How we verified this directory The denominator came first: all 75 Texas cities above 50,000 residents, from the Census Bureau's Vintage 2024 estimates. Each storefront was then confirmed on the strongest surface it has, either the shop's own website or its maker's own dealer roster, on August 25, 2026.

Repair-only benches, big-box shelves and rental-only floors are excluded, and a shop whose own surface could not be read is listed as a lead rather than counted. Twenty-six Texas cities have since had an individual page of their own, and those pages set their city's number here. Re-verified every six months.

Texas eBike Law — 2026 Quick Reference

Texas puts its e-bike rules in two places, and a shop floor is where they first cost money. Chapter 664 of the Transportation Code defines the machine and binds the seller; Chapter 551 governs who may ride it and where. Each rule below quotes the section it comes from, as the Legislature published it on September 4, 2026.

  • Fewer than 750 watts, and pedals that work. An electric bicycle is a bicycle equipped with "fully operable pedals" and "an electric motor of fewer than 750 watts", with "a top assisted speed of 28 miles per hour or less" (§ 664.001(4)). The statute says fewer than 750, so a frame labelled at exactly 750 watts sits outside the definition.
  • Class 1 is pedal assist to 20 mph. A Class 1 e-bike has a motor "that assists the rider only when the rider is pedaling" and "a top assisted speed of 20 miles per hour or less" (§ 664.001(1)).
  • Class 2 is throttle to 20 mph. A Class 2 e-bike has a motor "that may be used to propel the bicycle without the pedaling of the rider", with the same 20 mph ceiling (§ 664.001(2)).
  • Class 3 stops short of 28. A Class 3 e-bike is pedal assist "with a top assisted speed of more than 20 but less than 28 miles per hour" (§ 664.001(3)). Texas draws that line below 28 rather than at it.
  • The label is the seller's job, in 9-point Arial. A person who manufactures or sells an e-bike "shall apply a permanent label to the electric bicycle in a prominent location that shows in Arial font in at least 9-point type" the class, the top assisted speed and the motor wattage (§ 664.002(a)). Anyone who "changes the motor-powered speed capability or engagement" must replace that label (§ 664.002(b)).
  • A Class 3 rider is 15 or older. "A person may not operate a Class 3 electric bicycle, as defined by Section 664.001, unless the person is at least 15 years of age. This subsection does not prohibit a person who is under 15 years of age from riding on a Class 3 bicycle as a passenger" (§ 551.107(c)).
  • No license, no registration, no insurance. "Subtitles A, B, and D and Chapter 551A do not apply to the operation of an electric bicycle" (§ 551.107(a)), which is the subtitle block that carries driver licensing and vehicle registration.
  • The motor has to cut out. A person may not operate an e-bike unless the motor "disengages or ceases to function" either "when the operator stops pedaling" or "when the brakes are applied" (§ 551.107(b)). Squeeze the brakes on the test ride and feel it go.
  • Where the bike may go, and the one path it may not. The department or a local authority "may not prohibit the operation of an electric bicycle" on "a highway that is used primarily by motor vehicles" or anywhere a nonelectric bicycle may ride, "unless the area is a path that: (A) is not open to motor vehicles; and (B) has a natural surface tread made by clearing and grading the native soil without adding surfacing materials" (§ 551.106(a)).
  • Sidewalks and path speeds are the city's call. A local authority may "prohibit the operation of a bicycle on a sidewalk" and "establish speed limits for bicycles on paths set aside for the exclusive operation of bicycles" (§ 551.106(b)). Every local difference a Texas rider meets starts in that subsection.
  • The seller owes a federal standard and a speedometer. A seller must ensure the bike "complies with the equipment and manufacturing requirements for bicycles adopted by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission under 16 C.F.R. Part 1512" (§ 664.003), and that any Class 3 "is equipped with a speedometer" (§ 664.004).

Read the label before the receipt. Texas is the rare state that makes the seller print the class, the speed and the wattage on the frame, which turns a two-minute look into the whole legal question answered. The Golden Triangle and the Victoria coastal bend are different: they are the two places in Texas where the drive is long enough that ordering online with real support genuinely beats it.

Where online wins is selection and terms. A showroom carries what its distributors hand it, and in Texas that shelf has narrowed: two of the state's best-known independents now trade as Trek corporate stores, and Pedego's own Texas roster is down to four addresses.

How the count was reached

One method produces one number. For each of the 75 cities above 50,000 residents, the count is that city's own live directory page where one exists, and otherwise the distinct storefronts listed on this page. Metro towns below the 50,000 line keep their listings and are counted separately, because a table of large cities can never show them.

That gives 98 storefronts: 68 from twenty-six city pages, 20 from this page's own listings, and 10 in towns below the threshold. The per-city working is in research/shop-directory/_measures/hub_reconcile_texas_20260907.csv.

One storefront was deduplicated out along the way. The Bike Mart floor at 16702 Hollyhock Road carries a Frisco 75033 address, and the chain's own locator files it as "Prosper - Hollyhock". It is one door, counted once, in Frisco.

How to read the listings

Every entry carries one of four evidence grades, and they are not equivalent.

Site checked means the shop's own website was retrieved on August 25, 2026 and names e-bikes in its own words. It is the strongest grade here.

Brand roster checked means the address appears on a manufacturer's own published dealer list, which proves the maker authorizes that door and publishes it, not that the branch is trading today.

Verified for the city guide means the storefront was confirmed on its own surface during a city-depth pass and the evidence sits on that city's page.

Search-verified means the shop's details surfaced in dated third-party listings but its own site could not be loaded. Six entries carry it. Call before a long drive whatever the grade says.

Why the map is thin where it is thin

Ask any answer engine where to buy an e-bike in Texas and the reply skews toward brand directory pages, because the underlying map data is thin here in a way it is not in California.

Queried across the whole state through the Overpass API, OpenStreetMap holds 140 mapped bicycle-shop objects for all of Texas, across 50 named cities, read on August 29, 2026. That is barely more mapped objects statewide than the storefronts this page confirms around 75 cities, and a directory built from the map alone would inherit the undercount as though it were a fact about Texas.

So none of the entries above came from the map. Each one came from a shop's own website or its maker's own dealer roster, which is why the thin places on this page are thin for a stated reason rather than an invisible one.

Bottom line The Texas retail map is consolidating toward fewer, larger owners: two well-known independents now trade as corporate stores, one franchise map halved, and one franchise floor went independent. A dated directory beats a remembered one in a market moving that fast.

Limitations

  1. Every count on this page was re-derived on September 7, 2026, and the figures of 89 and 96 are both superseded. One method produces one number, 98, and the per-city working sits in research/shop-directory/_measures/hub_reconcile_texas_20260907.csv. Where a city has its own page, that page's number is the one used here, which is why Denton reads 3 rather than 1, Waco 3 rather than 1, Frisco 2 rather than 0 and Pasadena 2 rather than 1. Two cities moved on this pass, both because their own pages were re-read door by door: Plano from 1 to 2 and Mesquite from 0 to 1.
  2. One storefront is counted here that an earlier version of this count excluded. Denton's Wicked Thumb ElectroCycles builds machines rated 1,000 to 1,500 watts, which sit outside the chapter 664 definition of an electric bicycle, and the statewide sweep therefore left it out. The Denton city page counts it as one of that city's three floors, and the city page governs. The listing says what the machines are so the distinction is visible rather than buried.
  3. 98 is a floor rather than a census. It is the number of Texas storefronts evidenced on August 25, 2026 and re-derived on September 7. Shops that could not be confirmed on an owned surface are left out rather than padded in, so the real number of e-bike sellers in Texas is higher than the one at the top of this page.
  4. The candidate pool behind the statewide sweep cannot be re-counted. The August 25 pass worked city by city through search results and brand rosters, and the number of candidates it rejected was never written down. So "98 confirmed" can be checked door by door, while "out of how many" cannot. The countable pool that does exist, 140 OpenStreetMap objects statewide read on August 29, 2026, has not been reconciled name by name against these listings. That reconciliation is this page's largest open item.
  5. Six entries rest on dated third-party listings rather than the shop's own site, and they are labelled individually in the listings. A shop whose own site would not load is not a shop that has closed, and none of them is reported as an absence anywhere.
  6. The 98 excludes big-box shelves and rental-only floors, and it does count a service bench. Walmart and Best Buy sell e-bikes in most of the swept cities off a rack with no bicycle mechanic behind it; those shelves are named where they matter and counted nowhere. A bench that publishes bicycle service on its own site is a different thing to a buyer, so it is counted and labelled as a bench rather than a showroom. Two of the 98 are benches, and each says so in its own listing: Mesquite Bicycle & Small Engine Repair, which publishes no brand roster at all, and the REI bench in Plano, which publishes a service menu rather than a floor. Mesquite is the one city in the state whose only entry is a bench. Every other entry on this page publishes either an electric brand roster or a live electric category on its own site.
  7. Distances in the nearest-store table are the ones this project measured, and "same metro" is not a mileage. The four numbered distances are straight-line estimates for deciding whether a trip is worth making; every real drive is longer.
