Seven e-bike makers' dealer maps, four store locators, Superpages, OpenStreetMap, 192 Google Maps searches, 16 answer-engine questions and 13 Reddit threads named 126 businesses; each one's own website, where it had one, was read. The Census geocoder and Mecklenburg County's city-limit map placed every address.
A store is listed when its own website sells e-bikes or a maker names it as an e-bike dealer. Closed stores, rentals, repair-only and mobile services, stores outside the city and stores whose pages name no e-bike are not. Verified October 21, 2026; next check April 2027.
Quick Answer
Twelve e-bike shops in Charlotte sell from storefronts inside the city limits, verified October 21, 2026: three in South Inner, two each in East Inner and South Outer, and one in each of five other planning areas. The nearest to Trade and Tryon are Bicycle Sport Uptown and The Spoke Easy, 1.2 miles away; the farthest is 13.4 miles out.
Today North Carolina counts an e-bike as a bicycle when its motor is no more than 750 watts and it goes no faster than 20 mph on the motor alone; from December 1, 2026, the 750-watt cap stays and three classes replace the 20 mph test. The Charlotte buying guide screens bikes for the city, and the North Carolina law page covers the state code.
Charlotte, North Carolina, is a city of 964,784 people in the Census Bureau's 2025 estimate, on 312.1 square miles of land that the City divides into 15 Community Planning Areas. Seven of its e-bike stores sit within four miles of Uptown; the other five lie out along Northlake, Monroe Road and the southern edge of the city.

Charlotte picks by areaCATS — eBikes on the LYNX Blue Line and CATS Buses
CATS carries bikes free, on racks inside every LYNX light rail car and on the front of every bus, but its rules add a line you should read first if you ride an e-bike: "No motorized bikes are allowed on the racks" (CATS, Bicycles, read October 21, 2026). Call CATS at 704-336-7433 before you build a commute around a rack.
| Where | What CATS provides | The rule |
|---|---|---|
| LYNX Blue Line light rail | "Bike racks are on the inside of each light rail vehicle" | "Stand by your bike for the duration of the ride" |
| Every CATS bus | A rack on the front | "Bikes are not allowed on the inside of CATS buses" |
| Both | "your bike rides free!" | "No motorized bikes are allowed on the racks"; children under 12 with a bike must ride with an adult |
The page does not say whether "motorized" reaches a pedal-assist bike, and North Carolina's code keeps the electric assisted bicycle out of its "motor vehicle" definition (§ 20-4.01(23)). So the answer sits with CATS, by phone or at telltransit@charlottenc.gov.
Owners on r/Charlotte describe taking e-bikes onto the light rail outside peak hours and standing with them by the doors (August 2026 thread). That is their experience, not a CATS policy, and it does not cover the bus racks.
Rail or bus in your plan? Ask CATS first. Its rack rule bars motorized bikes, and a bus will not take any bike inside.
Trail Access — the Rail Trail, Little Sugar Creek and the County Greenways
WSOC, The Charlotte Ledger and WFAE all report a 20 mph limit on every Mecklenburg County greenway since September 2026 (WSOC, September 18, 2026), one that "applies to all modes of transportation" (The Charlotte Ledger). The County's map counts 121.7 miles of open greenway, urban trail and dirt trail, 71.5 of them inside Charlotte (GreenwayTrails layer).
- Little Sugar Creek Greenway. 16.4 miles of open trail on the County's map, 12.3 of them in the city; The Charlotte Ledger reports that Park and Recreation painted "20 mph speed limit" on 136 sections of it.
- The Rail Trail. The City describes an "11-mile Rail Trail alignment" from Sugar Creek Station to Arrowood Station, with "only a few key gaps remaining" and "over 2,000 trail users per day in some locations" (City of Charlotte, Rail Trail). The County maps 7.5 miles of it as open trail.
- McAlpine Creek, Mallard Creek and the Cross Charlotte Trail. 7.0, 4.6 and 4.7 miles of open trail on the County's map, almost all of it inside the city.
- The posted rules. Park and Recreation's greenway rules sheet says "No motorized vehicles allowed on greenway unless authorized by Park and Recreation," "Children under 16 years of age must wear helmet when riding bicycles," and "Bicycle lights and reflectors are required from dusk to dawn" (Rules and Regulations sheet).
- From December 1, 2026. New § 20-171.3(a) will permit e-bikes "on all roadways, bicycle lanes, and multiuse paths," except where a city or county regulates them under § 160A-300.2 or § 153A-245.1 (S.L. 2026-46, § 19).
Does "motorized vehicles" reach an e-bike? The rules sheet does not define the term, and in October 2026 the County's commissioners were weighing "how to manage fast-moving e-bikes on county greenways" (WFAE, October 9, 2026). Park and Recreation Director Nick Walker told WFAE the County paired the limit "with signs, markings, and targeted education, not enforcement alone," so ride at 20 mph or less and watch for new signs.
North Carolina eBike Laws — What Makes an eBike Legal in Charlotte
Your e-bike rides Charlotte's streets as a bicycle when it fits North Carolina's "electric assisted bicycle." Through November 30, 2026, G.S. 20-4.01(7a) sets one test: fully operable pedals, a motor of "no more than 750 watts," and "no greater than 20 miles per hour" on the motor alone. On December 1, 2026, the 750-watt cap stays, three classes take the speed test's place, and Class 3 assists to 28 mph.
- Today's definition. An electric assisted bicycle has "two or three wheels," a seat or saddle, "fully operable pedals for human propulsion, and an electric motor of no more than 750 watts, whose maximum speed on a level surface when powered solely by such a motor is no greater than 20 miles per hour" (§ 20-4.01(7a)). Charlotte's code repeats it word for word (§ 14-1).
- From December 1, 2026. Session Law 2026-46, § 19 keeps the 750-watt motor and sorts e-bikes into Class 1 (pedal assist that stops at 20 mph), Class 2 (a motor that "may propel the bicycle without pedaling" to 20 mph) and Class 3 (pedal assist to 28 mph). Section 19(f): "This section becomes effective December 1, 2026."
- No license, plate or insurance. The code's "motor vehicle" definition "shall not include mopeds or electric assisted bicycles" (§ 20-4.01(23)), and the City Attorney's August 3, 2026 briefing to Council marks license, registration and insurance "NO" for an electric assisted bike (City of Charlotte, E-Bikes presentation).
- Helmets. A parent may not knowingly let a child under 16 ride a bicycle without one (§ 20-171.9(a)), and Charlotte's § 14-10 names the electric assisted bicycle in the same under-16 rule. From December 1, 2026, anyone under 18 on a Class 3 "shall wear a helmet that meets federal safety standards" (new § 20-171.3(b)).
- Age. North Carolina sets no minimum age for an e-bike rider: the City Attorney's comparison table reads "Minimum Age: None statewide."
- Sidewalks. Charlotte lets an e-bike ride a sidewalk at "no more than 15 miles per hour" (§ 14-130), except "within the area bounded by Church Street, Stonewall Street, College Street and 7th Street," where bicycles, e-bikes and e-scooters stay off (§ 14-251).
- Brakes, impoundment and the fine. Your bike needs "a braking system in sufficient working order" (§ 14-253), and the City may impound one ridden or parked against Chapter 14 (§ 14-256). A violation carries a $25 civil penalty, with a $25 late fee if it is not paid or appealed within 30 days (§ 14-61).
Two maps of the no-sidewalk zone. CDOT's shared-mobility page draws the Uptown zone's southern edge at Brooklyn Village Avenue, while § 14-251 names Stonewall Street. The code is the rule a citation rests on, so stay off the sidewalks inside Church, Stonewall, College and 7th. A September 2026 news report credited the rule to "§ 14-286" (Hoodline); the section is § 14-251, adopted by Ordinance 9490 on January 14, 2019.
Buying before December 1? Check the motor rating first. Past 750 watts, or past 20 mph on the motor alone, a bike falls outside today's definition, and riding it on a Charlotte street as a bicycle is a risk you carry.
Shopping under $1,000? That guide reads what 55 budget listings publish, flags the motors that miss the bicycle line, and names seven picks for five kinds of rider.
Compare e-bikes under $1,000What may change next. On June 30, 2026 Mayor Lyles issued a policy referral on public safety concerns about e-bikes.
On September 8 the City Attorney's Office recommended adding classes that mirror state law, restricting Class 2 and 3 e-bikes for riders "aged 16 years old and younger," requiring helmets under 18 on Class 1 and 2, and lamps at night for all riders (September 8 presentation). As of October 21, 2026, the Council had adopted none of it.
Where to Ride Your eBike in Charlotte
The City's bike-lane map holds 180.3 street miles of bike lanes, but only 9.5 of those miles are separated from traffic and 10.4 buffered (Bike_Lanes layer, all 1,470 segments, read October 21, 2026). Add 31.1 miles of shared-use paths (Shared_Use_Paths layer) and the County's greenways, and plan your first rides along the paths.
Choosing a bike for these streets? Keep it inside § 20-4.01(7a): a motor of 750 watts or less and 20 mph or less on the motor alone keeps it a bicycle today, and it fits Class 1 or Class 2 when the classes arrive on December 1, 2026.
Bird and Lime e-bikes
Bird and Lime each hold a City permit for 150 e-bikes and 900 e-scooters, ridden from 5 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. You must be "at least 18 years old with a valid driver's license" to ride one, and the e-bikes are "limited to 20 mph" (CDOT, Shared Mobility Program, read October 21, 2026).
The City's Community Access Program takes 30% off trips that start in its Community Access Zones, and Bird and Lime give you 50% off if you are enrolled in a qualifying assistance program (City News). The older Charlotte Joy Rides program ended on December 31, 2024 (City News).
Why buy from Redtail
No Charlotte store holds your model? Every e-bike Redtail sells ships free within the contiguous United States (shipping policy), "prepared and dispatched within 1–3 business days of confirmation," and most e-bikes "arrive within 5–10 business days after dispatch."
Photograph the carton before you open it. Damage from transit reported "within 48 hours of delivery" is a claim Redtail files with the carrier for you (How Buying Works), and a bike that will not power on or charge is "covered under manufacturer warranty," with the repair or replacement coordinated for you (refund policy).
You get "US support by phone or email, before and after you buy" (shipping policy): call (213) 444-4020, or reach support or sales through the contact page, typically answered within one business day, and voicemails get a call back. Checkout takes Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and the terms of service name the company behind the store.
Frequently Asked Questions — Charlotte, NC eBikes
Where can you buy an e-bike in Charlotte?
You can buy one at 12 stores inside the city limits, verified October 21, 2026: three in the South Inner planning area, two each in East Inner and South Outer, and one each in North Inner, West Inner, West Middle, South Middle and East Middle & Outer.
Seven are bicycle shops, Gear Goat Xchg is a gear exchange, REB Charlotte sells e-bikes beside e-boards and e-scooters, and REI, Sun & Ski Sports and Best Buy are chain stores. If you are weighing a local store against buying online, read where to buy an e-bike.
Are e-bikes legal in Charlotte?
Yes, when the bike fits North Carolina's "electric assisted bicycle." Through November 30, 2026, that means working pedals, a motor of "no more than 750 watts," and "no greater than 20 miles per hour" on the motor alone (G.S. 20-4.01(7a)). The definition says nothing about a throttle, so your throttle bike fits if it stays inside those limits.
From December 1, 2026, the 750-watt cap stays and the state sorts e-bikes into Class 1, 2 and 3, and Class 2 is the throttle class. Charlotte adds a 15 mph sidewalk limit and an Uptown sidewalk ban.
Do you need a license, registration or insurance for an e-bike in North Carolina?
No. The state code keeps electric assisted bicycles out of its "motor vehicle" definition (§ 20-4.01(23)), and the City Attorney's August 3, 2026 table marks license, registration and insurance "NO" for one, against "YES" for a moped's registration and insurance (City of Charlotte presentation). That holds while the bike fits the state's definition: 750 watts and 20 mph on the motor alone through November 30, 2026, then 750 watts and one of the three classes.
Do you have to wear a helmet on an e-bike in North Carolina?
If you are under 16, yes: the state bars a parent from knowingly letting a child under 16 ride without one (§ 20-171.9(a)), and Charlotte's § 14-10 applies the same age to e-bikes. From December 1, 2026, anyone under 18 on a Class 3 must wear one under new § 20-171.3(b). Above those ages the state leaves the choice to you.
Can you ride an e-bike on Charlotte's greenways?
The County's posted rules do not settle it. WSOC, The Charlotte Ledger and WFAE report a 20 mph limit for everyone on its greenways since September 2026, stenciled at 136 spots along Little Sugar Creek Greenway (The Charlotte Ledger), while its rules sheet still bars "motorized vehicles" unless Park and Recreation authorizes them, without defining the term.
If you ride there, hold 20 mph or less. From December 1, 2026, state law permits e-bikes on multiuse paths unless a city or county regulates them.
Can you take an e-bike on the LYNX light rail?
CATS puts bike racks inside every light rail car, but its rules say "No motorized bikes are allowed on the racks," and they do not say whether a pedal-assist bike counts (CATS, Bicycles). Owners on r/Charlotte describe riding the train with e-bikes off-peak, standing by the doors. Call CATS at 704-336-7433 before you count on it.
Does Charlotte have bike share?
Yes, through two private operators. Bird and Lime each run up to 150 e-bikes under a City permit, ridden from 5 a.m. to 1:30 a.m.; you must be "at least 18 years old with a valid driver's license," and the e-bikes are limited to 20 mph (CDOT). Trips that start in the City's Community Access Zones get 30% off.
Do bike shops in Charlotte fix electric bikes?
Several do, on their own service pages. The Spoke Easy prices e-bike tune-ups from $80 to $200 and comes to you for $20 more. Charlotte Cycles fixes mechanical problems on most e-bikes, but electrical systems only on brands it sells. REB Charlotte charges $50 for an e-bike tire change or brake bleed.
Gearsmith Bikes, a mobile shop, warns that most e-bike repairs "will be done off-site due to the complexity of the electronics." In Pineville, Dick's Bicycle Repair Shop repairs "all makes and models of bikes and e-bikes." The maintenance guide covers the checks you can make between visits.

Sources, limitations and how this page was verified
The denominator
Every business that any source tied to Charlotte became a lead: 126 in all, read on October 21, 2026. Twelve sell e-bikes from a storefront inside the city.
The rest are outside the city line (46), not bicycle stores (28), closed (9), name no e-bike on their own pages (9), left no trace (5), have no storefront (5), duplicate another lead (4), list an address the shop has left (3), rent without selling (3), list no website (1) or could not be checked (1).
No trace means neither Google Maps nor a web search shows the business trading where its listing says. Bikesource on Park Road, a Specialized dealer, is not counted: its own pages name no e-bike, and Specialized's store data does not list it as an e-bike retailer. Call it at 704-525-8410 to ask.
The sources, and what each one could and could not do
Makers' maps. Seven dealer rosters (Aventon, Bosch, Giant, Pedego, Specialized, Trek, Velotric) and four store locators (Lectric, Magnum, QuietKat, SWFT) were read to 17 miles out. A roster names a dealer, not what the floor holds that day.
Google Maps. Two searches for each of 33 ZIP areas and 63 neighborhoods inside the city, each scrolled to the end, turned up 488 business cards; 127 place and address panels were then read for status, hours and what stands at an address now.
Answer engines and forums. Sixteen questions went to Claude's web search, and 13 Charlotte Reddit threads were read whole. Every shop they named became a lead, never a verdict.
Each shop's own website was read with a plain request, a headless browser or, where both were refused, a text reader. A product list with prices, a stock line or the shop's own sentence counts as evidence; a menu entry alone does not.
City limits
The Census Geocoder placed all 12 street addresses in Charlotte city, and Mecklenburg County's jurisdictions map agrees for every one. Planning areas come from the City's own layer, and distances run in a straight line from the crossing of Trade and Tryon Streets (OpenStreetMap node 172358289).
Limitations
- Stock changes: a counted store sold e-bikes on October 21, 2026, and may not have your model the day you visit.
- Hours are each store's own, as printed on October 21, 2026; for REI, Gear Goat Xchg, Trek South Charlotte and Sun & Ski Sports, Google Maps' panel shows the same hours.
- REI's store pages, read through a text reader on October 21, 2026, give the hours and an E-Bike Tune among the bike-shop services but name no e-bike in stock, so the card rests on Bosch's dealer map for sales.
- Riese & Müller's dealer map served no US stores to our reader. Its one Charlotte listing elsewhere, at 1425 Winnifred Street, leads to a web domain that now serves an unrelated site, and Google Maps shows no e-bike store at that address.
- Mecklenburg County's written greenway rules were not found on its own site; the 20 mph limit is reported here from WSOC, The Charlotte Ledger and WFAE, and the rules sheet is a copy hosted by the Town of Cornelius.
- North Carolina's statute site refused direct requests on October 21, 2026; G.S. 20-4.01, G.S. 20-171.9 and Session Law 2026-46 were read through a reader service.
What would age this page, and when to re-check
It is re-checked when Session Law 2026-46 takes effect on December 1, 2026, if the Council adopts any of the September 8 recommendations, if the County publishes new greenway rules, if CATS changes its rack rule, if a listed store closes, moves or stops selling e-bikes, and by April 2027 at the latest.
