Quick Answer: We verified 176 ebike shops in California — 176 storefronts, checked against every city in the state above 50,000 residents — 178 of them. Most were confirmed by reading the shop's own website on August 28, 2026; the rest come from a brand's own dealer roster, and each listing below says which. The clusters are the Bay Area (67 stores), Los Angeles and Orange County (33), and San Diego County (21). 118 of the 178 cities have no verified e-bike store inside city limits, including Anaheim, Stockton and Irvine, so for the largest of those we name the nearest verified shop and how far it is. How we verified this directory
The denominator comes first, because a shop list without one is just a list. We swept all 178 California cities above 50,000 residents, drawn from the U.S. Census Bureau's Vintage 2024 city population estimates (SUB-EST2024).
The candidate pool came from OpenStreetMap's Overpass API, which returned 647 objects tagged as bicycle shops in California, resolving to 598 named businesses. Every one with a website was then checked against that website on August 28, 2026, and the sentence that proves it sells e-bikes is recorded in our source register for each entry.
That left gaps, and we went back for them rather than publishing around them. Twenty California cities above 100,000 residents produced no mapped bicycle shop at all, so each was re-queried individually. Sixteen of the twenty genuinely have none in OpenStreetMap — Bakersfield, a city of 417,000, is represented by a single unnamed point. For those we used Pedego's own California dealer roster, a manufacturer publishing the shops it authorises, which supplied 17 storefronts including Bakersfield.

What a search result cannot tell you about ebike shops in California
Search "ebike shop near me" in California and the results skew hard to the coast. That is not only an algorithm; it is partly what the underlying map data looks like.
When we queried every bicycle shop in California from OpenStreetMap, the coastal metros came back dense — San Francisco returned 21 candidates, San Diego 17, Los Angeles 16, Berkeley 10. Then we checked the twenty cities over 100,000 that returned nothing, and sixteen of them have no bicycle shop mapped at all: Moreno Valley, Oxnard, Pomona, Vallejo, Fairfield, Antioch, Menifee, Jurupa Valley, West Covina, Vacaville, Inglewood, Hesperia, Daly City, Victorville, Garden Grove and Anaheim among them.
Those cities have bike shops. What they do not have is anyone volunteering to map them. So a directory built only from map data would show you a coastal state with an empty interior, and it would be wrong in a way that reads as authoritative.
Bottom line Inland and suburban California is under-mapped rather than under-served. Where the map was empty we went to manufacturers' own dealer lists instead, and this page marks which of the two proves each entry.
How to read the listings
Every store below carries one of three evidence grades, and they are not equivalent.
Site checked — we loaded the shop's own website on August 28, 2026 and it names e-bikes in its own words. 142 of the 176 entries.
Chain site checked — a multi-location retailer where the page we could read belongs to the chain rather than the branch. It proves the chain sells e-bikes; it does not prove that branch is open today. 17 entries.
Brand dealer roster — the store appears on a manufacturer's own published list of authorised dealers, with the address and phone that manufacturer publishes. 17 entries, all from Pedego.
Call before a long drive whatever the grade says. Shops move, and a page that was accurate in August will not be accurate forever.

Read those distances the right way. Anaheim and Irvine are two miles from a verified store, which means the absence is a city-limits technicality rather than a desert. Stockton at 27 miles is the real outlier, and the one where ordering online with proper support genuinely competes with driving.

Two things decide what you can legally ride here, and a shop floor is a bad place to learn them for the first time.
California uses the three-class system, and the class on the sticker governs where the bike may go. Class 1 and Class 2 assist to 20 mph; Class 3 assists to 28 mph and carries extra restrictions, including a minimum rider age and a helmet requirement that Class 1 and 2 do not impose on adults.
The second is the one that catches buyers out: a bike sold as an "e-bike" that exceeds those limits is not an e-bike in California law at all, and reclassifying it changes everything about where it can be ridden. Bottom line Get the class in writing on the receipt rather than on the shop's word alone. It is the single fact that decides which paths, lanes and trails are open to you.
Buying online vs buying in a California shop
A local shop earns its margin on three things: a test ride, assembly done properly, and someone to hand the bike back to when something fails. If one of those matters to you, the drive is worth it, and the listings above will save you the wasted trips.
Where online wins is selection and terms. A shop floor carries what its distributors give it, and if the category you want is a folder or a cargo bike the local answer is often "we can order it" — which is the same wait as ordering it yourself, without the return terms. The rest of what online wins is the paperwork. the warranty and return policy you get are whatever the brand wrote, and they vary far more than the prices do. How many e-bike shops are there in California?
We verified 176 storefronts as of August 28, 2026, checked against 178 California cities above 50,000 residents. That is a floor rather than a census: our candidate pool was 598 named bicycle shops from mapped data plus a manufacturer's dealer roster, and inland California is materially under-mapped, so the true number is higher.
Where are e-bike shops most concentrated in California?
The Bay Area, by a wide margin — 67 verified stores across 26 cities, with San Francisco and Berkeley the densest. Los Angeles and Orange County follow at 33 across 13 cities, then San Diego County at 21 across 8.
Does my California city have an e-bike store?
Check the 178-city table above. Sixty cities have at least one verified store and 118 do not, and for the largest of those we name the nearest verified option and the distance. Anaheim and Irvine sit two miles from one despite having none inside city limits.

Can I trust an online e-bike shop list?
Check what evidence sits behind each entry. Most lists are written by brands to sell their own bikes, and their store rosters age badly. Every entry on this page carries the date it was checked and which source proves it, and where we could not verify a shop it is left out rather than padded in.
The bottom line
California has the deepest e-bike retail network in the country and the most uneven coverage. Sixty of its 178 largest cities have a verified store; 118 do not, and 44 of the stores we found sit in towns too small to have their own guide.
Go local if you want a test ride, a properly assembled bike, and a person to hand it back to. The Bay Area, Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego all have real density, and the listings above give you the address, the phone number and the date we checked.
Buy online if your nearest verified store is a Stockton-style drive, or if the warranty and return terms matter more to you than a showroom. Those terms vary far more between brands than prices do, which is why we publish them.

Limitations
- 176 is a floor rather than a census. It is the number of California storefronts we could evidence on August 28, 2026, from a candidate pool of 598 named bicycle shops. Shops we could not verify are left out rather than padded in, so the real number of e-bike sellers in the state is higher than the one at the top of this page.
- The three evidence grades are not equivalent, and the listings say which applies. 142 entries were confirmed by reading the shop's own website. 17 are multi-location retailers where the page we could read belongs to the chain rather than the branch, which proves the chain sells e-bikes and not that the branch is trading. 17 come from Pedego's own dealer roster, which proves the manufacturer authorises that address and publishes it.
- Inland and suburban California is under-mapped, and that shapes what this page can show. Of the twenty cities above 100,000 residents that returned no mapped bicycle shop, sixteen have none in OpenStreetMap at all — Bakersfield, population 417,000, is one unnamed point. Those cities have shops; nobody has mapped them. Where the map was empty we used a manufacturer's dealer roster, which covers the brands that publish one and nothing else.
- 74 candidates could not be read at all and are excluded rather than counted either way. Nineteen were unreachable, eighteen returned a client-rendered shell containing none of the words we search for, and the rest returned HTTP errors. A site that will not load is not a shop that has closed, and none of these appears as an absence in the city counts.
- One shop was excluded on its own instruction. Atomic Cycles in Los Angeles publishes "NO SERVICE ON E BIKES OR ANY OTHER KIND OF MOTORIZED BIKE/CONTRAPTION WILL BE OFFERED. NO E-BIKES ALLOWED." It is a bicycle shop and it is not an e-bike shop.
- Distances are straight-line from city hall rather than driving distance. The nearest-store table is a sense of scale for deciding whether a trip is worth it, and the real drive is longer everywhere.
- City assignment is partly derived rather than stated. OpenStreetMap left the city blank on 42% of rows, so those were resolved from their coordinates and the working file records which came from the map's own tag and which from our lookup. Regions come from county rather than from a hand-drawn line.
- Redtail sells e-bikes online, and this page recommends shops we have no relationship with. That includes shops in cities where the alternative would be buying from us. The listings carry no ranking, no sponsored placement and no preference for the brands we stock.
This page expires when any of these change: A listed shop closes, moves or stops selling e-bikes; California changes its class statute; the Census publishes a new vintage of city estimates; or OpenStreetMap's coverage of inland California improves enough to change the candidate pool.
