2,438 trails · 2,423 miles in 97 of Georgia's 159 counties · 503 miles open to Class 1 · 11 WMA e-bike notes read · Rules verified October 29 to 31, 2026
Quick Answer: Georgia lets Class 1 and 2 e-bikes ride bike and shared use paths unless the manager bars them, keeps Class 3 beside highways unless permitted, and leaves dirt trails closed to motor vehicles to the manager. State park trails take Class 1 only. Of 2,423 mapped miles, 503 are open to Class 1 and 285 to Class 3.
Every e-bike in our full range ships free to Georgia within the contiguous United States.
The Cochran Shoals Trail in the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, a crushed-stone fitness loop where the superintendent's compendium allows e-bikes where traditional bicycles are allowed, in a scene generated with Playcut from a photograph of the trail by Thomson200.

Each line is a trail or path from Georgia DNR's state park and WMA records, the Atlanta Regional Commission's inventory, Atlanta BeltLine, Inc., Forsyth County, the USDA Forest Service, the National Park Service or OpenStreetMap, colored by the e-bike rule that governs it. The numbers mark Georgia's twelve regional commissions, in the order the regions appear below.
Georgia's e-bike law opens the state's bike paths to a Class 1 or 2 and lets the city, county or state agency that runs each one close it.
O.C.G.A. § 40-6-303(a)(1) says "Any class I electric assisted bicycle or class II electric assisted bicycle shall be authorized to be operated on any bicycle path or shared use path where bicycles are permitted to be operated; provided, however, that a local authority or state agency may prohibit the operation of a class I electric assisted bicycle or class II electric assisted bicycle on any bicycle path or shared use path within its jurisdiction."
Paragraph (2) sets the Class 3 line: "No class III electric assisted bicycle shall be operated on a bicycle path or shared use path unless such path is within or adjacent to a highway or unless operation of such device is permitted on such path by the local authority or state agency having jurisdiction over such path."
| Your e-bike | On a bicycle or shared use path, by default | What the path's manager may do |
|---|---|---|
| Class 1 or Class 2 | Rides it where bicycles are permitted (§ 40-6-303(a)(1)) | Prohibit it ((a)(1)) |
| Class 3 | Rides it only within or beside a highway (§ 40-6-303(a)(2)) | Permit it elsewhere ((a)(2)) |
| Any class, on a natural-surface trail designated for nonmotorized vehicles | No default: the subsection does not apply (§ 40-6-303(a)(3)) | Decide which devices ride ((a)(3)) |
The General Assembly wrote those rules in HB 454, Act 56 of 2019, in force since July 1, 2019. Of every bill filed since, through the 2026 sessions, only HB 497 of 2021, a Code Revision act, has touched § 40-6-303, and it changed paragraph (b)'s wording, not the path rules.
227 managers share that power across this map. Each trail below carries its manager's name and, where the manager's rule could be read, what that rule says about e-bikes, with a link to it. The same rows sit in the trail register, so you can check any ride trail by trail.
For the rest of Georgia's e-bike law, from equipment to road rules, read Georgia e-bike laws. To compare Georgia's trail rules with other states', open bike trails by state.
Riding across the line? The same trail-by-trail map exists for Florida bike trails on Georgia's southern border, and for Arkansas, Texas, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Maine, New York, Colorado, Utah, Oregon and Washington State. Our national guide to e-bike trails near you shows how to find any trail's manager in the US.
Takeaway
A Class 1 e-bike reaches the most of Georgia: 503 mapped miles, against 330 for a Class 2 and 285 for a Class 3. Georgia's state park trails take a Class 1 alone, and the national forest closes every trail its Motor Vehicle Use Map leaves off, whatever your class.
56% of the mapped miles read gray, and most of that gray lies under the 160 cities, towns and counties whose own e-bike rule could not be read: 853.0 miles in all, 102 of them on Peachtree City's paths. The downloadable register says why each gray trail is gray.

How to read the map
Find your trail's color, then find its manager. Green means you may ride any class, blue a Class 1 or 2, orange a Class 1 alone, and dashed red means a published rule or a federal regulation keeps your e-bike off. Purple marks the park trails open to every class under the Park Service's pedaling rule, so on a Class 2, keep pedaling.
Gray holds three kinds of trail: one whose rule reads two ways, with both readings printed below; one whose manager's rule could not be read or is not posted; and private or nonprofit land, where the owner decides. The register names the case for each.
A color is the rule, and the sign at the trailhead still binds you. A hunting-season closure on a WMA, a seasonal date on the forest's motor vehicle map or a posted speed limit applies on top of the color. The region tables print the limits each rule sets: 15 mph on Forsyth County's Big Creek Greenway and on Glynn County's paths, and 20 mph with no rider under 18 on Woodstock's trails.
Your bike's label tells you its class. § 40-6-302(a) says "Any electric assisted bicycle manufactured on and after January 1, 2020, shall be equipped with a permanently affixed label in a prominent location which identifies such device as a class I, II, or III electric assisted bicycle along with the motor wattage and top assisted speed capability."
Under § 40-1-1(15.3) an electric assisted bicycle is "a device with two or three wheels which has a saddle and fully operative pedals for human propulsion and also has an electric motor having a power output of not more than 750 watts". A bike with a bigger motor is not an e-bike under Georgia law, and none of this map's e-bike rules apply to it.
Who decides on each trail
State law sets the default; the manager writes the exception. The table below sorts every mapped mile by the kind of body that manages it. Read across to see what that body lets you ride.
| Who manages the trail | Trails | Miles | What e-bikes may do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Georgia State Parks: trails that allow bicycles | 108 | 135.6 | Class 1 only, where bicycles may ride |
| WMA trails inside a state park | 15 | 25.7 | Class 1 only: the state parks' rule applies too |
| Wildlife management areas: trails the Division opens to bicycles | 38 | 136.6 | Class 1, 2 and 3 where bicycles may ride |
| Wildlife management areas whose listing keeps e-bikes to roads | 2 | 7.3 | Closed on trails: e-bikes keep to roads open to motor vehicles |
| Wildlife management areas: ways no Division record lists | 44 | 37.8 | Gray: bicycles keep to open roads unless a trail is designated |
| Public land where two records disagree on bicycles | 18 | 9.8 | Gray: one public record lists no bicycles |
| National forests: trails on the Motor Vehicle Use Map | 61 | 102.8 | Class 1, 2 and 3, as motor vehicles |
| National forests: trails a record lists for motor vehicles, not on the map | 11 | 9.3 | Gray: not designated on the Motor Vehicle Use Map |
| National forests: the Appalachian Trail | 3 | 23.5 | Closed: no bicycles or e-bikes |
| National forests: every other trail | 230 | 498.1 | Closed: e-bikes count as motor vehicles |

| Other national park trails | 17 | 8.8 | Closed: not designated for e-bikes |
| McQueen's Island Trail (two records) | 1 | 5.8 | Gray: two records, both printed |
| National park land, unit not identified | 3 | 0.5 | Gray: the unit could not be identified |
| Army Corps of Engineers lakes | 25 | 23.5 | Gray: no District Commander's e-bike designation read |
| National wildlife refuges | 3 | 6.1 | Gray: no refuge manager's determination read |
| Military installations | 8 | 21.3 | Gray: the installation's rules were not read |
| Cities and counties: a rule of their own that reaches e-bikes | 62 | 94.6 | Each government's own rule: see each below |
| Cities and counties: a rule that leaves e-bikes unsettled | 121 | 176.1 | Unsettled: see each below |
| Cities and counties whose rule could not be read | 1,477 | 943.7 | Gray: state law's default, which the local rule may change |
| Jekyll Island Authority | 12 | 16.0 | Class 1 and 2; Class 3 beside a road: the state's rules, which the Authority's code adopts |
| Stone Mountain Park | 1 | 0.1 | Closed: bikes keep to paved roads |
| Other state land | 21 | 23.9 | Gray: the agency's rule was not read |
| Private, nonprofit and institutional land | 172 | 100.2 | The owner decides |
| All Georgia | 2,438 | 2,423.2 | Map above; every trail by region below |
Each row's miles add up its trails' stretches, rounded so that the rows make the state's 2,423.2 mapped miles. A trail whose stretches fall under two rules sits in each row with the miles that lie there, so a trail found twice is one trail with two rules.
Takeaway
Cities and counties manage 50% of the mapped miles, 1,220 in all. Of the 174 cities, towns and counties that manage a mapped trail, 14 have an e-bike rule or posted trail rules that were read for this map, covering 30% of their miles.
Georgia State Parks trails
In a state park you may ride a Class 1 on the trails and roads that allow bicycles, and any other class stays off them. Georgia DNR's state parks biking page says "Class 1 e-bikes are allowed on roadways and trails that also allow bicycles", and the parks' answers to visitors' questions repeat the sentence word for word.
The parks' rule decides which trails those are. Ga. Comp. R. & Regs. r. 391-5-1-.05(c)1 says "Bicycles shall be ridden on designated bicycle trails or roads only" and "Bicycles shall be neither ridden or pushed along designated nature trails or footpaths."
The parks hold 136 mapped miles of trail that their records or the trail's own tags open to bicycles, on 21 parks: Cloudland Canyon's, Fort Mountain's, Hard Labor Creek's and Fort Yargo's mountain bike trails among them. On every one of those miles you may ride a Class 1 alone.
On 9.8 more miles of public land, most of them in Cloudland Canyon and Standing Boy Creek state parks, one record shows bicycles and another shows none, so those trails read gray. A "hiking only" sign at the trailhead settles one of them; if you find none, ask the park office before you ride.
Wildlife management areas
On a wildlife management area, your e-bike rides where a bicycle may, and a bicycle may ride only open roads, designated trails or areas and, for hunter access, closed roads.
Under Ga. Comp. R. & Regs. r. 391-4-2-.62(1)(c), the word bicycle "includes electric assisted bicycles", and paragraph (2) says "Horses, bicycles and all motor vehicles, including off-road vehicles, are restricted to open roads. Provided, however, that horses and bicycles may use designated trails or designated areas; bicycles may be used on closed roads for hunter access".
The Wildlife Resources Division's 2026-2027 regulations guide puts the classes plainly: "Electric bicycles (750 watts or less) may be used the same as pedal powered bicycles." On the 117 mapped miles of trail its records open to bicycles, you may ride any class; Crockford-Pigeon Mountain, Dawson Forest, the Upatoi Natural Area, Silver Lake and Paulding Forest hold most of them.
Where a WMA shares ground with a state park, at Standing Boy Creek, Tallulah Gorge and Panola Mountain, the parks' rule applies too, so on those 25.7 mapped miles you may ride a Class 1 alone.
The guide's own listing for an area can take that back. For 11 WMAs it prints the note "Electric bicycles restricted to roads open for motor vehicles." Most of those WMAs lie on national forest land, where the forest's rule already governs; on Chattahoochee WMA the note closes 7.3 mapped miles of trail the Division manages.
Two more rules ride along. Paragraph (7) says "Trails and areas open to horses and bicycles may be closed during certain hunting seasons or certain times of day to avoid user conflicts," so check the area's dates before you ride in deer season. And where a trail appears in none of the Division's records, 38 mapped miles, it reads gray until the area's office tells you it is designated.
The Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests
On the national forest, an e-bike is a motor vehicle, and you may ride it only where the Motor Vehicle Use Map opens a trail or road. The Forest Service defines a motor vehicle as "Any vehicle which is self-propelled" (36 CFR 212.1), and 36 CFR 261.13 makes it "prohibited to possess or operate a motor vehicle on National Forest System lands in that administrative unit or Ranger District other than in accordance with those designations".
The agency's statement on e-bikes says "Class 1, 2, and 3 e-bikes are allowed on motorized trails and roads on national forests and grasslands," and adds that "Local Forest Service officials may consider new opportunities for e-bike use on non-motorized trails and in non-motorized areas by utilizing a designation process in accordance with the Travel Management Rule (36 CFR Part 212, Subpart B)."
No Chattahoochee-Oconee trail record lists e-bike use on a trail closed to motor vehicles, so the forest's 634 mapped miles follow the motor vehicle map: open on the routes it opens to motor vehicles, closed on every other trail, and gray on the few miles where a trail record and the map disagree.
Motorized trails
The 103 mapped miles of trail on the forest's Motor Vehicle Use Map, 61 trails in all, take your e-bike as a motor vehicle, whatever its class. They include the Town Creek loops in the Oconee and the off-highway vehicle trails at Tatum Lead, Oakey Mountain, Davenport Mountain and Moates Knob.
The forest's off-highway vehicle page tells you "Road, trail, and area users must comply with the Motor Vehicle Use Map," and the map's dates bind: a route can open for part of the year only.
Two texts disagree here, and both are printed. The Wildlife Resources Division's guide says "ON NATIONAL FOREST LANDS, horses and bicycles may be used on lands not otherwise closed. Electric bicycles are restricted to roads open for motor vehicles." The Forest Service's own statement adds motorized trails.
On the forest the Forest Service's designations govern, and r. 391-4-2-.60(6) says "U.S. Forest Service regulations shall apply on all WMAs located on National Forest lands"; if you want no doubt, keep to the roads.
On 9.3 mapped miles a trail record lists motorized use while the map's trail layer draws no route; those read gray until the ranger district confirms the designation.
The Appalachian Trail
No e-bike rides the Appalachian Trail. The Division's guide says "Horses, bicycles, and electric bicycles are prohibited on the Appalachian Trail," and the trail is no motorized route on the forest's map, so its 23.5 mapped miles in Georgia read closed. The forest's trail records list bicycles among the trail's allowed uses; under the guide and 36 CFR 261.13 your e-bike stays off either way.
Every other forest trail
The rest, 498 mapped miles, are closed to every class. They include the Pinhoti and Benton MacKaye trails, the Chattooga River Trail, and the forest's mountain bike trails at Bear Creek, Stonewall Falls and Bull Mountain. A pedal bicycle may ride many of them; your e-bike may not, until the forest designates them through the process its own statement describes.
National park units
In a national park unit you may ride an e-bike only where the superintendent designates it. 36 CFR 4.30(i) says "The use of an electric bicycle is prohibited in locations not designated by the Superintendent," and off roads open to public motor vehicles "using the electric motor exclusively to move an electric bicycle for an extended period of time without pedaling is prohibited" (4.30(i)(3)).
| Park unit | What your e-bike may ride | Mapped miles |
|---|---|---|
| Chattahoochee River NRA | The signed routes at Cochran Shoals and Sope Creek, any class while you pedal | 9.7 |
| Chattahoochee River NRA, its other trails | Read two ways, so gray | 3.4 |
| Chickamauga Battlefield | The Green Trail, any class while you pedal | 0.5 |
| Chickamauga Battlefield, its other trails | Closed: not designated | 6.1 |
| Ocmulgee Mounds | The Heritage Trail and the River Trail, Class 1 and 2 | 2.4 |
| Kennesaw Mountain | Closed on trails; park roads and parking areas only | 2.2 |
| Cumberland Island | Closed on designated trails | 0.4 |
| McQueen's Island Trail | Two land records, both printed, so gray | 5.8 |
Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. The 2025 compendium says "E-bikes are allowed in the park where traditional bicycles are allowed." It opens Cochran Shoals' signed routes and "the following surfaced multi-use trails: Riverside trail located adjacent to Ivy Mill, West Palisades along the Bob Callan Trail adjacent to Rottenwood Creek, Cochran Shoals along the fitness loop and the designated bike trails in the Sope Creek area." You may ride those routes, 9.7 mapped miles, on any class while you pedal.
36 CFR 7.90(a) says "The Superintendent may designate all or a portion of the following trails as open to bicycle use" and lists ten, from Abbotts Bridge to the Roswell Riverwalk in Vickery Creek; the compendium names fewer. On the 3.4 mapped miles off its list, both readings are printed and the trails are gray.
Inside the recreation area's boundary, much of the riverside ground is not the Park Service's at all. Azalea, Garrard Landing, Cauley Creek, Rogers Bridge, Settles Bridge and Chattahoochee Pointe are city or county parks, and most of their trails take their own manager's rule, shown with Roswell, Johns Creek, Duluth, Gwinnett and Forsyth below; a few stretches at Garrard Landing and Rogers Bridge carry no city or county record and read as the recreation area's.
Takeaway
Along the Chattahoochee, ride the signed routes at Cochran Shoals and Sope Creek on any class while you pedal. On the recreation area's other trails, and in the city and county parks inside its boundary, read the manager's rule first: the NRA's own list and its compendium disagree, and a park's own manager may decide.
Chickamauga Battlefield. The compendium says "Trails - The following trails have been authorized for bicycle and e-bike use: Chickamauga Battlefield: Green Trail located between lower parking lot at Visitor Center to Glenn-Kelly Road", 0.5 mapped miles you may ride; the battlefield's other 6.1 mapped miles are not designated and read closed.
Ocmulgee Mounds. The compendium admits "Class 1 and Class 2 electric bicycles" on the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail and the River Trail, 2.4 mapped miles, "where traditional bicycles are also allowed".
Kennesaw Mountain and Cumberland Island. Kennesaw Mountain's compendium says "Bicycles are prohibited on all unpaved surfaces in the park, including trails," and admits Class 1 and Class 2 on "Open Park roads and parking areas" alone. Cumberland Island's compendium says "Bicycles and E-Bikes are not allowed on designated trails." Keep your e-bike off both parks' trails.
Fort Pulaski and McQueen's Island. Fort Pulaski's compendium says "E-bikes are allowed in Fort Pulaski National Monument where traditional bicycles are allowed" and closes the moat wall, the demilune and the fort itself to bicycles. It also sets the hours of the McQueen's Island Trail: "McQueen's trail is open during daylight hours."
The federal land records give that trail's ground to Chatham County, whose rule could not be read, so its 5.8 mapped miles carry both records and read gray. Ride it in daylight, pedaling, and ask the county about a Class 3.
Corps lakes, refuges and military land
On an Army Corps of Engineers lake, a bicycle counts as a vehicle, and a vehicle keeps to authorized roads unless the District Commander designates otherwise. 36 CFR 327.2(a) lists "bicycles, or any other such equipment" among vehicles, and (c) says "The operation and/or parking of a vehicle off authorized roadways is prohibited except at locations and times designated by the District Commander."
No District Commander's e-bike designation was read, so the 24 mapped miles on Corps land, at West Point Lake, Carters Lake, Lake Allatoona, J. Strom Thurmond Lake and Lake Hartwell among them, read gray; ask the lake's project office before you ride.
On a national wildlife refuge, the refuge manager decides. 50 CFR 27.31(m) treats an e-bike as a bicycle "If the refuge manager determines that electric bicycle (also known as e-bike) use is a compatible use on roads or trails". No determination for Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge was read, so its 6.1 mapped miles read gray; ask the refuge before you ride.
On a military installation, the installation's rules decide, and they were not read. Of the 21.3 mapped miles on military land, gray on this map, Fort Moore's mountain bike trails and its stretch of the Columbus riverwalk carry most; Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay and Fort Stewart hold the rest.
Jekyll Island and Stone Mountain
Two state authorities run their own grounds. Stone Mountain Park's rules say "Bikes must be kept on paved roads", so you may not ride its trails on a bicycle or an e-bike.
The Jekyll Island Authority's own code decides the island's paths. Section 24-1(a) of its Code of Ordinances says "The Uniform Rules of the Road contained in O.C.G.A. tit. 40, Ch. 6 and the definitions contained in O.C.G.A. § 40-1-1 are hereby adopted as the traffic regulations of the authority".
Section 24-2 keeps motor vehicles, defined by § 40-1-1(33), which leaves an e-bike out, off "the bicycle paths". So the state's default governs: on the 8.4 mapped miles of paths away from a road a Class 1 or 2 rides, and on the 7.5 beside a road a Class 3 rides too.
What the Authority bars is the e-bike business. Section 24-32 says "No license shall be issued for the renting of e-bikes on the island or for delivery to the island" and "E-bike tours and rentals are prohibited." Bring your own e-bike to Jekyll.
City and county rules
Under Georgia law, a city or county decides whether your e-bike rides its paths. § 40-6-303(a)(1) lets a local authority "prohibit the operation of a class I electric assisted bicycle or class II electric assisted bicycle on any bicycle path or shared use path within its jurisdiction", and (a)(2) lets it permit a Class 3 away from a highway.
174 cities, towns and counties manage 1,220 mapped miles, half of this map. Where no record names a trail's manager, the map gives it to the city or town it lies in, or outside every city to its county; 738 of the local miles are placed that way, and the register flags each one.

Rules that name e-bikes
Forsyth County. The county's Big Creek Greenway rules say "The speed limit is 15 mph. Class I and II electric bicycles are permitted. Golf carts, ATVs, motorized scooters, motorized skateboards, class 3 electric bicycles, hover boards, and similar devices are prohibited." On the county's 16.9 mapped miles of the greenway you may ride a Class 1 or 2.
Forsyth's own trail inventory answers for its park trails one by one in a field it labels "eBikes": 6.6 mapped miles carry "Yes" and 19.3 carry "No", and the map follows each answer. A "Yes" names no class, so a Class 3 reads unsettled there.
Glynn County. The county's release of September 5, 2025, reports that its board amended "Section 2-13-55 and Section 2-13-56, which regulates the use of bicycles, electric bicycles (E-bikes), electric play vehicles, and other wheeled conveyances on county-maintained paths and sidewalks", with "A speed limit of 15 mph for bicycles and E-bikes" on paths in unincorporated Glynn County.
The release names no class, so on St. Simons Island's trail system and the county's other paths you may ride a Class 1 or 2, and a Class 3 only where the path runs beside a road: 23.6 of the county's mapped miles. The ordinance's own text sits on a host this map could not read.
Woodstock. The city's Ordinance No. 2026-022, which its council adopted on July 13, 2026, rewrote the park code's motor vehicle rule. Section 32-4(b) now says "Persons age 18 and over shall be permitted to ride Class I electric assisted bicycles, otherwise known as a Class I e-bikes," on "paved trails, paved bicycle paths and Taylor Randahl Memorial Mountain Bike Trails at Old Rope Mill Park", at no more than "20 miles per hour".
So on Woodstock's 11.7 mapped miles of paved trail and Old Rope Mill singletrack, a rider 18 or over may ride a Class 1, and nobody may ride a Class 2 or 3. The city's other natural-surface trails keep e-bikes off, and where a stretch's record gives no surface, 2.5 mapped miles, the trail reads unsettled.
Four more cities post their own e-bike words, and you can read each rule where it is quoted:
| City | What its own page says | Your e-bike there |
|---|---|---|
| Brookhaven | Its police department's bicycle and e-bike page: "Class 1 e-bikes are permitted on roads, bike lanes, and multiuse trails", and Class 2 bikes "are permitted in the same locations" | A Class 1 or 2 on 1.8 mapped miles away from a road; a Class 3 too on the 1.8 beside one |
| Sandy Springs | Its e-bike page: Class 1 and Class 2 "are permitted on bike paths", and a Class 3 only "when the path is adjacent to or within a highway" | A Class 1 or 2 on 1.8 mapped miles away from a road; a Class 3 too on the 2.1 beside one |
| LaGrange | Its park rules, "As enumerated in City Code Chapter 15-15": "The use of motorcycles, dirt bikes, E-bikes, ATV's or motorized vehicles of any kind or similar vehicles designed for off-road use are prohibited within public parks." | Closed on the 0.8 mapped miles inside a city park; the rest of The Thread reads gray |
| Peachtree Corners | Its Town Green notice: "E-bikes and e-scooters are always prohibited on Town Green property"; its e-bike page lists multi-use paths "where permitted by state and local regulations" and names none | Closed on the Town Green's 0.2 mapped miles; unsettled on the other 1.1 |
Rules against "motorized" vehicles
Georgia's code says a motor vehicle is "every vehicle which is self-propelled other than a personal delivery device, an electric assisted bicycle, or an electric personal assistive mobility device (EPAMD)" (§ 40-1-1(33)). A posted rule that bars "motorized vehicles" without that definition can be read two ways for your e-bike, so these trails read gray and both readings are printed:
- Gwinnett County's park trails. The county's trail rules list "No motorized vehicles" beside "Motorized personal mobility devices permitted", 88 mapped miles.
- The Atlanta BeltLine. Its rules page says "No motorized vehicles allowed on trail (Ord. Sec. 110-86, 110-87)" and asks riders to "Park scooters and other e-devices off trail", 23.0 mapped miles.
- The Columbus RiverWalk. Its rules of conduct open with "No motorized vehicles", 12.2 mapped miles.
- Athens-Clarke's Firefly Trail and Oconee River Greenway. The Firefly Trail page says the trail "is available for use by pedestrians, bicyclists, and any other non-motorized modes of transportation", 11.2 mapped miles.
- The Carrollton GreenBelt. Its trail rules say "The trail is open to all non-motorized users" and list golf carts, scooters, mopeds, motorcycles, hoverboards and power wheels as motorized, with no e-bike in the list, 16.9 mapped miles.
- The Georgia International Horse Park. Conyers' trails page says "No Motorcycles or all-terrain vehicles on trails. Motorized wheelchairs are allowed." and never names e-bikes, 11.6 mapped miles.
- Braselton's Mulberry River Walk. The town's code bars "any motorized or electric vehicle in a recreation facility except upon roadways designated and maintained for vehicular traffic" (§ 23-209), while its golf cart ordinance defines an electric bicycle apart and admits it on paved recreation paths; the River Walk is natural-surface, so ask the town before you ride its 2.2 mapped miles.
Athens-Clarke's trails page also says "Bicycle use is prohibited on all natural surface trails except the mountain bike trails at Walker Park and the small hillside natural surface trail at Dudley Park connecting the lower parking lot with the Firefly Trail." On the Walker Park trails a bicycle rides; the unified government's e-bike rule there was not read.
Rules that could not be read
Peachtree City, the largest local manager on this map, could not be read. Its paths page describes "100+ mile network of shared-use paths for pedestrians, cyclists, and Motorized carts" and sends you to "Peachtree City Ordinance 1253, Chapters 70 and 78" for the rules of path use. Those chapters sit on a host this map could not read, so the city's 102 mapped miles read gray; read the posted rules at the path, or ask City Hall at 770-487-7657.
In all, 160 governments' rules could not be read. The websites of 130 of them answered on October 31, 2026, 115 with park or trail pages, and no page read states an e-bike rule for the trails on this map; 78 of those sites link a code on Municode, which refused our requests, and the rest link none from the pages read. The other 30 sites could not be read, 29 of them behind a bot check.
Dawson County's Styles Park page does say "No motorized vehicles of any kind (e-bikes are permitted)" for that park's dirt trails, which no source layer maps yet, so you will not find them on this map.
On their 853.0 mapped miles, state law's default would let you ride a Class 1 or 2 on a paved path open to bicycles, but the local rule may change that, so those trails read gray. On a natural-surface trail designated for nonmotorized vehicles the statute sets no default at all: § 40-6-303(a)(3) leaves it to the manager.
PATH Foundation, the nonprofit that built many of metro Atlanta's trails, the Silver Comet and the Stone Mountain Trail among them, answers in its FAQ that e-bikes may ride "As long as they do not exceed 20 mph! That would be Class 1 for e-bikes." The same FAQ suggests that "the Department of Parks and Recreation in the respective city or county is contacted to ensure that any of their requirements are met."
Named trails riders ask about
The trails people search for by name, each with every rule that governs its mapped miles. A row adds up all of a trail's mapped stretches; where a trail crosses several managers, each manager's rule is listed with its miles, rounded so a row's parts add to its total.

The Silver Comet shows why the manager matters more than the name. On 10.7 mapped miles across Paulding Forest WMA, the Division's trail layer opens it to bicycles and you may ride any class; 9.2 more miles inside the WMA appear in no Division record and read gray; and through Polk and Cobb counties and the cities along it, Mableton, Powder Springs, Smyrna, Cedartown and Rockmart among them, its managers' rules could not be read.
PATH's FAQ answers for e-bikes up to 20 mph, and a Woodstock staff report of June 2026 says "Cobb County only allows Class I e-bikes on the Silver Comet trail"; Cobb's own text could not be found, so ride a Class 1 there.
Takeaway
If you ride a Class 1, start with the state parks' bicycle trails, the WMA trails, Forsyth County's Big Creek Greenway and the Chattahoochee River NRA's routes at Cochran Shoals and Sope Creek. If you ride a Class 2 or 3, the forest's motorized trails, the WMA trails and Glynn County's roadside paths take every class.
Georgia bike trails, region by region
The twelve regions below are Georgia's twelve regional commissions, drawn on the map above, with each trail stretch placed in the commission that holds its midpoint; the names are ours, after the two largest places in each.
Open your region for its map, its longest named trails and their rules, and a collapsed list of every mapped trail by rule. A trail that crosses a commission's line appears in each region with the miles that lie there.
Rome and Dalton

Northwest Georgia holds the most closed miles on the map, nearly all of them national forest singletrack. Its 594 mapped miles lie in Bartow, Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, Fannin, Floyd, Gilmer, Gordon, Haralson, Murray, Paulding, Pickens, Polk, Walker and Whitfield counties; 166 are open, 268 are closed and 160 read gray.
Crockford-Pigeon Mountain's WMA trails, the forest's motorized trails, Cloudland Canyon's and Fort Mountain's mountain bike trails and the stretch of the Silver Comet the Division lists through Paulding Forest WMA carry most of the open miles. The Pinhoti and Benton MacKaye trails and the forest's other singletrack make most of the closed ones, with Chickamauga Battlefield's trails off the Green Trail.
The gray miles lie mostly on Polk County's stretch of the Silver Comet, on the Georgia-Alabama Land Trust's and Lula Lake Land Trust's grounds, where the owner decides, on Rome's and Chattooga County's trails, whose rules could not be read, and on Paulding Forest WMA's ways no Division record lists.

In the mountains, the forest map decides most rides. The region's 339 mapped miles lie in Banks, Dawson, Franklin, Habersham, Hall, Hart, Lumpkin, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union and White counties; 78 are open, 202 are closed and 59 read gray.
The forest's motorized trails, Oakey Mountain's, Davenport Mountain's and Moates Knob's among them, Dawson Forest WMA's trails, Tallulah Gorge WMA's and Unicoi State Park's mountain bike trail carry most of the open miles. The Appalachian Trail, the Willis Knob horse trail, Stonewall Falls and the Chattooga River Trail lead the closed ones, with Chattahoochee WMA's trails under its listing's e-bike note.
Most of the gray miles are Gainesville's and Hall County's natural-surface trails, whose rules could not be read, Dawson Forest WMA's ways no Division record lists, and Georgia DNR land outside a park or WMA.

Atlanta and South Fulton

Metro Atlanta holds a third of the map's miles, and most of them read gray. The Atlanta Regional Commission's 800 mapped miles lie in Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Henry, Rockdale and Gwinnett counties; 59 are open, 22 are closed and 719 read gray.
Forsyth County's Big Creek Greenway and the county's trails its inventory opens to e-bikes, Woodstock's paved trails and Old Rope Mill's bike trails, Brookhaven's and Sandy Springs' paths, the Chattahoochee River NRA's routes at Cochran Shoals and Sope Creek, and Panola Mountain State Park's PATH trails carry the open miles.
The closed ones are Forsyth's park trails its inventory closes, Kennesaw Mountain's trails, Stone Mountain Park's, Woodstock's natural-surface trails, Peachtree Corners' Town Green and the grounds of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park.
Most of the gray miles are Peachtree City's paths, Gwinnett County's park trails under their posted rules, the BeltLine, and the trails of Atlanta, Cobb, DeKalb, Alpharetta and the region's other cities and counties, whose rules could not be read.

Athens and Winder

Northeast Georgia's miles come closer to an even three-way split than any other region's. The region's 207 mapped miles lie in Barrow, Clarke, Elbert, Greene, Jackson, Jasper, Madison, Morgan, Newton, Oconee, Oglethorpe and Walton counties; 64 are open, 57 are closed and 86 read gray.
Hard Labor Creek's, Fort Yargo's and Watson Mill Bridge's state park bicycle trails, the Oconee National Forest's motorized Town Creek loops and Clybel WMA's multiuse trail carry the open miles. The Oconee's other trails, its Ocmulgee River Upper Loop among them, are the closed ones.
Most of the gray miles lie on Athens-Clarke's Firefly Trail and greenway under the "non-motorized" wording, and on the trails of Greene, Newton and Oconee counties and Covington, whose rules could not be read.

Newnan and LaGrange

West Georgia's open miles are its state parks'. The region's 98 mapped miles lie in Butts, Carroll, Heard, Lamar, Meriwether, Pike, Spalding, Troup, Upson and Coweta counties; 7 are open, 1 are closed and 90 read gray.
Chattahoochee Bend's and Indian Springs' bicycle trails carry the open miles, Class 1 alone. Dauset Trails Nature Center's grounds in Butts County, where the owner decides, the Carrollton GreenBelt under its posted rules, LaGrange's Thread outside the city's parks and Newnan's LINC, whose rules could not be read, and West Point Lake's Corps trails make most of the gray.
Nearly all the closed miles are the trail inside LaGrange's parks, which its park rules close.

Around Augusta, only the state parks' trails are settled. The region's 55 mapped miles lie in Burke, Columbia, Glascock, Jefferson, Jenkins, Lincoln, McDuffie, Richmond, Taliaferro, Warren, Washington, Wilkes and Hancock counties; 11 are open, 0 are closed and 44 read gray.
Mistletoe, Hamburg, Magnolia Springs and A. H. Stephens state parks carry the open miles, Class 1 alone. Augusta's trails, its River Levee Trail and canal paths among them, and Columbia County's Euchee Creek Greenway read gray, their rules unread.

Where riders get caught out
Seven situations catch riders on Georgia trails, each one a detail the color alone does not show.
- A Class 3 on a path away from the highway. § 40-6-303(a)(2) keeps it off unless the path runs within or beside a highway or its manager permits it. Away from a road on this map, a Class 3 rides only where a manager's own rule admits it: a WMA's designated trails and hunter-access roads, the national forest's motor vehicle routes, and the Park Service's designated routes along the Chattahoochee and at Chickamauga, where you pedal.
- A Class 2 in a state park. The parks admit "Class 1 e-bikes" to their bicycle trails and roads, so if you ride a throttle bike, it stays in the parking lot at Cloudland Canyon, Fort Yargo or Hard Labor Creek.
- A national forest trail off the map. On the national forest, the Pinhoti and Benton MacKaye trails, its mountain bike trails and the Appalachian Trail close to every class; only the Motor Vehicle Use Map's routes are open.
- A WMA in hunting season. Trails "may be closed during certain hunting seasons or certain times of day", and on 11 WMAs the guide keeps your e-bike to roads open for motor vehicles.
- A rule against motorized vehicles. The posted rules of Gwinnett's park trails, the BeltLine, the Columbus RiverWalk, the Carrollton GreenBelt and Athens' Firefly Trail keep them to non-motorized use without saying whether your e-bike counts as "motorized"; ask before you ride.
- A rider's age. No one under 15 may operate a Class 3 (§ 40-6-303(b)), and "No person shall operate or be a passenger on a class III electric assisted bicycle without wearing a bicycle helmet" ((c)(1)). On Woodstock's trails, no rider under 18 may ride an e-bike at all.
- A motor over 750 watts. It falls outside § 40-1-1(15.3), so if your bike's motor is bigger, none of the e-bike rules on this map apply to it.
What a wrong turn can cost you
On the national forest, riding your e-bike off the designated routes is a federal offense. 36 CFR 261.1b says "the punishment for violation of any prohibition in or order issued under this part shall be imprisonment of not more than six months or a fine in accordance with the applicable provisions of 18 U.S.C. 3571 or both."
On a Corps lake, a violation "may be punished by a fine of not more than $5,000 or imprisonment for not more than six months or both" (36 CFR 327.25). On a county path, Glynn County's release puts its own path rules' fines at up to $1,000.
Your Georgia trail checklist, in five steps
- Find the trail and its manager. Look it up on its region's map or in the downloadable register.
- Read your label. A Class 3 loses every path away from a highway whose manager has not permitted it; a Class 2 loses the state parks' trails.
- Check the land. On the national forest ride only the Motor Vehicle Use Map's routes; on a WMA keep to open roads and the Division's designated trails, and check the area's season dates.
- Check the rider. No one under 15 operates a Class 3, and every Class 3 rider and passenger wears a helmet.
- Read the trailhead sign. A posted closure, season or speed limit governs the trail you are on.
Roads, labels and riders
On the road, you have a bicycle rider's rights and duties. § 40-6-301 says "Every person operating an electric assisted bicycle shall be granted all the rights and shall be subject to all the duties applicable to the operator of a bicycle under this title except as otherwise provided in this part."
Georgia's code does not count your e-bike as a motor vehicle. § 40-1-1(33), as the General Assembly last wrote it in HB 1009 of 2022, excludes "an electric assisted bicycle" from the definition.
The under-15 rule reaches Class 3 alone. HB 454 struck e-bikes from the moped age rule in § 40-6-351, which now says "No person under 15 years of age shall operate a moped upon the highways in this state", and put the age bar in § 40-6-303(b), for a Class 3 only. Georgia DNR's state parks page adds that "State law requires that riders 15 and younger must wear a helmet."
The e-bike part of the code, §§ 40-6-300 to 40-6-303, says nothing about sidewalks. Before you ride one, and for the lighting and passenger rules, read Georgia e-bike laws.
What changed, and what could change next
Georgia's e-bike trail rules have moved in steps since 2019. Check them before you plan a season of riding.

What could change next:
- The Park Service. Its proposed rule on bicycle use in park areas (91 FR 56095) takes comments until November 2, 2026; its final rule on powered micromobility devices (91 FR 52024) took effect on September 11, 2026.
- The Forest Service. It has begun an environmental impact statement on travel management (91 FR 54686), and the forest reissues its Motor Vehicle Use Map.
- The General Assembly. No session since 2019 has changed the path rules in § 40-6-303(a).
Choosing an e-bike for Georgia trails
The class on your label decides how much of this map you may ride: 503 mapped miles on a Class 1, 330 on a Class 2 and 285 on a Class 3. Check a bike's class before you buy it.
| Your bike's class | Mapped miles it may ride | Against a Class 1 |
|---|---|---|
| Class 1: assist while you pedal, to 20 mph | 503 | The most of any class |
| Class 2: throttle, to 20 mph | 330 | 173 fewer: mostly the state parks' bicycle trails |
| Class 3: assist while you pedal, to 28 mph | 285 | 218 fewer: most paths away from a highway |
A Class 1 rides every open mile on this map. If you plan Cloudland Canyon, Fort Yargo, the Big Creek Greenway or Cochran Shoals, buy a bike whose label says Class 1. If you commute on Georgia's roads and the paths beside them, a Class 3 suits you, and it may ride the forest's motorized trails and the WMA trails too.
Where the records give a surface, Georgia's trails run mostly dirt. 971 of this map's miles are natural surface, 621 are paved and 99 are crushed stone or gravel, while the records of 732 give no surface. For north Georgia's WMA and state park singletrack a Class 1 e-mountain bike suits you; for the greenways and the coast's paths, a commuter or hybrid does.

The bottom line
Ride a Class 1 e-bike and every open mile of this map is yours: the state parks' bicycle trails, the WMA trails, Forsyth County's Big Creek Greenway, the Chattahoochee River NRA's routes at Cochran Shoals and Sope Creek, Ocmulgee Mounds' Heritage Trail and the forest's motorized trails among them.
Under a "motorized vehicle" rule, Gwinnett's, the BeltLine's and the RiverWalk's among them, ask the manager before you ride; on the national forest keep to the Motor Vehicle Use Map's routes; on Peachtree City's paths, read the posted rules at the path; and on Jekyll Island, bring your own e-bike, since the island bars rentals.
Shopping for one? Choose the class first: a Class 2 gives up 173 mapped miles here and a Class 3 gives up 218. Then compare e-mountain bikes for north Georgia's singletrack or commuter e-bikes for the greenways, or read the best e-bikes for Atlanta if you ride the metro; the whole range ships free to Georgia.
Before each new trail, find its color here and read the sign at the trailhead. If you find a trail missing or a rule that has changed, email the trail's name and a link to the new rule to support@redtailebikes.com, and we will read its register row again.
Frequently asked questions
Are e-bikes allowed on bike trails in Georgia?
Yes, on most paths open to bicycles. Under § 40-6-303(a) you may ride a Class 1 or 2 on any bicycle or shared use path where bicycles may ride unless its manager prohibits it, and a Class 3 only within or beside a highway or where the manager permits it. Of 2,423 mapped miles, 503 are open to at least one class.
Are e-bikes legal in Georgia?
Yes. § 40-1-1(15.3) defines an electric assisted bicycle as one with "fully operative pedals" and a motor "having a power output of not more than 750 watts", and § 40-6-301 gives its rider a bicycle rider's rights and duties. If your bike's motor is bigger, it is not an e-bike under that definition.
Are e-bikes allowed in Georgia state parks?
A Class 1 is. Georgia DNR's state parks biking page says "Class 1 e-bikes are allowed on roadways and trails that also allow bicycles", and bicycles ride only designated bicycle trails and roads. The parks hold 136 mapped miles of bicycle trail on 21 parks.
Are e-bikes allowed on the Silver Comet Trail?
On part of it: on the 10.7 mapped miles where it crosses Paulding Forest WMA, the Division's records open it to bicycles and every class rides, and 9.2 more miles there appear in no Division record. Elsewhere its counties' and cities' rules could not be read; PATH Foundation's FAQ answers "As long as they do not exceed 20 mph! That would be Class 1 for e-bikes." This map holds 66.5 mapped miles of it.
Are e-bikes allowed on the Atlanta BeltLine?
The BeltLine's rules page says "No motorized vehicles allowed on trail (Ord. Sec. 110-86, 110-87)", and Georgia's code says an e-bike is not a motor vehicle, so the trail reads two ways and gray on this map. Ask the city before you ride a Class 3.
How many miles is the Atlanta BeltLine?
This map holds 23.0 mapped miles of BeltLine trail, from Atlanta BeltLine, Inc.'s trail layer and OpenStreetMap's ways named for the BeltLine, as of October 29 to 31, 2026.
Are electric bikes allowed on Georgia WMAs?
Yes, where a bicycle may ride. Under r. 391-4-2-.62(1)(c), the word bicycle "includes electric assisted bicycles", and the 2026-2027 guide says e-bikes of 750 watts or less "may be used the same as pedal powered bicycles". On 11 WMAs the guide restricts e-bikes to roads open for motor vehicles.
Can you ride an e-bike in a national forest?
Only where the Motor Vehicle Use Map opens a trail or road. The Forest Service says "Class 1, 2, and 3 e-bikes are allowed on motorized trails and roads on national forests and grasslands." In the Chattahoochee-Oconee that means 103 mapped miles of trail; 498 more, and the Appalachian Trail, are closed, and a few miles read gray where a trail record and the map disagree.
Are e-bikes allowed on the Appalachian Trail?
No. The Wildlife Resources Division's guide says "Horses, bicycles, and electric bicycles are prohibited on the Appalachian Trail," and on the national forest an e-bike rides only designated motor vehicle routes.
Are e-bikes allowed on Jekyll Island?
Yes, on its paths, on an e-bike you bring. The Jekyll Island Authority's code adopts the state's rules of the road, so a Class 1 or 2 rides the island's 8.4 mapped miles of paths away from a road, and a Class 3 rides only the 7.5 beside one. Its section 24-32 says "E-bike tours and rentals are prohibited."
Are e-bikes allowed on Cumberland Island?
Not on its trails. The seashore's compendium says "Bicycles and E-Bikes are not allowed on designated trails". It allows e-bikes where traditional bicycles are allowed, the beach between the Dungeness and Sea Camp crossings among those places, and bars them, like bicycles, from the designated wilderness.
Are e-bikes allowed on mountain bike trails?
It depends on the manager. You may ride a Class 1 on the state parks' mountain bike trails and any class on the WMA trails; the national forest's mountain bike trails close to every class; and on a city or county natural-surface trail designated for nonmotorized vehicles, § 40-6-303(a)(3) leaves the choice to the manager.
Do you need a license or registration to ride an e-bike in Georgia?
Georgia's code does not count an e-bike as a motor vehicle (§ 40-1-1(33)), and HB 454 took e-bikes out of § 40-6-351, the moped rule that requires a driver's license on the highways. For the rest of the road rules, read Georgia e-bike laws.
Are there age restrictions for riding an electric bike in Georgia?
For a Class 3, yes: no one under 15 may operate one (§ 40-6-303(b)), though a younger rider may ride as a passenger on one built for passengers. HB 454 removed e-bikes from § 40-6-351's under-15 rule for mopeds.
Do you have to wear a helmet on an e-bike in Georgia?
On a Class 3, every rider and passenger does: "No person shall operate or be a passenger on a class III electric assisted bicycle without wearing a bicycle helmet" (§ 40-6-303(c)(1)). Georgia DNR's parks page adds that "State law requires that riders 15 and younger must wear a helmet."
Where can you ride an e-bike near Atlanta?
On a Class 1 or 2, Forsyth County's Big Creek Greenway is open, and the Chattahoochee River NRA's routes at Cochran Shoals and Sope Creek take any class while you pedal. On a Class 1, so do Panola Mountain State Park's PATH trails and, at 18 or over, Woodstock's paved trails and Old Rope Mill's bike trails. Most of metro Atlanta's other miles read gray: their cities' and counties' rules could not be read.
How we verified this map
- Trails. 2,438 trails over 2,423 miles from Georgia DNR's Wildlife Resources Division WMA trail layer and state park trail records, the Atlanta Regional Commission's bicycle and pedestrian inventory, Atlanta BeltLine, Inc.'s trail layer, Forsyth County's trail inventory, the USDA Forest Service's trail records and Motor Vehicle Use Map trails, the National Park Service's trail layer and OpenStreetMap's trails and bicycle ways in a Geofabrik extract of October 28, 2026; a stretch two sources both map is counted once.
- Managers. Each trail's manager comes from the source layer where it is the manager's own record, then a trail's own operator, the state park and WMA boundaries, federal unit boundaries, the land manager PAD-US or Georgia Conservation Lands names, OpenStreetMap park operators and the place a trail lies in; the register says which record named it.
- Rules. Every rule the map applies is quoted from its own text, whether the statute, a state rule, the WMA regulations guide, a federal regulation, a park compendium or a city or county page, retrieved October 29 to 31, 2026, and every quote was checked against the copy we saved. 14 of 174 local governments' rules or posted trail rules were read, covering 30% of local trail miles.
- Law changes. Every bill filed in the General Assembly from the 2019-2020 session through the 2026 special session, 8,571 bills in the Assembly's own records, was listed, and the 492 whose summary names Title 40, motor vehicles or a Code revision were read in full: only HB 454, which wrote § 40-6-303, and HB 497 of 2021 changed it.
- The data. Every trail is a row in the register (CSV) with its manager, what its rule says about each class and the rule's source where one was read, and the same rows are published as JSON.
- Demand. The trails and questions on this page were chosen from 7,447 Google and Bing search suggestions, 573 headings from the pages that rank, 31 forum posts read one by one and an 8-prompt AI panel. 715 of those 8,059 map to a section of this page, and the demand ledger lists every row with its source.
By Milad Ghobadibeygvand, BScN (Western University, 2014), Redtail eBikes. Every rule this map quotes was read October 29 to 31, 2026, and every quote checked against the copy we saved. Found a rule that has changed since? Email the trail's name and a link to the new rule to support@redtailebikes.com, and we will read that trail's row in the register again.
Limitations
- Local codes. The rules of 160 cities, towns and counties could not be read, on 853.0 mapped miles, all of which read gray. The websites of 78 of them link a code on Municode, which answered this map's requests with a bot check we did not work around, and 30 have websites that could not be read; the register's last column says what was tried for each government.
- Peachtree City and Jekyll Island. Peachtree City's paths page sends riders to its Ordinance 1253, chapters 70 and 78, which sit on a host this map could not read; its paths read gray. Jekyll Island's rule is read in the Authority's code as codified in 2023, the newest copy on its site; a later supplement sits on Municode, which could not be read.
- Other rules not read. On 989.4 mapped miles the deciding rule was not read: the local codes and Peachtree City's ordinance above, state land outside a park or WMA (Georgia DNR's, Georgia DOT's, the Forestry Commission's and the World Congress Center Authority's), military land at Fort Moore, Kings Bay and Fort Stewart, and a few stretches of Park Service land no unit boundary names.
- Managers by place. Where no record names a manager, the map gives a trail to the city or town it lies in, or to its county outside every city: 738 of the local miles. A trail on an owners' association's or a private park's ground can sit in that count; the register flags each one.
- Park boundaries. A Park Service boundary is the area Congress authorized, and inside the Chattahoochee River NRA's it holds city and county parks and state land; where a land record names a non-federal manager, that manager's rule is applied, and on McQueen's Island Trail both records are printed.
- Two texts, both printed. The Wildlife Resources Division's guide keeps e-bikes on national forest land to roads open for motor vehicles, while the Forest Service opens its motorized trails too. The Chattahoochee River NRA's compendium lists fewer bicycle trails than 36 CFR 7.90 lets the superintendent open. The forest's records list bicycles on the Appalachian Trail, which the guide closes.
- Our readings, labelled. Where a posted rule bars "motorized vehicles" without saying whether an e-bike is one, both readings are printed and the trail is gray. Which WMA each of the guide's e-bike notes belongs to is our reading of its columns, each checked against the listing's directions. A path counts as "adjacent to a highway" when at least 80% of it lies within 25 meters of a parallel public road, our measure; the statute does not define the word.
- The trail layers. The Motor Vehicle Use Map's trail layer may leave out a route the forest designates. Where a trail record calls a forest trail motorized and the map draws no route, the trail is gray.
- Federal rules still moving. The Park Service's proposed rule on bicycle use in park areas (91 FR 56095) and the Forest Service's travel-management review (91 FR 54686) are not in effect, and this map follows the rules in force on October 29 to 31, 2026.
- When this map expires. A rule here changes when the General Assembly amends § 40-6-303, when the Division or the parks change their rules, when the Forest Service, the Park Service or the Corps changes its own, and when a city or county adopts one. Check the verification date at the top before you ride.
- This is not legal advice. Rules change, and a posted sign at the trail governs. The map reflects the rules as read October 29 to 31, 2026.
