How we verified this directory The denominator came first: all 178 California cities above 50,000 residents, from the Census Bureau's Vintage 2024 estimates. The candidate pool came from OpenStreetMap, 647 mapped objects resolving to 598 named bicycle shops, plus Pedego's own California dealer roster.
Each candidate with a website was read on that website on August 28, 2026 and the sentence that proved it was recorded. Shops that could not be verified are left out rather than padded in, and every listing carries the grade that evidences it. Re-verified every six months.
Quick Answer California has 353 verified e-bike storefronts as of October 10, 2026, counted across all 178 cities above 50,000 residents plus the smaller towns that carry a verified shop. The Bay Area is the deepest cluster; 76 of the 178 cities have neither a verified store nor a page of their own.
State law recognizes Class 1, 2 and 3 e-bikes with motors of 750 watts or less, with no license, registration or insurance required for any of them. If the nearest store is a drive, Redtail ships free within the contiguous United States. For the statute detail, read California e-bike laws.
California has the deepest e-bike retail network in the country and the most uneven coverage in it. Ninety-one of its 178 cities above 50,000 residents have at least one verified store and eleven more have their own page whose honest answer is none, so 102 are covered and 76 have neither, and 43 more stores sit in towns too small for the table.

California eBike Law — 2026 Quick Reference
An e-bike that meets California's statutory definition is a bicycle: no license, no registration, no insurance. Cross any one of these limits and it is a motor vehicle instead, and none of the bicycle access applies to it. Every rule below quotes the section it comes from.
- Motor power, 750 watts maximum. Vehicle Code § 312.5(a) defines an electric bicycle as "a bicycle equipped with fully operable pedals and an electric motor that does not exceed 750 watts of power." Above that, it is not an electric bicycle in California law.
- Working pedals required. The same subdivision requires "fully operable pedals" (§ 312.5(a)). A machine sold as an e-bike with no functioning pedals is not one.
- Class 1, pedal assist to 20 mph. A class 1 e-bike is pedal-assisted only and "ceases to provide assistance when the bicycle reaches the speed of 20 miles per hour" (§ 312.5(a)(1)).
- Class 2, throttle to 20 mph. A class 2 e-bike has a motor "that may be used exclusively to propel the bicycle" and is "not capable of providing assistance when the bicycle reaches the speed of 20 miles per hour" (§ 312.5(a)(2)).
- Class 3, pedal assist to 28 mph, with a speedometer. A class 3 e-bike "ceases to provide assistance when the bicycle reaches the speed of 28 miles per hour, and equipped with a speedometer" (§ 312.5(a)(3)).
- Class 3 has a minimum age of 16. "A person under 16 years of age shall not operate a class 3 electric bicycle" (§ 21213(a)). There is no learner pathway below it.
- Class 3 riders wear a helmet at every age. No person may operate or ride a class 3 e-bike on a street, bikeway or public bicycle path "unless that person is wearing a properly fitted and fastened bicycle helmet" meeting ASTM or CPSC standards (§ 21213(b)).
- Under 18 wear a helmet on any bicycle. "A person under 18 years of age shall not operate a bicycle … unless they are wearing a properly fitted and fastened bicycle helmet" (§ 21212(a)). That covers class 1 and class 2 as well.
Get the class in writing. The class on the sticker decides which paths, lanes and trails are open to the bike, and it is the one fact a shop floor is a bad place to learn for the first time. Ask for it on the receipt rather than on the salesperson's word, and read California e-bike laws for the city-by-city detail.

Oakland's shops are evidenced partly by a source the map does not hold. Alameda County's community power agency runs an e-bike rebate and must publish which retailers may redeem it, and its 29-shop roster puts seven inside Oakland on the Census check.
A seventh, King Kog at 327 17th Street, is on that roster and its own site returned HTTP 503, so it is not counted. Every Oakland shop, its hours, the $400 to $1,500 county rebate and the sidewalk rule written in wheel diameter sits on its own page.

Read those distances the right way. Several of these cities sit a couple of miles from a verified store, so the absence is a city-limits technicality rather than a desert. Stockton at 27 miles is the real outlier, and the one where ordering online with proper support genuinely competes with driving.

A local shop earns its margin on three things: a test ride, assembly done properly, and someone to hand the bike back to when something fails. If one of those matters to you, the drive is worth it, and the listings above will save you the wasted trips.
Where online wins is selection and terms. A shop floor carries what its distributors give it, and a brand's own dealer roster shows how thin some categories are outside the metros.
If the category you want is a folder or a cargo bike, the local answer is often an order slip, which is the same wait as ordering it yourself without the return terms. Redtail's folding e-bikes and cargo e-bikes are the two ranges Californian buyers most often find missing from a showroom floor.
The rest of what online wins is the paperwork. The warranty and return policy you get are whatever the brand wrote, and they vary far more than the prices do. How many e-bike shops are there in California?
353 as of October 10, 2026, counted across all 178 California cities above 50,000 residents plus the smaller towns that carry one. That is a floor rather than a census. The candidate pool was 598 named bicycle shops from mapped data plus a manufacturer's dealer roster, and inland California is materially under-mapped, so the true number is higher.
Where are e-bike shops most concentrated in California?
The Bay Area, by a wide margin: 85 of the storefronts listed here sit across 35 Bay Area cities, by Census population the densest cluster in the state, with San Francisco and Berkeley leading it. Los Angeles and Orange County follow at 80 across 33 cities, then San Diego County at 36 across 11.
Does my California city have an e-bike store?
Check the 178-city table above. Ninety-one cities have at least one verified store, eleven more have their own page whose honest answer is none, 76 have neither, and the nearest verified option is named for the largest of those.
Fontana, at 218,455 residents, is now the largest city with none inside its limits. Its own page went live on September 11, 2026 with the working: twenty-four candidates, one bicycle shop trading in the city, and no business inside the limits publishing that it sells electric bikes. San Bernardino held that place until its own page went live the same day with two verified stores.
Are e-bikes legal in California, and which class can I ride?
Yes, under the three-class system. Class 1 and Class 2 assist to 20 mph; Class 3 assists to 28 mph, carries a minimum rider age of 16 and requires a helmet at every age. A bike that exceeds those limits is not legally an e-bike here at all. The California e-bike law guide has the statute detail.
What should I ask a California e-bike shop before buying?
Four things: the bike's class in writing, whether the battery carries a UL listing, what the warranty covers and for how long, and who does the servicing if something fails. The last one matters most at a chain, where the branch may not be the entity that holds your warranty.
Can I trust an online e-bike shop list?
Check what evidence sits behind each entry. Most lists are written by brands to sell their own bikes, and their store rosters age badly. Every entry here carries the date it was checked and the source that proves it, and a shop that could not be verified is left out rather than padded in.

Buy online if the nearest verified store is a Stockton-style drive, or if the warranty and return terms matter more than a showroom. Those terms vary far more between brands than prices do, which is why Redtail publishes them.

How to read the listings
Every store below carries an evidence grade, and they are not equivalent. The three counts that follow describe the 175 entries the August 28, 2026 statewide sweep produced; the city-depth passes since have added listings that carry their own dated markers, and the page lists 202 in all.
Site checked — we loaded the shop's own website on August 28, 2026 and it names e-bikes in its own words. 141 of that sweep's 175 entries.
Chain site checked — a multi-location retailer where the page we could read belongs to the chain rather than the branch. It proves the chain sells e-bikes; it does not prove that branch is open today. 17 of that sweep's entries.
Brand dealer roster — the store appears on a manufacturer's own published list of authorized dealers, with the address and phone that manufacturer publishes. 17 of that sweep's entries, all from Pedego.
Call before a long drive whatever the grade says. Shops move, and a page that was accurate in August will not be accurate forever.
Why the map is thinner inland
Search for ebike shops California riders can reach and the results skew hard to the coast. That is not only an algorithm; it is partly what the underlying map data looks like.
Queried across every bicycle shop in California in OpenStreetMap, the coastal metros came back dense — San Francisco returned 21 candidates, San Diego 17, Los Angeles 16, Berkeley 10. Then we checked the twenty cities over 100,000 that returned nothing, and sixteen of them have no bicycle shop mapped at all: Moreno Valley, Oxnard, Pomona, Vallejo, Fairfield, Antioch, Menifee, Jurupa Valley, West Covina, Vacaville, Inglewood, Hesperia, Daly City, Victorville, Garden Grove and Anaheim among them.
Those cities have bike shops. What they do not have is anyone volunteering to map them. So a directory built only from map data would show a coastal state with an empty interior, and it would be wrong in a way that reads as authoritative.
Moreno Valley is the measured case. The map returns no bicycle retailer inside its boundary at all, and the city has three bike shops — one of which publishes an electric-bike catalog of its own. Its own page shows how the other routes found them.
Bottom line Inland and suburban California is under-mapped rather than under-served. Where the map was empty we went to manufacturers' own dealer lists instead, and this page marks which of the two proves each entry.

Every count on this page is re-derived whenever a city moves to its own page, most recently on October 10, 2026, and the figures of 175 and 214 are both superseded. One method produces one number: for each city, the count comes from that city's own live directory page where one exists, and otherwise from the distinct storefronts listed here, with towns below the 50,000 threshold counted separately and labelled. The result today is 352 storefronts: 260 from seventy-six city pages, 49 from this page's own listings, and 43 in smaller towns. Torrance moved from a dash in the table above to its own page on September 30, 2026, and took the total from 288 to 291: twenty-four businesses considered, twenty-one of them inside the city, and three stores inside the city limits, Torrance Bikes, GO Ebikes and The DropOut Cyclery. Oxnard's page went live the same day and moved nothing — an eight-route harvest reached thirty-two candidates, and the only business inside the city limits whose own words name an electric bike rents one rather than selling it. Huntington Beach's page went live on September 12 and moved the total from 226 to 239 — the largest single move any city page has made on this hub, because a seven-route harvest reached forty candidates in a city the August sweep had left with no page at all, and thirteen of them publish, in their own words, that they sell electric bikes. The city page count was then twenty-three and the storefront total 239; Glendale's page took them to twenty-four and 240 on September 13, Ontario's to twenty-five and 243 on September 14, Elk Grove's to twenty-six and 246 on September 15, Santa Rosa's to twenty-seven and 253 on September 16, Rancho Cucamonga's to twenty-eight and 254 on September 17, Garden Grove's to twenty-nine and 256 the same day, Oceanside's to thirty and 262 later that day, Lancaster's to thirty-one and 265 on September 19, and Roseville's to thirty-two and 270 on September 20. Long Beach E-Bikes was read on its own site on September 1, returned HTTP 402 when re-checked early in the month, and answered again on September 25, 2026, when its store locator was re-read; the listing links the live site again.
- Sixteen cities have been re-checked in depth since the August 28 statewide sweep, and their own pages are the authority for them. Fremont and Santa Clarita on September 10, Sacramento and Fresno on August 31, Long Beach on September 2, and Anaheim, Bakersfield, Oakland, Riverside and Stockton on September 3, with San Jose, San Francisco, Irvine, Santa Ana, Los Angeles and San Diego earlier. Each pass found more than the statewide sweep did: San Jose went from two storefronts to seven, Oakland from three to six, Long Beach from two to seven, Anaheim from none to four. Stockton's dash was confirmed rather than filled, because its best-known bike shop sits in unincorporated San Joaquin County. Two Sacramento sections had to be merged, the city having entered the pool under two casings.

One listing was withdrawn on August 30, 2026, and the count above reflects it. The Bike Hut, San Francisco, was listed here on August 28 as a verified e-bike seller. Its own site says the opposite — "We don't have any electric bikes or scooters" — and our check had read the phrase "electric bikes" without reading the sentence around it.
The listing is gone, and the count that day was re-cut from 176 to 175. The classifier now reads a negation attached to have as well as to sell or service, and normalises typographic apostrophes, because "don’t" with a curly quote had been failing to match at all.

265 is a floor rather than a census. It rests on the California storefronts we could evidence from August 28, 2026 onward, from a candidate pool of 598 named bicycle shops, with thirty-two cities re-read on their own pages since. Shops we could not verify are left out rather than padded in, so the real number of e-bike sellers in the state is higher than the one at the top of this page.
How much higher, measured once: San Jose went from two to seven. On August 30, 2026 we re-swept that one city in depth for its own guide, and five storefronts the statewide pass had missed cleared the same evidence standard. Two are mapped with no website, so no automated check could reach them; one renders its site in the browser and returned no readable text on the first route; one publishes its store page under a chain domain; and one appears on no map or roster we hold at all. The count at the top of this page is dated August 28 and is not restated here, because the other 177 cities have not had that treatment yet — but San Jose is the measure of what the deep pass finds, and it found 3.5x. 6. The evidence grades are not equivalent, and each listing says which applies. Of the 176 entries the August 28, 2026 statewide sweep produced, 142 were confirmed by reading the shop's own website, 17 are multi-location retailers where the page we could read belongs to the chain rather than the branch, which proves the chain sells e-bikes and not that the branch is trading, and 17 come from Pedego's own dealer roster, which proves the manufacturer authorizes that address and publishes it. The page now lists 202 storefronts, the difference being the city-depth passes named in item 3; those listings carry their own grade markers and have not been re-tallied into this three-way split. 7. Inland and suburban California is under-mapped, and that shapes what this page can show. Of the twenty cities above 100,000 residents that returned no mapped bicycle shop, sixteen have none in OpenStreetMap at all — Bakersfield, population 417,000, is one unnamed point. Those cities have shops; nobody has mapped them. Where the map was empty we used a manufacturer's dealer roster, which covers the brands that publish one and nothing else. 8. 74 candidates could not be read at all and are excluded rather than counted either way. Nineteen were unreachable, eighteen returned a client-rendered shell containing none of the words we search for, and the rest returned HTTP errors. A site that will not load is not a shop that has closed, and none of these appears as an absence in the city counts. 9. Pacific E-Bike's website was down in early September and is back. On September 25, 2026 the site answered again, and its own contact page publishes 2735 San Pablo Ave, Berkeley 94702 and a number to text; the listing follows that page. Both addresses sit inside Berkeley on the Census geocoder, so Berkeley's count is unchanged. 10. Two street numbers on this page were wrong and are corrected. Adams Avenue Bicycles is at 2602 Adams Avenue, not 2606, and Bicycle Warehouse Pacific Beach is at 4670 Santa Fe Street, not 4650. Both were read on each shop's own website on September 7, 2026, and Bicycle Warehouse publishes 4670 in its page's structured data as well as its text. The San Diego city directory already carried both correctly. 11. One shop was excluded on its own instruction. Atomic Cycles in Los Angeles publishes "NO SERVICE ON E BIKES OR ANY OTHER KIND OF MOTORIZED BIKE/CONTRAPTION WILL BE OFFERED. NO E-BIKES ALLOWED." It is a bicycle shop and it is not an e-bike shop. 12. Distances are straight-line from city hall rather than driving distance. The nearest-store table is a sense of scale for deciding whether a trip is worth it, and the real drive is longer everywhere. 13. City assignment is partly derived rather than stated. OpenStreetMap left the city blank on 42% of rows, so those were resolved from their coordinates and the working file records which came from the map's own tag and which from our lookup. Regions come from county rather than from a hand-drawn line. 14. Redtail sells e-bikes online, and this page recommends shops we have no relationship with. That includes shops in cities where the alternative would be buying from us. The listings carry no ranking, no sponsored placement and no preference for the brands we stock.
