Miami-Dade Transit — eBikes on Metrobus, Metrorail and Metromover

Miami-Dade County's Department of Transportation and Public Works publishes its own e-bike rule on its Bike & Ride on Transit page, read on September 4, 2026. It is permissive, with four conditions.

The department writes that electric bicycles "may be carried/walked onto DTPW property and DTPW vehicles including Metrorail, Metromover, and Metrobus, provided that the following parameters are met" (DTPW).

Those parameters are that "Motorized e-bikes may only be battery-powered", that they "must be switched 'off' while on-board transit vehicles within stations or bus terminals", and that "commercial motorized e-bikes (those which are rented and not personally owned) are prohibited from all transit vehicles." A rented bike does not travel on the system.

The bus rule is the one that decides a purchase. DTPW states that "E-bikes cannot exceed 75 lbs. and must be safely stowed at all times on the bus exterior bike racks while on Metrobus", and adds that "the exterior bike racks may not be able to safely accommodate all styles of e-bikes (i.e., small, oversized or 'fat' tire e-bikes)". A fat-tire bike can be under the weight limit and still not fit the rack.

On rail there is no weight figure. The same page says e-bikes "shall be safely stowed at all times while on Metromover and in the designated bicycle area while on Metrorail", and must not block aisles or doors or occupy seating. A folding e-bike may come aboard a Metrobus folded if it does the same.

Fuel-powered bikes and scooters "are NOT permitted on any DTPW vehicles" at all, and failure to follow the parameters "may result in a prohibition of transit services" (DTPW).

Trail Access — The Underline, the Commodore Trail and the Causeways

The riding case for an electric bike in Miami is the waterfront geography. The Rickenbacker Causeway climb toward Key Biscayne is the closest thing to a hill in the county, the Venetian Causeway hops islands at low speed, the Commodore Trail runs through Coconut Grove toward Coral Gables, and The Underline follows the Metrorail guideway on the ground.

The trap is that the best-known destinations are the most restricted ground in the metro. Two closures matter before the first weekend ride, and both cover exactly the journey a new owner plans.

Miami Beach closed the Baywalk and seven named Beachwalk segments to motorized devices, recorded in the city commission record. Buying at the 5th Street shop and riding the Beachwalk home is the exact trip the closure covers.

Key Biscayne goes further. The village's own police page states that "motorized scooters and electric bicycles are NOT ALLOWED to be ridden in any park, including the Village Green walking path and central promenade", with helmets required under 16 (keybiscayne.fl.gov). The island has been the strictest ground in the county since a fatal 2024 crash, and the Florida e-bike laws guide tracks how far the restrictions have traveled since.

Two more beach towns have since drawn their own lines. Bal Harbour adopted Ordinance 2026-0670, which bars electric mobility devices from the beach path hard pack, the jetty and cut walk, and the 102nd Street beach access path at "$50 per violation" (village announcement).

Sunny Isles Beach adopted a motorized-scooter ordinance requiring riders to be 16 or older with government identification, at "$250 for a first offense and $500 for all subsequent violations" (city announcement). That one is written around scooters, and whether its device definitions reach a throttle e-bike is a question for the city's own regulations page.

Florida eBike Laws — What Makes an eBike Legal in Miami

State law defines the bike and takes the paperwork away. The municipalities decide where it may go. Both halves are short, and only the second one changes often.

The state definition

Under Fla. Stat. § 316.003(23), an electric bicycle has operable pedals, a saddle and "an electric motor of less than 750 watts", in one of three classes. Under § 316.20655(2), an e-bike and its rider are "not subject to the provisions of law relating to financial responsibility, driver or motor vehicle licenses, vehicle registration, title certificates, off-highway motorcycles, or off-highway vehicles."

Class, top assisted speed and motor wattage belong on a label on the frame under § 316.20655(3). There is no statewide age minimum: § 316.20655(8) hands that power to local governments, which is why the beach towns above set their own.

What changed, 2024 to 2026

The pattern worth naming is that Miami's new rules keep coming from the small beach municipalities rather than from the City of Miami. The city where most buyers live has stayed close to the state defaults. The islands where they ride on weekends have not.

What is not an e-bike here

Miami shoppers search for an electric dirt bike store almost as often as for an e-bike shop, and several storefronts in this metro sell both. The line is not branding, it is § 316.003(23): operable pedals, a saddle, and a motor under 750 watts.

A Sur-Ron-style machine, a throttle-only bike with no working pedals, or anything above the wattage line is outside that definition entirely, and the paperwork-free treatment does not follow it home.

Such a machine falls into motor-vehicle territory, and none of the path and park rules above give it anywhere legal to ride here. If a seller calls a 1,500-watt machine street legal, the statute is the answer. The motor guide explains where the line sits mechanically.

Where to Ride Your eBike in Miami

Heat is the real constraint here, and range rarely is. Summer riding is a dawn-and-dusk sport, and trips are short and flat enough that almost any battery covers a Brickell to Beach round trip several times over. Where the battery sleeps matters more: an enclosed garage spends August far above most manuals' storage temperatures, so read yours and prefer conditioned space.

Salt is the second. A bike parked near the water corrodes faster than anywhere inland. Rinse and dry after bayfront rides, and put the drivetrain in front of a bench each season. Cycle World and Mack Cycle both run standing ones.

Theft is the third, and it belongs at the counter. Ask what lock the shop's own customers buy: the honest answer differs between a Brickell tower with a bike room and a duplex with street parking.

Before you drive across town

Two floors sit inside the city and nine a causeway or corridor away, so one trip rarely covers the metro. Five questions make each count.

1. What is the motor's rated wattage, in writing? Under 750 with working pedals keeps the bike inside the state definition and out of motor-vehicle territory.
2. How does it brake from 20 mph? Flat city, fast traffic and frequent rain make braking the whole safety story here.
3. What does it weigh, and what tire? Metrobus stops at 75 pounds and the county warns that fat tires may not fit the rack.
4. Is the battery certified? UL 2849 or EN 15194 on the system. Mack Cycle leads with UL on its own page, and that is the standard to hold every seller to.

Green flags at a Miami counter: a written wattage and class answer, a battery certification answer, a named human who handles warranty work, and a straight answer about the Beachwalk and Key Biscayne. How the count was built

The Florida statewide sweep built its candidate list from search discovery across 63 cities. The Miami-area candidates were then read one at a time on their own websites or their own brand's dealer pages on August 25, 2026.

Eleven storefronts cleared, and they split at the city line: two inside Miami, which is the figure this page publishes, and nine across eight neighboring municipalities, listed under Just Outside Miami and counted separately. A twelfth Miami business, a repair-only workshop, is named below rather than counted, because the count is of places that sell.

Limitations

1. Shop details reflect August 25, 2026 only, read on each business's own site or its brand's dealer page. The Miami-Dade Transit rules were read on September 4, 2026. Hours, stock and ownership change faster than this page does.
2. This page counted the metro before it counted the city. Until September 6, 2026 the title read 11, which is the metro figure; two of those eleven sit inside the Miami city line. The title, stat block and cover now state the in-city figure, and the nine across the line stay listed under Just Outside Miami.
3. Two inside the line and nine outside it are verified counts, not a census. Seven more area businesses are named above as could-not-look: their own pages were not read, which is not the same as their being absent or closed.
