To find the e-bike shops in Louisville, seven e-bike makers' dealer maps, four store locators, Superpages, OpenStreetMap, 254 Google Maps searches, 16 answer-engine questions and eight Louisville Reddit threads named 172 businesses. Each one's own website was read where it opened, and the Census geocoder and Jefferson County's boundary placed every address.

To be listed, a store's own site has to sell e-bikes or an e-bike maker's dealer map has to name it. Closed shops, rentals, mobile services and stores whose pages name no e-bike stay off the list, and stores over the county line get their own section. TARC — eBikes on Louisville Buses

Your e-bike can ride a TARC bus on the front rack if it fits there, and its battery stays on the bike. TARC's bikes on board page, read October 24, 2026, says "Electric bikes (e-bikes) are allowed on the bike racks if they fit. E-Bike batteries must remain on the bike and cannot be brought on board the bus."

On TARC What the page says
Which buses carry bikes "All TARC buses are bike rack-equipped (except electric buses)"
How many bikes "Each bike rack can carry up to three (3) bikes"
What the rack refuses "tandems, recumbents, mopeds, scooters and tricycles"
Loading From the curb; "the driver is not able to get off the bus"
Damage on the rack "Bikes are mounted at the rider's own risk"

An electric trike rides home on its own wheels. The rack takes no tricycle or recumbent, so a three-wheeled e-bike never makes the trip by bus. A folding electric scooter can ride inside, switched off and folded on your lap or under your seat; TARC lists Lime and Bird scooters as unauthorized.

Taking the bus part of the way? Check that your e-bike fits a three-bike front rack, keep the battery on it, and let an electric bus pass.

Riding the whole commute instead? The commuter guide measured 222 bikes and kept 18 picks from six brands, $569 to $2,299, each sold with hydraulic brakes, a torque sensor, fenders, a rack and lights.

Trail Access — the Parklands, Metro Parks and the Big Four Bridge

The Parklands of Floyds Fork admits a Class 1 only. Its e-bike policy "authorizes persons over the age of 16 to use 'Class I' electronic-assist bicycles" on roadways and authorized bike trails, and "Class II and Class III e-bikes are not permitted". Its biking page counts "Over sixty miles of hike-bike trails", which walkers share.

In Metro Parks, the park roads are open to you on any reading. The parks chapter keeps a bicycle on "a roadway, in areas designed for parking, or on trails and in other areas specifically designated for such activities by the Director of Parks" (§ 42.31(A)(8)), and a motor vehicle on "a roadway or in a parking area" (§ 42.31(B)(2)).

Breaking either rule is a civil fine of "not less than $50 nor more than $500 for each offense" (§ 42.99(B)(1)).

Which of the two your e-bike is, § 42.31 does not say. Chapter 74 calls a bicycle "solely human-powered" and a motor vehicle any machine powered by an "electric engine and/or motor", but only "For the purposes of this chapter" (§ 74.01).

Read with those words, an e-bike keeps to park roads and parking areas; read as the bicycle it resembles, it may also use trails the Director of Parks designates. The roads are open under both, so take a park trail only where a posted sign opens it to e-bikes.

Riders under 18 wear a helmet on a bicycle or e-bike "on any park roads to include contiguous roads or in public parks" (§ 74.07(A)(3)). The fine is $25, and the first violation brings a warning citation (§ 74.99(C)).

The Big Four Bridge names no e-bike. Waterfront Park's rules for the bridge bar "motorized vehicles, including electric scooters, mopeds, motorcycles, or cars/trucks", and its FAQ says "bikes are also welcome on the Big Four Bridge." Walk yours across, or ask the park before you ride it.

Planning a Parklands ride? Bring a Class 1 and a rider over 16. In Metro Parks, stay on the park roads unless a posted sign opens a trail to e-bikes.

Shopping for the Parklands' trails? Of 35 electric mountain bike maker pages the mountain bike guide read, one publishes a Class 1 setting, and the guide says which.

Kentucky eBike Laws — What Makes an eBike Legal in Louisville

Louisville's code defines your e-bike; Kentucky's statutes never name one. Louisville Metro counts as an e-bike a two- or three-wheeled vehicle with "fully operable pedals and an electric motor of less than 1,000 watts (1.5 h.p.)" that the motor alone moves at "less than 20 mph" on a paved, level surface with a 170-pound rider (§ 74.01).

A full-text search of the Kentucky Revised Statutes on October 24, 2026 found no section using "electric bicycle" or "e-bike", and eight that name an "electric low-speed scooter" (LRC statute search).

Read two numbers on the spec sheet. "Less than 1,000 watts" leaves out a 1,000-watt motor, and "less than 20 mph" on the motor alone leaves out a throttle that carries the bike to a full 20 mph. Both follow from § 74.01's words alone, so ask the seller for the motor's wattage and the throttle's top speed. A bike outside the definition may not use Louisville's designated bikeways (§ 74.04(B)).

Where in Louisville Metro The rule Code
Any sidewalk No rider 11 or older on a bicycle or e-bike § 74.02(A)
Downtown sidewalks No rider of any age in the Downtown Form District § 74.02(A)
Designated bikeways E-bikes allowed; "any electric vehicles that do not meet the definitions" barred § 74.04
Park roads and public parks Helmet for every rider under 18 § 74.07(A)(3)
A passenger Only on a permanent seat; a child over one, under 40 pounds or 40 inches, harnessed and helmeted § 74.02(B)
A violation Civil fine of $25 to $100; the park helmet rule $25, a warning first § 74.99

What Kentucky does define. A bicycle is "a device with an attached seat propelled primarily by human power" (601 KAR 14:020 § 1), which may ride a sidewalk "unless prohibited by law or ordinance" (§ 7(4)(a)), and § 74.02 is that ordinance in Louisville.

Kentucky's "electric low-speed scooter" weighs less than 100 pounds, is "propelled by an electric motor, human power, or both" and is "designed to operate at a maximum speed of twenty (20) miles per hour" (KRS 189.010(26)).

A rider "sixteen (16) years of age or older" may take an electric low-speed scooter on a highway, bike lane or bike path and "shall comply with all local government ordinances" (KRS 189.289). A moped needs a fuel tank or a 50 cc cylinder (KRS 186.010(5)), which no electric bike has.

Who makes these rules. Louisville Metro holds the powers of a first-class city and of a county, home rule included (KRS 67C.101(2)(a)), "throughout the total area" of Jefferson County (§ 67C.101(5)).

The cities inside the county "shall remain incorporated" with their own powers (KRS 67C.111(1)), so check Middletown's or St. Matthews' own code if you ride there often. Chapter 74 violations are civil offenses, enforced through the Code Enforcement Board (§ 74.99(A)).

When it changed. Section 74.01 as it reads today comes from Ordinance No. 157-2021, approved November 11, 2021 (§ 74.01). The Metro Council's own record on Legistar, which begins April 17, 2026, lists no bicycle, e-bike, dockless or scooter ordinance through October 22, 2026.

Two readings, and the advice that holds under both

One reading counts a 20 mph e-bike as an electric low-speed scooter, because it can meet every element of KRS 189.010(26), so KRS 189.289's floor of 16 applies. The other says the scooter definition was written for stand-up scooters and a pedal bike stays a bicycle under 601 KAR 14:020.

In Louisville the Metro code sets where you ride under both, and one choice satisfies both: a rider 16 or older on a bike whose motor stops helping below 20 mph and is under 1,000 watts.

Shopping in Louisville? Choose a motor of less than 1,000 watts whose assistance stops below 20 mph, ride the street or a bikeway instead of the sidewalk, and put a helmet on any rider under 18 in the parks.

Watching the wattage? Of the 55 listings under $1,000 the budget guide read, 29 advertise 1,000 watts or more, a motor Louisville's definition leaves out.

See e-bikes under $1,000

Seven rules for an e-bike in Louisville: a motor of less than 1,000 watts, under 20 mph on the motor alone; no rider 11 or older on a sidewalk; signed bikeways open; a helmet under 18 in the parks; a $25 to $100 fine; Class I only, over 16, in the Parklands; TARC's front rack if it fits

Where to Ride Your eBike in Louisville

Start with a signed bikeway. Louisville's Director of Public Works designates bikeways "for the sole use of bicycles, electric bicycles, roller skates, skateboards and powered micro-mobility vehicles" and posts signs on them (§ 74.04(A)), so a signed bike lane is the place your e-bike is named.

Place Who runs it Your e-bike there Source
Signed bikeways and bike lanes Louisville Metro Public Works Allowed, under 1,000 W and under 20 mph on the motor § 74.04
Sidewalks Louisville Metro Not from age 11; downtown, at no age § 74.02(A)
Park roads in Metro Parks Louisville Metro Parks Allowed, a helmet under 18, 25 mph on park roads § 42.31, § 71.87(A)(3)
Parklands of Floyds Fork trails 21st Century Parks Class I only, riders over 16 e-bike policy
Big Four Bridge Waterfront Park Bikes welcome; motorized vehicles barred; e-bikes not named park rules

The Big Four Bridge. Waterfront Park counts "an average of 1.5 million pedestrians and bicycles" a year on the 1895 railroad bridge, about half a mile across the Ohio to Jeffersonville (Waterfront Park). Walk your e-bike over until the park names it.

The Parklands. "Over sixty miles of hike-bike trails" run through the park, with five bike repair stations along the Louisville Loop where you can stop to fix a flat (biking page).

Why buy from Redtail

When the Louisville floor you visit lacks the model you want, Redtail delivers it at no charge: "Redtail eBikes offers free shipping on every electric bike within the contiguous United States" (shipping policy). Your order is "prepared and dispatched within 1–3 business days of confirmation," and "most e-bikes arrive within 5–10 business days after dispatch."

Open the carton with your phone out. Transit damage reported "within 48 hours of delivery" goes to the carrier as a claim Redtail files for you (How Buying Works), and a bike that "won't power on, won't charge, shows an error code, or has a faulty component" is "covered under manufacturer warranty," with repair or replacement arranged remotely (refund policy).

Before and after you buy, "US support by phone or email" answers (contact page): call (213) 444-4020, where "Every voicemail is returned," or write, since "We typically respond to email within one business day." Checkout takes Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and the terms of service name the company that sells to you.

Frequently Asked Questions — Louisville, KY eBikes

Yes. Louisville Metro defines an e-bike as a two- or three-wheeled vehicle with "fully operable pedals and an electric motor of less than 1,000 watts" that its motor alone moves at "less than 20 mph" (§ 74.01), then sets where you ride it: off sidewalks from age 11, onto signed bikeways, helmeted under 18 in the parks. Kentucky's statutes never use the words "electric bicycle" (a full-text search of the KRS, October 24, 2026).

Do you need a license or registration for an e-bike in Kentucky?

No Kentucky statute names an e-bike, so none requires a license, registration or insurance for one by name. The licensing and registration chapter leaves "electric low-speed scooters" and "devices moved by human and animal power" out of what it calls a vehicle (KRS 186.010(8)(b)), and its moped rules need a fuel tank or a 50 cc cylinder (KRS 186.010(5)). The Kentucky e-bike law page works through each requirement.

Kentucky's statutes set no e-bike classes, so no state rule separates a throttle from pedal assist. In Louisville the line is speed and wattage: the Metro definition covers a bike whose motor of "less than 1,000 watts" alone moves it at "less than 20 mph" (§ 74.01). Ask the seller the throttle's top speed before you buy.

Can you ride an e-bike on the sidewalk in Louisville?

Not once you are 11. "No person 11 years of age or older shall operate a bicycle or an electric bicycle on the sidewalks" of Louisville Metro, and downtown no one of any age may (§ 74.02(A)); a violation is a $25 to $100 civil fine (§ 74.99(B)). Kentucky's rule lets a bicycle use a sidewalk "unless prohibited by law or ordinance" (601 KAR 14:020 § 7), and § 74.02 is that ordinance.

Do you need a helmet to ride an e-bike in Louisville?

Riders under 18 do, on park roads and in public parks: "unless they are wearing a protective helmet" (§ 74.07(A)(3)). The fine is $25, and the first violation brings a warning (§ 74.99(C)). The Parklands of Floyds Fork admits riders over 16 on a Class I only (policy).

Are e-bikes allowed on the Louisville Loop?

It depends on who manages the stretch. Through the Parklands of Floyds Fork, a Class I ridden by someone over 16 (policy). In Metro Parks the code keeps a bicycle to roads, parking areas and designated trails and a motor vehicle to roads and parking areas (§ 42.31), without saying which an e-bike is, so obey a trailhead sign that names e-bikes; the park roads are open to you either way.

Where can you rent an e-bike in Louisville?

E-Rides on Frankfort Avenue: "We sell, rent and service e-Bikes", and "E-bike rentals available any day - please call for availability." Pedego Louisville on Bardstown Road lists "RENT A PEDEGO" on its dealer page, and across the river SunnySide in Clarksville, Indiana offers "premium e-bike sales and rentals."

Who will work on an e-bike bought online in Louisville?

E-Rides says "We will work on most brands of e-Bikes" and "We also diagnose and replace controllers, displays, e-brakes, pedal assist sensors, respoke hub motors" (e-ridesusa.com). Call ahead with your bike's brand and motor.

Sources, limitations and how this page was verified

The denominator

Every business any source tied to Louisville became a lead: 172 in all, read on October 24, 2026. Eleven sell e-bikes from a storefront inside Louisville Metro, and three more from just across the river.

The rest are outside Jefferson County (110), not bicycle stores (14), closed (10), name no e-bike on their own pages (6), left no trace (5), could not be checked (5), list an address the shop has left (2), have no storefront (2), rent or run tours without selling (2), duplicate another lead (1) or are temporarily closed (1).

Of the 110 outside the county, 3 stand within 5 miles of its line and 97 lie more than 50 miles away; the nearest, DICK'S Sporting Goods in Jeffersonville, 3.02 miles out, names no e-bike on its store page.

Three of the five that could not be checked are worth a call. REI Louisville, (502) 916-1776, refused every reader sent to its store pages.

The Office - Bicycle Sales & Service in St. Matthews, (502) 533-0574, lists no website, and GJ Custom Ebikes, (502) 819-3124, is a Google Maps listing with no street address. Btown Bikes and a listing named only "Bicycles" in Clarksville show neither an address nor a site.

How 172 leads became 11 counted stores and 3 nearby ones, by verdict, led by 110 outside Jefferson County and 14 not bicycle stores

The sources, and what each one could and could not do

Makers' maps. Seven dealer rosters (Aventon, Bosch, Giant, Pedego, Specialized, Trek, Velotric) and four store locators (Lectric, Magnum, QuietKat, SWFT) were read to 24 miles from the Census Bureau's internal point for Louisville Metro; a listing marks a dealer, and today's stock still needs a call.

Google Maps. Two searches in each of Louisville's 41 ZIP codes, 69 urban neighborhoods, six home-rule cities and 11 towns around the county found the businesses, and 173 place panels were then read for status and hours. Five cards were asked again by name and phone, three because their first panel opened a different business and two because it showed no street address.

Leads and websites. Superpages, OpenStreetMap (the Kentucky directory's statewide pull of October 23, after two failed pulls on October 24), the Kentucky and Indiana directories' own records, sixteen questions to Claude's web search and eight Reddit threads supplied leads, never verdicts. The Reddit replies named no store the other sources missed.

Each shop's own site was then read where it opened: a priced product list, a stock line or the shop's own sentence counts, a menu entry alone does not.

City limits

Louisville here means the consolidated local government the Kentucky statutes set up, with "power and jurisdiction throughout the total area embraced by the official jurisdictional boundaries of the county" (KRS 67C.101(5)). Census population estimates give Louisville/Jefferson County metro government and Jefferson County the same 795,222 people; the 83 cities inside hold 153,260 of them, and the Metro's own territory 641,962.

The Census Geocoder placed every counted street address in the consolidated city, and the Census's Jefferson County boundary agrees for each. Neighborhoods are LOJIC's urban neighborhoods and districts its Metro Council districts; distances run straight from Metro Hall, 527 West Jefferson Street, where the Census geocoder places it.

Limitations

  1. Stock moves: a counted store sold e-bikes on October 24, 2026, and may not have your model the day you visit.
  2. Hours marked (Google Maps) come from Google's listing of the store.
  3. On Your Left Cycles and Pedego Louisville are listed on makers' dealer maps; their own pages give hours and no stock list.
  4. Kentucky's statutes name no e-bike, and the Metro code defines one; the page prints both readings of the scooter statute.
  5. Chapter 42 of the Metro code sets one park rule for a bicycle and one for a motor vehicle without saying which an e-bike follows; the page prints both.
  6. Louisville Metro's own web pages, including its bike share and dockless rules, refused every reader on October 24, 2026; the page cites the code and the park, transit and Parklands pages instead.
  7. The Big Four Bridge's rules name no e-bike.
  8. The page is re-checked when the Metro Council amends Chapter 42, 71 or 74, the General Assembly names the e-bike in the KRS, TARC or the Parklands change their e-bike rules, or a listed store closes, moves or stops selling e-bikes; and by April 2027.
