a motor-driven cycle) |
|---|---|---|
| Streets, shoulders and bicycle lanes | Yes, with a bicycle's rights and duties | Yes, on a Class M license with headgear and shoes |
| Paved bicycle and multi-use paths | Yes, unless the path's city or county closed it after a public hearing | Not an e-bike, so the path's motor-vehicle rules apply |
| Natural-surface trails signed non-motorized | The trail manager decides; § 32-5A-267(h) does not reach them | The manager decides |
| Sidewalks | No, statewide, except where a city designates one | No |
| State parks | Only on trails designated for bicycles; never on a hiking trail, horse trail or beach unless "specifically permitted" | The same, and only licensed vehicles on park roads |
| National forests | A "motor vehicle" there: only on routes the forest's motor vehicle use map opens to motor vehicles | The same |
| Wildlife management areas | Class 1 or 2 only, to hunt, fish, trap or camp, on WMA roads open to motor vehicles; never past a locked gate | Unlicensed, barred from the listed WMAs; licensed, WMA roads open to motor vehicles, for the same purposes |
- State parks decide on designation. "Motor bikes, minibikes, motorcycles, motor scooters, go-carts, any other type motorized vehicle and bicycles shall not be driven in any areas or on any trails not designated for their use," and "No motorized vehicles of any kind or bicycles shall be allowed on horse trails, hiking trails or beach areas in any State Park, except where specifically permitted" (Ala. Admin. Code r. 220-5-.04(4)-(5), effective May 19, 1998). Breaking a park rule is a misdemeanor carrying "a fine of not more than $500.00 or imprisonment for not more than six months, or both" (§ 9-2-9(4)).
- National forests count every self-propelled machine. The Forest Service defines a motor vehicle as "Any vehicle which is self-propelled", with no exception for an electric bicycle (36 CFR § 212.1, current through October 19, 2026), and once a district has published its map it is "prohibited to possess or operate a motor vehicle" there "other than in accordance with those designations" (36 CFR § 261.13). Alabama's national forests are no exception: read the forest's map before you plan a trail.
- Wildlife management areas opened to Class 2 on October 15, 2026. The state's WMA rule now allows "Class 1 or 2 pedal-assisted e-bikes equipped with an electric motor less than 750 watts" when they are used "for the express purpose of hunting, fishing, trapping, camping, or related activities" and "only on regularly used roads depicted on WMA map to be open for motorized vehicle traffic" (Ala. Admin. Code r. 220-2-.55(1)(t), published August 31, 2026). Nobody may ride "any motor driven vehicle (including e-bikes) behind, under, or around any locked gate" (subsection (s)). The copy on Outdoor Alabama still prints the earlier text, which named Class 1 alone, so carry the rule's current wording if you hunt with a throttle.
Bottom line Choose a two-wheeled bike whose label shows less than 750 watts and a class you can read: Class 1 or 2 if a child under 16 will ride it or you want the fewest rules, Class 3 if you will commute at speed and wear a helmet on every ride. It rides the street, the lane and the path as a bicycle, needs no license, title, plate or insurance, and keeps you off the sidewalk.
Town rules that change the ride
A county or city may close a path it runs to e-bikes after a public hearing (§ 32-5A-267(h)(1)), and a city may set "a more comprehensive bicycle safety program than that imposed by this article by local ordinance" (§ 32-5A-286), so the rules can change at a city line. Each rule below was read in the city's own code or council record on October 21, 2026.
- Gulf Shores. Ordinance No. 2197, adopted January 26, 2026 and in force since March 1, sets "a maximum speed limit of ten (10) miles per hour" on the multi-use paths and sidewalks the council designates (Sec. 21-16(a)). It counts as unsafe riding the use of "a sidewalk that has not been designated by the City of Gulf Shores for use by both pedestrians and bicycles or regulated mobility devices" (Sec. 21-15(g)), and "A person under the age of 18 operating without a properly fitted and fastened helmet" (Sec. 21-15(n)). Fines start at "$250.00 for a first violation" and reach $500.00 for a third within a year (Sec. 21-17; council minutes, January 26, 2026). The city's E-Bike Safety page sums the rules up; its online code, current to May 1, 2026, does not yet carry them.
- Renting in Gulf Shores. Ordinance No. 2198, adopted the same night, says "No regulated mobility device except for a Class 1 electric bicycle shall be offered for rent" (Sec. 8-48(2)(a); council minutes, January 26, 2026). The renter must hand you a helmet, and a rider under 18 rents only if "a parent or legal guardian executes the rental agreement" (Sec. 8-48(2)(c)-(d)).
- Orange Beach. Since Ordinance No. 2026-1546 of September 1, 2026, bicycles and e-bikes are held to "15 miles per hour" on multi-use paths and "12 miles per hour" on the Backcountry Trail (§ 70-295(a)). Slow "to ten miles per hour or less when operating within 50 feet of any pedestrians" (subsection (b)(13)), and a rider under 16 wears a helmet ((b)(11)). What the city calls an electric motorcycle, "any motorcycle powered by an electric motor of 750 watts or more that is capable of a speed greater than 28 miles per hour" (§ 70-292), stays off sidewalks, paths, trails and bicycle lanes (§ 70-294(a)). A violation carries up to $500.00 and 30 days (§ 70-297(c)).
- Anniston. Motor vehicles are banned from the city's stretch of the Chief Ladiga Trail, and the city writes its motor-vehicle definition "excluding electric bicycles" of all three classes (§ 15.14, Ord. No. 25-O-5, June 17, 2025), so your e-bike may ride the trail.
- Fairhope. The council adopted Ordinance No. 1863, "Operation of Mobility Devices", on April 23, 2026 (city records). The city files it among its uncodified ordinances, and its online code runs to March 25, 2026, so ask city hall for the text before you ride downtown.
- Birmingham. "No person shall ride a bicycle or a shared micromobility device upon a sidewalk" (§ 10-20-4). The city's online code runs only to March 10, 2021, so ask the city about anything newer.
What breaking a rule costs
| The rule you break | What the law says it costs |
|---|---|
| A rule of the road in Chapter 5A, the sidewalk and Class 3 rules among them | a misdemeanor: "a fine of not more than $100.00 or by imprisonment for not more than 10 days" for a first conviction, up to "$500.00 or by imprisonment for not more than three months" for a third within a year (§ 32-5A-8(b)) |
| A rider under 16 without a helmet | counseling, then a warning, then the bike taken home with the child, then "a citation for fifty dollars ($50)" to the parent, waived on proof of a helmet (§ 32-5A-285) |
| A parent who lets a child break the rules | a parent "shall not authorize or knowingly permit any such child or ward to violate any of the provisions of this chapter" (§ 32-5A-266(b)) |
| A state park rule | "a fine of not more than $500.00 or imprisonment for not more than six months, or both" (§ 9-2-9(4)) |
Rebates and tax credits
Alabama gives you no tax credit for an e-bike. A search of the whole Code on ALISON, October 21, 2026, finds "electric bicycle" in five sections, every one in Title 32, Motor Vehicles and Traffic, and none in Title 40, Revenue and Taxation. Of the 3,279 bills and resolutions filed in the 2025 and 2026 sessions, none names a bicycle or an e-bike in its title or subject.
The last two e-bike bills, SB113 of 2022 and SB73 of 2023, dealt with age and helmet rules, passed the Senate and never came to a vote in the House.
In Alabama, the other place a rebate could come from is your electric utility. EIA Form 861 lists 62 electric distribution utilities serving Alabama in its 2025 and 2024 data; all 62 of their websites were read on October 21, 2026, thirty-six in full and twenty-six in part, where a site refused some of its pages, and none offers an e-bike rebate.
Two name the e-bike only to rule it out. Alabama Power's EV Night Charging Discount says "Electric scooters, electric bicycles, golf carts and motorized electric wheelchairs are not eligible", and Coosa Valley Electric Cooperative's $100 electric-vehicle rebate says "Motorcycles, e-bikes, golf carts, and utility terrain vehicles do not qualify" (its June 2, 2026 release).
TVA's EnergyRight program, which reaches north Alabama through its power companies, tells readers to "check for federal, state, or local rebates or incentives on e-bikes" (How to choose an electric bicycle) and offers none itself. A program can start without notice, so ask your utility before you buy.

Within each region, stores are grouped under the town on their mailing address. That is a post-office name, so a store grouped under one town may stand over a county line, and two of the 39 are on unincorporated land outside every city, town and census-designated place, each one placed by its own point with the Census geocoder.

If your city has none: the nearest verified store
One of Alabama's ten cities of 50,000 or more has no verified store inside its limits. Each distance below runs in a straight line from the Census Bureau's point for the city to the closest listed store, so expect the drive to be longer.
| City | People | Nearest verified store | Miles |
|---|---|---|---|
| Decatur | 58,056 | Bicycle Cove, Madison | 16.7 |
From Decatur, the closest listed store is Bicycle Cove, 16.7 miles away in a straight line (Census Gazetteer). Phone first: a store that sells e-bikes may not have your frame size or model on the floor the day you arrive.

Commuting in Birmingham, Huntsville or Montgomery? The commuter guide's 18 picks come with a section on hills, where torque counts for more than wattage, one on rain and winter riding, and one on a 30-mile round trip with groceries aboard, so the bike you try fits the trip you make each weekday.

Who sells electric bikes in Alabama?
The 39 storefronts in the listings above do, in 24 communities spread over 15 of Alabama's 67 counties; Jefferson County has the most, 8. Every listing closes with the check that showed the store sells e-bikes, and a dealer-map grade links to the maker's own locator, so you can see which brands a store is authorized to sell before you phone.
Where are the e-bike shops in Birmingham?
Three verified stores are inside the city of Birmingham: EBike Oasis on Montevallo Rd, REI Birmingham on Summit Blvd and Redemptive Cycles on 1st Ave N (Census geocoder). Outside the city, Jefferson County has five more, in Homewood (2), Hoover, Trussville and Vestavia Hills. Each store's street, phone and verifying check are in the Greater Birmingham listing below.
Where are the e-bike shops in Huntsville?
Four verified stores are inside the city of Huntsville: Bicycle Cove on US Highway 431 South, REI Huntsville on Mid City Dr NW, Rocket City eBikes on Howe Ave NE and Sunset Bicycles on Whitesburg Drive South (Census geocoder). Outside the city, Madison County has two more, in Madison and unincorporated Madison County. Each store's street, phone and verifying check are in the Top of Alabama listing below.
Where are the e-bike shops in Mobile?
Three verified stores are inside the city of Mobile: Adventure Earth on Airport Boulevard, Cadence 120 on Old Shell Rd and Infinity Bicycles on Hillcrest Road (Census geocoder). Each store's street, phone and verifying check are in the South Alabama listing below.
Are electric bikes street legal in Alabama?
Yes, when the bike fits § 32-1-1.1(16): "fully operable pedals, a saddle or seat for the rider, and an electric motor of less than 750 watts", built to Class 1, 2 or 3. It "may be ridden in places where bicycles are allowed", streets, shoulders, bike lanes and multi-use paths included (§ 32-5A-267(g)). At 750 watts or more it falls outside the definition and is a motor-driven cycle (§ 32-1-1.1(37)).
Do you need a license to ride an e-bike in Alabama?
No. An e-bike inside the definition "is not subject to the requirements of this title relating to driver’s licenses, registration, certificates of title" or "motor vehicle insurance" (§ 32-5A-267(b)). Only Class 3 has an age floor: no one under 16 may operate one (§ 32-5A-267(i)). A bike over the line is a motor-driven cycle, which takes a Class M license, issued from age 14 (§ 32-12-22(b)(1)).
Does Alabama have a helmet law for e-bikes?
Yes. Every rider and passenger under 16 wears one on any bicycle, an e-bike included, on public roads, paths and parks (§ 32-5A-283(1)), and "All operators and passengers of Class 3 electric bicycles" wear one at any age (§ 32-5A-267(j)). Gulf Shores raises the age to 18 (Ordinance No. 2197). A child's fourth offense costs the parent $50 (§ 32-5A-285).
Can you ride an e-bike on the sidewalk in Alabama?
No, as a rule. "No person shall drive any vehicle upon a sidewalk" (§ 32-5A-52), and an e-bike "shall be deemed a vehicle to the same extent as a bicycle" (§ 32-5A-267(a)). Birmingham's code keeps bicycles off its sidewalks too (§ 10-20-4). The exception is Gulf Shores, whose Ordinance No. 2197 opens the sidewalks it designates to e-bikes at up to 10 mph.
The Bottom Line
The 39 verified counters are spread over 15 of Alabama's 67 counties, and nine of its ten largest cities have one inside their limits. Greater Birmingham and South Alabama have ten each, and Alabama-Tombigbee and South Central Alabama have none. When your county has none, check the listings for the counties next to it before you buy a bike you have not ridden.
Bottom line Read the label before anything else: a motor of less than 750 watts and a class number you can name. Then find the nearest counter that stocks that bike. Inside Alabama's definition an e-bike needs no license, registration, title or insurance, and every e-bike we sell ships free to an Alabama address (shipping policy).
Choose a shop near you if the test ride matters to you, if you want a mechanic to set the brakes and fit the saddle to your leg before you roll out, and if you want a counter to return to when the first tune-up comes due.
Order online if no floor near you stocks the model you want. Read the maker's spec sheet first: Alabama's definition covers "an electric motor of less than 750 watts" (§ 32-1-1.1(16)), so a motor rated at 750 W exactly falls outside it, and a Class 3 bike is for riders 16 and older who wear a helmet (§ 32-5A-267).
Why order from us when no Alabama counter has the bike you want. We ship every e-bike we sell free within the contiguous United States, Alabama included. Orders are dispatched within 1 to 3 business days of confirmation, and most bikes arrive within 5 to 10 business days after dispatch (shipping policy). On October 23, 2026, you could pay at our checkout by card or with Google Pay.
Each bike is covered by its maker's warranty: if yours will not power on, will not charge or shows an error code, we coordinate the repair or replacement with you remotely (refund policy).
A carton that arrives damaged is our problem to chase: email photos within 48 hours of delivery, and we file the carrier claim and arrange a replacement or repair at no cost to you (refund policy). The company that sells to you is the one named in our terms of service, and support@redtailebikes.com answers questions on orders, shipping and warranty.
A long drive to the nearest counter, and long rides ahead? The long-range guide checks each of its 8 picks' range claims with watt-hours-per-mile arithmetic and lays four real trips over them, so the battery you buy covers the miles you plan.
See the long-range picksNot sure which bike fits your riding? Tell sales@redtailebikes.com where in Alabama you live and what you will ride, a commute, a beach path or a trail. Email usually gets an answer within one business day (contact page), and there is no charge for the advice.
When you collect the bike, read the label Alabama has required since January 1, 2022, the one showing "the classification number, top assisted speed, and motor wattage" (§ 32-5A-267(c)), and match all three to the model on your receipt.

How the count was reached
Every storefront counts once: 39 verified storefronts, each one listed above.
The candidate pool. OpenStreetMap held 32 entries tagged as bicycle shops inside Alabama, every one named and none a repeat, and 19 of them list a website. Seven makers' dealer locators added 52 storefront rows: the dealer maps of Bosch, Aventon, Giant, Trek, Specialized, Velotric and Lectric.
Two more makers' store finders were read whole for Alabama: QuietKat's lists sixteen locations in the state and Magnum's none. Lectric's six Alabama locations, every one tagged as a retail store, are among the dealer-map rows above, and SWFT, which sells through Best Buy, has no Alabama store page on its own site.
REI's own pages were read for both of its Alabama stores, Birmingham and Huntsville; one of them reached this list through no other source, and two REI stores are listed here.
| Where the Google Maps search ran | Places searched |
|---|---|
| Counties | all 67 |
| Cities and towns of 2,000 or more | 192 |
| Census-designated places of 2,000 or more | 33 |
| ZIP areas of Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery and Tuscaloosa | 97 |
| "Electric bike shop" searches, one per place above | 389 |
The Google Maps search asked first for bike shops and then for electric bike shops in each of those places: 778 searches, which with the follow-up reads they led to produced 61 candidates to check.
Every business the AI engines named in answering the 15 questions was checked against the sweep, and the six it lacked were looked up on Google Maps: two are stores listed here (Adventure Earth and VeloCity Cycles), one is marked permanently closed and three have no listing of their own (the search returned other businesses).
Reddit was searched as well, for the questions riders ask and the shops they name: 27 of 36 searches across twelve Alabama subreddits returned an answer, and the nine searches Reddit left unanswered, in r/Florence_AL, r/Huntsville and r/OrangeBeach, could not be read; the 65 replies under the 10 posts they found were read for shop names as well.
The test each store passed. The store's own website had to offer e-bikes for sale in its own words: a price, a category that lists an e-bike, or a sentence saying the shop sells them. An e-bike that appears only on a repair menu, a rental rate sheet, a raffle, a trail notice or a parts page does not count, and neither does a car or powersports dealer's e-bike page.
When a site would not load, it was opened again in a real browser, through a text reader and from an archived copy. Each candidate whose first read showed no e-bike for sale was then crawled page by page, so a shop that keeps its e-bikes deep in its own catalog still counts.
Every one of the twenty-one leads with no site of its own, or none that would load, was then searched for by name and checked again on Google Maps:
- One has closed, marked permanently closed on Google Maps.
- Nine are not bicycle stores (five motorcycle and powersports businesses and four businesses in other trades).
- One turns e-bikes away and sells none, in its own words.
- The other ten are still open leads.
A maker's dealer map is the other way onto this list: a store counts when the Bosch, Aventon and Velotric map places it at its address as an e-bike dealer.
Last came each store's own Google Maps listing: 35 of the 39 resolved to one business at the listed address that Google shows open; the other four appear on Google Maps with their hours and no closed notice (three on a results card and one on its own panel, whose street the listing prints), and a store Google marks closed, even for a while, is left off.
How to read the listings
The grade that ends each listing names what confirmed the store sells e-bikes.
Site checked applies to 15 of the 39: the shop's own website sells e-bikes.
Chain site checked applies to 15: one website serves several storefronts (for example Cahaba Cycles, EBike Oasis and Infinity Bicycles), so it proves the business sells e-bikes, and the listing tells you which branch you are visiting.
A maker's dealer map applies to 9: the maker lists the store as an authorized e-bike dealer, and the grade links to that maker's locator. Of those 9, 7 have a website that did not show e-bikes for sale in its own words (or could not be read) and 2 have no website of their own, so the maker's map is the evidence.

A listing shows a phone number when its sources agree or only one gives one; when a maker's roster and Google Maps disagree, the store's own site settles it, and when the site settles nothing the listing carries no number. Whatever the grade, call before you drive.
Why the map is thin where it is thin
OpenStreetMap carries 23 of the 39 storefronts on this page, so a directory drawn from that map alone would miss 16 of them. The makers' dealer maps, REI's store pages and the statewide Google Maps search each turned up stores the other sources lacked.
Google Maps and the shops' own sites settled which stores have closed: 3 storefronts still listed by a maker's roster or another source are closed permanently.
Limitations
- 48 candidates remain open leads, named in the research files and not counted: 35 with sites that name no e-bike for sale, 5 that could not be confirmed and 8 with no website of their own. Each deserves a phone call before you rule it out; none is a finding that the business does not sell e-bikes.
- Why 5 could not be confirmed: two whose own sites now show only placeholder pages; one whose own Facebook page offers e-bikes but which no source places at a street Google Maps confirms; and two whose store pages name no e-bike while the chain's online shop, which listed e-bikes when last archived, would not load.
- Named and not counted: 15 listings that are not a bicycle store (six motorcycle and powersports businesses, six businesses in other trades, two vehicle dealers and one free public bike repair stand), 3 closed storefronts, 5 businesses that rent bikes and sell no e-bike and 1 shop that declines e-bike work.
- County and city lines are the Census Bureau's. A store counts toward a county, or toward a city of 50,000 or more, only when its own point stands inside that boundary, so a store with a Birmingham, Huntsville or Mobile mailing address can stand in a neighboring city or on unincorporated county land. Populations are the Census Bureau's 2025 estimates (Vintage 2025).
- Local rules come from the town codes and council records we could read. A county or city may close the paths it runs to e-bikes (§ 32-5A-267(h)(1)), and Alabama has 463 cities and towns. On October 21 and 22, 2026, all 105 Alabama codes Municode publishes were searched for 23 e-bike phrases in their singular, plural and bare forms ("electric bicycle", "e-bikes", "electric-assist" and the rest), and each answered every search; the two Alabama codes on eCode360, Albertville's and Columbiana's, were searched the same way, and American Legal publishes no Alabama code. The twenty-three cities and towns of 5,000 or more whose code none of the three publishes could not be searched this way (Clay, Helena and Semmes are listed on Municode with no published code there). The codes of Anniston, Birmingham and Orange Beach carry the e-bike rules cited above; Gulf Shores' 2026 ordinances were read in its council minutes, and Fairhope's April 2026 ordinance is known from its records portal, whose text could not be retrieved.
- This is a floor, not a census. A shop on no maker's dealer map, missing from OpenStreetMap and from the chains' store pages, and absent from Google Maps would not be found here. A Maps search by name can also return a same-named shop in Georgia, Florida, Mississippi or Tennessee, so every address was checked for Alabama before a store was counted.
- Demand evidence. The questions this page answers come from 1,532 Google and Bing completions and related searches and 10 Alabama forum posts read on October 21 and 22, 2026, and from AI search engines' answers to 15 questions on October 21 and 22, 2026: Gemini and a web-search tool run in place of the engines that refused answered all 15.
- What could not be measured. Brave Search, ChatGPT, Copilot Search, Google AI Mode and Perplexity gave no usable answer: each met our headless browser with a bot check or an empty reply, and none was retried in a visible window. No search-volume figure is used: the paid keyword tool's account had no API units left on October 21, 2026, so no volume was measured, and an unmeasured volume is not a zero.
- What would age this page. It is due for re-checking in April 2027, and sooner if a listed shop closes or moves, if the Legislature amends the sections cited above, if the Department of Conservation changes rule 220-2-.55 or 220-5-.04, if a city or county adopts an e-bike ordinance, or when the Census Bureau publishes new local estimates.
- Distances are straight lines. The nearest-store table measures from each city's Census point to each store's coordinates; the road distance is longer.
