How we verified this directory — Milad Ghobadibeygvand, BScN

We read seven e-bike makers' dealer maps, OpenStreetMap, Yelp, Superpages, Google Maps, eight AI-engine questions and each business's own website. The Census geocoder put every address inside or outside the city line.

A store makes the list on its own website's word or a maker's dealer map, never on a directory listing alone. Every lead within 5 miles was read; from 5 to 10 miles, maker-listed floors only. Last verified October 5, 2026; due again April 2027.

Quick Answer

Among the bike shops in Yonkers, NY, no store inside city limits shows an e-bike floor on its own site or a maker's map as of October 5, 2026. REI at Ridge Hill, Jen's Cycles and County Cycle Center are marked permanently closed. Five e-bike floors sit 4.0 to 5.0 straight-line miles out: Pelham, Scarsdale, Dobbs Ferry, Closter and Tenafly.

Yonkers' own law lets a Class 1 or 2 ride bike lanes and roads posted 30 mph or less, never sidewalks. The buying guide helps you pick a class, and the New York law page covers the state rules.

Yonkers counted 211,040 people in the Census Bureau's 2024 estimate, the largest city in Westchester County on that count. The cover shows Philipse Manor Hall, the Georgian house at Warburton Avenue and Dock Street that the state runs as a historic site.

The 0 Verified eBike Shops in Yonkers

Three Yonkers bike shops have closed, and none of the businesses still open names an e-bike for sale. If you want to buy in person, the nearest floors are 4 to 5 straight-line miles away, farther by road.

Named, checked and not counted.

  • Closed: REI at Ridge Hill, 49 Fitzgerald Street, which REI's own store list does not include; Jen's Cycles on Crisfield Street, whose web address now opens a Long Island shop although Specialized's retailer list still carries it; County Cycle Center on McLean Avenue; and Westchester Motorsports on Saw Mill River Road. Google Maps marks all four permanently closed.
  • Stores that name no e-bike for sale: DICK'S Sporting Goods at Ridge Hill, which Giant's dealer list carries without its e-bike tag; L.L.Bean at Ridge Hill; and EM Hardware on South Broadway, which Google returns for a South Broadway bike-shop search.
  • Ask first: Glamour Furniture & Bikes at 10 North Broadway is a furniture store whose Google Maps reviewers write of a "huge collection of bikes and scooters." No site or maker map names an e-bike, so call (914) 207-6610 before you go.
  • Not an e-bike business: DMNY Onewheel Shop on Blair Street, which services Onewheel electric boards.

Bar chart of the 16 businesses tied to Yonkers by verdict: 4 closed, 4 that name no e-bike for sale, 1 that is not an e-bike business and 7 outside the city line, with none verified

Closed stores still show up in answers. Three of five AI answers to a Yonkers bike-shop question listed County Cycle Center, and two listed REI; Google Maps marks both closed, so call before you drive.

Bee-Line Buses and Metro-North — Where an eBike Can Travel

Your e-bike cannot ride a Bee-Line bus at all, and Metro-North's own pages point two ways on whether it may board a train, so ask before a trip that depends on either.

Bee-Line. The county's bike rack brochure lists "Electric powered bicycles" among the bikes its racks cannot carry, beside fat bikes and tandems, so yours stays off the rack. It adds that "electric or gas powered bikes" are "not allowed inside Bee-Line buses." Racks take bikes on 20- to 29-inch tires up to 2.3 inches wide and 55 pounds.

Metro-North. Its bike rules, updated August 5, 2025, define a bike as "human-powered" and bar "motorized" bicycles, yet also say that "If you have a Personal Electronic Vehicle (PEV), the MTA's PEV policy applies." That MTA policy lets a "permissible" PEV travel switched off, never ridden or charged, and treats it "the same as a bicycle" for times and limits.

Under those bicycle rules, no bike rides weekday trains into Grand Central arriving 6 to 10 a.m. or out of it leaving 4 to 8 p.m. If your bike folds to 32 inches wide or less, you may carry it folded onto any train.

Fold or call. A folding e-bike, carried folded and switched off, is the clearest case under the MTA's PEV policy; a full-size one meets two texts that point different ways, so ask the railroad before you plan around it.

Bike Paths — the County Trailway, the Bronx River and the Old Croton Aqueduct

Yonkers' paths split three ways: the county's paved trailways ban e-bikes, the state's aqueduct trail allows some classes, and the city's multiuse paths stay closed to them until posted. The city's own rail trail, the Greenway, is not built yet.

The rules that apply

Yonkers' § 109-71 bars your e-bike from "a multiuse path unless it has been officially posted for such use." State law's § 1242(4)(a) says the same of public land: no e-bike until it is "designated and posted for travel by bicycles with electric assist."

The South County Trailway

The county's 2022 reopening notice describes the rebuilt, fully paved South County Trailway from Barney Street in Yonkers to Route 119 in Elmsford. In 2024 the county executive proposed naming it and the North County Trailway for Andrew P. O'Rourke.

Westchester County Parks' trail list now shows the Andrew P. O'Rourke Westchester County Trailway, 36.2 paved miles from Van Cortlandt Park north, with a plain rule: "No motorized vehicles/e-bikes."

The Yonkers Greenway

The city's Greenway is planned to run 3.1 miles from Van Cortlandt Park to the downtown rail station, off-road on the old Putnam Railroad bed and in bike lanes along South Broadway.

It was still in design in January 2026, when the city's contract board extended the consultant preparing its design and bidding documents to December 31, 2026, "due to governmental review delays." Once it opens, the rules above apply: a Class 1 or 2 may ride its South Broadway bike lanes, and its off-road path only where a sign allows e-bikes.

The Bronx River Pathway

The same list gives the 11.2-mile paved Bronx River Pathway beside the parkway the same rule, "No motorized vehicles/e-bikes." Its restrooms open during Bicycle Sundays only, May through October, so plan a pedal ride for those days.

Old Croton Aqueduct State Historic Park

The aqueduct trail runs from Van Cortlandt Park at the Bronx-Yonkers border north to the Croton Dam, reached from cross streets over 26 miles. The park calls the path the aqueduct's "grassy ceiling" and says parts of it suit biking, except in mud season.

State Parks' e-bike policy allows Class 1 and 2 on paved and improved trails at 15 mph, Class 1 alone on natural-surface trails open to bikes, and no Class 3. Where the path is grass, your e-bike must be a Class 1.

Where riders get caught out: the trailway through Yonkers. It is paved and open to bicycles, so it looks like your route, yet the county's rule reads "No motorized vehicles/e-bikes." Take it on a pedal bike, or keep your e-bike on the streets.

New York eBike Laws — What Makes an eBike Legal in Yonkers

State law sets the classes and the age, and Yonkers adds its own detailed e-bike ordinance, § 109-71, adopted on February 11, 2025.

The state definition

Section 102-c defines a bicycle with electric assist as a bike "no more than thirty-six inches wide" with "an electric motor of less than seven hundred fifty watts, equipped with operable pedals." Your bike's class depends on how the motor helps and where it stops.

Class The motor Help stops at Yonkers
1 Works only while you pedal 20 mph Legal
2 Can move the bike alone 20 mph Legal
3 Can move the bike alone 25 mph Banned

Section 1242(10) bans a Class 3 "outside of a city having a population of one million or more." New York City is above that line and Yonkers, at 211,040, is below it, so the Class 3 ban that does not reach the Bronx does apply in Yonkers.

License, registration and the label

You need no driver's license and no plate. Section 125 leaves "bicycles with electric assist" out of the motor-vehicle definition, and the DMV says one "does not qualify for registration as a motorcycle, limited-use motorcycle, moped, or ATV."

Your bike must carry the maker's label showing "the class, maximum motor-assisted speed, and motor wattage" (§ 1242(11)(b)), or you risk "a civil fine of up to fifty dollars."

Yonkers' § 109-71

The ordinance covers Class 1 and 2 e-bikes and e-scooters as "electric mobility devices," and gives you the duties of a driver and a bicyclist. You must yield to pedestrians "at all times" and use a bicyclist's hand signals.

  • Where. Your Class 1 or 2 may ride "in any bicycle lane or on a public highway if its maximum speed limit does not exceed 30 miles per hour." On a faster road, you may ride only inside a marked bike lane.
  • Where not. No sidewalk or other area limited to pedestrians, no landscaping or public art, and no multiuse path unless posted.
  • How. Not two abreast, no headset covering both ears, no portable electronic device, and no passenger unless the bike is built for one.
  • Equipment. A bell heard at 100 feet, a brake that stops you within 15 feet, and at night a white front light, a red rear light and side lights.
  • Speed. You may not ride an e-bike faster than "20 miles per hour," or an e-scooter faster than 15.
  • Parking. Never on a sidewalk's pedestrian path, an ADA ramp, a multiuse path or a transit stop outside a rack.

A violation carries "a fine not exceeding $250 or confinement in jail not exceeding 10 days, or both."

What is not an e-bike in Yonkers

The Attorney General's July 31, 2026 consumer alert says two-wheelers that travel beyond the state's speed limits "are not e-bikes or e-scooters under New York law." Yonkers' ordinance names only Class 1 and 2, so a Class 3 or a faster machine gets none of its permissions.

Age, helmets and state fines

  • Age. "No person less than sixteen years of age shall operate a bicycle with electric assist" (§ 1242(2)).
  • Helmets. Section 1238 requires one under 14 and on a Class 3 at any age. Bill S1542, which would add 16- and 17-year-olds, has not passed.
  • State fines. Breaking the state's age, sidewalk, yield-to-pedestrians, speed or Class 3 rules brings "a civil fine not to exceed fifty dollars" (§ 1242(12)).

Yonkers' short rule: a Class 1 or 2 under 750 watts, 16 or older, 20 mph at most, bike lanes or roads posted 30 mph or less, a bell, a brake and lights, and never a sidewalk.

Where to Ride Your eBike in Yonkers

Take bike lanes and streets posted 30 mph or less, keep your lights and bell working, and leave the county trailways to pedal bikes.

Six panels of where a Yonkers e-bike may ride: bike lanes or roads posted 30 mph or less, off every Yonkers sidewalk, 20 mph top speed, age 16 for any e-bike, no e-bikes on the county trailway or Bronx River Pathway, and no e-bike on a Bee-Line rack or inside the bus

Your Yonkers riding checklist

  • Check the label: Class 1 or 2, under 750 watts.
  • Fit a bell and, for evening rides, white, red and side lights.
  • Use bike lanes, and only roads posted 30 mph or less outside them.
  • Stay off sidewalks and any multiuse path without an e-bike sign.
  • Keep off the county trailway and the Bronx River Pathway under power.
  • Leave the bike at home for a Bee-Line trip.

Citi Bike

You will not find a Citi Bike station in Yonkers. Its station feed, read October 5, 2026, lists 2,520 stations, and the northernmost, at Riverdale Avenue and West 263rd Street, sits on the New York City side of the line, 3.0 miles from central Yonkers.

Rebates

Westchester's Project MOVER gives "a $1,000 point-of-sale rebate on a new electric bicycle" to adults who meet its income or assistance-program test and "Reside or work" in Ossining, Croton-on-Hudson, Sleepy Hollow, Tarrytown or Dobbs Ferry. Yonkers is not on that list, but if you live in Yonkers and work in one of those villages, you may apply; the next drawing is November 1, 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions — Yonkers, NY eBikes

Is there an e-bike shop in Yonkers?

Not inside the city on October 5, 2026. REI at Ridge Hill, Jen's Cycles and County Cycle Center are marked permanently closed, and no open Yonkers business shows an e-bike floor on its own site or a maker's map, so your nearest test ride is 4 to 5 straight-line miles away.

Where is the closest e-bike shop to Yonkers?

Danny's Cycles in Pelham, 4.0 straight-line miles out. Danny's Scarsdale store and Endless Trail Bikeworx in Dobbs Ferry are 4.7 miles away, and Trek Bicycle Closter and Tenafly Bicycle Workshop in New Jersey are 4.9 and 5.0.

Is Yonkers part of New York City?

No. Yonkers is its own city in Westchester County, on the Bronx border, so New York City's rules stop at its line. That matters for a Class 3, which state law allows only in a city of one million or more.

Does Citi Bike work in Yonkers?

No. Citi Bike's station feed lists no station in Yonkers; the northernmost, at Riverdale Avenue and West 263rd Street, is on the New York City side of the line, 3.0 miles from central Yonkers.

Can you ride an e-bike on the Yonkers rail trail?

Not under power. Westchester County Parks lists its trailway, which takes in the old South County Trailway through Yonkers, with "No motorized vehicles/e-bikes." The city's planned Yonkers Greenway, on the old Putnam rail bed, was still in design in January 2026, when the city extended that work to December 31, 2026.

Can you ride an e-bike in a Yonkers bike lane?

Yes. Section 109-71 lets a Class 1 or 2 use "any bicycle lane," and on a road posted over 30 mph you may ride only inside a marked bike lane.

Can electric scooters use the bike lane?

In Yonkers, yes: § 109-71 covers e-scooters as electric mobility devices, allowed in bike lanes at up to 15 mph, and keeps them off sidewalks.

Do you need a license for an e-bike in New York?

No. Section 125 keeps bicycles with electric assist out of the motor-vehicle definition, so you need no license or plate. Your bike needs the maker's label showing its class, top assisted speed and wattage.

Sources, limitations and how this page was verified

The denominator

Yonkers had 211,040 residents in the Census Bureau's 2024 vintage estimate (New York file, row "Yonkers city"), against a 2020 estimates base of 211,575.

Sixteen businesses were tied to Yonkers by at least one source: 4 closed, 4 that name no e-bike for sale, 1 that is not an e-bike business and 7 within 5 miles outside the city line. None was verified. Duplicates, businesses that sell no bicycles and leads in farther towns were set aside before any verdict.

The sources, and what each one could and could not do

Seven makers' dealer maps were read on October 5, 2026, each with a control: Velotric, Aventon, Giant, Bosch, Specialized, Trek and Pedego, to 10 miles. Specialized still lists Jen's Cycles, which Google Maps marks closed; Bosch also lists Sleek eBikes in Tarrytown, for which a Google Maps search finds no business, so it is not counted.

OpenStreetMap returned 3 objects inside relation 174494, so the map is a lead and never a count here.

Directories and AI search. Yelp, Superpages and Google Maps were read. Eight questions went to seven answer engines and 41 of 56 answers were read: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Mode, Google's chat assistant and Bing's Copilot Search answered all eight, Brave one, and Copilot could not be read.

The code. Yonkers' code on eCode360 includes legislation through October 28, 2025. The City Council's Legistar record was searched by title for every matter introduced or passed since, 267 and 210 of them, with § 109-71's own ordinance as the control; none touches e-bikes.

City limits

Every Yonkers street address counted here returned "Yonkers city" from the Census geocoder, and the six Citi Bike stations nearest the line returned "New York city." Miles run from the Census 2024 Gazetteer point; road miles run longer.

Limitations

  1. The 5-to-10-mile band counts maker-listed floors only; other shops in that band, in the Bronx, Manhattan and Bergen County, were not read.
  2. Glamour Furniture & Bikes may sell e-bikes; its reviews mention bikes and scooters, and nothing more specific was found.
  3. Metro-North's bike page and the MTA's PEV policy disagree on full-size e-bikes; the railroad decides.
  4. Westchester County's trailway rule is quoted from its parks page; the county code itself was not read.
  5. The Greenway's status rests on the city's Board of Contract and Supply: the January 13, 2026 extension, and no Greenway item on its 18 agendas from January 27 to September 22, 2026. The city's project page still gives a spring 2024 start.
  6. Re-verification is due April 2027.

What would age this page, and when to re-check

  • An e-bike store opening inside Yonkers, or Danny's, Endless Trail or the New Jersey dealers changing their maker listings.
  • Yonkers amending § 109-71, opening the Greenway or posting a multiuse path for e-bikes, or the county changing its trailway rule.
  • Project MOVER adding Yonkers, Citi Bike reaching Yonkers, or Metro-North reconciling its bike and PEV rules.
