• You agree to charge during off-peak hours, which the application form defines as 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
• You may claim it twice in any 12-month period.

The sentence that matters most

Buried in the general requirements is this: "The City does not endorse any product, service, individual, or company. Selection of a vendor is at the sole decision of the Program participant."

In plain terms, Denton does not restrict you to a list of approved shops. Buy from Denton Bicycle Center, buy from Velo Republic, buy from Wicked Thumb, or buy online — what the city wants is an itemized invoice, the class, the wattage and the serial number, all of which any legitimate seller can give you.

Two honest cautions. First, the manual says the program runs each fiscal year from October 1 "until the allotted funding is depleted," and that once funds run out no further applications are accepted until the next fiscal year. Check the city's incentives page for current status before you count on it. Second, that 90-day clock starts at purchase rather than delivery, so file early.

Denton Bicycle Center — since 1971

1700 N. Elm St., (940) 387-9314. Electra lists it as a Preferred Retailer with Townie Go! and Ponto Go! — Electra's electric models — among its offerings, so the e-bike claim comes from the manufacturer. Hours are Monday to Friday 9–6, Saturday 9–4, closed Sunday.

Its own site is refreshingly plain: repairs, new and used bikes, custom builds, carrying Trek, Electra, Fit, Sunday and Sun, and a note that its old BikeExchange inventory feed has ended so you should call or come by to see what is in the building. Fifty-five years in one town is its own kind of credential.

Velo Republic — and the domain that isn't theirs

219 Fort Worth Dr. Its site carries an Electric > Electric Bikes category alongside road, mountain, cyclocross, commuter, comfort, cruiser, fitness, hybrid, children's and BMX, plus parts and service. Hours are Tuesday to Saturday 10–6, closed Sunday and Monday.

Note the address of the address. The shop is at velorepublicbikes.com. The obvious domain, velorepublic.com, is a GoDaddy parked page — and it is where our own first probe went. That is the second Texas city in two days where a real shop lives one word away from the domain everyone tries, and we mention it because we made the mistake before we caught it.

The search box does not help either. Probed live, the root velo republic returns velo czech republic, velo dominican republic and velo snus czech republic. A working Denton bike shop is competing with two countries and a nicotine pouch.

The e-bike factory on Market Street

Wicked Thumb ElectroCycles, 3839 Market Street Ste 103, Denton, TX 76209, 888-531-9311. This one is not a dealer. It is a manufacturer — custom electric bikes, chopper e-bikes, sidecar e-bikes and electric trikes, 26-inch and 20-inch models from $1,795, plus parts and a custom shop.

Denton having a homegrown e-bike builder is genuinely unusual, and worth knowing about if you want something that does not look like everything else on the trail.

One thing to settle before you buy, and we are using the maker's own words for it. Its product copy for the BLVD chopper describes an "upgraded 1500w peak motor with top speed of up to 37 mph in off-road track mode." That off-road qualifier is Wicked Thumb's rather than ours.

Texas defines an electric bicycle at 750 watts with operable pedals, and the city rebate above requires the same. So if the rebate is part of your plan, ask which configuration you are taking delivery of and get the class and wattage written on the invoice — the application form has a box for each.

Does Denton's safe-passing law cover an e-bike?

By name. This is the finding no other page has, and it is the best local rule we have read in seventy-five cities.

Denton Code § 18-36, adopted by Ordinance 2011-046 on April 5, 2011, protects "vulnerable road users." Its own definition, at subsection (a)(3), covers:

A person operating equipment other than a motor vehicle, including, but not limited to, a bicycle (including an electric bicycle), tricycle, hand-cycle, moped, horse-drawn conveyance, skateboarder, rollerblader, roller-skater, or a person operating a manual scooter…

Two other Texas cities in this sweep have safe-passing ordinances — Laredo and McAllen — and neither names the electric bicycle inside its definition. Denton does. It also defines "motor vehicle" elsewhere in the code to exclude an electric bicycle, which is what puts you firmly on the protected side of the line.

What the driver behind you owes you

Under § 18-36(e) and (f), a passing motorist must move to the left lane where the road has two or more marked lanes in the same direction, or else pass at a safe distance — at least three feet for a passenger car or light truck, and six feet for a truck or commercial motor vehicle.

Beyond the passing margin, the ordinance requires a driver to yield to you on any left turn or U-turn (g); bars overtaking you and then turning right across your path unless safely clear (h); prohibits maneuvering "intended to intimidate or harass" you or placing you "at risk of unreasonable imminent bodily injury" (i); and imposes a general due-care duty (j).

There is a second rule in the same chapter worth knowing: § 18-38 bars any use of a wireless communication device while driving in Denton unless it is hands-free.

What you owe back

The protection comes with duties, and they are reasonable. Subsection (d) says ride as near as practicable to the right curb when you are moving slower than traffic.

The exceptions are generous: when passing, when preparing to turn left, when avoiding a hazard, or when the outside lane is under fourteen feet wide with no adjacent bike lane, or simply too narrow to share side by side. On a one-way street with two or more lanes you may ride near the left curb instead.

And a permission worth having in writing: you may ride two abreast, in a single lane on a laned roadway, so long as you do not impede the normal and reasonable flow of traffic.

Subsection (k) puts a due-care duty on you too, and makes your own violation of state law or a city ordinance a defense for the driver — so the protection is real but it is not a free pass.

Yes. In Denton's code the phrase "electric bicycle" appears in exactly two places — the motor-vehicle definition and the vulnerable-road-user section above — and both are protective. Neither chapter 18 (motor vehicles and traffic) nor chapter 22 (parks and recreation) contains a trail rule, a sidewalk rule or a helmet rule for bicycles.

So § 551.106(a) governs the trails: a local authority may not prohibit an e-bike anywhere an ordinary bicycle is permitted, with one carve-out for a path closed to motor vehicles whose tread is graded native soil. Denton's paved network is not that; its natural-surface mountain-bike trails could be, so check posted signage before you ride dirt.

Where Denton's bicycle rules actually live

Denton files its traffic and vehicle rules in Chapter 18 of the Code of Ordinances, under container subparts rather than at the top level. That matters if you go looking yourself: a search across the whole code returns almost nothing for "bicycle", because what it reaches is a stack of tables of contents rather than the operative text underneath them.

Chapter 18 is where a motor-vehicle or bicycle rule lives in this city, and it is what every citation on this page points at. If you are checking a rule for yourself, open the chapter — do not trust a site-wide search box.

1. The rebate came back with two different numbers. Asked about it, the answer engine reported "up to $750" and "up to $1,000 or 50 percent of purchase cost" in the same paragraph and left both standing. The manual settles it: $750 is the e-bike rebate and $1,000 is the separate electric-vehicle rebate. Two rows of one table, merged.
2. The city's e-bike manufacturer was never mentioned. Wicked Thumb builds electric bikes inside the city limits and did not appear in any answer we ran.
3. A parked domain sits where a real shop should be. velorepublic.com is a GoDaddy holding page; the shop is on velorepublicbikes.com.
4. A shop name that competes with two countries. velo republic autocompletes to Czech and Dominican republics — and to a nicotine brand.
5. One lead we could not close. bullseye bike shop denton tx is a live completion. We did not verify it against an owned surface in this pass, so we are not counting it and we are telling you it is outstanding rather than quietly dropping it.

Seventy-five Texas cities into this sweep, Denton is the one we would move to. Three shops and a manufacturer inside the city limits, and a council that wrote e-bikes into its safe-passing ordinance by name in 2011, before most of the country had noticed them. There is a hands-free driving rule on top, and a rebate that hands back half the price of the bike, twice a year, from whatever retailer you like.

Denton also has an active local cycling advocacy group, Bike Denton, which is a better source than we are on where the riding is good this month.
