How we verified this directory — Milad Ghobadibeygvand, BScN

We set the denominator before counting anything: Colorado's 19 cities and towns of 50,000 or more in the Census Bureau's 2024 estimates. Candidates came from OpenStreetMap, seven makers' dealer locators and the Colorado Energy Office's list of retailers taking the state credit, 392 storefronts once merged. Every shop's own website was read for e-bikes, 289 Google Maps listings for closures, and rental-only, repair-only and closed businesses were left out.

Verified October 9, 2026; due again April 2027.

Quick Answer

There are 183 verified e-bike shops in Colorado as of October 9, 2026: 176 listed on this page across 68 communities in 30 counties, and 7 more on the Denver page. The Front Range holds 105 of the 176. Centennial and Commerce City have none inside their city lines.

A Class 1, 2 or 3 e-bike with a motor of 750 W or less needs no state license or registration (C.R.S. § 42-1-102), though your city or county may require its own; no one under 16 may ride a Class 3, and at a participating shop you get $225 off one e-bike a year. The Colorado e-bike law guide covers the city and county rules.

Colorado's e-bike counters cluster where its people do. The Front Range, from Fort Collins down to Pueblo, holds 105 of the 176 stores listed here, and the rest follow the ski and river towns over the Divide: Avon has seven, Steamboat Springs four, Durango four.

That pattern makes the mailing address the useful search key. Most of the stores below sit outside Colorado's cities of 50,000 or more, so this page lists every store under the community on its own address, region by region, with the street, phone and the date it was checked.

The cover shows Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, which the National Park Service registers as a National Natural Landmark and describes as "an outstanding illustration of the lithologic character of sedimentary rocks, and of the vertical forces that produced the front range of the Rocky Mountains" (NPS).

The park has belonged to the city since 1909, given on the condition that it "shall remain free to the public" (Garden of the Gods Visitor & Nature Center), and its visitor center invites you to "Hike, bike, climb, ride, or roll through the Park!"

Colorado's eBike Map, City by City

Each Colorado city and town of 50,000 or more residents in the Census Bureau's 2024 estimates is a row below, with the verified storefronts inside its line and the candidates still open. Denver is counted from its own page.

Look for your city in the first column. A dash under Verified stores means none sits inside the city line, and the nearest verified store is measured further down.

Seventeen of the 19 cities and towns carry at least one verified store. Centennial and Commerce City carry none; Centennial's nearest is 1.2 miles from the city's Census point, and Commerce City's is 9.8.

The table covers only a slice of the state, because it stops at the Census Bureau's 50,000 line. Of the 176 storefronts listed on this page, 68 sit inside one of the table's cities and towns and 108 sit outside them, in places such as Golden, Avon, Durango, Salida and Steamboat Springs or in unincorporated suburbs such as Highlands Ranch.

Boulder shows how far a city can outrun its size. With 106,803 residents it carries 13 verified stores inside its line, more than Aurora, Lakewood and Thornton together, cities with more than six times its population between them.

Bottom line Search by the town on your mailing address. In Colorado the nearest counter is often in a mountain town or a Front Range suburb outside the table, and every listing gives a ZIP code you can type into a map.

Colorado eBike Law — 2026 Quick Reference

Colorado writes its e-bike rules into the motor vehicle title, and a few of them bind the shop that sells you the bike. Each rule below quotes Title 42 of the Colorado Revised Statutes as the Office of Legislative Legal Services publishes it for 2026, read on October 6, 2026.

  • What counts as an e-bike. A vehicle with "two or three wheels, fully operable pedals, and an electric motor not exceeding seven hundred fifty watts of power" (§ 42-1-102(28.5)). A 750 W motor is inside the line, because the statute says not exceeding.
  • Three classes. Class 1 helps only while you pedal and Class 2 can run without pedaling, both stopping at 20 mph; Class 3 assists "only when the rider is pedaling" and stops at "twenty-eight miles per hour" (§ 42-1-102(28.5)). A bike built to be "easily configured" past those limits is not an e-bike at all.
  • No state license or registration. Colorado's definition of a motor vehicle "does not include electrical assisted bicycles" (§ 42-1-102(58)), so the state's licensing and registration rules for motor vehicles do not reach your e-bike. A city or county may still require its own registration, license and fee (§ 42-4-111(1)(h)).
  • Paths are open to Class 1 and 2. You "may ride a class 1 or class 2 electrical assisted bicycle on a bike or pedestrian path where bicycles are authorized to travel," but a local authority may prohibit them on its paths (§ 42-4-1412(14)(a)).
  • Class 3 stays on the street side. A Class 3 may use a path only if "The path is within a street or highway" or the local authority permits it (§ 42-4-1412(14)(b)).
  • Sixteen for Class 3, and helmets under 18. "A person under sixteen years of age shall not ride a class 3 electrical assisted bicycle," though a child may ride as a passenger on one built for passengers, and everyone under 18 on a Class 3 must wear a bicycle helmet (§ 42-4-1412(15)).
  • What breaking a riding rule costs you. Every rule in § 42-4-1412, from the Class 3 age line to the helmet rule and the path limits, carries one consequence: a rider who breaks it commits "a class 2 misdemeanor traffic offense" (§ 42-4-1412(12)(a)). The penalty-assessment schedule sets it at a $15 fine plus a $6 surcharge (§ 42-4-1701), and an equipment violation under § 42-4-221, such as riding between sunset and sunrise without a white front lamp, carries the same $15 fine.
  • State parks follow the bike-trail rule. Colorado Parks and Wildlife lets "Class 1 and 2 e-bikes" on roadways, bike lanes and multi-use trails open to non-motorized biking, and needs no permit; in state wildlife areas and on state trust lands they keep to designated roads and parking areas (CPW).

What the law asks of the shop

Since January 1, 2018, the maker or distributor of every new e-bike sold in Colorado has had to fix a label in a prominent spot showing "the classification number, top assisted speed, and motor wattage" (§ 42-4-221(9)(a)). From January 1, 2027, a bike that switches between classes must also list "the highest class or each of the classes" it can run in.

A 2025 law, HB25-1197, added three duties at the counter, effective August 6, 2025. The seller must tell you the motor's watts, the top speed and the class, and for a Class 3 give you a statement that riding one under 16 is unlawful (§ 42-4-221(13)).

The battery has to be certified by an accredited laboratory to a standard referenced in UL 2849 or EN 15194, or another the state's fire prevention division approves, with the mark shown on the bike, the battery or its paperwork (§ 42-4-221(14)). A store that sells a faster machine as an e-bike without the statute's warning that it is "a type of motor vehicle" commits a deceptive trade practice (§ 42-4-221(12)).

The $225 credit and the income-qualified rebate

Colorado discounts e-bikes at the register. "Coloradans can get $225 off a qualified e-bike purchase at a participating retailer (limited to one discount per calendar year)," according to the Colorado Energy Office, and the shop recovers it as a state tax credit. You pay sales tax on the full price, and you need proof of a physical Colorado address.

The Department of Revenue runs the credit for income tax years before January 1, 2033. Of the 176 storefronts listed on this page, 118 appear on the state's participating-retailer list, which the Energy Office calls "self-reported" and "not comprehensive", so confirm at the counter before you buy.

The second program pays more and is harder to get. The statewide e-bike rebate is for income-qualified residents chosen at random from a registration window: $1,000 off, plus $300 for an e-cargo bike or an adaptive e-bike, spent at a participating retailer within sixty days. You may combine it with the $225 credit where the store takes both.

Before you pay, read three things. Find the class label on the frame, the laboratory mark on the battery, and the participating-retailer sign if you are claiming the $225. The Colorado e-bike law guide maps the city and county rules, and the 50-state law table sets Colorado's 750 W wording beside every other state's.

Choosing between Class 1, 2 and 3? The buying guide explains what each class does, what a good bike costs and how battery certification works, so you walk in knowing what to ask. Every bike it recommends ships free within the contiguous United States.

If your town has none: the nearest verified store

Two of the 19 cities and towns checked have no verified e-bike store inside their own line. If you live in one of them, the table gives you the nearest one, measured in a straight line from the Census Bureau's 2024 Gazetteer point for the city, so expect your drive to run longer.

Your city Nearest verified store Distance
Centennial REI Greenwood Village 1.2 mi
Commerce City Hardt Family Cyclery, Aurora 9.8 mi

Centennial's gap is small. REI Greenwood Village is 1.2 miles from the city's Census point, Epic Mountain Gear in Lone Tree 2.4 and Adventure Cycling 3.7. Commerce City is the real distance, almost ten miles from its Census point to the nearest verified counter.

Horizontal bar chart of straight-line miles to the nearest verified e-bike store from the two cities with no store inside their line: Commerce City 9.8, Centennial 1.2

Centennial's nearest store is 1.2 miles away, in Greenwood Village; Commerce City's is 9.8, in Aurora.

Ten miles from the closest counter? Weigh a delivered bike against the drive. The commuter guide sorts its picks by the ride to work, from budget bikes to cargo, and checks every one against the 750-watt line. Each of them ships free within the contiguous United States.

See the commuter picks

Buying online vs buying in a Colorado shop

A Colorado shop earns its margin three ways: a test ride on a real hill, an assembly done for you, and a mechanic nearby when the brakes need bleeding after a mountain descent. If those matter to you, the drive pays, and the listings above save you a wasted trip.

The counter is also where the seller's duties under § 42-4-221 come due: the class, wattage and top speed disclosed, the class label on the frame, and the battery's laboratory mark. Ask for all three, wherever you buy.

Buying online gives you choice and terms you can read before you commit. Return windows, warranty length and freight differ from seller to seller, so read them before you compare prices. Redtail's commuter and city e-bikes and the full range ship free within the contiguous United States, so if your nearest floor is a mountain pass away, you can compare the terms first.

Why buy from Redtail when no shop is close? Every bike ships free within the contiguous United States, you get US support by email before and after you buy, and at checkout you can pay by card, PayPal or Shop Pay, which offers installments on eligible orders.

If you will ride through a Colorado winter, settle that before you choose. The winter e-bike guide groups its fourteen picks by the winter you ride and works out the miles each battery gives at each temperature.

Commuting through snow season? The winter guide picks bikes for plowed-road commutes, for snow and ice, and for deep snow on private land, with its own state-by-state winter numbers. Every bike in it ships free within the contiguous United States.

Bottom line Seventeen of Colorado's 19 cities and towns of 50,000 or more carry a verified store, and 108 of the 176 listed here sit outside them. Each entry gives the address, the phone and the date of the check, so call ahead before crossing a pass.

Frequently Asked Questions — Colorado eBike Shops

Where can you buy an e-bike in Colorado?

You can buy one at any of 183 verified storefronts as of October 9, 2026: the 176 listed on this page and the stores on the Denver page. The Front Range holds 105 of the 176, and the rest sit in mountain and Western Slope towns, so look up the community on your own mailing address.

Yes. C.R.S. § 42-1-102(28.5) recognizes three classes with fully operable pedals and a motor of 750 W or less. You may ride a Class 1 or 2 on streets and on bike paths where bicycles may go unless your local authority says otherwise, and a Class 3 at 16 or older, kept to paths within a street unless the local authority permits more (§ 42-4-1412).

Where are e-bikes not allowed in Colorado?

You may not take a Class 3 onto a bike or pedestrian path outside a street or highway unless your local authority permits it, and your local authority may ban Class 1 and 2 from its own paths (§ 42-4-1412(14)). On state lands, Colorado Parks and Wildlife keeps e-bikes to designated roads, camping and parking areas in state wildlife areas and on state trust lands, and tells you to ask each federal land agency.

Are e-bikes allowed in Colorado state parks?

Yes, Class 1 and 2. Colorado Parks and Wildlife allows them on roadways, designated bike lanes, and multi-use trails and other areas open to non-motorized biking, and you need no registration or permit. State wildlife areas and state trust lands are stricter, so check the area before you ride.

How does the Colorado e-bike tax credit work?

You get $225 off one qualified e-bike per calendar year at the register of a participating retailer, and the retailer claims the money back as a $250 state tax credit (Colorado Energy Office). You pay sales tax on the full price and show proof of a physical Colorado address. Ask the shop whether it takes the discount before you buy.

How long will the Colorado tax credit last?

The Department of Revenue allows the credit for income tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2024, and before January 1, 2033. The Colorado Energy Office lists the discount at $225 per e-bike as of October 2026, so check the amount when you buy.

Which stores take the Colorado e-bike rebate?

You can use it only at stores on the state's participating-retailer list, which the Colorado Energy Office links from its rebate page and which grows as stores join. Of the 176 storefronts listed here, 118 appear on the participating list for the $225 credit; the Energy Office calls that list "self-reported", so confirm with the store before you count on either discount.

Does REI sell electric bikes in Colorado?

Yes, at the seven REI stores listed on this page: Boulder, Colorado Springs, Dillon, Fort Collins, Grand Junction, Greenwood Village and Lakewood. Each appears on Bosch's dealer map as a Bosch eBike dealer, and the listing links to that page. Call the store before you make a long drive, to check what is on the floor. REI's Denver flagship on Platte Street is on Bosch's dealer map too.

REI also runs stores in Durango, Glenwood Springs and Loveland. Their bike-shop pages offer e-bike tune-ups and repairs, but none of the three is on a maker's dealer map or says it sells e-bikes, so none is counted here.

Where are the e-bike shops in Boulder and Colorado Springs?

Boulder and Colorado Springs carry 13 verified stores each inside their city lines, the most of any community on this page. Both cities' stores are listed above under the Front Range, each with its address, phone and the date of its check, so you can call ahead before you go.

The Bottom Line

Colorado's e-bike shops follow its Front Range and its ski towns. Seventeen of the 19 cities and towns of 50,000 or more carry a verified store, and 108 of the 176 listed on this page sit outside them, from Golden to Steamboat Springs.

Go local if a test ride on a real climb, a proper assembly and a mechanic close to home matter to you, or if you want the $225 credit, which the state pays through participating retailers. Centennial's nearest store is 1.2 miles from its Census point.

Buy online if the nearest counter is a long drive, as it is from Commerce City, or the model you want is not stocked near you. Put the return window and the warranty side by side before you look at price. When you are ready to compare, the buying guide walks you through classes, cost and battery certification first.

Either way, read the class label and the battery mark required by § 42-4-221 before you pay, let no one under 16 ride a Class 3 except as a passenger on one built to carry passengers, and put a helmet on every rider under 18 who climbs on one.

Sources, limitations and how this page was verified

How the count was reached

One number per city, and every storefront once. Denver is counted from its own page, which lists 9. Two of those nine stand outside Denver's line, Wheat Ridge Cyclery's store in Wheat Ridge and Boost eBikes in Littleton, and this page lists both, so each is counted once: 183 verified storefronts statewide, 176 of them listed on this page.

The candidate pool was 198 bicycle shops mapped in OpenStreetMap, 118 of them with a website; 254 storefront rows from seven makers' dealer locators: Bosch, Specialized, Trek, Aventon, Giant, Velotric and Pedego; and the 172 rows of the Colorado Energy Office's participating-retailer list, 165 of them with a street address. Merged, they made 392 storefronts statewide, 351 of them outside Denver.

How to read the listings

Each listing ends with one of three evidence grades, which tell you how the store was checked.

Site checked covers 96 of the 176: the shop's own website, read in October 2026, names e-bikes in its own words.

Chain site checked covers 26: one website serves several storefronts, so it proves the business sells e-bikes and the listing shows where the branch is. Epic Mountain Gear has five such storefronts here, Cripple Creek Bike and Backcountry four, and Mike's Bikes and Wheat Ridge Cyclery three each.

A maker's dealer map covers 54: the maker itself tags the store as an e-bike seller. Each grade links to that maker's dealer locator, or for Bosch and Pedego to the store's own page there. The shop's own site was read too, and either did not say it sells e-bikes, could not be read or was not found.

Bar chart of how the 176 listings were verified: site checked 96, chain site checked 26, a maker's dealer map 54

One grade per listing, printed at the end of every entry.

Phone numbers come from the shop's sources and Google Maps. Where they disagreed, the number on the shop's own website is printed, and where the site prints neither, no number is printed. Whatever the grade, call before you drive far.

Why the map is thin where it is thin

OpenStreetMap carries 78 of the 176 storefronts listed here. The state's participating-retailer list carries 118 of them, and the makers' locators fill the rest: 54 of the 176 rest on a maker's dealer map rather than on a page of their own that names e-bikes.

Google Maps did the opposite job, closing what the lists still carried. It marked 17 storefronts as permanently closed, among them Cassiopeia in Boulder, Planet Cyclery in Broomfield and Treads Bicycle Outfitters, and 6 as temporarily closed, including Wheelies and Waves in Gunnison. One more closure came from a shop's own words: GoodTurn Cycles in Littleton, whose own site, as archived in June 2024, says it closed on October 31, 2023. None of those is counted.

Reading the shops' own sites did the rest. Nine businesses on the lists turned out to rent e-bikes without selling them, from Glenwood Canyon Bikes to Palisade Cycle, and nine more tagged as dealers on a maker's map offer e-bikes on their own sites only as rentals or tours.

Bottom line A dealer roster alone would list closed and rental-only businesses, and the open map alone would miss 98 of the 176 stores listed here. This page needed all three lists, Google Maps and a reading of every shop's own site.

Limitations

  1. Denver's count is its page's count. The Denver page lists the nine storefronts it verified in its own build. This statewide sweep found more candidates inside the city; they are not listed here, because the city's own page is the place that counts them.
  2. 104 candidates outside Denver remain unresolved. Sixty-two load and never mention e-bikes for sale, 37 publish no working website, and 5 could not be read: three whose only website is a Facebook page that does not open past its login prompt (Days Roll By in Loveland, Ride Co Bike Shop in Colorado Springs and Naked Bike Works & Suspension in Grand Junction), and Generic Racer in Aurora and Gangl Custom Cycles in Golden, on Bosch's dealer map but with no business at their addresses on Google Maps and no website of theirs to read. None is counted as an absence; each is a lead for a phone call.
  3. Named and not counted: 18 permanently and 6 temporarily closed storefronts, 6 that moved, 14 duplicate entries, 9 rental-only businesses, 5 businesses with no bicycle storefront (four motorcycle or car dealerships and one e-bike business that delivers and publishes no shop address), and 4 listings with no storefront found.
  4. Nine conflicts are held out. Each is tagged as an e-bike dealer on a maker's map, while its own site offers e-bikes only as rentals or tours, among them Epic Mountain Sports in Winter Park, Carvers Ski and Bike in Breckenridge and Ride Aspen. None is counted until it says it sells.
  5. Distances are straight-line from the Census Bureau's 2024 Gazetteer point for each city, never driving distance.
  6. Nineteen listings take their street from a second source, because the map or roster entry carried none. Fourteen come from the Google Maps listing matched to the store by phone; Sports Garage in Boulder and Commencal USA in Golden come from their own websites; and three come from a maker's roster.
  7. Demand evidence. The questions this page answers come from Google and Bing autocomplete and related searches, the headings of directory pages that compete for Colorado shop searches, and 38 answers from three AI engines, read logged out and saved raw. Google's AI Mode answered with a traffic check and could not be read.
  8. No search-volume figure appears on this page. No keyword pricing was run for this topic.
  9. The cover is a generated scene. Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak were checked against public-domain photographs before generation; see the image credit below.
  10. The publisher sells electric bikes. Redtail sells online and has no commercial relationship with any shop listed. The listings carry no ranking, no sponsored placement and no preference for brands Redtail stocks.

When this page expires. It is re-checked when any of these happen: a listed shop closes, moves or stops selling e-bikes; the General Assembly amends C.R.S. § 42-1-102, § 42-4-221 or § 42-4-1412; the state changes the credit amount or the rebate rules; the Denver page changes its count; or the Census Bureau publishes a new vintage of estimates. If you spot one of those first, email sales@redtailebikes.com.
