How we verified this directory — Milad Ghobadibeygvand, BScN
Candidates came from OpenStreetMap, eight makers' dealer maps, a Google Maps search of all 95 Tennessee counties and every town of 5,000 or more, and AI search engines' answers. Each was checked against the shop's own website and its Google Maps listing.
A store counts when its own site offers e-bikes for sale or a maker's dealer map lists its address, and Maps shows it open. Rental-only outfits, repair-only shops, vehicle dealers and closed stores are left out.
Verified October 15, 2026; due again April 2027.
Quick Answer
There are 67 verified e-bike shops in Tennessee as of October 15, 2026, in 31 communities across 23 of the state's 95 counties. Inside city limits, Knoxville and Nashville have the most, 7 each, then Chattanooga with 6.
In Tennessee an e-bike is a bicycle with a motor of less than 750 watts, built as one of three classes (Public Chapter 823), and neither the state (Alternative Fuels Data Center) nor any of Tennessee's 88 power companies lists an e-bike rebate (rebates). If the nearest store is a long drive, every e-bike Redtail sells ships free to a Tennessee address. The Tennessee e-bike law guide covers trails and parks in depth.
Tennessee's e-bike counters are not spread the way its people are. East Tennessee holds 35.9% of the state's residents (Census Bureau 2024 estimates; divisions from the state's county directory) and 47.8% of the stores below; West Tennessee, Memphis included, holds 21.4% of the residents and 10.4% of the stores. Middle Tennessee sits between, with 42.7% of the people and 41.8% of the stores, most of them around Nashville.
Every listing below names the street, a phone number where a source confirms one, and the check that verified the store. The listings are grouped by Tennessee's nine development districts, the regional planning districts that hold all 95 counties between them (Tennessee State Data Center), then by town.
The cover shows the Walnut Street Bridge over the Tennessee River in Chattanooga, begun in 1889 and completed in 1891: 2,370 feet long, with six pin-connected, modified Camelback truss spans of iron and steel and six piers of limestone masonry (National Register nomination, read October 14, 2026).
Tennessee's eBike Map, City by City
The table lists all 18 Tennessee cities of 50,000 or more residents in the Census Bureau's 2024 estimates, with Nashville counted by the part of the metropolitan government outside its six smaller cities, the figure the Census files as the city. "Verified stores" counts stores inside the city limits; "Open leads" counts businesses that showed up as candidates and could not be confirmed.
| Place | Pop (2024) | Verified stores | Open leads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nashville | 704,963 | 7 | 6 |
| Memphis | 610,919 | 3 | 5 |
| Knoxville | 198,722 | 7 | 5 |
| Chattanooga | 191,496 | 6 | 3 |
| Clarksville | 185,690 | — | 3 |
| Murfreesboro | 168,387 | 4 | — |
| Franklin | 89,142 | 5 | 1 |
| Johnson City | 73,635 | 4 | — |
| Jackson | 69,303 | 1 | — |
| Hendersonville | 63,947 | 1 | 1 |
| Smyrna (town) | 60,302 | — | — |
| Spring Hill | 59,398 | — | — |
| Kingsport | 57,109 | 2 | — |
| Bartlett | 56,708 | — | — |
| Gallatin | 52,489 | — | — |
| Collierville (town) | 51,951 | — | — |
| Lebanon | 51,501 | — | — |
| Cleveland | 50,232 | 1 | 1 |
Eleven of the 18 cities (Census Bureau 2024 estimates) have at least one verified store inside their limits. The seven that do not, Clarksville, Smyrna, Spring Hill, Bartlett, Gallatin, Collierville and Lebanon, each have one within 27 miles; the nearest-store table names it.
Those 18 cities hold 38.7% of Tennesseans (Census Bureau 2024 estimates) and 41 of the 67 stores (61.2%). The other 26 stand in smaller towns and on unincorporated county land, which is why a list of the big cities alone would miss them.
Per resident, counting each region's counties as the Tennessee State Data Center groups them, Chattanooga and Southeast Tennessee leads with 1.4 stores per 100,000 people, against 0.9 statewide, and Tri-Cities and Northeast Tennessee follows with 1.3. Memphis and the Midsouth has 14.4% of Tennesseans and 6 of the stores (9.0%). Northwest Tennessee has no verified store at all.

Bottom line Start with your city in the table, then your region in the listings. The counters run thickest in East Tennessee and around Nashville and thinnest in the west, so a West Tennessee buyer should expect a longer drive or plan to order a commuter e-bike online.
Tennessee eBike Law — 2026 Quick Reference
Tennessee treats your e-bike as a bicycle, so you need no driver's license, registration, title or insurance to ride one (Public Chapter 823, section 3). Two rules changed in 2026, and a rule you read before April may already be out of date (Public Chapter 651).
- What qualifies. Two or three wheels, at least one of them 20 inches or larger, working pedals, and an electric motor of less than 750 watts, built as one of three classes (Public Chapter 823, section 2).
- The three classes. A Class 1 assists only while you pedal and stops at 20 mph; a Class 2 can move on the motor alone and stops at 20 mph; a Class 3 assists only while you pedal and stops at 28 mph (section 2).
- Where Class 1 and 2 ride. Anywhere a bicycle may, and the 2026 act spells that out: bike lanes, the shoulder and "a path or trail intended for use by bicyclists" (Public Chapter 651, section 1).
- Your city can now say no. A local government by resolution or ordinance, or a state agency by rule or policy, may regulate or prohibit Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes on those lanes, paths and roads, state highways included, "in the interest of public safety" (section 1). Franklin, for one, publishes its own e-bike rules page.
- Class 3 off the road. Only on a lane or path within or beside the street, or where the local government or agency allows it (section 1).
- Sidewalks. Only where your city allows bicycles on that sidewalk, and only with the motor turned off (Public Chapter 823, section 7(a)(4)).
- Age. Since July 1, 2026 you must be 16 to operate a Class 3 on a street or highway; a younger rider may still ride as a passenger on a Class 3 built to carry one (Public Chapter 651, section 2; Public Chapter 823, section 8(a)).
- Helmets. Every Class 3 rider and passenger wears one, at any age (section 8(b)), and so does anyone under 16 riding or carried on any bicycle (T.C.A. § 55-52-105).
- The label. Every new e-bike sold in Tennessee since January 1, 2017 must carry a permanent label with its class, top assisted speed and motor wattage (Public Chapter 823, section 4). Look for it before you pay.
Bottom line Match the class to the rider and the route. Since July 1, 2026 you must be 16 to operate a Class 3 on a street or highway, every Class 3 rider wears a helmet at any age, and a city or county may now restrict Class 1 and 2 e-bikes on its own lanes and paths, so check the town you ride in before you buy.
What breaking a rule costs
| The rule you break | What the statute says it costs |
|---|---|
| Riding a Class 3 on a street before you turn 16 | A delinquent act, "punishable only by a fine not to exceed fifty dollars ($50.00)" (section 8(c)(1), age set by Public Chapter 651) |
| Riding a Class 3 without a helmet | A Class C misdemeanor (section 8(c)(2)) |
| Riding a sidewalk closed to bicycles, or with the motor on; a Class 3 on a path it may not use | A Class C misdemeanor for a rider who does it knowingly (section 7(a)(6)) |
| Knowingly changing an e-bike's speed without replacing its class label | A Class C misdemeanor (section 5) |
| A parent letting a child under 12 ride without a helmet | A civil penalty of "two dollars ($2.00) and court costs", after a warning for a first offense (T.C.A. § 55-52-106) |
The state Department of Transportation's bicycle-laws page, read October 14, 2026, still prints the rules the 2026 act replaced: a Class 3 age of 14 where the act now says 16, and the path rules as they stood before April. The act in force is Public Chapter 651, signed April 6, 2026 (the bill's record). Where the two disagree, follow the act.
Rebates and tax credits
Tennessee has no statewide e-bike rebate or tax credit: the federal Alternative Fuels Data Center lists the state's electric-vehicle incentives, and none of them covers a bicycle (read October 14, 2026). Nashville came closest. A 2023 Metro Council resolution would have spent $1,000,000 in federal relief money on e-bike subsidies, and it was withdrawn in August 2023.
No e-bike rebate appears on the websites of all 88 Tennessee electric utilities that EIA Form 861 lists, read on October 15, 2026 (82 in full, 6 in part), or on TVA EnergyRight, which offers its energy-efficiency rebates together with your local power company. A program can start at any time, so ask your power company before you buy.
Know your class before you shop. The buying guide explains Class 1, 2 and 3 in plain terms and matches each to the riding it suits, so you walk into a Tennessee counter knowing which one your roads allow.
Read the buying guideE-Bike Shops in Tennessee, Region by Region
A mailing address does not tell you whose rules apply. Since the 2026 act, a city or county can restrict Class 1 and 2 e-bikes on its own lanes and paths, and its rules stop at its line: 7 of the 67 stores below stand outside the town on their address, among them Chattanooga addresses in East Ridge and a Knoxville address in Farragut.
A store sits under its mailing town unless that town is one of the 18 big cities and the store stands outside it; then it sits under the place it stands in.

Where can you buy an e-bike in Tennessee?
At any of the 67 storefronts listed on this page, in 31 communities across 23 of Tennessee's 95 counties. Start with the region you ride in. Inside city limits, Knoxville and Nashville have the most, 7 each, then Chattanooga with 6. If no store is near you, every e-bike we sell ships free within the contiguous United States.
Where are the e-bike shops in Nashville?
The Greater Nashville region lists 22 stores across 8 communities, and 7 of them stand inside Nashville's city limits, as many as inside Knoxville's and more than in any other Tennessee city. Outside Nashville, Franklin has 5; Murfreesboro has 4; Brentwood has 2, and four other towns have one each. The region's listings run in alphabetical order by town.
Where are the e-bike shops in Knoxville, Chattanooga and Memphis?
Knoxville and East Tennessee lists 16, 7 inside Knoxville's limits; Chattanooga and Southeast Tennessee lists 10, 6 inside Chattanooga's limits; Memphis and the Midsouth lists 6, 3 inside Memphis's limits. Each region's listings name the town, the street and what verified the store, and the nearest-store table covers the suburbs with none inside their limits.
Are e-bikes legal in Tennessee?
Yes. Tennessee defines an electric bicycle as one with two or three wheels, at least one of them 20 inches or larger, working pedals and a motor of less than 750 watts, built as a Class 1, 2 or 3, and it treats that machine as a bicycle rather than a motor vehicle (Public Chapter 823). Check the label before you buy: it must state the class, the top assisted speed and the wattage.
What changed in Tennessee e-bike law in 2026?
Two rules, both in Public Chapter 651, signed April 6, 2026. Since July 1, you must be 16, not 14, to operate a Class 3 on a street or highway. And a local government or state agency may now restrict or ban Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes on bike lanes, shoulders and bike paths when it finds public safety requires it, so check your city's rules before you ride a new route.
Do you need a license or a helmet to ride an e-bike in Tennessee?
You need no license, registration or insurance, because the law exempts e-bikes from the motor-vehicle rules (Public Chapter 823, section 3). Helmets are another matter. Every Class 3 rider and passenger must wear one at any age, and anyone under 16 must wear one on any bicycle (section 8(b); T.C.A. § 55-52-105).
Does Tennessee have an e-bike rebate?
No. None of the state's electric-vehicle incentives that the federal Alternative Fuels Data Center lists covers a bicycle (read October 14, 2026), and no e-bike rebate appears on the websites of the 88 electric utilities that the U.S. Energy Information Administration lists, read on October 15, 2026. Nashville's Metro Council weighed $1,000,000 in e-bike subsidies in 2023, and the resolution was withdrawn.
The Bottom Line
Tennessee has 67 verified e-bike storefronts in 31 communities. They run thickest in East Tennessee and around Nashville and thinnest in the west, and 11 of the 18 big cities have one inside their limits.
The law asks for no license or registration and sets the motor at less than 750 watts (Public Chapter 823), and since July 1, 2026 it sets 16 as the age to operate a Class 3 on a street (Public Chapter 651). For a store across the state line, start from the U.S. e-bike shop directory.
Bottom line Find the region you ride in, call the nearest store before you drive, and check your city's own e-bike rules, which the 2026 act lets it write.
Go to a shop if you want to ride the bike around the block before you pay, have the fit and the brakes set by a mechanic, and know whose door to knock on when a cable needs adjusting.
Order online if the model you want is on no floor near you. Check the class and the wattage on the maker's spec sheet first: Tennessee's definition stops at a motor of less than 750 watts (Public Chapter 823).
Why buy from us when the nearest counter is a county away. Every e-bike we sell ships free within the contiguous United States, Tennessee included (shipping policy), and at checkout on October 15, 2026 you could pay by card or with Google Pay.
The warranty is the maker's, and we handle the claim for you: if your bike will not power on, will not charge or shows an error code, our U.S. team coordinates the repair or replacement remotely (refund policy). Questions about an order, a delivery or a warranty go to support@redtailebikes.com.
Not sure which class fits your roads? Send sales@redtailebikes.com the town you ride in and the route you have in mind. The team usually answers within one business day (contact page), and asking costs you nothing.
Riding to work? The commuter guide picks bikes for the daily ride, from an under-$1,500 ladder to lightweight and long-range models, so you can shortlist one before you visit a counter.
See the commuter picksBefore you pay anywhere, find the permanent label that every new e-bike sold in Tennessee must carry, and read the class, the top assisted speed and the wattage off it (Public Chapter 823, section 4).
If you know a Tennessee shop that sells e-bikes and is missing here, or you find an error, write to sales@redtailebikes.com; verified corrections are published. Last verified October 15, 2026.

Sources, limitations and how this page was verified
How the count was reached
Every storefront appears once: 67 verified storefronts, all of them listed on this page.
Where the candidates came from. OpenStreetMap holds 41 entries tagged as bicycle shops in Tennessee; with unnamed entries dropped and duplicates merged, 38 remained, 18 of them with a website. Eight makers' dealer locators supplied 83 storefront rows: Velotric, Trek, Bosch, Aventon, Specialized, Giant, SWFT (at Best Buy) and Pedego.
A Google Maps search asked for bike shops in all 95 counties, in the 104 incorporated places of 5,000 or more and in the 4 largest unincorporated communities, with "electric bike shop" searches in the 30 places of 25,000 or more and in 62 ZIP areas of Nashville and Memphis: 361 searches, which with their follow-up reads turned up 65 candidates to check.
Four of those searches, for Arlington, Fairview, Lakeland and Lake County, returned mostly shops outside Tennessee, so each was run again with a ZIP code spelled out, Tiptonville's for Lake County; the reruns found one more e-bike shop, in Fairview, which Google Maps marks temporarily closed, so it is not counted.
Answers from four AI search engines to the 14 questions people searched named 7 businesses that no source above carried, and each was read on Google Maps: three were open Tennessee businesses and were checked like the rest, two were marked closed, one turned out to be outside Tennessee and one returned only a list of places. Between them, the Maps search and the AI engines supplied 6 of the 67 storefronts listed here that no other source had.
What counted as a verified store
Each candidate's own website had to offer e-bikes for sale in the shop's own words, through a price, a shop category or a sentence that says so. An e-bike that appears only in a repair menu, a rental rate, a ride announcement, a law article or a parts list does not qualify, and neither does a powersports or golf-cart dealer's e-bike page.
When a site would not load, it was tried again in a real browser, through a text reader and in an archived copy. Every open lead with its own website was also read through the pages its sitemap lists, so a shop whose e-bikes sit only in its online catalog is counted too.
A maker's dealer map is the second way in: a store counts when the Aventon, Bosch, Velotric, SWFT, Giant and Pedego map lists its address as an e-bike dealer. Then each store's own Google Maps listing was read: all 67 resolved to one business at the listed address that Google shows as open, and a store Google shows closed, even for the season, is left out.
How to read the listings
The grade at the end of each listing says what confirmed that the store sells e-bikes.
Site checked covers 42 of the 67: the shop's own website offers e-bikes for sale.
Chain site checked covers 12: one website serves several storefronts (for example MOAB, Sun & Ski Sports, Biker's Choice and Green Fleet Bikes), so it proves the business sells e-bikes, and the listing tells you which branch you are visiting.
A maker's dealer map covers 13: a maker lists the store as an authorized e-bike dealer, and the grade links to that maker's locator. Of those 13, 11 have a website that did not show e-bikes for sale in the shop's own words, or could not be read, and 2 have none; for each, the maker's listing is the evidence, and Google Maps shows the store open.

A phone number appears where the sources agree or only one gives one; where a maker's roster and Google Maps disagree, the shop's own site decides, and a listing carries no number when the site settles nothing. Call ahead before a long drive, whatever the grade.
Why the map is thin where it is thin
OpenStreetMap carries 23 of the 67 storefronts listed here, so a directory built from the map alone would miss most of them. The makers' dealer maps and the statewide Google Maps search each found stores the other sources did not.
Google Maps marked 25 of the businesses the search turned up as closed, and 5 of the candidates above as closed for good or for the season; none of them is counted.
Limitations
- 56 candidates remain open leads, named in the research files and not counted: 40 with sites that name no e-bike for sale, 7 that could not be confirmed (six whose sites would not load and one whose only listed site is a social network's front page) and 9 with no website of their own. Each one deserves a phone call; none is a finding that the business does not sell e-bikes.
- Named and not counted: 18 listings that are not bicycle stores (5 motorcycle shops, 3 bike-share systems and stations, 3 vehicle dealers, 2 stores in another trade, 1 cycling club, 1 bicycle factory, 1 online seller with no counter, 1 adventure park and 1 bicycle parking corral), 4 rental or tour outfits and 1 old address of a shop listed at its current one.
- City lines are the Census Bureau's. A store counts toward a row of the coverage table only if it stands inside that city's limits, read from its coordinates, so a store with a Nashville or Knoxville mailing address can sit outside the city.
- The 2026 act is newer than some official summaries. The state Department of Transportation's bicycle-laws page still printed the earlier age and path rules on October 14, 2026, and the official annotated code could not be read from here; the rules above are cited to the enacted acts, Public Chapter 823 and Public Chapter 651.
- This is a floor, not a census. A shop that appears on no maker's dealer map, not in OpenStreetMap and not in Google Maps would not be found here. A Maps search by name can also return a same-named shop in a neighboring state, so every address was checked for Tennessee before a store was counted.
- Demand evidence. The questions this page answers come from Google and Bing autocomplete, Google's related searches, Google's People Also Ask and 20 Reddit posts from eight Tennessee subreddits read on October 14 and 15, 2026, and from AI search engines' answers to 14 questions on October 15, 2026: Google AI Mode answered all 14, Gemini answered all 14, Perplexity answered 11 and Brave answered 3. ChatGPT and Bing's Copilot Search gave no answer that could be read from here. No search-volume figure is used, because the paid keyword tool returned no data for this page.
- What would age this page. It is due for re-checking in April 2027, and sooner if a listed shop closes or moves, if the General Assembly amends the sections cited above, if a city restricts e-bikes under the 2026 act, or when the Census Bureau publishes new local estimates.
- Distances are straight lines. The nearest-store table measures from each city's Census point to each store's coordinates; the road distance is longer.
