How we verified this directory — Milad Ghobadibeygvand, BScN

Seven e-bike makers' dealer maps were read to 10 miles around Chico, with OpenStreetMap, Yelp, Superpages, Google Maps, every shop's own website and eight questions put to answer engines. The Census geocoder settled which addresses sit inside the city.

A store counts when a page it runs sells e-bikes or a maker's dealer map lists it for e-bikes. Five closed shops, three service-only or site-less shops and four sporting-goods stores are named below and left out of the count. Last verified October 8, 2026; next check April 2027.

Quick Answer

As of October 8, 2026, four bike shops in Chico sell e-bikes: North Rim Adventure Sports on East 2nd Street, Greenline Cycles on Main Street, Performance Bicycle on East 20th Street and All Electric Motion on Walnut Street. Two more floors stand just outside the city, Northstate Powersports on Midway and Hughes Ski Hut on Highway 99.

Choose the class you want with the buying guide before a test ride, and read the California law page with Chico's downtown and Bidwell Park rules below.

Chico counted 102,911 people in the Census Bureau's 2024 estimate. The trail on the cover runs through Upper Bidwell Park, and the City calls the park "One of the largest municipal parks in the nation" and "the crown jewel of the City of Chico."

"Bidwell Park was established July 20, 1905 through the donation by Annie Bidwell of approximately 2,500 acres of land to the City of Chico," the same page says. It adds that "Mountain biking is one of the most common activities that takes place in Bidwell Park," which is why the park's bicycle rules get a section of their own below.

B-Line Buses — Taking Your eBike Through Chico

Butte Regional Transit runs B-Line, and its Mobility Aid Policy, dated August 2026, sets the rules for a bike on the bus.

On the rack. The policy covers "Bicycles (electric and non-electric)" and says "Bicycle racks have a 50-pound limit per bicycle location/tray." It adds, "Bicycles or e-bikes exceeding that limit shall not be carried on bike racks."

Inside the bus. "Only collapsible (folding) devices are permitted on board," the same policy says, and a heavier e-bike may ride inside only under its rules for mobility aids and securement areas. A wheelchair user has priority there, since the policy states that "Strollers, bicycles, electric bicycles, push carts, shopping carts, wagons are not mobility aids under the ADA."

Weigh your e-bike before you count on the bus. If it weighs more than 50 pounds with the battery in, the rack refuses it; a folding e-bike can ride inside instead.

Riding the B-Line with your bike? The folding guide gives every pick's folded size in inches, the number to check before you carry one aboard, and treats the ride-to-the-bus or train case in a section of its own.

Bidwell Park and Chico's Bike Paths

Bidwell Park welcomes bicycles on its roads and trails, under rules that change with the weather. The City's bike map shows the town's bike paths, lanes and B-Line routes on one sheet.

Where bicycles may go in the park

Chico's § 12.18.080 says "Bicycle use in Bidwell Park shall be permitted only on the roads and trails, except that bicycles shall not be permitted on Yahi Trail." No bicycle may use the trails "whenever the director determines that damage is likely due to wet weather conditions and closes the trails."

The City's park rules sheet puts it plainly: "Due to erosion issues, trails in Upper Bidwell Park are closed to bicycles and horses during wet conditions." The same sheet says "Bicycle riding is not allowed in Caper Acres or on the pool deck."

Helmets, speed and the swimming holes

Under § 12.18.070, "No one shall ride a bicycle off-road in Middle or Upper Bidwell Park unless wearing a bicycle helmet," at any age. Section 12R.32.020 caps any vehicle or bicycle in a city park at "twenty-five miles per hour."

Section 12.18.120 bars bicycle use "within 100 feet of the banks of any swimming pool or swimming area in Bidwell Park," except where roads or bike paths run closer.

Is an e-bike a bicycle in the park? Two readings

The park rules name bicycles and never e-bikes. Under Vehicle Code § 231, "An electric bicycle is a bicycle," so the trail rule above reaches your e-bike and lets it ride where bicycles may.

The parks title, though, defines a vehicle in § 12R.32.015 as every device that carries a person "excepting devices moved by human power," and an e-bike is not moved by human power alone. Read that way, the park's vehicle rules, such as parking only in marked areas, apply too, so ride the roads and open trails and lock up at a rack or in a marked lot.

Check the trail status before a wet-season ride. Upper Park's trails close to bicycles in wet conditions, Yahi Trail is never open to them, and every rider off the pavement in Middle or Upper Park wears a helmet.

Shopping for a bike to ride Upper Park's dirt? The electric mountain bike guide has 10 picks and explains the class line that decides where each one may ride.

California and Chico eBike Laws — What Makes an eBike Legal in Chico

California sets the classes and the age line. Chico's code adds a downtown sidewalk zone, a civic-center ban and a bicycle-registration rule that state law has since made optional.

The state's definition, and the police flyer

Vehicle Code § 312.5(a) defines an e-bike as a bicycle with "fully operable pedals and an electric motor that does not exceed 750 watts of power." A 2026 Chico Police flyer words it as a motor "that's less than 750 watts" and calls a machine "750 watts or more" an e-moto, so a motor of exactly 750 watts is legal under the statute and over the line in the flyer.

Class Motor help Assist stops at Rider
1 Only while pedaling 20 mph Any age; helmet under 18
2 Pedaling or throttle 20 mph Any age; helmet under 18
3 Only while pedaling; speedometer 28 mph 16 and up; every rider in a helmet

Look for the permanent label § 312.5(c) requires, with "the classification number, top assisted speed, and motor wattage," before you buy. A legal e-bike "is not a motor vehicle" under § 24016(b), so it needs no license plate or registration from the state.

Section 21213 keeps riders under 16 off Class 3, and § 21212 requires "a properly fitted and fastened bicycle helmet" on anyone under 18. The police flyer lists a Class 3 as "Eligible for Class 2, 3 and 4 bikeways only," which keeps it off the off-roadway Class I bike paths.

Downtown sidewalks and the civic center

Chico's § 10.40.090(A) says "No person shall ride a bicycle upon any sidewalk in that portion of the central business district" bounded by First and Fifth Streets and by Wall and Salem Streets. Outside that zone, subsection (C) lets you ride a sidewalk if you yield to people on foot and give "an audible signal before overtaking."

Since § 231 makes an e-bike a bicycle, walk it on downtown sidewalks. And under § 9.43.040(B), "Riding bicycles is not allowed in the civic center."

Registering your bike with the City

Section 10.40.020 still reads "No city resident shall operate or use a bicycle on any street within the city without city registration or a license." That line no longer binds you: Vehicle Code § 39002(a), as the Legislature amended it in 2022, says a city with a licensing ordinance "shall not prohibit the operation of an unlicensed bicycle."

Registering remains an option. Under § 10.40.030(B), the City registers a bicycle with a manufacturer's serial number "at no cost to city residents," and a shop that sells bicycles may register a new one for you.

The City's Bicycle License page takes applications online and asks for the serial number, maker, model, type, color, wheel size and frame size. If you buy a used bike the City has registered, deliver the signed certificate "within 10 days of taking possession"; the Finance Office answers at (530) 879-7320.

What a violation can cost

Riding through the civic center breaks Chapter 9.43, and § 9.43.150 says a violation "shall be a misdemeanor or an infraction" and may be enforced by a criminal action or an administrative citation. The Bidwell Park rules in Chapter 12.18 carry the same words in § 12.18.465.

A park rule in Title 12R, such as the 25 mph limit, is "an infraction punishable by a fine" under § 12R.02.060. Elsewhere in the code, § 1.04.120 makes a violation "an infraction, unless such provision shall otherwise provide that it is a misdemeanor."

What changes on January 1, 2027

From January 1, 2027, AB 2346, Chapter 842, sets a prima facie limit of 10 miles per hour on any California sidewalk. From January 1, 2027, SB 1167, Chapter 846, bars selling "A vehicle with motor power of more than 750 watts" as an e-bike; both take effect under the state Constitution's art. IV, § 8(c)(1).

Before your first Chico ride: walk the bike on downtown sidewalks and through the civic center, keep Class 3 for riders 16 and up, and put a helmet on every rider under 18 and on everyone riding Bidwell's dirt.

Where to Ride Your eBike in Chico

The street is open to every class: under § 21200, a rider "has all the rights" of a driver, and Chico's § 10.40.100 keeps you inside a bike lane where one is marked and in single file with other riders.

Six panels of where a Chico e-bike may ride: walk on downtown sidewalks between 1st and 5th and Wall and Salem, no riding in the civic center, Bidwell Park's roads and trails but never Yahi Trail, a helmet off-road in Middle and Upper Park, no city license needed to ride, and age 16 for a Class 3 anywhere in California

Your Chico riding checklist

  • Read the label for 750 W or less; the police flyer's line sits just below that.
  • Write down the serial number; City registration is free for residents and optional.
  • Walk downtown between First and Fifth and between Wall and Salem.
  • Wear a helmet on any dirt in Middle or Upper Bidwell Park.
  • Stay off Upper Park's trails when they close for wet weather.
  • Weigh the bike before you rely on a B-Line rack: 50 pounds per tray.

Frequently Asked Questions — Chico, CA eBikes

Where can you rent an e-bike in Chico?

All Electric Motion at 510 Walnut St lists rentals on its own menu, and Velotric's dealer map lists North Rim Adventure Sports on East 2nd Street for rentals as well as sales. Greenline Cycles on Main Street rents bikes too. Call first, since rental stock changes with the season.

Are Campus Bicycles and Chico Bike & Board still open?

No. Google Maps marks Campus Bicycles at 515 Main St and Chico Bike & Board at 845 Main St permanently closed. Greenline Cycles now trades from that Main Street address and is on Bosch's dealer map, so you can start your search there.

Is Pullins Cyclery still open?

Google Maps lists Pullins Cyclery at 801 Main St as a bicycle shop, but its own domain now shows a Wix "Reconnect Your Domain" page and no maker's map lists it. That is why this directory names it without counting it; call before you go.

Where can you get a bike repaired in Chico?

All four e-bike stores service bikes, and Greenline Cycles advertises "E-bike tune-ups and diagnostics." REI's Chico bike shop offers an "E-Bike Tune," Performance Bicycle offers "professional bike repair," and Butte Creek Bikes at 7 Three Sevens Ln is a repair-only shop.

Yes. An e-bike with working pedals and a motor that does "not exceed 750 watts" is a bicycle under the Vehicle Code, needs no license plate or state registration, and comes in Classes 1, 2 and 3. Chico adds its own rules: walk it on downtown sidewalks and keep off the civic center. City registration is free for residents, and state law bars the City from prohibiting an unlicensed bicycle.

Where are the bike paths in Chico?

The City's bike map shows the bike paths, bike lanes and B-Line routes. In Bidwell Park, bicycles may use the roads and trails except Yahi Trail, and Upper Park's trails close to bicycles in wet conditions.

Can you take an e-bike on a B-Line bus in Chico?

On the front rack, if it weighs 50 pounds or less: B-Line's August 2026 policy says "Bicycles or e-bikes exceeding that limit shall not be carried on bike racks." Inside the bus, only folding devices are permitted, and riders with a mobility aid have priority in the securement area.

Sources, limitations and how this page was verified

The denominator

Chico had 102,911 residents in the Census Bureau's 2024 vintage estimate (California file, row "Chico city"), against a 2020 estimates base of 103,830.

Seventeen bike businesses inside the city were tied to it by at least one source: 4 verified, 5 closed, 3 service-only or without a page, 4 sporting-goods stores and a BMX retailer. Non-bike businesses, a club, a component maker, the campus Bike Hub (a repair program run by Adventure Outings), AMain's distribution center and five listings Google Maps does not find were set aside first.

Of the 56 leads from the directories, map searches, answer engines and dealer maps, 54 were measured from the Census point; REI, placed in the city by a map point, and the campus Bike Hub, which lists no street address, were given verdicts without a distance. Six distinct e-bike floors stand within 10 miles, four of them inside the city.

The sources, and what each one could and could not do

Seven makers' dealer maps were read to 10 miles on October 7, 2026, each beside a control: Velotric, Aventon, Giant, Bosch, Specialized, Trek and Pedego's California directory. Bosch's map, read row by row, is why Hughes Ski Hut counts: a ski shop on Google Maps, it is a Bosch eBike dealer on the maker's own map.

Directories and AI search. OpenStreetMap was read as a lead pool, never a count, with Yelp, Superpages and Google Maps in a browser. Seven answer engines were asked eight questions: Perplexity and Bing's Copilot search answered all eight and Brave two on October 8, Google's AI Mode all eight on October 10, and the other three could not be read. Every business the engines named or cited was read and given a verdict.

The city code was read on American Legal Publishing in Titles 1, 9, 10, 10R, 12 and 12R, 678 sections; none names an electric bicycle. Northstate Powersports' inventory and the dealer grids were read in a browser on October 8, 2026.

City limits

Every address placed inside Chico here returned "Chico city" from the Census geocoder; REI, Northstate Powersports and the Upper Park landmark were placed from their Google Maps points by the Census coordinates layer. Mileages are straight lines from the Census Gazetteer point; road miles run longer.

Limitations

  1. What each store keeps on its floor changes week to week, so call before you drive.
  2. Performance Bicycle's weekend hours differ between its store page and Google Maps; the page prints both.
  3. Whether Bidwell Park's vehicle rules reach an e-bike has no court ruling or City guidance among the sources read.
  4. No local e-bike rebate turned up on the City, B-Line and state pages read; a Butte County program, if one opens, is not covered here.
  5. A bike shop that no directory, map search or answer engine returned could be missing from the 10-mile ring.
  6. Sixteen businesses the answer engines named or cited were given verdicts on October 10, 2026, Dan's Comp Bikes among them; the verified count did not change.

What would age this page

  • A store opening or closing inside Chico, or a repair shop starting to sell e-bikes.
  • The City amending Chapter 10.40, Chapter 12.18 or Title 12R, or B-Line changing its rack limit.
  • January 1, 2027, when AB 2346 and SB 1167 take effect.
