Palm Tran — eBikes on Bus Racks
Palm Beach County's bus operator publishes its bicycle rules on its own Bikes on Buses page, read on September 4, 2026. The headline rule is coverage: "All Palm Tran fixed-route buses and Go Glades vehicles are equipped with convenient front-mounted bike racks so you can combine biking and busing for a seamless commute."
The loading sequence is the operator's own, in five steps. Alert the driver first, because Palm Tran writes "Always alert the bus operator before loading your bike." Then "Use the silver latch to release and lower the rack," then "Place your front wheel in the slot," then "Pull the support arm up and over the front tire to hold your bike in place."
The fifth step is the one an e-bike rider should read twice: "Please remove any loose items before loading." A handlebar bag, a phone mount or a removable battery is a loose item on a rack at 45 miles per hour.
Unloading runs the same way in reverse. Remind the driver, pull the support arm away from the tire, lift the bike clear, and, in the operator's words, "If no other bikes are on it, please fold the rack back up."
The driver will not help you lift it. Palm Tran states plainly that "Bus operators are not permitted to assist with loading or unloading bikes." On a 60 to 80 pound fat-tire e-bike that is the whole planning problem, so lift the bike you are considering, at the shop, before you buy it for a bus commute.
Palm Tran's Bikes on Buses page publishes no weight limit and no separate rule for electric bicycles, so the practical limit is what you can raise onto a rack unaided.

Trail Access — A1A, El Rio and the Barrier Island
The postcard mile is A1A along the barrier island: flat, shaded by sea grapes, with the inlet and Red Reef Park as the natural turnaround points. Behind it, the El Rio Trail runs the city north to south along the canal, linking the FAU campus to downtown, and the residential grids stay quiet year-round.
What decides trail access here is what the code does not say. Boca Raton's ordinances mention the electric bicycle exactly once, and that mention is an exclusion rather than a restriction. A quoted-term search of the city's published code returned no provision restricting where a legal e-bike may be ridden.
That leaves the state default in place. Under Fla. Stat. § 316.20655(4) a rider of an electric bicycle has "all of the rights and duties applicable to the rider of a bicycle." Where a bicycle may go in this city, so may a Class 1, 2 or 3 electric bicycle.
Ride A1A and El Rio at path speed, not assist speed. Both corridors are shared with pedestrians and, on the barrier island, with beach traffic. Florida gives an e-bike rider a bicycle's rights and a bicycle's duties in the same sentence, and the assist ceiling on the frame is a capability, never a target.
The El Rio corridor also answers the battery-size question below without any arithmetic, and it does so under the same bicycle rights and duties the statute grants. A full north-south out-and-back on it runs well inside a mid-size pack's range, which means many Boca riders are buying more watt-hours than their week actually uses. Florida eBike Laws — What Makes an eBike Legal in Boca Raton
Two layers govern the bike here, and the second one is friendlier than most.
The state definition
Under Fla. Stat. § 316.003(23), an electric bicycle has operable pedals, a saddle and an electric motor of less than 750 watts, in three classes topping out at 20 or 28 miles per hour of assist.
Under § 316.20655(2), an electric bicycle and its rider are exempt from vehicle registration, title and insurance requirements, and subsection (4) grants the rider all of a bicyclist's rights and duties. No license, no plate, no policy. Florida e-bike laws carries the full statewide rulebook, and the 50-state table puts Florida beside its neighbors.
The city layer, excluded by name
Boca Raton's own code names the electric bicycle once, in Sec. 16-71, and it does so to keep it out of the motor-vehicle category. The definition expressly excludes "any bicycle, electric bicycle, motorized scooter, electric personal assistive mobility device" from what the city treats as a motor vehicle. Nothing in the code that follows restricts riding a legal e-bike, which is unusual on this coast and worth knowing before a first ride.
What is not an e-bike here
Anything at or above 750 watts, or built without operable pedals, falls outside § 316.003(23). The registration exemption does not reach it, the city's exclusion does not reach it, and none of the rights described above attach to it.
Epic eRides sells both categories on the same floor, which makes the boundary easy to see and easy to cross by accident. Ask for pedals, wattage and class in writing at any counter selling both. The motor guide explains where the line sits.
Battery certification and the federal rule
The battery is the part this city asks about most, and the answer is a standards answer. UL 2849 certifies the e-bike's whole electrical system, the battery, the battery-management system, the motor, the controller and the charger as one tested assembly, per UL Solutions' own standard page, with UL 2271 the pack standard inside it.
On June 24, 2026 the Consumer Product Safety Commission published a proposed federal safety standard in the Federal Register that would make compliance with those standards mandatory for micromobility products. It is a proposal and not yet a rule in force, so its status is worth confirming before certification is treated as a legal requirement.
The buying translation is short. Look for UL 2849 on the bike or UL 2271 on the pack, and charge with the supplied charger. Never charge unattended overnight or beside the only exit. Retire any pack that has been crashed, punctured or soaked.
Sizing the pack, and who fixes it
Watt-hours are the honest unit, volts multiplied by amp-hours, and every bike on Elecruiser's floor or Epic's publishes both numbers. A 48-volt, 14-amp-hour pack is roughly 672 watt-hours, good for 30 to 50 real-world miles on flat ground depending on assist level, heat and the wind off the Intracoastal. Size for the longest week you actually ride. The longest ride you can picture is the wrong yardstick.
As for repair, almost nobody rebuilds a lithium pack, and an offer to do so is a reason to walk. A UL 2849 system is certified as an assembly, which is why a pack is replaced rather than opened.
What a bench does instead is diagnose: pack, battery-management system, charger or connector, then source the manufacturer's replacement. A bike that stopped working is a connector or a charger far more often than a dead pack, and the diagnosis costs less than the assumption.

The barrier-island run on A1A is the ride visitors take, sea grapes on one side and the ocean on the other, with the inlet and Red Reef Park bracketing it. El Rio Trail is the ride residents take, a quiet north-south spine along the canal between FAU and downtown.
Between the two, the residential grids carry easy miles all year. The Intracoastal breeze is the only gradient this city offers, which is why Fla. Stat. § 316.20655(4) and its bicycle rights matter more here than any hill-climbing spec.
Two things shape a purchase here more than any spec sheet. Heat is the first: battery range and rider comfort both fall away in a Boca summer, which is an argument for buying more capacity than the commute strictly needs.
Salt is the second. East of Federal Highway, rinse the bike after beach days, dry the contacts and keep the pack indoors. A pack that spends a summer in a garage is a pack aging in an oven, so store it at roughly half charge through any idle stretch longer than a few weeks.

- What are the watt-hours, and what is the week? Volts times amp-hours gives the number that matters. Compare it against the miles you actually ride. The mileage you imagine is the wrong input.

Assembly is the last thing to settle. All three floors build and torque before handoff, so ask for the checklist on the receipt. A boxed bike bought online deserves one bench visit for a build-and-check, and with a certified bench inside a twenty-minute ride there is no reason to skip it.
