One practical warning before you go looking for them online. The domain this shop traded under, opentrailsebikes.com, no longer belongs to it. As of September 2026 it redirects to an Indonesian gambling site dressed up as a shoe-repair business in Beaumont.

Two further addresses that carried the name, opentrailsebikes.store and ebikesaltadena.com, no longer resolve at all. None of that says anything about the shop on 10th Street West, whose listing shows it trading as recently as August 2026. It does mean the phone number above is the reliable way to reach it.

It moved to 16th Street West on 1 June 2025, according to its own listing. Its site sells BMX and scooters online and uses no e-bike term anywhere. Treat it as a bicycle shop with two e-bike brand relationships rather than an electric specialist — a phone call rather than a drive if electric is what you want.

The address matters for more than bookkeeping. Put through the Census geocoder it matches exactly and falls in no incorporated place. An independent boundary test agrees: the point sits in Los Angeles County with no city above it.

The nearest point of the Palmdale city boundary is 374 meters away, a quarter of a mile, and the gap has a consequence you can feel. In unincorporated Los Angeles County, bicycles may be ridden on any sidewalk unless a sign says otherwise, and a quarter-mile away, inside Palmdale, that permission does not exist. The laws section explains why.

AVTA and Metrolink — eBikes on Buses and Trains

Palmdale is a commuter town, and both transit options publish an e-bike rule with a number in it — AVTA for the buses and Metrolink for the Antelope Valley Line. Read both before you choose a bike. Between them they rule out one very popular shape of electric bike.

Antelope Valley Transit Authority buses. Every AVTA bus carries a front rack, and the agency's published rule is generous about electric bikes and specific about what it will not take: "Only conventional single seat, two-wheeled bikes, and recumbent and electric bikes the size of a standard bicycle are allowed on AVTA buses."

The exclusions follow immediately — "Bicycles with oversized wheels, tandems and internal combustion engine-powered bicycles are not allowed." AVTA publishes no definition of "oversized wheels", so ask the driver before you commit to a rack.

Metrolink's Antelope Valley Line runs from the Palmdale Transportation Center into Los Angeles, and it is stricter. Its rule allows an electric bike with "pedals and a straddle seat" and "a manufacturer-installed sealed battery". It must "be powered off while onboard" and must "not be charged while onboard".

Then the dimensions: maximum size 32 inches wide by 58 inches long, and a maximum tire width of 2.6 inches, with a 600 lb ceiling for bike and occupant together. Modified batteries, swollen or taped packs, liquid lead-acid batteries and any bike missing manufacturer certification are refused.

Trail Access — Where Palmdale's Bike Paths Go

Search for Palmdale bike trails and you are mostly shown the San Gabriel Mountains and the Los Angeles basin — the Gabrielino Trail, the San Gabriel River Trail, Ballona Creek. None of those is in Palmdale. The City's own General Plan names the paths that actually exist here.

The City does not oversell this, and its own General Plan says in its own words that "formal bicycle and pedestrian trails are fairly limited within City limits". Its 2018 Draft Bicycle Transportation Plan prioritizes "over 173 new miles" of trails for biking, hiking and horseback riding, funding permitting.

The Sierra Highway Bike Trail is the one that changes what a bike is for. It is a Class I path running from the Lancaster Metrolink station to the Palmdale Transit Center: seven and a half protected miles between the Antelope Valley's two downtowns, and a genuine commute for a bike that holds 20 mph.

California eBike Laws in Palmdale

California does the heavy lifting here, and Palmdale has added nothing on top. An electric bicycle is capped at 750 watts and sorted into three classes. Class 1 is pedal-assist to 20 mph, Class 2 adds a throttle to 20 mph, and Class 3 is pedal-assist to 28 mph with a 16-and-over age floor and a helmet requirement. California's e-bike law page carries the statutory detail.

The Palmdale Municipal Code names electric bicycles nowhere. The code is current through 5 May 2026, and a term-by-term read of its bicycle, parks and traffic chapters returns zero hits for "electric bicycle", "e-bike", "motorized bicycle", "class 1", "class 2", "class 3" and six related phrases. The controls — "bicycle", "vehicle", "sidewalk", "park" — all return hits in the same pass, so that zero is the code's silence rather than a failed search.

Three provisions in the code still decide things, and every one of them is older than the class system.

The traffic code is a 1998 photograph. PMC § 10.04.010 does not write Palmdale's own traffic rules. It adopts someone else's: "Divisions 1 and 2 of Title 15, 'Vehicles and Traffic,' of the Los Angeles County Code, in effect on January 1, 1998, and as amended up to and including Los Angeles County Ordinance No. 97-0039". The adoption is frozen, not rolling.

The consequence is live today. In June 2023 Los Angeles County rewrote its sidewalk rules by Ordinance 2023-0030, adding § 15.76.082: "Bicycles may be ridden on any sidewalk except in locations where a sign is posted indicating that bicycle riding is prohibited thereon."

Every section creating that permission — 15.76.081, .082, .084 and .086 — carries 2023 as its only history. None of it is in the version Palmdale adopted, because Palmdale's snapshot was taken twenty-five years earlier. A rider crossing from the county island around 16th Street West into the city crosses between two different sidewalk regimes.

The parks rule turns on a definition written for a bicycle with no motor. PMC § 8.24.185(A) says a person "shall not skate, use, ride or otherwise operate a skateboard, roller skates, scooter, or a bicycle, as defined in PMC § 8.24.020 and 8.32.010, in any park". Subsection (C) allows a bicycle "in a park specifically designated and posted for that purpose by the Director", and subsection (D) makes a violation an infraction.

The definition it imports, at PMC § 8.32.010(A), reads: "'Bicycle' means and includes any device upon which a person may ride, which is propelled by human power through a system of belts, chains, or gears". An electric bicycle is not propelled by human power alone.

So on the face of it, the parks bicycle rule and its designated-and-posted escape hatch were not written for one. The other definition § 8.24.185 imports, at PMC § 8.24.020(E), covers "any multiwheeled, treaded, or sled-type vehicle that is propelled by a motor or engine".

And § 8.24.180 says a person "shall not bring to, or operate in, any park any motor vehicle except at such times and at such places as permitted by the Director in written regulations or permits". Read that way, an e-bike in a Palmdale park needs the Director's written permission rather than a posted bike route.

No City reading of how those two sections meet has been published, and both readings are available on the text. Treat a Palmdale park as closed to an e-bike unless it is signed otherwise, and ask the Parks Department if it matters to your route.

What is not an e-bike, and why it matters here. Two of Palmdale's bicycle-shop listings are not bicycle shops at all: one is an off-road motorcycle tour operator, the other sells motorcycle gear. The distinction is a legal one and it decides what you may ride.

An electric bicycle under California law has working pedals and a motor of 750 watts or less. A machine with no pedals, or with more power, is a moped or a motorcycle: it needs registration, a license and a plate, and § 21207.5(a) keeps it off the bike paths in the table above.

If you are shopping for something that looks like a dirt bike, read the electric moped guide first, because the paperwork is different. The pedal-assist versus throttle guide settles the other question buyers get wrong.

On the Class I paths, state law is permissive. Vehicle Code § 21207.5, as amended by AB 1909 with effect from 1 January 2023, bars a "motorized bicycle" from a bike path but no longer bars any class of electric bicycle from one.

Subdivision (b) lets a local authority prohibit an electric bicycle "on an equestrian trail, or hiking or recreational trail" by ordinance. Palmdale has passed no such ordinance. All three classes are therefore lawful on the Avenue S and Sierra Highway bike paths today.

Where to Ride Your eBike in Palmdale

For a new Palmdale rider: the roads are wide and fast, the two Class I paths are the good news, and the parks are the question mark.

Start with the Sierra Highway Bike Trail if you are commuting. Protected, nearly 7.5 miles, and it links the valley's two Metrolink-served downtowns. You can ride one direction and take the train the other, provided your bike clears Metrolink's 2.6-inch tire limit.

Use the Avenue S Bike Trail for east–west distance. Roughly 4.7 miles of Class I path along Avenue S between SR-14 and 45th Street East, with some gaps to plan around — the City's General Plan names them. For a bike that has to survive that ride twice a day, the commuter guide is the right list.

Treat parks as signed-access only. Marie Kerr Park, Pelona Vista Park, Domenic Massari Park and McAdam Park, all listed by the City, have paths.
