How we verified this directory — Milad Ghobadibeygvand, BScN

We started from New Jersey's 564 municipalities in the Census Bureau's 2024 estimates, counting Township-form governments together with City/Borough/Town/Village-form places, because the Census Bureau's place-level file lists no township. Candidates came from OpenStreetMap, seven makers' dealer maps, a Google Maps search of every municipality of 5,000+ and every county, and AI search engines' answers.

A store counts when its own website offers e-bikes for sale or a maker's dealer map lists its address, and Google Maps shows it open. Closed stores, rentals, vehicle dealers and repair-only shops are left out.

Verified October 14, 2026; due again April 2027.

Quick Answer

There are 100 verified e-bike shops in New Jersey as of October 14, 2026, in 89 communities across 20 of the state's 21 counties. Jersey City and Ocean City each have 3, the most of any community, and 14 of the state's 39 municipalities of 50,000 or more have at least one.

New Jersey sorts e-bikes into three categories of its own in place of Class 1, 2 and 3. Since P.L.2025, c.285 took effect on January 19, 2026, you need a license to ride any e-bike and the bike needs a state registration, and motorized bicycles (any throttle, or pedal assist above 20 mph) need insurance as well. The New Jersey e-bike law guide covers the three categories and the deadlines in full.

Size is a poor guide to what you will find here. Newark, New Jersey's largest city at 317,303 people, carries 1 verified store inside its line, while Jersey City, 302,824, carries 3, and small towns such as Asbury Park, Ocean City and Shrewsbury each carry two or three, more per capita than either big city.

Start with the municipality on your own mailing address. Each listing gives you the street, the phone where one could be confirmed, and what verified the store, grouped by the state's three Metropolitan Planning Organization regions: North Jersey (NJTPA), the Delaware Valley (DVRPC) and South Jersey (SJTPO). If a store's address names a village or neighborhood, look under the town it mails from, because that is where you will find it.

The cover shows the Cape May Lighthouse in Cape May Point State Park, built in 1859 and 157 feet 6 inches tall from the ground line to the ventilator ball. Visitors climb its 199 steps for the view, in the operator's count (Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities, read October 14, 2026).

New Jersey's eBike Map, Region by Region

The table below gives every New Jersey municipality of 50,000 or more residents in the Census Bureau's 2024 estimates, City/Borough/Town/Village-form places and Township-form county subdivisions together. The Census Bureau's place-level file lists no New Jersey township, so a table built from it alone would silently drop Lakewood, Edison, Woodbridge, Toms River and Hamilton, five of the state's ten largest municipalities.

A dash under Verified stores means no verified store stands inside that municipality's line. Open leads counts bicycle businesses there that could not be confirmed as e-bike sellers: their sites name no e-bike for sale, could not be read, or they have no site. Find your own municipality first; if it shows a dash, the nearest-store table tells you how far the closest verified counter is.

{#nj-coverage-table}

14 of these 39 municipalities carry at least one verified store inside their line. The other 25 have none, among them seven of New Jersey's ten largest municipalities: Lakewood, Elizabeth, Edison, Woodbridge, Toms River, Hamilton and Trenton all show a dash.

The 100 stores on this page reach well beyond these 39 places: 84 of them sit in smaller municipalities, so the table above is only a start. The full regional listings below cover every verified store, large town or small.

20 of New Jersey's 21 counties carry at least one verified store. The exception is Salem County, the state's least populous at 65,874 residents; the nearest verified store to the city of Salem, its county seat, is The Caffeinated Cyclist in Pitman, Gloucester County, 21.5 straight-line miles away (2024 Gazetteer coordinates, measured 2026-10-14).

Horizontal bar chart of the 100 verified e-bike storefronts listed on this page by county: Bergen 11, Morris 10, Cape May 9, Monmouth 9, Burlington 8, Essex 8, Ocean 7, Hudson 6, Atlantic 5, Mercer 5, Gloucester 3, Somerset 3, Warren 3, Camden 2, Hunterdon 2, Middlesex 2, Passaic 2, Sussex 2, Union 2, Cumberland 1, Salem 0.

Bottom line By county, Bergen County leads with 11 verified stores and Cape May County, the Shore's leader, carries 9, more than Newark, Elizabeth, Paterson, Trenton and Camden combined (2). If your own city shows a dash in the table above, the next town over is worth the search before you order a folding e-bike or any other model online.

New Jersey eBike Law — 2026 Quick Reference

New Jersey rewrote its e-bike rules in January 2026. P.L.2025, c.285 (S4834) was approved on January 19, 2026 and took effect that day (§ 13), and it sorts every e-bike into one of three statutory categories in place of the Class 1, 2 and 3 labels (NJ MVC, read October 14, 2026).

Every category needs a license and a registration; the table gives each category's statutory test and whether it needs insurance.

Category The statutory test Insurance
Low-speed electric bicycle Pedal assist only, assist ends at 20 mph, no throttle No
Motorized bicycle Any throttle up to 28 mph, or pedal assist between 21 and 28 mph Yes
Electric motorized bicycle Motor over 750 watts and able to pass 28 mph Yes

The act has no helmet clause, so the helmet duty comes from older statutes: riders under 17 on a low-speed e-bike, and every operator of a motorized bicycle (helmet rules by category). The top tier counts as a motorcycle in the Code's definitions (R.S. 39:1-1 as amended, § 1), so it follows motorcycle rules.

The named trap: a bike sold nationally as "Class 2," with a throttle, lands in New Jersey's motorized bicycle tier, insurance included, whatever the sticker on the frame says. New Jersey asks for a license and registration on every e-bike and insurance on motorized bicycles (NJ MVC). New York and Pennsylvania ask for none of the three on a Class 1, 2 or 3 e-bike, and so does Delaware at 750 watts or less.

You must be at least 15 and hold either an e-bike license or a valid driver license (NJ MVC). At 17 or older with a driver license you already qualify; at 15 or 16 you need a motorized bicycle license or permit (P.L.2025, c.285 § 5). To register, you complete Form BA-49EB with proof of ownership, then put the MVC's license-plate stickers on both sides of your front fork (NJ MVC).

The six-month window to get the license, registration and insurance closed on July 19, 2026 (§ 11); the MVC's own page headlines the new requirements as "effective July 2026." The fee waiver runs longer: the MVC must waive the examination, registration and licensing fees for one year, through January 19, 2027 (§ 10), so registering a low-speed or motorized bicycle costs nothing in fees today.

An officer can ask you for the papers, and the act attaches these consequences to them:

What the act covers What it says Where
The papers The driver license, the insurance identification card and the registration certificate must be in the operator's possession whenever the motor is engaged on a public highway, and anyone violating the rule "shall be subject to a fine not exceeding $50" § 5(e)
The registration's term The certificate becomes void on the last day of the 11th calendar month after the month it was issued § 6
The registration's risk The Commission's chief administrator "may suspend or revoke a registration for any violation of this act or any of the rules promulgated hereunder" § 6
The state's count From January 19, 2027 the Commission and the Department of Transportation report to the Legislature each year on the fees collected and "any civil penalties assessed" under N.J.S.A. 39:4-14.3, the statute that carries the fine § 9

If you show the municipal judge that the papers were valid on the day you were charged, the judge may dismiss the charge, though the judge may impose court costs (§ 5(e)). The MVC's page says only motorized bicycles need insurance (NJ MVC), so ask the shop which papers your bike's category calls for.

The online sales ban most buyers miss

Section 12 of the act says that for one year from the act's effective date, "no person shall sell, or offer for sale, on the Internet any electric motorized bicycle": the top tier, over 750 watts and able to pass 28 mph. The ban runs through January 19, 2027 and does not name the low-speed or motorized-bicycle tiers.

Section 7(a) adds a duty that falls on the seller: "all sellers of low-speed electric bicycles, motorized bicycles, and electric motorized bicycles shall make the applicable registration forms available to individuals purchasing such bicycles." A New Jersey shop that sells you a bike is where the state expects the paperwork to start.

New Jersey e-bike incentives

New Jersey has no statewide e-bike purchase rebate that we could find. The New Jersey Clean Energy Program's list of programs and its Charge Up New Jersey page, the state's incentive for electric cars, name no e-bike incentive (read October 14, 2026).

One bill would create one. Assembly Bill A3925, pre-filed for the 2026 session by Assemblymen Karabinchak, Kennedy and Moen, would have the Board of Public Utilities pay residents up to $2,000, never more than half the price, toward a new low-speed e-bike that costs at least $1,000 and meets UL 2849.

Its § 1(c)(2) makes a rebate available "only to a resident of the State who makes an in-person purchase," so a bike you order online would not qualify. It is a bill, not a program: check the Legislature's page for A3925 for its current status before you plan a purchase around it.

Bottom line The state's Clean Energy Program pages name no e-bike incentive, and the one bill that would create one, A3925, would pay only for an in-person purchase, which is one more reason to know the shops near you.

Read before you buy. A bike sold as "Class 2" or "Class 3" elsewhere is not automatically its New Jersey equivalent — the throttle and the assist-cutoff speed decide the category, and the category decides whether you owe insurance. Ask the shop which of New Jersey's three statutory categories the bike you want falls into before you register it.

The New Jersey e-bike law guide covers the helmet rule, county park ordinances and the full compliance checklist you can work through before you register, and the 50-state law table sets New Jersey beside New York and Pennsylvania.

New to the three categories? The buying guide explains classes, motor wattage and UL 2849 certification in plain terms, so you walk into a New Jersey shop already knowing which category you want.

Frequently Asked Questions — New Jersey eBike Shops

Where can you buy an e-bike in New Jersey?

At any of the 100 storefronts listed here; start with the town on your own mailing address. Jersey City and Ocean City each have 3, the most of any community, and 14 of the state's 39 municipalities of 50,000 or more have at least one. If you buy in a shop, the paperwork can start at the counter: § 7 requires every seller of an e-bike to make the registration forms available to the buyer.

Yes. P.L.2025, c.285 makes e-bikes legal in three categories: low-speed electric bicycles (pedal assist only, 20 mph cutoff), motorized bicycles (any throttle, or pedal assist from 21 to 28 mph) and electric motorized bicycles (over 750 watts and able to pass 28 mph). Every category needs a license and a registration; the last two need insurance too, and the top one follows motorcycle rules. The category breakdown has the detail you need.

Do you need a license to ride an e-bike in New Jersey?

Yes, you cannot ride one without a license. Every operator must be at least 15 and hold either an e-bike license or a valid driver license (NJ MVC). Riders 17 and older with a driver license already qualify; riders 15 and 16 need a motorized bicycle license or permit (§ 5). Keep the papers with you: a rider who breaks the act's rule on carrying them faces a fine not exceeding $50 (§ 5, subsection e.).

Do e-bikes need to be registered in New Jersey?

Yes, every category does, including the low-speed electric bicycle tier that needs no insurance. Registration uses MVC Form BA-49EB plus proof of ownership, and the MVC's license-plate stickers go on both sides of the front fork (NJ MVC). The MVC is waiving examination, registration and licensing fees through January 19, 2027 (§ 10).

A registration expires on the last day of the 11th calendar month after it is issued, and the Commission's chief administrator may suspend or revoke it for any violation of the act (§ 6).

Do you need insurance for an e-bike in New Jersey?

Only for a motorized bicycle: any bike with a throttle, or with pedal assist faster than 20 mph. A low-speed electric bicycle (pedal assist only, 20 mph cutoff) needs no insurance but still needs a registration (NJ MVC). The top category is a motorcycle under the Code's definitions and follows motorcycle rules.

Why can't I buy some e-bikes online in New Jersey?

Only the top category is barred, and only through January 19, 2027. Section 12 bars selling, or offering for sale, on the Internet any electric motorized bicycle: a machine over 750 watts that can pass 28 mph. The low-speed and motorized bicycle categories are not named, and a store can sell any category in person. Whether a retailer ships a given model to your New Jersey address is that retailer's own policy, so ask before you order.

Where are the e-bike shops in Jersey City, Newark and Hoboken?

Jersey City has 3 verified stores: Garcia Brothers E-biking on Monticello Ave, The Bike Hub on Monticello Ave and The Jersey City Bicycle Company on Pavonia Avenue. Newark, the state's largest city at 317,303 people, has one, Newark Bicycle Shop on Branford Pl. Hoboken has one, Fly E-Bike on 4th St.

Where are the e-bike shops in Cherry Hill, Princeton, Montclair and Cape May County?

Cherry Hill has one, Trek Bicycle on Kings Hwy N Ste 12. Princeton has one, Jay's Cycles on Nassau Street. Montclair has 2 verified stores: Diamond Cycle on Bloomfield Avenue and Montclair Bikery on Valley Road. Cape May County carries 9 across 7 towns: Ocean City (3), and one each in Avalon, Cape May, North Wildwood, Sea Isle City, Stone Harbor and Woodbine.

The Bottom Line

New Jersey's e-bike counters are spread over 89 communities, and they do not track the state's biggest cities: 14 of the 39 municipalities of 50,000 or more have a verified store, and 84 of the 100 stores stand in smaller municipalities. Jersey City's 3 storefronts outnumber the 2 in Newark, Paterson, Elizabeth, Edison and Trenton combined, even though those five cities hold more than 800,000 people between them.

Bottom line A local shop settles New Jersey's paperwork in person: the registration form, the category call, the fork stickers. Section 12 bars only the top category from being sold on the Internet, so the low-speed and motorized bicycle categories can still be bought online, and Redtail's commuter and city e-bikes ship free anywhere in the contiguous United States (shipping policy).

A shop suits you if you want the registration forms handed to you at the counter, the bike fitted, and a mechanic close by.

Buying online suits you if the bike you want is not on a floor near you. Check the category first. In the top tier, a motor over 750 watts that can pass 28 mph, an Internet sale is barred through January 19, 2027.

Why buy from Redtail when a shop is a long drive away? Shipping is free on every e-bike we sell within the contiguous United States, which includes your New Jersey address (shipping policy), and at checkout on October 14, 2026, you can pay by card or with Google Pay.

If a bike will not power on, will not charge or shows an error code, the maker's warranty covers it and our U.S. team coordinates the repair or replacement with the maker (refund policy); orders, shipping and warranty questions go to support@redtailebikes.com.

Still deciding? When you're ready to ask before you buy, email sales@redtailebikes.com, our address for pre-purchase questions, with where you ride in New Jersey; we typically answer within one business day (contact page), and a question commits you to nothing.

Shortlist before you shop. The buying guide sorts its picks by how you ride and explains the classes, what to spend and UL 2849 certification, so you can narrow your choice before you visit a New Jersey shop or order online.

Wherever you buy, read the category off the manufacturer's spec sheet before you register (NJ MVC), and keep Assembly Bill A3925 in view if you are weighing the purchase on a rebate that does not exist yet.

Sources, limitations and how this page was verified

How the count was reached

Each storefront is counted once: 100 verified storefronts, all listed on this page.

The candidate pool. OpenStreetMap returned 91 entries tagged as bicycle shops in New Jersey; dropping unnamed entries and merging duplicates left 86, and 50 of those list a website. Seven makers gave 143 storefront rows: the dealer maps of Bosch, Aventon, Giant, Trek, Specialized, Velotric and Pedego.

A Google Maps search covered bike shops in all 378 municipalities of 5,000 or more and in all 21 counties, plus "electric bike shop" searches in the 109 municipalities of 25,000 or more: 508 searches that surfaced 212 businesses no source above had carried. Answers from two AI search engines to the 16 questions people type most added 11 more names, and each was checked like the rest.

The checks. Each candidate's own website was read for e-bikes offered for sale in the shop's own words: a price, a shop category or a sentence saying the shop sells them. An e-bike named only in a repair line, a rental price, a ride announcement, a law article or a parts list does not count, nor does a motor-vehicle dealer's e-bike page.

A site that could not be read was tried again through a real browser and an archive copy.

A maker's dealer map is the other way in: a store counts when the Bosch, Aventon, Velotric and Giant map lists its address as an e-bike dealer (Trek, Specialized and Pedego maps supplied candidates, and none of them carries a count). Google Maps was then read for each store: all 100 resolved to one business at the listed address that Google shows as open. A store Google shows closed, even for the season, is not counted.

How to read the listings

Each listing ends with a grade that tells you what confirmed the store sells e-bikes; there are three.

Site checked covers 69 of the 100: the shop's own website offered e-bikes for sale in its own words.

Chain site checked covers 7: one website serves several storefronts (for example Tuckahoe Bike Shop, Bikeland and Fly E-Bike), so it shows the business sells e-bikes while the listing shows which store you are visiting.

A maker's dealer map covers 24: a maker names the store as one of its authorized e-bike dealers, and the grade links you to that maker's locator or the store's own page there. Of those 24, 22 have a website that did not show e-bikes for sale in its own words (or could not be read) and 2 have no website of their own, so the maker's map is the evidence.

Bar chart of how the 100 listings were verified: site checked 69, chain site checked 7, a maker's dealer map 24.

A phone number is printed where the sources agree or only one gives it; where a maker's roster and Google Maps disagree, the shop's own site settles which, and a listing goes without a number when the site settles neither. Whatever the grade, ring the shop before you set out on a long drive.

Why the map is thin where it is thin

OpenStreetMap carries roughly 35% of the 100 storefronts listed here; built from the map alone, this page would miss the rest. The seven makers' dealer rosters and the statewide Google Maps search each surfaced stores the others did not.

Closures were settled on Google Maps and on the shops' own sites: 10 storefronts that a maker's roster or another source still listed are closed (9 permanently, 1 for the season). Rental-only businesses, motor-vehicle dealers, repair-only shops and mobile services are left out.

Limitations

  1. 97 candidates remain open leads, named in the research files and not counted: 66 with sites that name no e-bike for sale, 17 that could not be confirmed (a site that could not be read or forwards to another business, or no store named at that address) and 14 with no website of their own. Each is a lead worth a phone call, not a finding that the business does not sell e-bikes.
  2. Named and not counted: 10 closed storefronts (9 permanently, 1 for the season), 2 rental-only businesses, 7 businesses that are not bicycle stores (vehicle dealers, repair-only and mobile services), and 3 duplicate listings.
  3. Municipality lines are the Census Bureau's. A store counts toward a row of the coverage table only if it stands inside that municipality's own line.
  4. One incentive bill is pending. Assembly Bill A3925 would create a statewide e-bike rebate. This page rests on the bill's introduced text; the New Jersey Legislature's page for A3925 is the place to check its current action.
  5. This is a floor, not a census. A shop that is on none of OpenStreetMap, a maker's dealer map or Google Maps would not be found here. A Google Maps search by name can also return a same-named shop in another state, so every address was checked for New Jersey before a store was counted.
  6. Demand evidence. The questions this page answers come from 609 Google and Bing completions and related searches, 50 r/newjersey post titles and 7 People Also Ask questions read on October 12 and 14, 2026, and from two AI search engines' answers to 16 questions on October 14, 2026 (the two engines answered 14 and 8 of them). Four other engines returned no answer. No search-volume figure is used.
  7. What would age this page. It is re-checked in April 2027, and sooner if a listed shop closes or moves, if the Legislature amends P.L.2025, c.285 or lets the fee waiver and the online-sales bar lapse on January 19, 2027, if Assembly Bill A3925 passes, or when the Census Bureau publishes new municipal estimates.
  8. Distances are straight lines. The nearest-store table measures from the Census Bureau's point for each municipality to each store's coordinates, and a municipality's point is one spot in a place that can span miles. Two stores whose addresses the Census geocoder could not match are placed by an alternate spelling of the street and by their town's Census point, and neither is the nearest store to any municipality in the table.
