How we verified this directory — Milad Ghobadibeygvand, BScN
The denominator came first: New York's 13 cities and villages and 21 towns of 50,000 or more in the Census Bureau's 2024 estimates. The candidates came from OpenStreetMap and six makers' dealer locators, 426 storefronts once merged. We read each shop's own website for its e-bike wording and 197 Google Maps listings for closures, and set closed, rental-only and repair-only businesses aside.
Verified October 6, 2026; due again April 2027.
Quick Answer
There are 147 verified e-bike shops in New York as of October 6, 2026: 127 listed on this page across 110 communities in 42 counties, and 20 on the city pages for New York City, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Albany. The Hudson Valley holds the most, 31. Yonkers has none inside its city line.
State law (VTL § 1242) lets you ride a Class 1 or 2 e-bike at 16 or older with no license or plate, on streets posted 30 mph or less unless your city, town or village says otherwise. Class 3 is legal only inside New York City, and there is no state rebate. The New York e-bike law guide covers local rules town by town.
If you live outside New York City, the odds are eight in ten that your home is in a town rather than a city. The state's 933 towns hold 9,105,927 of its 19,867,248 residents in the Census Bureau's 2024 estimates, 2.9 million of them on Long Island.
A directory of cities alone would miss most of the state, so this one also counts the 21 towns of 50,000 or more and lists your nearest store under the community on its mailing address.
The cover shows Walkway Over the Hudson, the 1889 Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge between Poughkeepsie and Highland. Its deck stands 212 feet above the river, and the state park that runs it opens the crossing to "pedestrians, hikers, joggers and bicyclists."
New York's eBike Map, City and Town
Every New York city, village and town of 50,000 or more residents in the Census Bureau's 2024 estimates, the verified storefronts inside each line, and the candidates that could not be cleared. Six cities are counted from their own pages. A town's row includes the villages inside it, so Hempstead village is part of the Town of Hempstead's row and the column is never added up.
Find your city or town in the first column; if your row shows a dash under Verified stores, the nearest verified store is measured further down.

Twenty-four of the 34 cities and towns carry at least one verified store. The ten that carry none are Babylon, Cheektowaga, Colonie and Irondequoit among the towns, the cities of Yonkers, Mount Vernon, Schenectady, Utica and White Plains, and the village of Hempstead. The nearest verified store for each is measured further down, and for seven of them it is under four miles away.
The coverage table shows you only a fraction of the state's shops, because it stops at the Census Bureau's 50,000-resident line. Of the 127 storefronts listed on this page, 31 sit inside one of the table's towns and cities and 96 sit in smaller places: Kingston, New Paltz, Saratoga Springs, Ithaca and dozens of hamlets whose names are on the mailing address and nowhere in the Census table.
Long Island shows the pattern most clearly. The Town of Hempstead holds 792,341 people and two verified e-bike floors, and the Town of Babylon, with 218,566, holds none. Brookhaven, Oyster Bay and North Hempstead carry three or four each, spread across places such as Stony Brook, Plainview and Carle Place.
Bottom line Look for the hamlet or village on the mailing address. In New York your closest shop is often in a place too small for any city list, and its listing below carries the ZIP code you can search.
New York eBike Law — 2026 Quick Reference
New York defines an e-bike in one section and regulates it in another, and both decide what a shop may sell you. Every rule below quotes the Vehicle and Traffic Law or the General Business Law as the New York State Senate publishes it, read on October 5 and 6, 2026.
- The definition is narrow on purpose. A bicycle with electric assist is one "no more than thirty-six inches wide" with "an electric motor of less than seven hundred fifty watts, equipped with operable pedals" (VTL § 102-c). A 750 W motor sits outside that line, because the law says less than, so check the wattage on any bike you order from out of state.
- Three classes, and the third is a New York City class. Class 1 assists only while you pedal and Class 2 can run on the motor alone, both stopping at 20 mph. Class 3 reaches 25 mph and exists "[s]olely within a city having a population of one million or more" (§ 102-c); riding one anywhere else "is prohibited" (§ 1242(10)).
- No license, no registration, no plate. Because Section 125 leaves bicycles with electric assist out of the motor-vehicle definition, you need no driver's license to ride one, and the DMV says one "does not qualify for registration as a motorcycle, limited-use motorcycle, moped, or ATV."
- Sixteen is the minimum age. "No person less than sixteen years of age shall operate a bicycle with electric assist" (§ 1242(2)). If you are buying for a teenager, check the age first.
- Streets posted 30 mph or less. Unless a local law says otherwise, your e-bike "may only be operated on highways with a posted speed limit of thirty miles per hour or less," bike lanes included (§ 1242(8)). Sidewalks are off limits to you "except as may be authorized by a local law or ordinance" (§ 1242(5)(a)).
- Your town can say more, or say no. Any city, town or village may "further regulate the time, place and manner" of e-bike use and may "prohibit entirely the use of bicycles with electric assist", provided signs are posted outside the banned area (§ 1242(3)(a)). In Nassau and Suffolk counties a city, town or village, and in Westchester County a town or village, may further regulate e-bike use, including speed, helmet and clothing rules, only after its county adopts a local law first (§ 1242(3)(b) and (c)); a ban with posted signs needs no county law.
- Helmets from age 1 to 13, and on every Class 3. Riders from one to 13 must wear a helmet on any bicycle (§ 1238(5)(b)), and on a Class 3 you need one at any age: no one may operate it "unless such person is wearing a helmet" (§ 1238(5-c)).
- Tickets are civil fines. If you break the age, sidewalk, speed or Class 3 rules, you face "a civil fine not to exceed fifty dollars" (§ 1242(12)).
What the law asks of the shop
Two rules bind the seller rather than you, and they are the ones to check at the counter. Since June 1, 2022 no business may sell or lease an e-bike unless a manufacturer's label is "permanently affixed thereto, in a prominent location," stating "the class, maximum motor-assisted speed, and motor wattage" (§ 1242(11)(a)).
The battery carries its own rule. General Business Law § 495-a bars selling a lithium-ion battery "either as part of or intended for use in a bicycle with electric assist" unless an accredited laboratory has certified it to a standard referenced in UL 2849, UL 2271 or EN 15194, with the certification shown "on packaging or documentation at the time of sale" and "directly on the product itself."
If the machine you are shown exceeds the class limits, it is not an e-bike at all. The Attorney General's consumer alert of July 31, 2026 warns that "marketing and selling vehicles to New Yorkers as 'e-bikes' or 'e-scooters' that exceed state speed or power limits for those vehicles is a violation of New York law," and that such machines "may be e-motos, mopeds, or motorcycles" with registration, licensing and insurance duties attached.
No state rebate, and the bill sits in committee
New York pays no e-bike rebate. The state's consumer EV rebate, NYSERDA's Drive Clean Rebate, is for new electric cars, "up to $2,000 off the purchase or lease of 60+ new EV models."
The Ride Clean Rebate bill, S.1047, passed the Senate on June 13, 2025, died in the Assembly, and has sat in the Senate Energy and Telecommunications Committee since it was referred back on January 7, 2026. Budget for the full price when you shop.
Read the label before you pay. Look for the class, top assisted speed and motor wattage on the frame, and the laboratory mark on the battery; a bike without them is one the shop may not sell you. The New York e-bike law guide lists the county and town rules, and the 50-state law table shows how unusual New York's Class 3 limit is.
Not sure which class to ask for? The buying guide explains what each class does, what a good bike costs and how battery certification works, so you arrive at the counter knowing the answer, and every bike it recommends ships free within the contiguous United States.

If your town has none: the nearest verified store
Ten of the 34 places checked have no verified e-bike store inside their own line. If you live in one of them, below is the nearest verified storefront, measured straight-line from the Census Bureau's 2024 Gazetteer point for the place. Your road trip is always longer.
| Your city or town | Nearest verified store | Distance |
|---|---|---|
| Babylon (town) | Brickwell Cycling, Farmingdale | 9.3 mi |
| Cheektowaga (town) | Bert's Bikes & Fitness, Lancaster | 3.3 mi |
| Colonie (town) | The Freewheel Bike Shop, Albany | 3.7 mi |
| Mount Vernon | Danny's Cycles, Pelham | 1.0 mi |
| Schenectady | Freemans Bridge Sports, Glenville | 2.2 mi |
| Utica | Dick Sonne's Cycles, Fitness & Skis, New Hartford | 5.0 mi |
| White Plains | Danny's Cycles, Scarsdale | 3.7 mi |
| Hempstead (village) | REI, Carle Place | 2.8 mi |
| Irondequoit (town) | Bert's Bikes & Fitness, Webster | 3.5 mi |
| Yonkers | Five floors on its own page | 4.0 to 5.0 mi |
Nine of the ten have a verified floor within five miles of the Gazetteer point. Babylon is the real gap: a town of more than 200,000 on the South Shore whose closest verified e-bike counter is in Farmingdale, nine miles from the town's center point, and the one lead inside the town is a shop whose own site names no e-bike.

Mount Vernon's nearest store is 1.0 mile away, in Pelham; Babylon's is 9.3, in Farmingdale.
Nine miles from the nearest counter? Compare a delivered bike against the drive first. The commuter guide checks every pick against the 750-watt line and sorts them by the ride to work, from budget bikes to cargo, and every pick ships free within the contiguous United States.
See the commuter picksBuying online vs buying in a New York shop
A New York shop earns its price on three things: the test ride, the assembly, and a mechanic who sees the bike again when a spoke goes or a brake needs bleeding. If any of those matters to you, the drive is worth making, and the listings above save the wasted trips.
The counter also settles the paperwork the law puts on the seller: the class label under § 1242(11)(a) and the battery certification under § 495-a. Ask to see both before you pay, wherever you buy.
Online wins on choice and on terms you can read in advance. Return windows, warranty length and freight vary more between sellers than prices do. Redtail's commuter and city e-bikes and the full range ship free within the contiguous United States, so if your nearest floor is a long drive, you can compare the terms before deciding.
Why buy from Redtail if no shop is close? Every bike ships free within the contiguous United States, you get US support by phone or email before and after you buy, and at checkout you can pay by card, PayPal or Shop Pay, which offers installments on eligible orders.
If you will ride through an upstate winter, settle that before you shop. The winter e-bike guide sorts bikes for plowed-road commutes and for snow and ice, and measures how far a battery goes in the cold.
Riding through an upstate winter? The winter guide picks a budget, a mid-price and a top bike for each kind of winter riding you might do, and every bike in it ships free within the contiguous United States.
See the winter picksBottom line Of the 34 cities and towns of 50,000 or more, 24 carry a verified store, and 96 of the 127 listed here sit in places too small for that table. Each entry gives the address, the phone number and the date of the check; call before a long drive.
Frequently Asked Questions — New York eBike Shops
Where can you buy an e-bike in New York State?
You can buy one at any of 147 verified storefronts as of October 6, 2026: the 127 listed on this page and 20 on the city pages for New York City, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Albany. Most sit in small towns and hamlets rather than in the big cities, so search the regional listings by the community on your mailing address.
Are e-bikes legal in New York State?
Yes. VTL § 102-c recognizes three classes with a motor of less than 750 watts and operable pedals. You may ride a Class 1 or 2 bike statewide, subject to local rules, and a Class 3 only inside a city of one million or more, which today means New York City (§ 1242(10)).
Do you need a license for an electric bike in New York?
No. A bicycle with electric assist is left out of the motor-vehicle definition in VTL § 125, so you need no driver's license. You must be 16 or older to ride one (§ 1242(2)).
Do e-bikes need to be registered in New York?
No, you do not register one. The DMV states that a bicycle with electric assist "does not qualify for registration as a motorcycle, limited-use motorcycle, moped, or ATV." If you buy a two-wheeler faster than the legal limits, it is a different vehicle that may need registration, licensing and insurance, as the Attorney General warned on July 31, 2026.
Why are e-bikes banned in New York?
They are not banned statewide. You can ride a Class 1 or 2 across the state, and Class 3 is prohibited outside New York City (§ 1242(10)). What a city, town or village may do is ban e-bikes in specified areas or entirely, provided signs are posted outside the banned area (§ 1242(3)(a)), so check your town's rules on the New York e-bike law guide.
Are e-bikes legal on Long Island?
You may ride a Class 1 or 2 there but not a Class 3, because Nassau and Suffolk are outside New York City (§ 1242(10)). Cities, towns and villages there may add speed, helmet or clothing rules only after their county adopts a local law first, though any of them may ban e-bikes in specified areas or entirely, with signs posted outside the banned area (§ 1242(3)(b)). Check your town's rules before you ride.
Where are the e-bike shops on Long Island?
Twenty-two verified storefronts across 21 Long Island communities are listed above, from Montauk and Sag Harbor on the East End to Merrick and Long Beach in Nassau. The Town of Brookhaven carries the most among the island's big towns, four, and the Town of Babylon has none inside its line. If you live there, the nearest is Brickwell Cycling in Farmingdale, 9.3 miles from the town's center point.
Where are the bike shops in the Hudson Valley that sell e-bikes?
Thirty-one verified storefronts across 27 Hudson Valley communities, the most of any region on this page. Westchester County holds 12 of them, so if you live there you have the widest choice in the valley. Kingston carries three, and New Paltz and Goshen two each, with the rest spread across Orange, Ulster, Dutchess, Rockland and Putnam counties.
Is there a New York State e-bike rebate?
No, so you pay the full price. The bill that would create one, S.1047, passed the Senate on June 13, 2025 and has been in the Senate Energy and Telecommunications Committee since January 7, 2026. The state's consumer EV rebate, NYSERDA's Drive Clean Rebate, is for new electric cars.
The Bottom Line
New York's e-bike shops follow its towns. Twenty-four of the 34 cities and towns of 50,000 or more carry a verified store, and 96 of the 127 listed on this page sit in villages and hamlets too small for that table.
Go local if a test ride, a proper assembly and a mechanic close to home matter to you. Even if your town is one of the ten with no store inside its line, nine of the ten have a verified floor within five miles.
Buy online if the nearest counter is a long drive, as it is from Babylon, or the model you want is not stocked nearby. Compare return windows and warranty terms before price. When you're ready to compare, the buying guide walks you through classes, cost and battery certification first.
Either way, read the class label (§ 1242(11)(a)) and the battery mark (GBL § 495-a) before you pay, keep a Class 3 inside New York City, and put a helmet on any rider 13 or younger.

Sources, limitations and how this page was verified
How the count was reached
One number per city. For New York City, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany and Yonkers the count is the one each city's own page publishes, 20 in all. Every other storefront is listed here once, after merging the same shop's map entry and roster entries by phone, website and street address: 147 verified storefronts statewide, 127 of them listed on this page.
The candidate pool was 299 bicycle shops mapped in OpenStreetMap, 133 of them with a website, and 283 storefront rows from six makers' dealer locators: Trek, Bosch, Giant, Specialized, Velotric and Aventon. Merged, they made 426 storefronts statewide, 229 of them outside the six cities with their own pages.
How to read the listings
Each listing carries one of three evidence grades.
Site checked covers 46 of the 127: the shop's own website, read on October 6, 2026, names e-bikes in its own words.
Chain site checked covers 33: one website serves several storefronts, so it proves the business sells e-bikes and the listing shows where the branch is. Bert's Bikes & Fitness has eight such storefronts here, Bikeway and Danny's Cycles four each, and Steiner's Sports and Tom's Pro Bike three each.
A maker's dealer map covers 48: a brand dealer roster where the maker itself tags the store as an e-bike seller. Each such grade links to that maker's own dealer locator, or for Bosch to the dealer's own page there. The shop's own site was read too and did not name e-bikes, or could not be read.

One grade per listing, printed at the end of every entry.
Phone numbers were read from the shop's sources and Google Maps. Where two sources disagreed, the number on the shop's own website is printed; that settled all eight such conflicts. Whatever the grade, call before you make a long drive.
Why the map is thin where it is thin
OpenStreetMap carries 54 of the 127 storefronts listed here, and on Long Island only 4 of 22. The makers' locators fill most of the gap: 48 of the 127 are on a maker's dealer map and on no page of their own that names e-bikes, among them six of the seven in the Southern Tier and five of the eight in the Mohawk Valley.
Google Maps did the opposite job. Its listings marked 16 storefronts that the maps and rosters still carry as permanently closed, among them Crank Cycles in Millwood and Trek Bicycle Massapequa, and five as temporarily closed, including Kreb Cycle in Bellport and Tom's Pro Bike on Jay Scutti Boulevard. A sixth, Overlook's Woodstock shop, says on its own site that it is closed for renovation. None of those is counted.
Bottom line A roster alone would list closed shops, and the open map alone would miss 73 of the 127 stores listed here. This page needed both, plus a reading of every shop's own site.
Limitations
- New York City's count is its page's count. The New York City page lists the eight storefronts it verified one by one in August 2026 and states that eight is a verified count rather than a census. This statewide sweep found many more candidates inside the five boroughs; they are not listed here, because the city's own page is the place that counts them.
- Sixty-nine candidates outside the six cities remain unresolved. Forty-nine load and never mention e-bikes for sale, 19 publish no working website, and one could not be read at all: Valley Stream Bicycle in Lynbrook, whose server refused every route tried (plain fetch, our own browser, a reader proxy and the Wayback Machine). None is counted as an absence; each is a lead for a phone call.
- Named and not counted: 16 permanently and 6 temporarily closed storefronts, 2 that moved, 1 rental-only and 1 service-only business, 1 store whose site refuses e-bike work, 1 duplicate, 1 business that is not a bicycle store, 1 maker listing with no storefront found, and 2 junk entries from the map data.
- One conflict is held out. Hamptons Adventure Company in Amagansett carries a "Sales" tag on Velotric's dealer map, but its own site offers only e-bike tours and rentals. It is not counted until it says it sells.
- Distances are straight-line from the Census Bureau's 2024 Gazetteer point for each place, never driving distance.
- Eleven listings take their street from a second source, because the map or roster entry carried none or a broken one. Eight come from the Google Maps listing matched to the store by phone or street number; Tom's Pro Bike in Victor, PV Bicycle Shop and Bert's Bikes & Fitness in Hamburg come from their own websites. RV&E Bike and Skate in Canandaigua takes only its ZIP code from its Google Maps listing.
- Demand evidence. The questions this page answers come from Google and Bing autocomplete, the headings of eight directory pages that AI engines cite for New York shop searches, and 40 answers from three AI engines, read logged out and saved raw. Google's results page and its AI Mode answered with a traffic check and could not be read.
- No search-volume figure appears on this page. No keyword pricing was run for this topic.
- The cover is a generated scene. The bridge was checked against public-domain photographs and the National Park Service's engineering record before generation; see the image credit below.
- The publisher sells electric bikes. Redtail sells online and has no commercial relationship with any shop listed. The listings carry no ranking, no sponsored placement and no preference for brands Redtail stocks.
When this page expires. It is re-checked, and its numbers can change, when any of these happen: a listed shop closes, moves or stops selling e-bikes; the Legislature amends VTL § 102-c, § 1242 or § 1238 or General Business Law § 495-a; S.1047 or another rebate bill passes; one of the six city pages changes its count; or the Census Bureau publishes a new vintage of estimates. If you spot one of those first, email sales@redtailebikes.com.
