How we verified this directory — Milad Ghobadibeygvand, BScN

The count starts from Michigan's 32 places of 50,000+ in the Census Bureau's 2024 estimates: 24 cities, 8 townships. Candidates came from OpenStreetMap, eight makers' dealer maps, Traverse City Light & Power's rebate list, 60 storefronts AI engines named, the shops' own store lists and 409 Google Maps searches of every place of 5,000+, all 83 counties, 35 townships and 28 Detroit ZIP codes: 365 storefronts after merging.

Each store here sells e-bikes by its own site, its chain's or a maker's map, and its Maps listing does not read closed (461 read). Vehicle dealers, rental-only businesses and closed shops are left out.

Verified October 11, 2026; due again April 2027.

Quick Answer

Michigan has 146 verified e-bike shops as of October 11, 2026, in 109 communities across 49 of its 83 counties. Traverse City has the most, eight; Detroit and eleven other places of 50,000 or more have none inside their lines, but each has one within 5.3 miles.

Michigan's classes need working pedals and a motor "of not greater than 750 watts" (MCL 257.13e), and "Motor vehicle does not include an electric bicycle" (MCL 257.33). Any road open to bicycles is open to you, and no one under 14 may operate a Class 3 (MCL 257.662a). The Michigan e-bike law guide covers local rules, and our fat tire e-bikes ship free to Michigan.

Per resident, Michigan's e-bike counters are thickest in the north. The Northwest, the Northeast and the Upper Peninsula, home to about one in twelve Michiganders, hold 40 of the 146 stores on this page, while the three Detroit Metro counties, home to about two in five, hold 36, and Detroit itself, at 645,705 residents, has none inside its line.

Your quickest route is to find your county's region below, then the town on your mailing address. Each entry gives you the street and ZIP, a phone number where the shop's own pages and its Google Maps listing settle on one, and the date its e-bike sales were confirmed.

Michigan's eBike Map, Place by Place

The table gives you a row for every Michigan city of 50,000 or more in the Census Bureau's 2024 estimates, 24 of them, and for the 8 townships that size. In Michigan a township is a government of its own outside every city, and Clinton Township, at 101,359 residents, is larger than all but seven of the state's cities.

A dash under Verified stores means no verified store stands inside that line, and the nearest one is measured further down.

Open leads are bicycle businesses inside the place whose e-bike sales could not be confirmed: their sites name none for sale, could not be read, or do not exist, so each one is worth a phone call.

Twenty of the 32 places have a verified store inside their lines. Twelve have none: Detroit, Sterling Heights, Clinton Township, Farmington Hills, Flint, Southfield, Novi, West Bloomfield Township, Pontiac, Taylor, Dearborn Heights and St. Clair Shores. Eleven of the twelve lie in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties, and each has a verified store within 5.3 miles of its Census point.

Size is no promise of a counter. Detroit, the state's largest city at 645,705 residents, has none inside its line, and Sterling Heights, the fourth-largest at 134,342, has none either, while Ann Arbor, at 122,925, has four.

The townships count here as cities do. Six of the eight townships of 50,000 or more have a store, Waterford and Georgetown two each, and only Clinton and West Bloomfield have none.

Bottom line Michigan's biggest places hold few of its e-bike stores, so search your own town and the towns around it; each of the twelve big places with none has a verified store within 5.3 miles.

Michigan eBike Law — 2026 Quick Reference

Michigan's e-bike rules sit in the Vehicle Code, and the motor limit is where a shop conversation starts. As of October 11, 2026, MCL 257.13e counts a bike as an electric bicycle when it has a seat, "Fully operable pedals for human propulsion" and "An electric motor of not greater than 750 watts", so a motor rated at exactly 750 watts still fits a class.

Rule What the statute says Source
Motor Not greater than 750 watts, in every class MCL 257.13e(a)(iii)
Class 1 Assist only while you pedal, cut off at 20 mph MCL 257.13e(b)(i)
Class 2 The motor can move the bike without pedaling, to 20 mph, and stops when you brake MCL 257.13e(b)(ii)
Class 3 Assist only while you pedal, cut off at 28 mph; no operator under 14, and a helmet for every rider under 18 MCL 257.13e(b)(iii), MCL 257.662a(4)
Registration and plates The Vehicle Code's motor-vehicle definition leaves the e-bike out MCL 257.33
Roads and bike lanes Any part of a highway open to a bicycle, bike lanes and shoulders included MCL 257.662a(6)
Paved, crushed-limestone and rail trails Class 1 unless the trail's authority restricts it; Class 2 and 3 only where that authority allows them MCL 257.662a(8), (9)
Natural-surface nonmotorized trails Closed to e-bikes unless the trail's authority opens them MCL 257.662a(10)

Everywhere else, you ride under the rules for an ordinary bicycle: "an individual riding an electric bicycle is subject to the same requirements under this act as an individual riding a bicycle" (MCL 257.662a(1)). The local authority or state agency that runs a trail must hold a public hearing before it bans, opens or regulates e-bikes on it (MCL 257.662a(12)), which is why two trails a few miles apart can post different signs.

What the law asks of the shop and the maker

Every e-bike "offered for sale or distribution in this state" must carry a label its manufacturer or distributor permanently fixed in a prominent place, giving "the classification number, top assisted speed, and motor wattage", in Arial type of at least 9 points (MCL 257.662a(2)). Read it on the frame before you pay; it tells you which trails the bike may use.

Anyone who changes a bike's speed or how its motor engages must replace that label, and a bike whose motor is pushed past the definition, or past 750 watts, stops being an electric bicycle in the law's eyes (MCL 257.662a(3)). From then on the trail, age and road rules written for e-bikes no longer cover it. Every e-bike must also meet the federal bicycle standard, 16 CFR part 1512 (MCL 257.662a(5)).

State land: what the DNR opens and closes

The Department of Natural Resources has used its power over its own trails. Its e-bike page, read October 11, 2026, allows Class 1 on "all state park, recreation area and state forest trails/pathways that permit traditional bicycles", except state game and wildlife areas, congressionally authorized trails such as the North Country Trail, and three Pigeon River Country pathways (Michigan DNR).

A Class 2 may go wherever a Class 1 may if its rider holds the free DNR permit issued for mobility issues, and "Class 3 e-bikes are not allowed on any state-managed trail"; on DNR roads, every class may ride where a bicycle can (Michigan DNR). If you plan to ride state forest singletrack, that makes the class on the label the first thing to settle in the shop.

A bill that would change who may ride

Senate Bill 1156, introduced on September 10, 2026 and sent to the Senate's Transportation and Infrastructure committee, would rewrite § 662a so that "An individual less than 14 years of age shall not operate an electric bicycle on a public road, sidewalk, or trail" (Michigan Legislature).

As introduced, it would let a rider "older than 14 years of age but less than 18 years of age" ride only with a helmet and a parent's written permission or presence. It is a bill, not law, and the class rules above are the ones in force today.

Michigan e-bike incentives: three local programs

Michigan has no statewide e-bike rebate as of October 11, 2026: House Bill 4491, the voucher bill, passed the House on December 13, 2024 and was last referred to the Senate's Government Operations committee on December 18, 2024. Three local programs pay you instead, each to its own residents or customers:

Program Who qualifies What it pays Where you buy
Traverse City Light & Power TCLP electric customers, two per service address per year An instant $300 off an eligible e-bike at checkout Only at the utility's participating Traverse City-area shops
Lansing Board of Water & Light One per BWL residential account $300, up to $500 if your household qualifies on income No shop list: you send a receipt or invoice
City of Ann Arbor, A²ZERO Ann Arbor residents 18 or older Half the bike's cost, up to $250, or up to $1,000 if income-qualified No shop list

Lansing asks for a battery certified to UL 2849 and Ann Arbor for an e-bike certified to it, both with a motor of 750 watts or less and no conversion kit; Lansing also asks for a one-year manufacturer warranty (BWL, Ann Arbor). Ask the shop for that certificate before you buy, because the rebate depends on it.

Read the frame before you pay. The label the maker must fix to every Michigan e-bike gives its class, top assisted speed and motor wattage (MCL 257.662a(2)), and the class decides which trails you may ride: Class 1 alone has the default right to Michigan's paved and rail trails and the DNR's state park and forest trails (MCL 257.662a(8), Michigan DNR). The Michigan e-bike law guide covers the towns that wrote their own rules, and the 50-state law table sets Michigan beside Ohio, Indiana and Wisconsin.

Shopping with Michigan's 750-watt line in mind? Every one of the buying guide's nine picks is rated at 750 watts or less, inside the state's "not greater than" wording, and the guide walks you through class, budget and the UL 2849 certificate that Lansing's and Ann Arbor's rebates ask for. Each of its picks ships free to Michigan.

E-Bike Shops in Michigan, Region by Region

The listings follow Michigan's ten Prosperity Regions, each a set of whole counties, and within a region the town on each store's mailing address. The Detroit Metro region, Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties with 3,954,126 people, has 36 of the 146 stores; the Northwest, with 316,442, has 18, and every one of the ten regions has at least one.

A mailing address can name a neighbor. Trek Bicycle Grand Blanc on West Hill Road and Shumaker's Ski Shop on South Ballenger Highway both carry Flint addresses but stand outside the city, in Mundy and Flint townships, so they are listed there and do not count toward Flint; likewise Georgetown Township's two stores sit under Jenison and Hudsonville, the towns on their addresses (Census Geocoder).

Riding through a Michigan winter? The winter guide measured Detroit's: snow on the ground on 39 days from December to February and 23.5°F at 7 a.m. in January, an hour when a full charge on packed snow keeps about 72% of its range. It names the snow-and-ice picks Michigan's law admits, and each ships free to Michigan.

If your town has none: the nearest verified store

Twelve of the 32 places checked have no verified e-bike store inside their own line. If yours is one of them, the table gives the closest store in a straight line from the place's point in the Census Bureau's 2024 Gazetteer; by road, expect farther.

Your town Nearest verified store Distance
Dearborn Heights D&D Bicycles, Westland 2.5 mi
Clinton Township Trek Bicycle, Macomb Township 2.9 mi
Flint Shumaker's Ski Shop, Flint Township 3.0 mi
Novi Town and Country Bike and Boards, Northville 3.2 mi
Pontiac Clever Fox Cyclery, Auburn Hills 3.5 mi
Southfield D&D Bicycles, Berkley 3.5 mi

St. Clair Shores Trek Bicycle Grosse Pointe, Grosse Pointe Woods 3.9 mi
Detroit Warren Bike Shop, Dearborn 4.0 mi
Farmington Hills Trek Bicycle, Walled Lake 4.4 mi
Sterling Heights Detroit Electric Bike Company, Troy 5.3 mi

No big place is far from a counter. Dearborn Heights is 2.5 miles from D&D Bicycles in Westland and Clinton Township 2.9 miles from the Trek store in Macomb Township, and Sterling Heights, the farthest, is 5.3 miles from Detroit Electric Bike Company's showroom in Troy (2024 Gazetteer).

From Detroit's Census point the nearest is Warren Bike Shop on West Warren Avenue in Dearborn, 4.0 miles away, and ten bicycle businesses inside the city are open leads worth a call.

Horizontal bar chart of straight-line miles to the nearest verified e-bike store from the twelve cities and townships of 50,000 or more with no store inside their line: Sterling Heights 5.3, Farmington Hills 4.4, Detroit 4.0, St. Clair Shores 3.9, West Bloomfield Township 3.8, Taylor 3.8, Southfield 3.5, Pontiac 3.5, Novi 3.2, Flint 3.0, Clinton Township 2.9, Dearborn Heights 2.5

Headed for a state forest trail? The DNR opens its trails to Class 1 by default, and our electric mountain bike guide read 35 makers' pages to find the bikes whose makers put a Class 1 setting in writing. It found one, and every bike it picks ships free to Michigan.

Buying online vs buying in a Michigan shop

A Michigan shop lets you ride the bike before you pay, have it fitted, and read the label its maker must fix to the frame (MCL 257.662a(2)). It can also show you the UL 2849 certificate that Lansing's and Ann Arbor's rebates ask for, before you leave the store with a bike that would not qualify (BWL, Ann Arbor).

Online you choose from more models and get every term in writing. Compare the return window, the warranty and any delivery charge, and check that the listing names a class, a motor of 750 watts or less and a UL 2849 certification before you order.

Why buy from Redtail if no counter is close? Shipping to any Michigan address is free on every e-bike we sell, questions before or after the sale go to our US support team by email, and at checkout Shop Pay can split an eligible order into installments.

Start with our fat tire e-bikes for snow and sand or our commuter and city e-bikes, and hold each listing to Michigan's line: a class on the label and a motor of not greater than 750 watts.

Bottom line A shop lets you ride first and read the label; online, compare return windows and warranties, and choose a bike that names its class and a motor of 750 watts or less, with UL 2849 if you want Lansing's or Ann Arbor's rebate.

Frequently Asked Questions — Michigan eBike Shops

Where can you buy an electric bike in Michigan?

At any of the 146 storefronts listed here, every one checked in October 2026. Traverse City has eight and Marquette five, the Detroit Metro region 36 in all, and 115 of the 146 stand outside the 32 places of 50,000 or more (Census Bureau), so start with the town on your address and its neighbors.

Yes, if the bike fits one of the three classes: a seat, working pedals, a motor "of not greater than 750 watts", and assistance that stops at 20 mph (Class 1 and 2) or 28 mph (Class 3) (MCL 257.13e). You may ride it on any part of a road open to bicycles, bike lanes and shoulders included, and no one under 14 may operate a Class 3 (MCL 257.662a(4), (6)).

Are electric bikes allowed in Michigan state parks?

Class 1 bikes are, on every state park, recreation area and state forest trail that allows ordinary bicycles, except state game and wildlife areas, the North Country Trail and three Pigeon River Country pathways. A Class 2 needs the DNR's free mobility permit to go where a Class 1 may, and a Class 3 may not use any state-managed trail; every class may ride DNR roads (Michigan DNR).

Where can you buy an e-bike in Detroit?

Not inside the city line: as of October 11, 2026, no verified e-bike store stands within Detroit. Just over it, Dearborn has two, Jack's Bicycle & Fitness on Michigan Avenue and Warren Bike Shop on West Warren Avenue, the nearest to the city's Census point at 4.0 miles, and Ferndale two more, Downtown Ferndale Bike Shop and Ted's Bike Shop.

Detroit Moped Works on Michigan Avenue sells e-bikes beside its mopeds and scooters (Detroit Moped Works), but this page counts no vehicle dealers.

Where are the e-bike shops in Grand Rapids?

Grand Rapids has two inside its line, Freewheeler Bike Shop on Leonard Street NW and Grand Rapids Bicycle Co. on Fulton Street East. The suburbs add more: Wyoming, Kentwood and Grandville have two each, Village Bike & Fitness has stores in Plainfield Township and Jenison, Pedego Grand Rapids is in Cascade Township and Great Lakes eBikes in Belmont.

Where are the e-bike shops in Ann Arbor and Lansing?

Ann Arbor has four inside its line, H.E.H. Human Electric Hybrids on Miller Avenue, REI on West Eisenhower Parkway, Sic Transit Cycles on Pontiac Trail and Wheels In Motion on Washtenaw Avenue, with D&D Bicycles on Jackson Road in Scio Township.

Lansing has one, Eric's Cycling & Fitness on South Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard, and East Lansing, Okemos and DeWitt add four more; if the Lansing Board of Water & Light is your utility, its rebate pays $300 (BWL).

Where are the e-bike shops in Traverse City and the Upper Peninsula?

Traverse City has eight, the most of any community on this page, among them Brick Wheels and City Bike Shop on East Eighth Street, and all nine shops on Traverse City Light & Power's rebate list have a store listed here (TCLP). In the Upper Peninsula, Marquette has five, Houghton two, and Calumet, Copper Harbor, Escanaba, Iron Mountain, Iron River, Ironwood, Munising, Negaunee and Sault Ste. Marie one each.

The Bottom Line

Michigan's e-bike counters are spread over 109 communities, and few of them sit in its biggest places: 20 of the 32 places of 50,000 or more have a verified store, 115 of the 146 stores stand outside them, and each of the twelve big places with none, eleven of them around Detroit, is within 5.3 miles of one.

A shop suits you if you want to ride before you pay, have the bike fitted and keep a mechanic close.

Buying online suits you if the bike you want is not on a floor near you, or you would rather compare more models than one shop stocks.

Shortlist before you shop. The buying guide sorts its picks by how you ride and explains the three classes, what to spend and UL 2849 certification, so you can narrow your choice before you visit a Michigan shop or order online, and every pick in it ships free to Michigan.

Compare e-bikes in the buying guide

Wherever you buy, read the class, speed and wattage label on the frame before you pay (MCL 257.662a(2)), choose a Class 1 if you want the DNR's trails (Michigan DNR), and keep an eye on Senate Bill 1156 if a rider in your house is under 18.

If you know a Michigan shop that sells e-bikes and is missing here, or you find an error, write to sales@redtailebikes.com; verified corrections are published. Last verified October 11, 2026.

Sources, limitations and how this page was verified

How the count was reached

Each storefront is counted once. No Michigan city has a directory page of its own yet, so the statewide count and this page's listings are one number: 146 verified storefronts, all listed on this page.

OpenStreetMap returned 139 entries tagged as bicycle shops in Michigan; dropping five unnamed entries and one repeat leaves 133, and 52 of those list a website. Eight makers gave 181 storefront rows: the dealer locators of Bosch, Aventon, Giant, Trek, Specialized and Velotric, SWFT's pages for the two Best Buy stores that stock its e-bikes, and Pedego's directory for its five Michigan dealers.

Traverse City Light & Power's rebate page added the 10 locations of the 9 shops that take its rebate (TCLP).

A Google Maps search covered bike shops in all 153 incorporated places of 5,000 or more and all 83 counties, electric bike shops in the 47 places of 25,000 or more, and both in the 35 townships with 25,000 or more people outside their villages and in 28 Detroit ZIP codes. The 409 searches surfaced 136 businesses to check, 130 of which no other source carried (Google Maps).

Nineteen of the 136 sell e-bikes in their own sites' words: 16 are new, and CycleFit Multisport, D&D Bicycles' Berkley store and Quick Stop Bike Shop were already on OpenStreetMap or a maker's map. Of the other 117, 45 name no e-bike for sale on their own sites, 39 publish no website, 24 could not be read, 3 only rent bikes, 3 are not bicycle storefronts and 3 repeat a store already listed.

The 102 websites behind the stores counted here were then read for any other Michigan store they list; every one loaded, and none named a store the other sources had missed. With every source merged, 365 storefronts remained to judge.

AI engines asked about Michigan e-bike shops named 60 storefronts, 43 of them listed here and the other 17 open leads, closed shops or businesses this page does not count. Two more businesses the answers named are not counted either: Electrify Detroit, an e-bike service that collects bikes by scheduled pickup and keeps no walk-in counter, and a Walmart in Lansing, a department store.

How to read the listings

Each listing ends with a grade that names what confirmed the store sells e-bikes; there are three.

Site checked covers 72 of the 146: the shop's own website, read in October 2026, offered e-bikes for sale in its own words.

Chain site checked covers 33: one website serves several storefronts, so it shows the business sells e-bikes while the listing shows which store you are visiting. D&D Bicycles' site serves seven of them, and the sites of Erik's, West Michigan Bike & Fitness and Down Wind Sports three each.

A maker's dealer map covers 41: a maker names the store as one of its e-bike dealers, and the grade links you to that maker's locator, or for Bosch and SWFT to the store's own page there.

Two of the 41 are the Best Buy stores SWFT, an e-bike maker, lists as stocking its bikes. Of the other 39, 19 have sites that load without offering e-bikes for sale at that store in their own words, 13 have sites that could not be read, and 7 have no working site of their own.

Bar chart of how the 146 listings were verified: site checked 72, chain site checked 33, a maker's dealer map 41

You see a phone number only where the shop's own site or store page and its Google Maps listing agree on one, or where one of them settles a disagreement; otherwise the listing goes without. Whatever the grade, call before a long drive.

Why the map is thin where it is thin

OpenStreetMap shows 59 of the 146 storefronts listed here; built from the map alone, this page would miss 87 of them. Seventy-one of the 87 are on a maker's dealer map, and the Google Maps search found the other 16.

Closures were settled on Google Maps and on the shops' own sites. Sixteen of the 365 storefronts are permanently closed, among them Al Petri & Sons Bicycles, Mr. Bike, Ski & Fitness in Escanaba and three Trek stores, in Detroit's Midtown, Grand Ledge and Pontiac, and 3 more are temporarily closed; none is counted (Google Maps).

The statewide search found 13 more bicycle businesses Google marks permanently closed, among them Downtown Detroit Bike Shop and Velocipede Peddler in East Lansing, and 8 it marks temporarily closed; if an old listing online names one of them, you will not find it here.

Eight of the 365 are not bicycle storefronts: six vehicle dealers (a motorcycle and powersports dealership, an electric-motorcycle dealer, a moped and scooter shop, a golf-cart dealer, a boat dealer and an ATV dealer), a locksmith and a trike maker's factory. Three more only rent bikes, three could not be found where they were listed, and 20 were listed twice.

Bottom line No single source holds Michigan's e-bike stores: the open map misses 87 of the 146, the makers' maps include a boat dealer and a golf-cart dealer, and the map search turns up rental fleets and closed shops, so every store here was read on its own site or a maker's map.

Limitations

  1. 166 candidates remain unresolved. Eighty sites load and never name an e-bike for sale, 59 businesses publish no website of their own, and 27 sites could not be read. None of them is treated as a shop that does not sell e-bikes; each is a lead worth your call.
  2. Named and not counted: 16 permanently closed storefronts, 3 temporarily closed, 3 that could not be found, 20 listed twice, 8 businesses that are not bicycle storefronts and 3 that only rent bikes.
  3. One listed store has no single Google Maps listing. For Village Bike & Fitness's Jenison store, Maps answered with a list of places; the chain's own store locator gives its address, 450 Baldwin St. (Village Bike & Fitness).
  4. City and township lines are the Census Bureau's. A store counts toward a row of the table only if it stands inside that place's line, so Trek Bicycle Grand Blanc, on West Hill Road with a Flint address, counts toward Mundy Township, not Flint.
  5. One bill is pending, and the voucher bill stalled. Senate Bill 1156 is in committee, and House Bill 4491 has not passed the Senate; this page states the law in force on October 11, 2026.
  6. Trail rules can change. The agency or local authority over a trail may open or close it to e-bikes after a public hearing (MCL 257.662a(12)), so check the posted rules where you ride.
  7. Demand evidence. The questions this page answers come from 1,506 Google and Bing autocomplete suggestions read on October 11, 2026, and 16 of those phrases put to AI engines, logged out, the same day: Google's chat assistant answered all 16, one of them cut short, Perplexity 13 and Brave's search summary 5, every answer saved raw. ChatGPT, Bing's Copilot Search and Google's AI Mode could not be read, and Google's results page answered with a robot check, so the questions Google lists under People also ask are not part of this page's evidence.
  8. This page states no search volumes; no paid keyword data was pulled.
  9. Redtail sells e-bikes online and has no business tie to any shop listed here. No listing is ranked, paid for or favored for the brands we carry.

When this page expires. It is re-checked if a listed shop closes, moves or stops selling e-bikes; if MCL 257.13e or 257.662a is amended, Senate Bill 1156 or any e-bike bill becomes law, or the DNR changes its e-bike rules; if Traverse City Light & Power, the Lansing Board of Water & Light or the City of Ann Arbor changes or ends its e-bike rebate; or when new Census estimates appear.

If you spot a change first, email sales@redtailebikes.com.

Highsmith's photograph of the St. Joseph North Pier Inner and Outer Lights, which the Library of Congress's caption calls "A view of neighboring lighthouses on Lake Michigan in St. Joseph, Michigan" (Library of Congress, LCCN 2020742190; Carol M. Highsmith Archive, no known restrictions on publication).

The cover extends the photograph with Nano Banana Pro on Playcut, which added the sky above it and, at its left, more of the pier wall, the catwalk and the lake; the lighthouses, the catwalk beside them and the water in front are the photograph's own pixels, and one dust spot in its sky was removed by filling it from the sky around it.
