How we verified this directory — Milad Ghobadibeygvand, BScN

The City of Boston's e-bike voucher list, seven makers' dealer maps, four store locators, the Massachusetts directory, OpenStreetMap, 206 Google Maps searches, 16 answer-engine questions and 16 Reddit threads named 237 possible e-bike sellers. The Census geocoder placed 223 of them against the city's boundary and the City's neighborhood map, and the websites of those in or near Boston were opened.

A store makes the list when its own site sells e-bikes, a maker's dealer map names it or the City lists it as a voucher shop, and its Google Maps listing shows it open. Closed shops, rentals, mobile mechanics, clubs and stores naming no e-bike stay off. Verified October 29, 2026.

Quick Answer

Eight e-bike shops in Boston sell from storefronts inside the city, verified October 29, 2026. Urban Cycles on Atlantic Avenue and Fly E-Bike Boston on West Street are nearest City Hall, 0.3 and 0.4 miles away. Fourteen more stand within 2.4 miles past the line, Landry's "Boston" store among them: it sits in Brookline.

Massachusetts recognizes only Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes, with motors of 750 watts or less and assistance that stops at 20 mph, and keeps them off sidewalks. If no floor here has your bike, every pick in the Boston e-bike guide ships free within the contiguous United States, and the Massachusetts e-bike law page has the long version.

In this directory, Boston is the City of Boston: 672,973 people in the Census Bureau's 2025 estimate, on 48.3 square miles of land (2025 Gazetteer). Cambridge, Somerville and Brookline are separate municipalities; their stores follow the eight.

The T, the Commuter Rail and Bluebikes — Taking an eBike on Transit

Fold your bike, and the T takes it anytime. "You can bring folding bikes and folding micromobility devices on all services at all times if they're completely folded," says the MBTA's bikes page, read October 29, 2026, which counts e-bikes as micromobility devices. If yours does not fold, you face rush hours, one line and three platforms.

Service What the MBTA's page says With a full-size e-bike
Red and Orange lines Weekdays "Yes, except 7 – 10 AM and 4 – 7 PM"; weekends yes Ride outside those hours
Blue Line Inbound "Yes, except 7 – 9 AM"; outbound "Yes, except 4 – 6 PM" Check your direction first
Green Line and Mattapan Trolley No, weekdays or weekends Take a bus rack, or fold
Buses and the Silver Line "Yes, on bike racks," every day Rack it at the front
Commuter Rail Greenbush, Kingston, Fall River/New Bedford and Fairmount trains "at all times"; other trains on weekends, and on weekdays where the timetable shows the bike symbol Read the timetable first
Ferries "All types of bikes and micromobility devices are allowed on ferries at all times" Charging on board is not allowed

A bike that does not fold also stays off "the platforms at Park Street, Downtown Crossing, and Government Center."

You can rent an e-bike from Bluebikes in Boston and its neighbors. Its own pricing feed puts an e-bike single ride at "$3.00 unlock fee, $0.33 per minute" (Bluebikes GBFS), and 356 of the system's 628 stations, read October 29, 2026, stand inside Boston (station feed). The City says "Bluebikes ebikes are Class 1, and once riders reach 18 mph, the assistance shuts off" (Boston bike laws).

Riding the Red Line at rush hour? Only a completely folded bike boards then, and the folding guide's 8 picks are sorted by how much space you have to keep one.

Trail Access — the Charles River Paths, the Southwest Corridor and the Neponset

On a state path, your bike's class decides. Most of Boston's long off-street paths belong to the Department of Conservation and Recreation, whose rule lets a Class 1 e-bike ride "on improved DCR trails of 8 feet in width or greater" and allows Class 2 and Class 3 only "where vehicular traffic is permitted" and "in bicycle lanes on DCR roadways" (302 CMR 12.12, text as of October 23, 2026).

On the City's Existing Bike Network 2024 layer, 51.0 miles of paved shared-use path run inside Boston, and DCR owns at least 26.4 of them; 8.2 more carry no owner in the file.

Path Miles inside Boston Owner in the City's file A Class 2 (throttle) e-bike
The Charles River paths (Paul Dudley White and the Charles River Bike Path) 7.5 DCR Off the path, on the road
Boston Harborwalk 6.1 DCR, the City and Massport, in stretches Depends on the stretch
Emerald Necklace Trail 5.1, 1.9 of it natural surface Mostly the City Paved parts, as a bicycle
Southwest Corridor 3.9 DCR Off the path, on the road
Neponset River Trail 3.7 DCR Off the path, on the road

Elsewhere, state law sets the default: a path authority may restrict e-bikes only "after public notice and a public hearing," and a natural-surface trail stays closed to them unless its authority opens it (G.L. c.85 §11B¾(c)–(d)).

Commuting along the Charles? Buy a Class 1 bike: it may use the paved DCR path where it is 8 feet wide or more, and a throttle bike may not.

Massachusetts eBike Laws — What Makes an eBike Legal in Boston

Check the class before you pay. Massachusetts defines an electric bicycle as "a bicycle or tricycle equipped with fully operable pedals and an electric motor of 750 watts or less that meets the requirements of a class 1 electric bicycle or a class 2 electric bicycle" (G.L. c.90 §1). Both classes stop assisting at 20 mph, and the statute defines no Class 3.

Rule The statute's text Where it is
What counts Fully operable pedals, a motor of 750 watts or less, Class 1 or Class 2 c.90 §1
Class 1 Assistance "only when the rider is pedaling," ceasing "when the bicycle reaches the speed of 20 miles per hour" c.90 §1
Class 2 A motor that "may be used exclusively to propel the bicycle," with no assistance at 20 mph c.90 §1
No license "The definition of ''Motor vehicles'' shall not include electric bicycles" c.90 §1
Sidewalks "electric bicycles shall not be ridden or operated on sidewalks" c.85 §11B¾(b)
The label The maker must fix a label with "the classification number, top assisted speed and motor wattage" c.85 §11B¾(f)
Helmets "Any person 16 years of age or younger" riding or carried as a passenger c.85 §11B
Penalties "a fine of not more than twenty dollars", the helmet rule excepted; a rider under 18's bike "may be impounded" for up to fifteen days c.85 §11B

An e-bike rider carries a cyclist's duties too: break a bicycle rule and you face a fine, and if you are under 18, police may impound your bike for up to fifteen days.

Changes are pending, and none is law. S.3168, a committee redraft of bills that include one "relative to class 3 electric bicycles," has sat in Senate Ways and Means since July 6, 2026.

The Senate's economic development bill "also regulates fast e-bikes and scooters with age restrictions and safety standards," says its press release. The two chambers' versions went to a conference committee on July 30, 2026 (H.5576), and no action is recorded since.

At City Hall, two ordinances wait in the Committee on Government Operations, both filed February 9, 2026: Docket #0325, amending the delivery-provider rules in Chapter 17-22, and Docket #0326, an "Ordinance Regulating all E-bikes in the City of Boston."

Seven e-bike rules for Boston: Class 1 or 2 at 750 watts or less, assistance to 20 mph, no sidewalks, Class 1 only on DCR paths 8 feet wide, dirt trails closed, helmets at 16 and under, and folded bikes on the T at all hours

Where to Ride Your eBike in Boston

Start your rides on the separated lanes. Measured on the City's Existing Bike Network 2024, 243.3 miles of bike facilities run inside Boston, among them 73.3 miles of painted lane, 33.4 of separated lane, 10.3 buffered, 48.8 of shared-lane markings and 51.0 of paved path.

Buying your e-bike from us

If none of these floors has the bike you want, we ship it: Redtail's shipping policy promises "free shipping on every electric bike within the contiguous United States." Each order is "dispatched within 1–3 business days of confirmation," and most bikes "arrive within 5–10 business days after dispatch, depending on your location."

Check your box on delivery. How Buying Works says "transit damage has to reach us within 48 hours of delivery and we file the carrier claim for you," and a bike that is "dead on arrival, will not charge, or throws an error code out of the box" goes through the maker's warranty with Redtail coordinating. "Change-of-mind returns are 72 hours, unopened only, at a 15% restocking fee."

You can call Redtail's US line at (213) 444‑4020, and "We typically respond to email within one business day" (contact). Checkout takes Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and the terms of service name the company you are buying from.

Frequently Asked Questions — Boston eBikes

Yes, if your bike meets the state's definition: working pedals, a motor of 750 watts or less and assistance that stops at 20 mph, Class 1 or Class 2 (G.L. c.90 §1). The City gives e-bike riders the rights of other cyclists, minus sidewalks and natural-surface trails (Boston bike laws). A bike that assists past 20 mph is outside the definition.

Can you ride an e-bike on the sidewalk in Boston?

No. State law says "electric bicycles shall not be ridden or operated on sidewalks" (c.85 §11B¾(b)), and the City's page agrees: "You are not allowed to ride ebikes on the sidewalk anywhere in Massachusetts" (Boston bike laws). You may ride a pedal bike on a Boston sidewalk; you may not ride an e-bike there.

Can you take an e-bike on the T?

Yes, with limits. A completely folded bike rides every MBTA service at all times. A full-size one stays off the Red and Orange lines weekdays 7 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m., and off the Green Line and Mattapan Trolley entirely; buses carry it on the rack (MBTA).

Is there an e-bike voucher in Boston?

Not now. The City's E-Bikes Incentive Program has "provided 1,167 vouchers starting from $800" over four application rounds and has none planned (City of Boston, updated October 15, 2026). The state's MassCEC voucher "is now closed and not expected to re-open in 2026" (MassCEC). Seven of the City's participating shops are inside Boston, all on this page.

Are Bluebikes electric?

Some are. Bluebikes' own feed lists an "electric_assist" bike, and an e-bike single ride costs "$3.00 unlock fee, $0.33 per minute" (Bluebikes GBFS). The City says the e-bikes are Class 1 and "once riders reach 18 mph, the assistance shuts off" (Boston bike laws). Of the system's 628 stations, 356 are inside Boston.

Can you ride an e-bike on the Charles River path?

If your e-bike is Class 1, you can ride the paved path where it is 8 feet wide or more; on a Class 2 or Class 3, you cannot. The Charles River paths are DCR's, and its rule allows Class 2 and Class 3 bikes only "where vehicular traffic is permitted" and in bicycle lanes on DCR roadways (302 CMR 12.12, text as of October 23, 2026).

Do you need a license to ride an e-bike in Massachusetts?

No. "The definition of ''Motor vehicles'' shall not include electric bicycles," so no license or registration applies (G.L. c.90 §1), as long as the bike stays Class 1 or Class 2 at 750 watts or less. Riders 16 and younger wear a helmet (c.85 §11B).

Who repairs e-bikes in Boston?

Velotric's dealer map lists service at Apex Cycle, Ashmont Cycles and Ferris Wheels; Adi's Bike World prices an electric-bike tune-up by model; Fly E-Bike Boston's listing offers repairs. NEMO sends a mechanic: "No hauling a heavy e-bike to a shop" (NEMO). Call first with your motor system's name.

Sources, limitations and how this page was verified

The denominator

Every business any source tied to Boston became a lead: 237 in all, decided on October 29, 2026. Eight sell e-bikes from a storefront inside the city and 14 from within 2.4 miles past it. Of the other 40 leads within 3 miles past the line, 17 are not bicycle stores, 10 name no e-bike on their own pages, six are closed (one of them temporarily), six could not be checked and one repeats another.

The rest are outside Boston (146, those 40 among them), not bicycle stores (23), closed (21), duplicates of another lead (11), without a storefront (5), not checkable (4), temporarily closed (2), without a trace (2) or naming no e-bike on their own pages (1).

The four unchecked are Radical Adventures' listing at 8 North Market Street, whose website names only its Danvers store; 4130 BYKES in Roslindale, whose website is unpublished; Better Bike Buro 303 on Washington Street, which links no site of its own; and a listing named Bike Repair on Dorchester Street, with no phone or website.

Marked permanently closed on Google Maps: Papa Wheelies Back Bay, International Bicycle Centers in Allston, Giant Boston in the Fenway, REI's Fenway bike shop, Bicycle Bill, Federico's Bike Shop, Codman Cycle Co, Nexgen Bicycle Company, Erba Cycles, Spokehouse, ReneCycle and Boston Used Bikes & Thrift Shop. Community Bicycle Supply on Tremont Street left no trace: its search opened only other shops, and its old domain now serves an unrelated page.

How 237 leads became 8 counted stores and 14 nearby ones, by verdict

The sources, and what each one could and could not do

The City and the makers. The City of Boston's E-Bikes Incentive Program page lists 20 participating shops; it proves the City approved them, not today's stock. Seven dealer rosters (Aventon, Bosch, Giant, Pedego, Specialized, Trek, Velotric) and four store locators (Lectric, Magnum, QuietKat, SWFT) were read to 15 miles from the Census Bureau's point for Boston; a listing marks a dealer, not stock.

Google Maps. Two searches in each of 35 ZIP code areas, 39 neighborhood and Main Street district names and 29 places within 3 miles of the line found the businesses. A follow-up search for the leads in or near Boston and the new bike-trade cards read their status.

Leads and websites. OpenStreetMap, the Massachusetts directory, Claude's web search and Reddit supplied leads, never verdicts; all 16 Reddit threads were read. On a shop's own site, a priced list, a stock line or its own sentence counts; a menu entry does not.

Boston limits

The Census Geocoder placed every counted address inside the Incorporated Place "Boston city," and the Census Bureau's TIGERweb boundary agrees for each. Distances run straight from Boston City Hall, the point the City's address registry gives for 1 City Hall Plaza, which OpenStreetMap's outline of the building confirms within 0.02 mile. Miles past the line are measured to Boston's land, since 46% of its Census area is water.

Limitations

  1. Stock moves: a counted store may not have your model the day you visit.
  2. Three of the eight are counted on Velotric's dealer map and one, Adi's Bike World, on the City's voucher list alone; that program is closed, so its list shows whom the City approved, not today's stock.
  3. Fly E-Bike Boston is counted on its chain's own site and its open Google listing; the chain's store locator would not load on October 29, 2026.
  4. Hours come from each store's own pages; where none could be read, the card says to call. Apex Cycle and Cambridge Bicycle print winter hours that start in November.
  5. DCR's regulation is quoted from mass.gov's file as the Internet Archive saved it on October 23, 2026; mass.gov refused the request on October 29, 2026.
  6. The lane and path miles are a segment-by-segment measure of the City's 2024 layer, in which 8.2 paved path miles name no owner.
  7. The nearby list covers the businesses the sources placed within 3 miles past the line; a store no map, list, search or forum named would be missing.
  8. The page is re-checked by April 2027, sooner if S.3168 or Docket #0326 moves, or a listed store closes, moves or stops selling e-bikes.
