How we verified this directory — Milad Ghobadibeygvand, BScN
The count begins with Illinois's 30 cities, villages and towns of 50,000 or more in the Census Bureau's 2024 estimates. Candidates came from OpenStreetMap, eight makers' dealer maps, 54 storefronts AI engines named, the shops' own store lists and 676 Google Maps searches of every place of 5,000+, all 102 counties and all 77 Chicago community areas: 373 storefronts after merging.
A store is listed when its own site, its chain's or a maker's dealer map shows it sells e-bikes and its Google Maps listing does not read closed; 520 listings were read. Vehicle dealers, rental-only businesses and closed stores stay out.
Verified October 11, 2026; due again April 2027.
Quick Answer
Illinois has 137 verified e-bike shops as of October 11, 2026, spread over 92 communities in 31 of its 102 counties. The Northeast region around Chicago holds 91 of them, Chicago 23; Aurora, Elgin, Waukegan, Cicero, Schaumburg, Decatur, Des Plaines, Oak Lawn, Mount Prospect and Berwyn have none inside their lines.
Illinois's three classes need working pedals and a motor of "less than 750 watts" (§ 1-140.10); you need no state registration or license, never ride on a sidewalk, and must be 16 to operate a Class 3 (§ 11-1517). The Illinois e-bike law guide covers your town's rules, and our commuter e-bikes ship free to Illinois.
Illinois's e-bike counters follow its people. The Northeast region, the ten counties around Chicago, holds two in three of the stores on this page and about seven in ten of the state's residents, yet 85 of the 137 stores stand outside the 30 places of 50,000 or more, in towns from Crystal Lake and Winfield to Benton and Harrisburg.
To find yours, open the region your county belongs to and look under the town printed on your own mailing address. Every listing gives you the street, a phone number where the sources agree on one, and the day the shop was checked.
Illinois's eBike Map, Place by Place
You get a row below for each of Illinois's 30 places with 50,000 or more residents in the Census Bureau's 2024 estimates, cities, villages and towns alike, since Schaumburg, Arlington Heights and Bolingbrook are all villages. A dash under Verified stores means no verified store sits inside that place's own boundary, and you will find the nearest one measured further down.
Open leads are bicycle businesses inside the place that could not be confirmed as e-bike sellers: their sites name no e-bike for sale, could not be read, or do not exist, so each is worth your phone call.

Twenty of the 30 places have at least one verified store inside their lines. Ten have none: Aurora, Elgin, Waukegan, Cicero, Schaumburg, Decatur, Des Plaines, Oak Lawn, Mount Prospect and Berwyn. Nine of those ten have a store within six miles of their Census point, and Decatur is the exception, 27.1 miles from the nearest.
A big population does not promise you a counter. Aurora, the state's second-largest city at 180,710 residents, has none inside its line, while Springfield, at 112,949, and Peoria, at 111,696, have three each.
Chicago's 23 verified stores sit in 15 of the city's 77 community areas, five of them in the Near North Side. Twenty-one stand in the Loop or the areas north and west of it; the other two are far south, Small Shop Cycles & Service on South Cottage Grove Avenue in Grand Boulevard and Chicagoland Bicycle on South Kedzie Avenue in Mount Greenwood.
Bottom line Most of Illinois's e-bike stores sit outside its biggest places, so search your own town and its neighbors first; nine of the ten big places with none have a store within six miles.
Illinois eBike Law — 2026 Quick Reference
The Illinois Vehicle Code holds the state's e-bike rules, and the motor limit is the one a shop will quote you first. As of October 11, 2026, § 1-140.10 defines a low-speed electric bicycle as one with "fully operable pedals and an electric motor of less than 750 watts", so if your bike is rated at exactly 750 watts, it falls outside all three classes.
| Rule | What the statute says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Motor | Less than 750 watts, in every class | § 1-140.10 |
| Class 1 | Motor only while you pedal, cuts out at 20 mph | § 1-140.10(a) |
| Class 2 | Motor may move the bike alone, no assistance at 20 mph | § 1-140.10(b) |
| Class 3 | Motor only while you pedal, cuts out at 28 mph; operator 16 or older | § 1-140.10(c), § 11-1517(h) |
| Registration, license, insurance | A low-speed e-bike counts as a bicycle, and the motor-vehicle definition leaves it out | § 1-106, § 1-146 |
| Sidewalks | Never | § 11-1517(g) |
| Streets and bike lanes | Anywhere bicycles are allowed | § 11-1517(e) |
| Bike paths | Allowed unless the municipality, county or local authority over the path bars them or a class | § 11-1517(f) |
You can ride a Class 3 at 16, and someone younger may ride on one only as a passenger, on a bike built to carry one (§ 11-1517(h)). The e-bike section sets no helmet rule of its own.
Break one of these rules, by riding on a sidewalk or operating a Class 3 before you turn 16, and a first or second conviction is a petty offense fined $75 to $1,000; a third within a year of the first is a Class C misdemeanor (§ 16-104, 730 ILCS 5/5-4.5-75).
What the law asks of the shop
Two Illinois laws reach the bike you see on the sales floor. Since January 1, 2018, "every manufacturer and distributor of low-speed electric bicycles shall apply a label that is permanently affixed to the bicycle in a prominent location", giving its class, "the bicycle's top assisted speed" and "the bicycle's motor wattage" (§ 11-1517(c)).
The same section makes every low-speed e-bike meet the federal bicycle standard, 16 CFR 1512, and gives every Class 3 you buy a speedometer in miles per hour (§ 11-1517(b)).
Section 11-1517 also says "No person shall knowingly tamper or modify the speed capability or engagement of a low-speed electric bicycle without replacing the label", so the label on the frame should match the bike you ride away on. Tampering without a new label is a petty offense too, fined $75 to $1,000 (§ 16-104).
Since January 1, 2026, the Micromobility Fire Safety Act has bound the seller too: "No person shall manufacture, distribute, sell, lease, rent, offer for sale, offer for lease, or offer for rent a low-speed electric bicycle unless the electrical drive system for the low-speed electric bicycle has been tested by an accredited testing laboratory", to ANSI/CAN/UL 2849 or EN 15194 until 2028 and to UL 2849 alone from January 1, 2028 (815 ILCS 361/15(a)).
The Attorney General enforces it, and a violation is "an unlawful practice under the Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act" (815 ILCS 361/25). Ask the shop which standard the drive system was tested to before you pay.
The changes that start January 1, 2027
Public Act 104-0854 takes effect January 1, 2027, and three of its changes reach what you buy:
- Ages. From that date you must be 15 to operate a Class 1 or Class 2 and 16 for a Class 3, and an operator under 18 may not carry a passenger "unless the passenger is a sibling, stepsibling, child, or stepchild of the operator" (§ 11-1517(h), as amended).
- Bikes outside the classes. "Any electric bicycle that is not a low-speed electric bicycle shall be considered a motor driven cycle" (§ 1-140.10, as amended). The Secretary of State's guide says that if you ride an e-bike or e-moto able to go faster than 28 mph, you will need "a driver's license, title, registration, and insurance" (Illinois Secretary of State).
- Who sets path rules. Until December 31, 2026, your municipality, county or local authority may close a bicycle path to e-bikes. From January 1, 2027, the rule on your path comes from the state agency or the park, forest preserve, conservation or transit district with jurisdiction over it, and "no unit of local government, including a home rule unit, may regulate low-speed electric bicycles" except as the section allows (§ 11-1517(f), (i), as amended).
State parks and the Cook County forest preserves: where your e-bike can go
On land the Illinois Department of Natural Resources owns, leases or manages, you may ride a bicycle or low-speed e-bike only "upon a roadway designated for vehicular use, parking lot, or posted bicycle trail", at no more than 20 mph on roads and trails and 10 mph in parking areas unless a sign says otherwise (17 Ill. Adm. Code 110.165).
The Forest Preserves of Cook County say Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes "are allowed on trails where bicycles are allowed", except on single-track mountain-bike trails, list Class 3 among the devices "NOT allowed anywhere", and keep you "under 15 miles per hour", like every bicycle rider there (Forest Preserves of Cook County).
Illinois e-bike incentives
As of October 11, 2026, the state rebate bill of this General Assembly has not passed: S.B. 1521, which would let you apply for a rebate after buying an electric bicycle in Illinois, was re-referred to the Senate's Assignments committee on May 22, 2026. The Chicago buying guide sets out what the City of Chicago offers you instead.
Before you pay, ask two questions. Which class is on the label the maker must fix to the frame (§ 11-1517(c)), and which laboratory tested the drive system to UL 2849 or EN 15194 (815 ILCS 361/15)? A bike rated at 750 watts or more is outside Illinois's three classes (§ 1-140.10). The Illinois e-bike law guide covers your town's own rules, and the 50-state law table sets Illinois beside its neighbors.
Want to know what to ask about? The buying guide explains the three classes, what to spend and how to check a battery's UL certification, so you walk into an Illinois shop knowing the questions, and every bike it picks ships free to Illinois.

You will find the listings grouped by the ten Economic Development Regions the Illinois Department of Employment Security publishes, each a set of whole counties, then by the town on each store's mailing address. The Northeast region, with 8,788,653 people in its ten counties, has 91 of the 137 stores, and every one of the ten regions has at least one.
A mailing address can name a bigger neighbor, so check the towns around yours. Village CycleSport's Rand Road store has an Arlington Heights address but stands inside Prospect Heights, so it is listed under Prospect Heights, and Peoria Cycle Works, with a Peoria address, is under Peoria Heights; the coverage table counts each store only inside the line it actually stands in (Village CycleSport, Census Geocoder).

Planning to ride through an Illinois winter? The winter guide puts a number on the cold: at 14°F on packed snow, riding 12 mph on the throttle, a full charge covers about 71% of what the same bike covers on a dry 77°F road. It lists the cold-weather picks Illinois's law lets you ride, and each ships free to Illinois.

If your town has none: the nearest verified store
Ten of the 30 places checked have no verified e-bike store within their own boundary. If you live in one, the table names the nearest, measured in a straight line from the place's point in the Census Bureau's 2024 Gazetteer, so your drive will run longer.
| Your town | Nearest verified store | Distance |
|---|---|---|
| Mount Prospect | Village CycleSport, Prospect Heights | 2.8 mi |
| Oak Lawn | Chicagoland Bicycle, Chicago | 2.8 mi |
| Aurora | Pedal & Spoke, North Aurora | 3.1 mi |
| Des Plaines | Wheel & Sprocket, Park Ridge | 3.1 mi |
| Berwyn | Wheel & Sprocket, Oak Park | 3.2 mi |
| Elgin | Everything Pedal Electric, South Elgin | 3.4 mi |
| Schaumburg | Never Ending Cycles, Streamwood | 3.6 mi |
| Cicero | Wheel & Sprocket, Oak Park | 3.8 mi |
| Waukegan | Zion Cyclery, Zion | 5.7 mi |
| Decatur | Schlabach's Bike Shop, Arthur | 27.1 mi |
From Decatur you face the long gap. Its nearest store, Schlabach's Bike Shop in Arthur, is 27.1 miles from the city's Census point, and the next two, Bicycle Doctor in Springfield and Durst Cycle Cycling & Fitness in Champaign, are 38.1 and 38.8 miles out. Every other place in the table has a verified store within 5.7 miles (2024 Gazetteer).

Riding in Chicago? The Chicago guide measured every city block: the median one climbs at 0.13%, so it tells you to buy for the wind, the salt and the stairs, with fenders fitted, a removable battery and hydraulic brakes. Each pick ships free to your Chicago address.
See the Chicago picksBuying online vs buying in an Illinois shop
In a shop you can ride the bike before you pay, have it fitted, and read the class label the maker must fix to the frame (§ 11-1517(c)). You can also ask, face to face, which laboratory tested the drive system: since January 1, 2026, the Micromobility Fire Safety Act has barred any Illinois seller from selling an e-bike whose drive system no accredited laboratory has tested.
Online you see more models and every term in writing. Compare the return window, the warranty and the delivery charge, and check that the listing names a class, a motor of less than 750 watts and a drive system tested to UL 2849 or EN 15194 before you order.
Why buy from Redtail if no counter is close? We ship every e-bike we sell free to Illinois, our US support team answers your email before and after you buy, and Shop Pay can split an eligible order into installments. Browse our commuter and city e-bikes or folding e-bikes, and hold each listing to Illinois's three lines: a class, a motor of less than 750 watts and a UL 2849 or EN 15194 test.
Bottom line A shop lets you ride first and read the frame's label; online, compare return windows and warranties, and buy only a bike that names its class, a motor under 750 watts and its UL 2849 or EN 15194 test.
Frequently Asked Questions — Illinois eBike Shops
Where can you buy an e-bike in Illinois?
At any of the 137 storefronts on this page, each checked in October 2026. The Northeast region holds 91 of them, and 85 of the 137 stand outside the 30 places of 50,000 or more (Census Bureau), so start with the town on your own address and the towns around it.
Are e-bikes street legal in Illinois?
Yes, if the bike fits one of the three classes: working pedals, a motor of "less than 750 watts", and assistance that stops at 20 mph (Class 1 and 2) or 28 mph (Class 3) (§ 1-140.10). You may ride it on any street or bike lane open to bicycles, but never on a sidewalk, and you must be 16 to operate a Class 3 (§ 11-1517).
Do electric bikes need to be registered in Illinois?
Not with the state: § 1-106 counts your low-speed e-bike as a bicycle, and § 1-146 leaves it out of the definition of a motor vehicle. Your town may, though: until December 31, 2026, § 11-208(a)(8) lets a local authority regulate low-speed electric bicycles "and requiring the registration and licensing of same, including the requirement of a registration fee".
From January 1, 2027, that list in § 11-208 no longer names low-speed electric bicycles, and § 11-1517(i) bars local rules on them except as that section allows (P.A. 104-0854); the Illinois e-bike law guide follows what that means for a town's sticker.
Where can you buy an electric bike in Chicago?
At 23 verified stores inside the city line, among them Kozy's Cyclery's three stores, Village Cycle Center and J.C. Lind Bike Co. on North Wells Street, Craft E-Bikes on North Elston Avenue and REI on West Eastman Street. Oak Park, Evanston and Skokie, just over the city line, have one each, and the Chicago buying guide matches bikes to your streets and winters.
Where are the e-bike shops in Naperville, Aurora and Joliet?
Naperville has two inside its line, Spokes on South Washington and the Trek Bicycle Store on Route 59, and Joliet one, Sumbaum Cycle on North Larkin. Aurora has none inside its line; Pedal & Spoke in North Aurora is 3.1 miles from its Census point, and Batavia, Winfield and Wheaton have two each.
Where are the e-bike shops in Rockford?
Rockford has one inside its line, Kegel's Bicycle Store on Charles Street, and Trek Bicycle Rockford is in Loves Park, on North Perryville Road.
Where are the e-bike shops in Peoria, Springfield and Champaign?
Peoria has three inside its line, Bushwhacker, Illinois Cycle & Fitness and a Trek store on North Sheridan Road, with Peoria Cycle Works in Peoria Heights. Springfield has three, Ace Bicycle Shop, Bicycle Doctor and Scheels, and Champaign two, Durst Cycle Cycling & Fitness and a Trek store, with a second Durst Cycle in Urbana.
Where are the e-bike shops in southern Illinois?
Seven stand in the Southern region: two in Carbondale, Carbondale Cycle Co. and Phoenix Cycles, both on South Illinois Avenue, two each in Benton and Harrisburg, and Marion Bikes in Marion. Six more are in the Southwestern region, among them The Cyclery in Edwardsville and Shiloh.
The Bottom Line
Illinois's e-bike counters are spread across 92 communities, and most of them are not in its biggest places. Twenty of the 30 places of 50,000 or more have a verified store, 85 of the 137 stores listed here stand outside them, and Decatur is the one big place more than six miles from a counter.
Choose a shop if riding before you pay, having the bike fitted and keeping a mechanic nearby matter more to you than the widest choice.
Order online if your nearest counter is far, as it is from Decatur, or the model you want is not on a nearby floor.
Ready to narrow it down? The buying guide lines up the three classes, the budget and UL battery certification, so you can shortlist a bike before you call a shop or order one, and its picks ship free to Illinois.
Compare e-bikes in the buying guideWherever you buy, check the label and the drive system's test before you pay (§ 11-1517(c), 815 ILCS 361/15), keep off the sidewalk, and mark January 1, 2027 if a rider in your house is under 18, when the age and passenger rules change.
If you know an Illinois shop that sells e-bikes and is missing here, or you find an error, write to sales@redtailebikes.com; verified corrections are published. Last verified October 11, 2026.

How the count was reached
Each storefront is counted once, and because no Illinois city has a directory page of its own yet, the statewide count and the listings you see here are the same number: 137 verified storefronts, all listed on this page.
OpenStreetMap returned 190 entries tagged as bicycle shops in Illinois; dropping four unnamed entries and one repeat leaves 185, and 109 of those list a website. Eight makers gave 153 storefront rows: the dealer locators of Bosch, Trek, Giant, Aventon, Specialized and Velotric, SWFT's pages for the three Best Buy stores that stock its e-bikes, and Pedego's directory for its one Illinois dealer.
A Google Maps search covered bike shops in all 330 incorporated places of 5,000 or more and all 102 counties, electric bike shops in the 88 places of 25,000 or more, and both in Maine Township in Cook County, the one township with 25,000 or more people outside its cities and villages, and in each of Chicago's 77 community areas.
Those 676 searches turned up 142 businesses to check, 132 of them on no other list (Google Maps).
Eighteen of the 142 sell e-bikes in their own sites' words: 14 are new, and 7 Mile Cycles, Craft E-Bikes, Golas and Sons Bicycle Repair and Pilson Pedalworks were already on OpenStreetMap or a maker's map.
Of the other 124, 56 name no e-bike for sale on their own sites, 40 publish no website, 13 could not be read, 10 are not bicycle storefronts, 2 repeat a store already listed, and one each only rents bikes, has closed, and will not service e-bikes.
The 102 websites behind the shops counted here were then read for any other Illinois store they list; 100 loaded, and they named one store no list carried: Windy City Wheelers' stall at the McHenry Riverwalk Shoppes. With it, the sources merged into 373 storefronts.
AI engines asked about Illinois e-bike shops named 54 storefronts, every one already in the sweep, and 37 of them are listed here; the one other business an answer named, a Walmart Supercenter in Harrisburg, the answer itself calls a general department store rather than an e-bike dealer.
How to read the listings
The grade at the end of each listing tells you what confirmed that the store sells e-bikes; there are four.
Site checked covers 73 of the 137: in October 2026 the shop's own website offered e-bikes in its own words.
Chain site checked covers 27: one website serves more than one storefront, so it shows that the business sells e-bikes and the listing shows which store you are visiting. Mead's Bike Shop's site serves five of them, two listed as Trek Bicycle, one as Trek Bicycle Rockford and one as Vitesse Cycle Shop in Normal; Kozy's Cyclery's and George Garner Cyclery's serve three each.
Archived site checked covers 3: the shop's live site answered only a bot check or an error on October 11, 2026, so the grade links you to the dated copy of its own site in the Internet Archive that shows e-bikes for sale, and each store's Google Maps listing reads open.
A maker's dealer map covers 34: a maker names the store as one of its e-bike dealers, and the grade takes you to that maker's locator, or for Bosch and SWFT to the store's page on it.
SWFT, an e-bike maker, lists three Best Buy stores as stocking its bikes, and they are three of the 34. Of the other 31, 17 have pages that load without offering e-bikes for sale at that store in their own words, 10 have sites that could not be read, and 4 have no working site of their own to read.

You get a phone number only when the shop's own site or store page and its Google Maps listing agree on it, or one of them settles a disagreement; otherwise the listing goes without one. Whatever the grade, call before you drive far.
Why the map is thin where it is thin
OpenStreetMap shows 81 of the 137 storefronts listed here; a directory built from the map alone would leave out 56 of them. Forty-one of the 56 are on a maker's dealer map, the Google Maps search found 14, and one is the McHenry stall a shop's own site lists.
Which shops have closed was settled on Google Maps and on the shops' own sites. Eighteen of the 373 storefronts are permanently closed, among them Bucephalus Bikes in Evanston, Shosie's Cyclery and Subversive Cycling Company, and 4 more are temporarily closed; none is counted (Google Maps).
Beyond these, the statewide search found 18 bicycle businesses Google marks permanently closed, among them the Pedego store in Winnetka and The Bike Rack in Oswego, and 6 more it marks temporarily closed; if an old listing online names one of them, you will not find it on this page.
Eighteen of the 373 are not bicycle storefronts: six motorcycle, powersports and motocross businesses, a car dealer and a boat dealer, three sellers with no storefront, three places to ride, a bicycle museum, a car and bike show, a phone repair store and a community non-profit.
Two more only rent bikes, two could not be found where they were listed, one will not service e-bikes, and seven were listed twice.
Bottom line No single source made this list. The open map misses 56 of the 137 stores, the makers' maps list a car dealer and a boat dealer, the statewide map search turns up closed shops and trailheads, and one store appears only on its owner's own site, so every store you find here was read on its own site or its maker's map.

- 184 candidates remain unresolved. One hundred seven sites load and never name an e-bike for sale, 57 businesses publish no website of their own, and 20 sites could not be read. None of them is treated as a shop that does not sell e-bikes; each is a lead worth your phone call.
- Named and not counted: 18 permanently closed storefronts, 4 temporarily closed, 2 that could not be found, 7 listed twice, 18 businesses that are not bicycle storefronts, 2 that only rent bikes and 1 that will not service e-bikes.
- Three stores are counted on an archived copy of their own site. BOJ-E-Bikes in Batavia (copy of August 15, 2025), Samcycle Electric Bikes in Palatine (October 9, 2025) and Rend Lake Electric Bike Rentals, Sales & Service in Benton (May 11, 2026) had live sites that answered only a bot check or an error on October 11, 2026; each copy shows e-bikes for sale, and each store's Google Maps listing reads open.
- Three listed stores have no Google Maps listing of their own here. For Windy City Wheelers in Arlington Heights, by appointment only by its own site, Maps answered with a list of places, and its stall at the McHenry Riverwalk Shoppes, open Friday to Sunday, returns the Arlington Heights store; CSM Power Bikes' own site says it has moved to US-12 in Richmond and sees customers by appointment, while Maps still shows its Johnsburg address. Where a shop's own site and Maps disagree on an address, the shop's own words are what you see.
- City lines are the Census Bureau's. A store counts toward a place in the table only if it stands inside that place's line, so Pedal & Spoke, 3.1 miles from Aurora's Census point but inside North Aurora, does not count toward Aurora.
- The law changes on January 1, 2027, and one bill is pending. P.A. 104-0854 changes the ages, the treatment of bikes outside the classes and who may set path rules from that date; S.B. 1521, the e-bike rebate bill, has not passed. This page states the law in force on October 11, 2026, and says where each change applies.
- Path rules can change. Until December 31, 2026, the municipality, county or local authority over a path may close it to e-bikes, and from January 1, 2027 the state agency or district with jurisdiction over it may (§ 11-1517(f)), so check the posted rules where you ride.
- Demand evidence. The questions this page answers come from 1,681 Google and Bing autocomplete suggestions read on October 10, 2026, and 16 of those phrases put to AI engines, logged out, on October 11: Google's chat assistant answered all 16 and Brave's search summary 1, every answer saved raw. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Bing's Copilot Search and Google's AI Mode could not be read, and Google's results page answered both attempts with a robot check, so the questions Google lists under People also ask are not part of this page's evidence.
- This page states no search volumes; no paid keyword data was pulled.
- Redtail sells e-bikes online and has no business tie to any shop listed here. No listing is ranked, paid for or favored for the brands we carry.
When this page expires. It is re-checked if a listed shop closes, moves or stops selling e-bikes; when P.A. 104-0854 takes effect on January 1, 2027, or if § 1-140.10, § 11-1517 or 815 ILCS 361 is amended or S.B. 1521 becomes law; if the Department of Natural Resources or the Cook County forest preserves change their e-bike rules; or when new Census estimates appear.
If you spot a change first, email sales@redtailebikes.com.

Image credit: the cover is Carol M. Highsmith's photograph of the Clarence Buckingham Memorial Fountain in Grant Park, which the Library of Congress's caption calls "Marcel François Loyau’s 1927 Clarence Buckingham Memorial Fountain at Grant Park in Chicago, the largest city in Illinois" (Library of Congress, LCCN 2020721838; Carol M. Highsmith Archive, no known restrictions on publication).
The cover extends the photograph with Nano Banana Pro on Playcut, which added the sky above it and the park at its left; the fountain, its sea creatures and the buildings behind it are the photograph's own pixels, and two rooftop signs and a bird were removed by cloning the sky around them.
