How we verified this directory — Milad Ghobadibeygvand, BScN
Candidates came from OpenStreetMap, seven makers' dealer maps, the City of Bloomington's voucher roster, a Google Maps search of all 92 Indiana counties and every town of 5,000 or more, and AI search engines' answers. Each was checked against the shop's own website and its Google Maps listing.
A store counts when its own site offers e-bikes for sale or a maker's dealer map lists its address, and Maps shows it open. Rental-only outfits, repair-only shops, vehicle dealers and closed stores are left out.
Verified October 15 and 16, 2026; due again April 2027.
Quick Answer
There are 85 verified e-bike shops in Indiana as of October 16, 2026, in 54 communities across 38 of the state's 92 counties. Inside city limits, Indianapolis has the most, 9, then Fort Wayne with 6.
In Indiana an e-bike is a bicycle with a motor of not greater than 750 watts, built as one of three classes (IC 9-13-2-49.2), and no e-bike rebate appears in the state's incentive list (Alternative Fuels Data Center) or on the websites of the 114 Indiana power companies that could be read (rebates).
If no shop is near you, every e-bike we sell ships free within the contiguous United States; the rules for where you may ride are on our Indiana e-bike law page.
Indiana's e-bike counters are not spread the way its people are. Marion County and the eight counties of Central Indiana around it hold 31.0% of Hoosiers (Census Bureau 2024 estimates) and 24.7% of the stores below, a smaller share of the stores than of the people. South Bend, Elkhart and North Central Indiana has 9.1% of the residents and 18.8% of the stores, 2.5 per 100,000 people against 1.2 statewide.
Every listing below names the street, a phone number where a source confirms one, and the check that verified the store, so you know what you are driving to. The listings are grouped by the twelve regions of the state's Department of Workforce Development, which hold all 92 counties between them (DWD regional map), then by town.
Region 12 is Marion County alone, which the department's Indianapolis workforce board serves; the department's monthly labor market review for Economic Growth Region 5 counts Marion with the eight counties around it, so Central Indiana below means those eight and Indianapolis is its own region.
The cover shows a vista over the wooded hills of Brown County State Park, which the Department of Natural Resources describes as "rugged hills, ridges, and fog-shrouded ravines" and calls "a traditional fall color hot spot" (Indiana DNR, read October 15, 2026).
Indiana's eBike Map, City by City
The table lists all 21 Indiana cities of 50,000 or more residents in the Census Bureau's 2024 estimates, with Indianapolis counted by the part of the consolidated city outside its excluded cities and towns, the figure the Census files as the city. "Verified stores" counts stores inside the city limits; "Open leads" counts businesses that showed up as candidates and could not be confirmed.

Sixteen of the 21 cities (Census Bureau 2024 estimates) have at least one verified store inside their limits. The five that do not, Hammond, Noblesville, Greenwood, Gary and Jeffersonville, each have one within 9 miles; the nearest-store table names it.
Those 21 cities hold 36.7% of Hoosiers (Census Bureau 2024 estimates) and 41 of the 85 stores (48.2%). The other 44 stand in smaller towns and on unincorporated county land, which is why a list of the big cities alone would miss them.
Per resident, counting each region's counties as the state's regional map groups them, the most stores are in South Bend, Elkhart and North Central Indiana and in Bloomington and South Central Indiana, 2.5 per 100,000 people each, against 1.2 statewide, and Fort Wayne and Northeast Indiana follows with 1.9. The fewest per resident are in Northwest Indiana and in Muncie, Richmond and East Central Indiana, 0.6 each.

Bottom line Start with your city in the table, then your region in the listings. Whichever region you live in, check the nearest-store table before you plan a trip, and if you are far from a counter you can order a commuter e-bike online.
Indiana eBike Law — 2026 Quick Reference
Indiana treats your e-bike as a bicycle, so you need no driver's license, registration, title or insurance to ride one (IC 9-21-11-13.1). The section's own history line shows its last amendment was in 2020, so the rules below are the ones in force on October 15, 2026, and the rules that change from place to place are set by whoever owns the ground you ride on.
- What qualifies. A bicycle with fully operable pedals and an electric motor with "a power output not greater than seven hundred fifty (750) watts", built as a Class 1, 2 or 3 (IC 9-13-2-49.2). A motor rated at exactly 750 watts qualifies.
- The three classes. A Class 1 assists only while you pedal and stops at 20 mph; a Class 2 can move on the motor alone and stops at 20 mph; a Class 3 assists only while you pedal and stops at 28 mph (Class 1, Class 2, Class 3).
- Where Class 1 and 2 ride. Wherever a bicycle may. On a path, the statute says: "Unless otherwise specified by a statute, rule, or local ordinance, a Class 1 or Class 2 electric bicycle may be operated on any bicycle path or multipurpose path where bicycles are permitted" (IC 9-21-11-13.1(k)(1)).
- Where Class 3 rides. On a road like any bicycle. On a path only if the path is within or adjacent to a highway or roadway, or the local authority or state agency in charge of that path authorizes Class 3 ((k)(2)).
- Age. Nobody under 15 may operate a Class 3, and a rider under 15 may sit on one as a passenger if it was designed to carry one ((k)(3) and (4)). The section sets no age floor for Class 1 or 2.
- Helmets. Anyone under 18 who operates or rides as a passenger on a Class 3 must wear a properly fitted, fastened helmet ((k)(5)). The section requires none for a Class 1 or 2 at any age.
- The label. Since January 1, 2020 the maker or distributor must put a permanent label on every e-bike showing its class, its top assisted speed and its rated wattage ((f)), and a change to speed or motor engagement needs a new label ((g)). Look for it before you pay.
- State parks. The Department of Natural Resources lets all three classes use roads inside its properties, Class 1 and 2 use paved, concrete or gravel trails, and only Class 1 use natural-surface trails where bicycles are allowed (DNR e-bike rules, read October 15, 2026).
- National forest. The Forest Service classes e-bikes as motor vehicles on the Hoosier National Forest, allows them only where motor vehicles are allowed and prohibits them on non-motorized trails (Hoosier National Forest).
- Your city. A town may write its own rule on the paths you ride. Carmel did, in ordinance D-2796-25: all three classes where bicycles are allowed, a helmet for every rider under 16, no one under 15 on a Class 3, and "E-Moto Devices" barred from sidewalks and multi-use trails including the greenways. Waynetown's Ordinance 2025-003, adopted October 8, 2025, keeps e-bike and e-scooter riders off the sidewalks of its downtown stretch of Washington Street, keeps riders under 18 off the state and U.S. highways inside the town, and allows no passenger on any class.
Bottom line Match the class to the ground. A Class 1 is the only class Indiana's state parks allow on their natural-surface trails; a Class 2 or Class 3 is welcome on roads and paved trails; and on a path away from a road a Class 3 needs someone's permission, so ask the town or park before you buy.
What breaking a rule costs
| The rule you break | What the law says it costs |
|---|---|
| Any rule in Indiana's bicycle chapter, e-bike rules included | A Class C infraction (IC 9-21-11-14); a court may enter a judgment of up to $500 for one, with lower ceilings for a moving violation (IC 34-28-5-4) |
| Breaking Carmel's micromobility ordinance, first offense | $100 (ordinance D-2796-25) |
| Second offense in a rolling 365 days | $150 (same ordinance) |
| Third and every later offense in 365 days | $250 and impoundment of the device (same ordinance) |
| Breaking Waynetown's ordinance, first offense | A verbal or written warning, or a $25 fine (Ordinance 2025-003, § 4) |
| Fourth and every later offense under it | A warning, or a $1,000 fine (same ordinance) |
Carmel's bike-ordinances page lists D-2796-25 as the city's micromobility rule, but the link on it labeled as that ordinance's first amendment opens a 2013 bicycle ordinance instead (read October 15, 2026), so read the ordinance itself before you ride the Monon.
Rebates and tax credits
Indiana has no statewide e-bike rebate or tax credit that we found: the federal Alternative Fuels Data Center lists the state's incentives for electric vehicles and their fuels, and none of its entries covers a bicycle (read October 15, 2026).
The one local program on record is the City of Bloomington's pilot voucher, worth up to $2,000 for qualified low-income Bloomington residents at participating shops. The city's program page states that it is no longer taking 2026 applications, because the number of applicants received by February 2, 2026 exceeds the budget, which it puts at $15,000 and seven vouchers.
No e-bike rebate appears on the websites of the 114 Indiana electric utilities that could be read on October 15, 2026 (85 in full, 29 in part), of the 119 that EIA Form 861 lists. The other 5 could not be read, so for them this page says nothing either way. A program can start at any time, so ask your power company before you buy.
Class decides where you may ride. The buying guide sets out what separates a Class 1 from a Class 2 and a Class 3 and which riding each one suits, so you can tell a counter which one your Indiana routes call for.
Read the buying guideE-Bike Shops in Indiana, Region by Region
A mailing address does not tell you whose rules apply. A town's own ordinance stops at its line, and the state's rule for paths gives way to a local one (IC 9-21-11-13.1(k)(1)): 15 of the 85 stores below stand outside the town on their address, among them a Granger address in Mishawaka and an Indianapolis address in Lawrence.
A store sits under its mailing town unless that town is one of the 21 big cities and the store stands outside it; then it sits under the place it stands in.

Where can you buy an e-bike in Indiana?
At any of the 85 storefronts listed on this page, in 54 communities across 38 of Indiana's 92 counties. Start with the region you ride in. Inside city limits, Indianapolis has the most, 9, then Fort Wayne with 6. If no store is near you, every e-bike we sell ships free within the contiguous United States.
Where are the e-bike shops in Indianapolis?
Nine of the 85 listed stores stand inside Indianapolis's city limits, more than inside any other Indiana city, and Marion County, the department's region 12, lists 10 in all. The eight counties around it, Central Indiana, list 11 more: Carmel and Westfield have 2 each. The nearest-store table covers the suburbs with none inside their limits.
Where are the e-bike shops in Fort Wayne, Evansville and South Bend?
Inside their city limits, Fort Wayne has six, Evansville has one and South Bend has two. The region listings name each store's street and what verified it; the nearest-store table gives you the distance from any of the 21 big cities that has none.
Are e-bikes legal in Indiana?
Yes. Indiana defines an electric bicycle as a bicycle with working pedals and a motor with a power output "not greater than seven hundred fifty (750) watts" that meets the requirements of a Class 1, Class 2 or Class 3, and it regulates that machine as a bicycle rather than a motor vehicle (IC 9-13-2-49.2; IC 9-21-11-13.1).
Check the label before you buy: it must state the class, the top assisted speed and the wattage.
Are Class 3 e-bikes legal in Indiana?
Yes, with three conditions. You must be 15 or older to operate one, anyone under 18 on one wears a helmet, and off the road a Class 3 may use a path only where the path runs within or beside a highway or roadway or the local authority or state agency in charge of it has authorized Class 3 (IC 9-21-11-13.1(k)). A Class 1 or Class 2 has none of those three conditions.
Do you need a license, registration or a helmet to ride an e-bike in Indiana?
You need no license, registration, title or insurance, because the law exempts e-bikes from the motor-vehicle statutes (IC 9-21-11-13.1(d) and (e)). A helmet is required by that section only for a Class 3 rider or passenger under 18, though towns such as Carmel require one of every rider under 16 on any micromobility device (ordinance D-2796-25).
Are e-bikes allowed in Indiana state parks?
On park roads, all three classes. On paved, concrete or gravel trails, Class 1 and Class 2. On natural-surface trails, only Class 1, and only where bicycles are allowed, so a throttle bike stays off the dirt (Indiana DNR, read October 15, 2026). The two motorized properties, Interlake and Redbird, allow Class 1 only.
Can you ride an e-bike on the sidewalk in Indiana?
The state's code does not say. Its bicycle chapter mentions a sidewalk in only two sections: to bar motor driven cycles from one (IC 9-21-11-12) and to let an electric foot scooter be parked on one (IC 9-21-11-13.6(d)); it sets no rule for riding a bicycle or an e-bike on a sidewalk, so the question is your town's.
Carmel's ordinance lets micromobility devices, its category for e-bikes and e-scooters, use public sidewalks "in a careful and prudent manner" at no more than 15 miles an hour, and where a sign prohibits it the rider must dismount and walk (ordinance D-2796-25).
Waynetown's ordinance bars e-bike and e-scooter operators from the sidewalks of its downtown, Washington Street from Bratton Road to Carolyn Street (Ordinance 2025-003). Read the signs and your town's code before you ride one.
Does Indiana have an e-bike rebate?
Not from the state that we found. None of the entries in the federal Alternative Fuels Data Center's Indiana list covers a bicycle (read October 15, 2026). The City of Bloomington ran a pilot voucher for low-income residents, up to $2,000, and the city's voucher program page states that 2026 applications are closed.
No e-bike rebate appears on the websites of the 114 electric utilities that could be read on October 15, 2026, of the 119 that EIA lists.
The Bottom Line
Indiana has 85 verified e-bike storefronts in 54 communities, and 16 of the 21 big cities have one inside their limits.
The law asks for no license or registration and sets the motor at not greater than 750 watts (IC 9-13-2-49.2), and it keeps a Class 3 for riders 15 and older (IC 9-21-11-13.1(k)(3)). For a store across the state line, start from the U.S. e-bike shop directory.
Bottom line Find the region you ride in, call the nearest store before you drive, and ask your town or park what it allows on the path you have in mind.
Go to a shop if you want to test the fit before you pay, have a mechanic set the brakes and the torque arm, and know whose counter to return to when a spoke or a cable needs attention.
Order online if the model you want is on no floor near you. Read the class and the wattage off the maker's spec sheet first: Indiana's definition stops at a motor with a power output "not greater than seven hundred fifty (750) watts" (IC 9-13-2-49.2).
Why buy from us when the nearest counter is a county away. Every e-bike we sell ships free within the contiguous United States, Indiana included (shipping policy), and at checkout on October 16, 2026 you could pay by card or with Google Pay.
The warranty is the maker's, and we handle the claim for you: if your bike will not power on, will not charge or shows an error code, our U.S. team coordinates the repair or replacement remotely (refund policy). Questions about an order, a delivery or a warranty go to support@redtailebikes.com.
Not sure which class fits your routes? Send sales@redtailebikes.com the town you ride in and the trails you have in mind. The team usually answers within one business day (contact page), and asking costs you nothing.
Commuting by bike? The commuter guide shortlists bikes for the daily ride, from an under-$1,500 ladder to lightweight and long-range models, so you arrive at a counter already knowing what to ask for.
See the commuter picksBefore you pay anywhere, find the permanent label that every e-bike sold in Indiana since January 1, 2020 must carry, and read the class, the top assisted speed and the wattage off it (IC 9-21-11-13.1(f)).
If you know an Indiana shop that sells e-bikes and is missing here, or you find an error, write to sales@redtailebikes.com; verified corrections are published. Last verified October 16, 2026.

How the count was reached
Every storefront appears once: 85 verified storefronts, all of them listed on this page.
Where the candidates came from. OpenStreetMap holds 75 entries tagged as bicycle shops in Indiana; with unnamed entries dropped and duplicates merged, 73 remained, 32 of them with a website. Seven makers' dealer locators supplied 88 storefront rows: Giant, Aventon, Bosch, Trek, Specialized, Velotric and SWFT (at Best Buy). The City of Bloomington's voucher program page names two participating shops.
Three more makers' locators were read on October 16, 2026: Lectric's lists five Indiana locations and Magnum's three, every one a store counted here except a marina where Lectric offers test rides, and QuietKat's own locator lists no Indiana stocking dealers.
| What the Google Maps search covered | Places searched |
|---|---|
| Counties | all 92 |
| Incorporated places of 5,000 or more | 126 |
| Townships of 10,000 or more outside any city or town | 27 |
| The largest unincorporated community | 1 |
| ZIP areas of Indianapolis and Fort Wayne | 52 |
| "Electric bike shop" searches, places of 25,000 or more | 40 |
A Google Maps search asked for bike shops in each of those places: 396 searches, which with their follow-up reads turned up 97 candidates to check.
Answers from three AI search engines to the 16 questions people searched named three businesses that no source above carried, and each was read on Google Maps: one was an open Indiana business and was checked like the rest, one was filed by Google under a category other than a bicycle shop and one returned only a list of places.
Between them, the Maps search and the AI engines supplied 11 of the 85 storefronts listed here that no other source had.
The replies under the 22 Reddit posts the demand harvest kept were read too, 254 comments, for shops riders name; they named one business no other source carried, and Google Maps marks it permanently closed.
What counted. Each candidate's own website had to offer e-bikes for sale in the shop's own words, through a price, a shop category or a sentence that says so. An e-bike that appears only in a repair menu, a rental rate, a ride announcement, a law article or a parts list does not qualify, and neither does a powersports or golf-cart dealer's e-bike page.
When a site would not load, it was tried again in a real browser, through a text reader and in an archived copy. Every open lead with a website of its own was also read through the pages its own sitemap lists, so a shop whose e-bikes sit only in its online catalog is counted too.
On October 16, 2026 every open lead whose site had named no e-bike was read again page by page, 1,686 pages across 39 sites, for e-bike words and the names of e-bike models; three that are not a shop's own site (a university bike hub, a city bike share and a chain's store finder) were left out and two could not be read that way and stay open leads.
Then each of the 41 leads with no readable site was searched by name and looked up on Google Maps:
- Two had sites after all, and neither names an e-bike.
- One had moved to a store listed above.
- One was the same shop under a second name.
- Google Maps marks one permanently closed.
The searches also found an e-bike shop in Indianapolis's Bottleworks District that no other source carried, and it is marked permanently closed too.
A maker's dealer map is the second way in: a store counts when the Aventon, Velotric, Giant, Bosch and SWFT map lists its address as an e-bike dealer. Then each store's own Google Maps listing was read: all 85 resolved to one business at the listed address that Google shows as open, and a store Google shows closed, even for the season, is left out.
How to read the listings
The grade at the end of each listing tells you what confirmed that the store sells e-bikes.
Site checked covers 54 of the 85: the shop's own website offers e-bikes for sale.
Chain site checked covers 7: one website serves several storefronts (for example Bicycle Garage Indy, Pumpkinvine Cyclery and Scheller's Fitness & Cycling), so it proves the business sells e-bikes, and the listing tells you which branch you are visiting.
A maker's dealer map covers 24: a maker lists the store as an authorized e-bike dealer, and the grade links to that maker's locator. Of those 24, 22 have a website that did not show e-bikes for sale in the shop's own words, or could not be read, and 2 have only a social-media page; for each, the maker's listing is the evidence, and Google Maps shows the store open.

A phone number appears where the sources agree or only one gives one; where a maker's roster and Google Maps disagree, the shop's own site decides, and a listing carries no number when the site settles nothing. Call ahead before you drive, whatever the grade.
Why the map is thin where it is thin
OpenStreetMap carries 46 of the 85 storefronts listed here, so a directory built from the map alone would miss 39 of them. The makers' dealer maps and the statewide Google Maps search each found stores the other sources did not.
Google Maps marked 25 of the businesses the search turned up as closed, and 12 of the candidates above as closed for good or for the season; none of them is counted.
Limitations
- 81 candidates remain open leads, named in the research files and not counted: 45 with sites that name no e-bike for sale, 6 that could not be confirmed (one whose website's domain no longer resolves, one whose only listed page is its maker's dealer locator, three whose only listed sites are social networks' front pages and one whose address its own site's list of stores does not carry) and 30 with no website of their own. Each one deserves a phone call before you rule it out; none is a finding that the business does not sell e-bikes.
- Named and not counted: 12 listings that are not bicycle stores (5 motorcycle shops, 3 vehicle dealers, 1 marina where a maker offers test rides, 1 bicycle museum, 1 store in another trade and 1 wholesaler or maker's office), 2 stores listed twice under two names, 2 old addresses of shops listed at their current ones, 2 rental or tour outfits and 1 shop that says it does not work on e-bikes.
- City lines are the Census Bureau's. A store counts toward a row of the coverage table only if it stands inside that city's limits, read from its coordinates, so a store with an Indianapolis or Fort Wayne mailing address can sit outside the city.
- Local rules were not surveyed beyond Carmel. The statute lets a path's rules be "otherwise specified by a statute, rule, or local ordinance" (IC 9-21-11-13.1(k)(1)), so each of Indiana's cities and towns may have its own; this page cites the state code, the Department of Natural Resources, the Forest Service and Carmel's ordinance, and the link on Carmel's ordinance page labeled as that ordinance's first amendment opened the city's 2013 bicycle ordinance on October 15, 2026.
- This is a floor, not a census. A shop that appears on no maker's dealer map, not in OpenStreetMap and not in Google Maps would not be found here. A Maps search by name can also return a same-named shop in a neighboring state, so every address was checked for Indiana before a store was counted.
- Demand evidence. The questions this page answers come from Google and Bing autocomplete, Google's related searches and Google's People Also Ask read on October 15, 2026, and from AI search engines' answers to 16 questions on October 15, 2026: Google AI Mode answered all 16, Gemini answered all 16 (one of them cut off) and Perplexity answered 13. ChatGPT, Bing's Copilot Search and Brave gave no answer that could be read from here. No search-volume figure is used, because the paid keyword tool returned no data for this page.
- The regions have two maps. The Department of Workforce Development's regional map draws Marion County as region 12 on its own, while its monthly labor market review for Economic Growth Region 5 tables Marion with the eight counties around it; this page groups by the map. Eleven of the department's twelve regional reviews, read on October 15, 2026, table exactly the counties the map assigns; region 5's adds Marion.
- What would age this page. It is due for re-checking in April 2027, and sooner if a listed shop closes or moves, if the General Assembly amends the sections cited above, if Carmel or another city restricts e-bikes by ordinance, or when the Census Bureau publishes new local estimates.
- Distances are straight lines. The nearest-store table measures from each city's Census point to each store's coordinates; the road distance is longer.
