How we verified this directory — Milad Ghobadibeygvand, BScN

The denominator came first: Minnesota's 19 cities of 50,000 or more in the Census Bureau's 2024 estimates. Candidates came from OpenStreetMap, seven makers' dealer locators and the Department of Revenue's list of retailers approved for its closed e-bike rebate, and one store an AI engine named: 223 storefronts once merged.

Each shop's own website was read for e-bikes and 189 Google Maps listings for closures; rental-only businesses, vehicle dealers and closed stores were left out.

Verified October 8, 2026; due again April 2027.

Quick Answer

There are 111 verified e-bike shops in Minnesota as of October 8, 2026, listed on this page across 67 communities in 32 counties. The Seven-County Metro holds 63 of them, and Duluth carries 5. Brooklyn Park, Plymouth and Edina have none inside their city lines.

An e-bike with a motor of "not more than 750 watts" is a bicycle in Minnesota, not a motor vehicle, so it needs no driver's license (Minn. Stat. § 169.011); no one under 15 may ride one, of any class. The state's e-bike rebate is closed. The Minnesota e-bike law guide covers the county and city rules.

Minnesota's e-bike counters gather around its two big cities and then follow the lakes. The Seven-County Metro holds 63 of the 111 stores on this page, and outside it they cluster in lake and trail towns: Alexandria has three, Nisswa two, Detroit Lakes two.

So search by the town on your own mailing address. More than half of the stores here sit outside Minnesota's cities of 50,000 or more, and every listing gives the street, the phone and the date of the check, region by region.

The cover shows the Stone Arch Bridge over the Mississippi in Minneapolis, which the National Park Service calls "the only bridge of its kind over the Mississippi River", built of "native granite and limestone" (NPS). A "working railroad bridge until 1978", it is now "[m]ostly used by walkers and bicyclists".

After repairs the bridge reopened in full on July 21, 2025, when, in the Park Board's words, it "finished construction ahead of schedule and it is fully open" (Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board).

Minnesota's eBike Map, City by City

Every Minnesota city of 50,000 or more residents in the Census Bureau's 2024 estimates has a row below, with the verified storefronts inside its line and the candidates still open. No Minnesota city has a directory page of its own yet, so every store is counted here.

Find your city in the first column. A dash under Verified stores means no verified store sits inside the city line; the nearest one is measured further down.

Sixteen of the 19 cities carry at least one verified store. Brooklyn Park, Plymouth and Edina carry none, and each has a store within four miles of its Census point: 3.8 miles from Brooklyn Park, 3.7 from Plymouth and 2.4 from Edina.

The table is a narrow window on the state, because it stops at the Census Bureau's 50,000 mark. Of the 111 storefronts listed on this page, 48 sit inside one of its cities and 63 sit outside them, in towns such as Hopkins, Nisswa, Alexandria, Detroit Lakes and Northfield.

Size predicts little. Brooklyn Park, with 82,893 residents, has no verified store inside its line, while Eden Prairie, at 62,905, carries five.

Bottom line Look up the town on your mailing address, not the nearest big city. In Minnesota the closest counter is often in a lake town or a western suburb outside the table, and every listing prints a ZIP code you can type straight into a map.

Minnesota eBike Law — 2026 Quick Reference

Minnesota keeps its e-bike rules in the traffic chapter of its statutes, and two of them are aimed at the people who make and sell the bikes. Each rule below quotes section 169.011 or section 169.222 of Minnesota Statutes as the Office of the Revisor of Statutes publishes them, read on October 8, 2026. No 2026 law has changed the e-bike provisions quoted here.

  • What counts as an e-bike. A bicycle with two or three wheels that, among five conditions, "is equipped with an electric motor that has a power output of not more than 750 watts" and "has a battery or electric drive system that has been tested to an applicable safety standard by a third-party testing laboratory" (§ 169.011, subd. 27). A 750 W motor is inside the line, because the statute says not more than.
  • Four classes. Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3, plus a "multiple mode" bike that switches between them. A multiple mode bike with a throttle "must not be capable of exceeding 20 miles per hour on motorized propulsion alone in any mode when the throttle is engaged" (§ 169.222, subd. 6b(e)).
  • Not a motor vehicle. "Motor vehicle does not include an electric-assisted bicycle" (§ 169.011, subd. 42(b)), so you need no driver's license to ride one.
  • Ride where a bicycle rides. You "may operate an electric-assisted bicycle in the same manner as provided for operation of other bicycles", on the shoulder, in a bike lane and on a bike route. With the motor on, Class 1 and 2 may use bicycle paths and trails unless one of three listed statutes bars them, and Class 3 and multiple mode bikes may too "unless the local authority or state agency having jurisdiction over the bicycle path or trail prohibits the operation" (§ 169.222, subd. 6a).
  • Fifteen, for every class. "A person under the age of 15 must not operate an electric-assisted bicycle" (§ 169.222, subd. 6a(e)).
  • What a broken rule costs you. Section 169.222 sets no penalty of its own, so the chapter's default applies: "it is a petty misdemeanor for any person to do any act forbidden or fail to perform any act required by this chapter", punished "by a fine of not more than $300", and a violation that endangers a person or property is a misdemeanor (§ 169.89, subds. 1 and 2).
  • State trails. The Department of Natural Resources says "Electric-assist or pedal-assist bicycles are allowed on state trails, or wherever normal bicycles are allowed", if they meet the statute's definition, and warns that state forests and wildlife areas may set other rules (DNR).

What the law asks of the shop

The class label is the maker's or distributor's job, and you can find it before you pay. "The manufacturer or distributor of an electric-assisted bicycle must apply a label to the bicycle that is permanently affixed in a prominent location"; it shows "the class number, top assisted speed, and motor wattage" in type of at least 9 points (§ 169.222, subd. 6b(a)).

A machine sold to be unlocked past the classes is not an e-bike in Minnesota at all. The definition shuts out a vehicle "designed, manufactured, or intended by the manufacturer or seller to be configured or modified to not meet the requirements for an electric-assisted bicycle" (§ 169.011, subd. 27(b)), so ask the shop whether the model you are holding has an unlock mode.

The state e-bike rebate is closed

The state paid part of the price for two seasons and has now stopped. For 2025 it was "worth 75% of qualifying expenses, up to $750", and the Department of Revenue now says "All rebate certificates have been allocated and this program is now closed" and that "there will not be any future application periods" (Minnesota Department of Revenue).

The program still left a useful record behind. The department published a list of every retailer it approved to take rebate certificates, last updated October 30, 2025, and 93 of the 111 storefronts on this page appear on it. That list is a year old and the program is gone, so it served here as a lead, never as proof: each store was checked again on its own site.

Before you pay, check two things. Find the class label on the frame, and ask whether the battery or drive system has been tested by a third-party laboratory, because a Minnesota e-bike must have both. The Minnesota e-bike law guide covers the county and city rules, and the 50-state law table sets Minnesota's 750 W wording beside every other state's.

Not sure which class you need? The buying guide walks through what Class 1, 2 and 3 each do, what a good e-bike costs and how battery certification works, so you know what to ask before you visit a counter. Every bike it recommends ships free within the contiguous United States.

If your city has none: the nearest verified store

Three of the 19 cities checked have no verified e-bike store inside their own line. If you live in one of them, this table gives the nearest, measured in a straight line from the Census Bureau's 2024 Gazetteer point for the city, so expect the drive to run a little longer.

Your city Nearest verified store Distance
Brooklyn Park Trailhead Champlin 3.8 mi
Plymouth Erik's, Minnetonka 3.7 mi
Edina Pedego Electric Bikes, Eden Prairie 2.4 mi

None of the three gaps is wide. If you live in Edina, you have a second choice almost as close, Brown's Bicycles in Richfield at 2.5 miles, and Plymouth's next nearest is Erik's in Maple Grove at 4.2.

Horizontal bar chart of straight-line miles to the nearest verified e-bike store from the three cities with no store inside their line: Brooklyn Park 3.8, Plymouth 3.7, Edina 2.4

All three gaps are under four miles; Edina's is the shortest, at 2.4.

Would a delivered bike save you the drive? The commuter guide sorts its picks by the ride to work, from budget bikes to cargo, and checks each one against the 750-watt line. Each of them ships free within the contiguous United States.

Buying online vs buying in a Minnesota shop

A Minnesota shop gives you three things a box cannot: a test ride, a bike assembled and tuned for you, and a mechanic close by when the first winter's salt and slush reach the drivetrain. If those matter to you, the drive is worth it, and the listings above save you a wasted trip.

The counter is also where the label rule in § 169.222, subd. 6b comes due: the class number, the top assisted speed and the motor wattage, printed on the frame. Ask to see it wherever you buy.

Buying online gives you a wider choice and terms you can read in full before you commit. Return windows, warranty length and freight vary by seller, so compare them before you compare prices. Redtail's commuter and city e-bikes and the full range ship free within the contiguous United States, so if your nearest floor is an hour north, you can weigh the terms first.

Why buy from Redtail when no shop is close? Every bike ships free within the contiguous United States, you get US support by email before and after you buy, and at checkout you can pay by card, PayPal or Shop Pay, which offers installments on eligible orders.

If you plan to ride through the snow months, settle that before you choose a bike. The winter e-bike guide works out the miles each battery gives at each temperature, and the fat-tire guide covers the wide tires that float over snow and sand.

Bottom line Sixteen of Minnesota's 19 cities of 50,000 or more carry a verified store, and 63 of the 111 listed here sit outside them. Each entry gives the address, the phone and the date of the check, so call ahead before a long drive up north.

Frequently Asked Questions — Minnesota eBike Shops

Where can you buy an e-bike in Minnesota?

You can buy one at any of 111 verified storefronts as of October 8, 2026, all listed on this page. The Seven-County Metro holds 63 of them, and the rest sit in lake, trail and river towns from Detroit Lakes to Winona, so look up the community on your own mailing address.

Yes. Minn. Stat. § 169.011, subd. 27 defines an e-bike with fully operable pedals and a motor of "not more than 750 watts", and subdivision 42 keeps it out of the motor-vehicle definition. You may ride one wherever a bicycle may go, but not before age 15 (§ 169.222, subd. 6a).

Are e-bikes allowed on Minnesota bike trails?

Yes, on state trails. The Department of Natural Resources allows e-bikes that meet the statute's definition "on state trails, or wherever normal bicycles are allowed". On other paths, Class 1 and 2 may run with the motor on unless a listed statute bars them, and the agency or city in charge may ban Class 3 and multiple mode bikes (§ 169.222, subd. 6a).

Is the Minnesota e-bike rebate still available?

No. The Department of Revenue says the program "is now closed" and that "there will not be any future application periods". If you used a certificate in 2024 or 2025, you must report its value on that year's state income tax return.

How many Erik's Bike Shop stores in Minnesota sell e-bikes?

Fifteen. Erik's own store page lists 15 Minnesota stores (Erik's, Our Stores), from Woodbury to St. Cloud, and all 15 are listed on this page, each under its town, because Erik's site sells e-bikes for every one of them. A 16th Erik's in Minneapolis, at 1312 4th St SE, is marked permanently closed on Google Maps and is no longer on Erik's own list.

Where are the e-bike shops in Minneapolis and St. Paul?

Minneapolis carries 10 verified stores inside its city line and St. Paul 6, the most of any Minnesota communities on this page. Both cities' stores are listed above under the Seven-County Metro, each with its address, phone and the date of its check, so you can call ahead before you go.

Where are the e-bike shops in Duluth, Rochester and St. Cloud?

Duluth carries 5 verified stores, and Rochester and St. Cloud carry 3 each. Duluth's are listed under the Northeast region, Rochester's under the Southeast and St. Cloud's under Central, each with its street, phone and the date it was checked.

The Bottom Line

Minnesota's e-bike shops follow its people into the Twin Cities and then out to the lakes. Sixteen of the 19 cities of 50,000 or more carry a verified store, and 63 of the 111 listed here sit outside them, from Nisswa to Northfield.

Go local if a test ride, a proper assembly and a mechanic nearby matter to you, especially if you will ride through the salt and slush of winter. Edina's nearest store is 2.4 miles from its Census point.

Buy online if the nearest counter is a long drive or the model you want is not stocked near you. Set the return window and the warranty side by side before you look at price. When you are ready to compare, the buying guide walks you through the classes, the costs and battery certification first.

Either way, find the class label required by § 169.222, subd. 6b before you pay, ask about the battery's laboratory test, and keep anyone under 15 off the bike, whatever its class.

Sources, limitations and how this page was verified

How the count was reached

Every storefront is counted once, and no Minnesota city has a directory page of its own, so the statewide count and the listings are the same number: 111 verified storefronts, all listed on this page.

The candidate pool came from three places. OpenStreetMap maps 108 bicycle shops in Minnesota, 61 of them with a website. Seven makers' dealer locators gave 139 storefront rows: Bosch, Trek, Aventon, Giant, Specialized, Velotric and Pedego.

The Department of Revenue's approved-retailer list of October 30, 2025 has 185 rows, 149 of them Minnesota storefronts; the rest are online-only sellers or addresses in other states. Merged, with one more store that Perplexity named in its answers, they made 223 storefronts.

How to read the listings

Each listing ends with one of three evidence grades, which tell you how the store was checked.

Site checked covers 63 of the 111: the shop's own website, read in October 2026, names e-bikes in its own words.

Chain site checked covers 28: one website serves several storefronts, so it proves the business sells e-bikes and the listing shows where the branch is. Erik's has ten such storefronts here and Freewheel six.

A maker's dealer map covers 20: the maker itself tags the store as an e-bike seller, and the grade links to that maker's locator, or for Bosch and Pedego to the store's own page there. The shop's own site was read too and did not settle it.

Three stores on makers' maps are not counted. Bosch lists Northern Rose in Minneapolis and Speedway Engineering in Farmington, and Velotric's locator lists The Rumble House in Centerville, but Google Maps shows no business at any of the three addresses and no website of theirs could be read, so each waits on a phone call.

Bar chart of how the 111 listings were verified: site checked 63, chain site checked 28, a maker's dealer map 20

Each entry ends with its grade and the date it was checked.

Phone numbers come from the shop's sources and Google Maps. Where they disagreed, the number on the shop's own website or store page is printed, and where nothing settled it, no number is printed. Whatever the grade, call before you make a long drive.

Why the map is thin where it is thin

OpenStreetMap carries 64 of the 111 storefronts listed here, so a map alone would miss 47 of them. The Department of Revenue's list carries 93, and the makers' locators fill in all but one of the rest: Ebike Plus in Richmond, which Perplexity named and its own site confirmed.

Google Maps then did the closing. It marked 17 storefronts on the lists as permanently closed, among them Muddy Bikes in Brainerd, both New Spin stores in Rochester and the Pedego stores in Maple Grove, Park Rapids and Stillwater, and Crow Wing Cycleworks in Crosslake as temporarily closed. One more closure came from a shop's own words: Red Wing Bicycle Company's site says "we have permanently closed". None of them is counted.

Reading the shops' own sites removed the rest. Twenty businesses on the lists proved not to be bicycle storefronts. Fifteen are dealers in cars, motorcycles, motor scooters, RVs or powersports that also list e-bikes, and one sells trailers.

The other four have no shop to visit: a mobile bike shop, a mobile repair service, a dealer that sells online and a one-person dealer that orders each bike in for pickup. Two more rent e-bikes without selling them.

Bottom line A dealer roster or the state's old list alone would have counted closed stores and vehicle dealers, and the open map alone would miss 47 of the 111 stores listed here. This page needed all three lists, Google Maps and a reading of every shop's own site.

Limitations

  1. 69 candidates remain unresolved. Thirty-eight sites load and never mention e-bikes for sale, 22 storefronts publish no working website, and 9 could not be read: three failed on every route tried, two have only a social page we could not read (Grease Pit Bike Shop in Minneapolis on Instagram, Kolter Bicycle and Fitness in Winona on Facebook), Northlakes Electric Bikes in Hackensack sold e-bikes on a December 2024 capture of its site before its domain passed to another business, and three are the dealer-map stores named above. None is counted as an absence; each is a lead for a phone call.
  2. Named and not counted: 18 permanently closed storefronts and 1 temporarily closed, 20 vehicle dealers or businesses with no bicycle storefront, 2 rental-only businesses and 2 duplicate entries.
  3. The state's list is a year old. The Department of Revenue's approved-retailer list dates from October 30, 2025 and the program is closed, so no store is counted on that list alone; each was read again on its own site in October 2026.
  4. Nine state-list addresses are placed by city. The Census geocoder matched neither form of their street, so they sit at their city's Census point; their town and county are right, and a distance measured from one of them is a city distance.
  5. Distances are straight-line from the Census Bureau's 2024 Gazetteer point for each city, never driving distance.
  6. One store's heading follows its map pin. Trailhead Cycling's Minnetonka showcase store is listed under Hopkins, where the Census places Velotric's pin for it, though its address reads Minnetonka.
  7. Demand evidence. The questions this page answers come from Google and Bing autocomplete and related searches, the headings of 14 pages that compete for Minnesota shop and law searches, and 39 answers from three AI engines, read logged out and saved raw. ChatGPT returned empty answers, Google's AI Mode a traffic check and Bing's Copilot no answer, so none of the three could be read.
  8. No search-volume figure appears on this page. No keyword pricing was run for this topic.
  9. The cover is a generated scene. The National Park Service's photograph of the Stone Arch Bridge was the reference for the generation; see the image credit below.
  10. The publisher sells electric bikes. Redtail sells online and has no commercial relationship with any shop listed. The listings carry no ranking, no sponsored placement and no preference for brands Redtail stocks.

When this page expires. It is re-checked when any of these happen: a listed shop closes, moves or stops selling e-bikes; the Legislature amends Minn. Stat. § 169.011, § 169.222 or § 169.89; the state opens a new e-bike incentive; a Minnesota city gets a directory page of its own; or the Census Bureau publishes a new vintage of estimates. If you spot one of those first, email sales@redtailebikes.com.
