1,543 trails · 2,148 miles in 56 of Arkansas's 75 counties · 1,165 miles open to Class 1 · 8 local rules read · Rules verified October 26, 2026

Quick Answer: Arkansas lets Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes ride paths open to bicycles unless the local authority bars them, and keeps Class 3 off paths away from roads unless that authority permits it. State park trails take Class 1 only. Of 2,148 mapped miles, 1,165 are open to Class 1, 588 to Class 2 and 436 to Class 3.

Every e-bike in our full range ships free to your Arkansas door.

Arkansas bike trails map colored by e-bike access: green trails take Class 1, 2 and 3, purple Class 1 and 3, blue Class 1 and 2 only, orange Class 1 only, dashed red are closed, gray are unsettled, unread, private or have no manager on record

Each line is a trail or path from Arkansas State Parks' line inventory, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission's WMA access layer, the USDA Forest Service, the National Park Service or OpenStreetMap, colored by the e-bike rule that governs it. The numbers mark Arkansas's eight planning and development districts, in the order the regions appear below.

Arkansas's Electric Bicycle Act opens most of the state's paths to you and lets the local authority over each path change the default.

Ark. Code Ann. § 27-51-1705(a)(1) says "A class 1 electric bicycle or a class 2 electric bicycle may be used on a bicycle path or multi-use path where bicycles are permitted." Subsection (a)(2) adds that "the local authority having jurisdiction over a bicycle path or multi-use path may prohibit the operation of a class 1 electric bicycle or a class 2 electric bicycle on that path."

Subsection (b) keeps a Class 3 off those paths: "A class 3 electric bicycle shall not be operated on a bicycle path or multi-use path unless it is within or adjacent to a highway or roadway, or unless the local authority having jurisdiction over the path permits the operation of a class 3 electric bicycle."

Your e-bike On a bicycle or multi-use path, by default What the local authority over the path may do
Class 1 or Class 2 Rides it where bicycles are permitted (§ 27-51-1705(a)(1)) Prohibit it ((a)(2))
Class 3 Rides it only within or beside a highway or roadway (§ 27-51-1705(b)) Permit it elsewhere ((b))

The section has not changed since the General Assembly passed it as Act 956 of 2017. The legislature's tables of code sections amended list §§ 27-51-1701 to -1706 in the 2017 regular session and in none of the 18 sessions since, through the 2025 regular session and the 2026 fiscal and first extraordinary sessions; for the 2020 and 2021 first extraordinary sessions, whose tables come back empty, we read every act instead.

73 managers share that authority across this map. Each trail below carries its manager's name where a record names one and, where the rule could be read, what that rule says about e-bikes, with a link to it, all of it in the trail register so you can check any ride trail by trail.

For the rest of Arkansas's e-bike law, from labels to age limits, read Arkansas e-bike laws. To compare Arkansas's trail rules with other states', open bike trails by state.

Crossing a state line? The same trail-by-trail map exists for Texas bike trails across Arkansas's southwest border, and for Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Maine, New York, Florida, Colorado, Utah, Oregon and Washington State. For California, our California trail guide explains who manages each kind of trail, and our national guide to e-bike trails near you shows how to find the manager of a trail anywhere in the US.

Takeaway

A Class 1 e-bike covers the most of Arkansas: 1,165 mapped miles against 588 for a Class 2 and 436 for a Class 3. State park trails from Hobbs to the Delta Heritage Trail take Class 1 alone, and so do the Game and Fish Commission's WMA trails and the city trails of Bella Vista and Hot Springs.

26% of the mapped miles read gray, and most of that gray is local: the rules of 49 of the 57 cities, towns and counties that manage a mapped trail could not be read, on 210 mapped miles, and Rogers and North Little Rock keep "motorized" vehicles off their trails without saying whether an e-bike is one, on 74 and 27 miles. The downloadable register says why each gray trail is gray.

How to read the map

Match your trail's color first, then check who manages it. Green means all three classes may ride, blue means Class 1 and Class 2, orange means Class 1 alone, and dashed red means a published rule keeps e-bikes off. Purple marks the one trail open to Class 1 and Class 3, Hot Springs National Park's Pullman Trail, where you may ride a Class 2 only while you pedal.

Gray holds four kinds of trail: a trail whose rule or records read two ways, both printed on this page; a manager whose rule could not be read or is not posted; private or nonprofit land; and a trail no record assigns to a manager. The register names the case for each gray trail.

A color is the trail's rule, and the trail's own signs still apply. A seasonal closure, a trailhead sign or a posted speed limit binds you on top of the color, and the region tables below print the limits each rule sets: 15 mph on Fayetteville's and Bentonville's trails, 20 mph on Hot Springs' parks and trails, and the helmets Rogers and Bentonville require among them.

Your bike's label tells you its class. Since January 1, 2018, Ark. Code Ann. § 27-51-1704(b) has required every maker or distributor to "apply a label in at least nine-point type that is permanently affixed in a prominent location to each electric bicycle" giving its class number, top assisted speed and motor wattage.

Under § 27-51-1702(4) an electric bicycle has "fully operable pedals and an electric motor of less than seven hundred fifty watts (750 W)", and a Class 3 is one whose assist stops when it "reaches the speed of twenty-eight miles per hour (28 m.p.h.)".

Who decides on each trail

State law sets the default, and the manager writes the exception. The table below sorts every mapped mile by the kind of body that manages it. Read across to find what that body allows you to ride.

Each row's miles are the sum of its trails' stretches, rounded so that together the rows make the state's 2,148.3 mapped miles. A trail whose stretches fall under two rules sits in each row with the miles that lie there, so if you find a trail twice, that is why.

Takeaway

Cities and counties manage 33% of the mapped miles, 714 in all. Of the 57 cities, towns and counties that manage a mapped trail, 8 publish a rule that was read for this map, covering 71% of their miles.

Arkansas State Parks trails

In a state park, you may ride only a Class 1 on the trails, and any class on the park roads. 22 CAR § 50-122 says "All Class 1 pedal assist bicycles are allowed on all Arkansas state park trails designated for use by bicycles", naming mountain bike trails, paved and unpaved multi-use trails and "All-terrain vehicle and off-road motorcycle trails".

Subsection (c) says "Arkansas state parks prohibit the use of Class 2 electric bikes and Class 3 pedal assist bicycles on mountain bike trails or paved and unpaved multi-use trails that allow bicycles of any type." Subsection (b) opens the park roads: "Class 1 and Class 3 pedal assist bicycles and Class 2 electric bikes are allowed on all roads within Arkansas state parks."

The Parks Division proposed the rule in October 2020 as Park Directive 3097, and the Code of Arkansas Rules carries it under the directive's date, December 18, 2020. The Code's own site refused a connection from our tools, so the text quoted here is its Internet Archive copy of October 9, 2026, which matches the Register filing word for word.

The parks manage 274 mapped miles of bicycle trail on 17 parks, and on all of it you may ride a Class 1 only: the Delta Heritage Trail's 70.0 miles, Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area's Hidden Diversity Multi-Use Trail, Devil's Den, Mount Nebo, Village Creek, Cane Creek, Pinnacle Mountain, Lake Fort Smith and Woolly Hollow among them.

The park's own page counts 74.1 completed miles of the Delta Heritage Trail, "including 15 miles of shared-use roadway on the Mississippi River Mainline Levee" (Delta Heritage Trail State Park), against this map's 70.0.

The parks' line inventory records the corridor as one bicycle trail, so the map prints all of it Class 1 alone, while on a road within a state park subsection (b) admits every class. Ride the levee stretch on a Class 1 if you want no doubt.

On 10.8 more miles the parks' own line inventory, or the Game and Fish Commission's on Natural Heritage land, lists the trail without bicycles while another map draws it open, at Mount Magazine, Devil's Den, Cane Creek and Rattlesnake Ridge, as the register records for each. Those read gray, and if you find a hiking-only sign at the trailhead, it settles them.

Game and Fish Commission WMAs

On a Game and Fish Commission WMA outside the national forests, you may ride a Class 1 where a regular bicycle may, and any other e-bike keeps to the open roads. AGFC Code 20.19(A) says "It is unlawful on a WMA to operate any motorized vehicle including an electric or motorized bicycle" off open access roads and parking areas, "where no road exists" or "on any trail, levee, or dam".

Its exception L carves out the Class 1: "A Class 1 electric bicycle (as defined under Code 01.00-C, ELECTRIC BICYCLE) may be used on trails and areas where regular bicycles are allowed." On the Commission's 96 mapped miles of WMA trail open to bicycles, on 7 WMAs, you may ride a Class 1 alone; most of them lie at Big Timber, DeGray Lake and Jack Mountain.

Natural area WMAs close to every bicycle, yours included. Code 20.25(B) says "It also is unlawful to use or possess a motorized vehicle, horse, mule, or bicycle on natural area WMAs."

On the WMAs inside the national forests, Caney Creek, Sylamore and Winona among them, exception E makes vehicles "subject to the USDA Forest Service OHV policy on roads and trails as published in 36 CFR 261", so on their trails you follow the forest's rule, and this map colors them by it.

The national forests

In the Ouachita and Ozark-St. Francis national forests, an e-bike is a motor vehicle, and you may ride it only where the forest designates it. The Forest Service counts "Any vehicle which is self-propelled" as a motor vehicle (36 CFR 212.1) and designates motor vehicle use "by vehicle class" (36 CFR 212.51(a)).

36 CFR 261.13 then makes it "prohibited to possess or operate a motor vehicle on National Forest System lands in that administrative unit or Ranger District other than in accordance with those designations."

The two forests' November 2024 announcement puts it plainly: "The USDA Forest Service currently allows e-bikes on roads that are designated for motorized vehicle use as indicated on official Forest Motor Vehicle Use maps." The forests hold 833 mapped miles, 468 of them in the Ouachita.

The Womble and Syllamo trails

The same announcement reports the forests' decision "authorizing use of all classes of electric bikes (e-bike) on the Womble and Syllamo Mountain Bike Trails", about 38 miles on the Womble and 51 on Syllamo, and says "Full implementation of this decision is planned to take effect in January 2025".

The Ouachita's motor vehicle use map table of March 2026 now lists the Womble Trail, north and south, from mile 0 to mile 37.8, as open to Class 1, 2 and 3 e-bikes all year. On this map the Womble's main trail takes all three classes, and so do 37.9 of Syllamo's mapped miles.

The table does not list the Womble's spurs, among them the Rocky Shoals Spur (FS#75), so this map shows their 3.7 mapped miles closed.

Syllamo's Jack's Branch Loop reads gray. The decision leaves out "a portion of the Jack's Branch Loop of the Syllamo Trail System that falls within the designated Wild and Scenic River corridor of North Sylamore Creek", saying "the authorization for e-bike use in this area will be deferred until such time as the Comprehensive River Management Plan is updated" (decision announcement).

No record read for this map draws where that corridor portion begins, and the forest's trail records list e-bikes as a managed use on the rest of Syllamo but on none of the loop's 16.4 mapped miles. Both readings are printed: ask the Sylamore Ranger District before you ride Jack's Branch.

Motorized trails

Where the forest's motor vehicle use map opens a trail to e-bikes, you may ride it on any class, 316 mapped miles in all. They are the forests' off-highway vehicle and multi-use systems, and nearly all of their miles lie at Wolf Pen Gap, Sugar Creek, Fourche Mountain and Belle Starr in the Ouachita and at Brock Creek, Moccasin Gap, Mill Creek, Huckleberry Mountain and the Bradford and West Outer loops in the Ozark-St. Francis.

Two routes on the map, 6.3 miles in the Magazine Mountain district, are open to four-wheel-drive vehicles over 50 inches wide, one of them to two-wheel-drive vehicles that wide too, and list no e-bike class, so they read closed to e-bikes.

On 7.8 more miles, most of them at Wolf Pen Gap and Huckleberry Mountain, a trail record or the Game and Fish Commission's layer lists ATVs or motorcycles while the map does not draw the trail; they read gray, because 36 CFR 261.13 holds you to the map's designations.

Every other forest trail

The rest of the forests' trails, 414 mapped miles, are closed to your e-bike, whatever its class. They include the Ouachita National Recreation Trail, the Lake Ouachita Vista Trail (LOViT), the Bear Creek loops, the Little Missouri Trail and Possum Kingdom in the Ouachita, and Wedington, White Rock-Shores Lake and the Deer Tower trails in the Ozark-St. Francis.

The motor vehicle use map opens two short stretches of the Ouachita Trail, 0.5 mile in all, to motorcycles and e-bikes. The other 155.0 mapped miles in the forest are closed.

Hot Springs National Park and the Buffalo National River

At Hot Springs National Park, you may ride one trail, the Pullman, and you pedal while you ride it. The park's compendium says "The following trails have been authorized for bicycle and e-bike use. Pullman Trail" and "E-bikes are allowed in Hot Springs National Park where traditional bicycles are allowed. E-bikes are prohibited where traditional bicycles are prohibited."

It adds that "Except where use of motor vehicles by the public is allowed, using the electric motor to move an e-bike without pedaling is prohibited." On a Class 2, you may therefore ride the Pullman only while you pedal, and the map shows its 0.7 mapped mile as Class 1 and 3. Every other park trail is closed to bicycles, so this map leaves them off.

On the Buffalo National River, keep your bike off the trails. The park's general regulations say "Bicycles are not permitted on trails", so the Buffalo's trails are not on this map either.

Its compendium opens administrative roads that are "closed to motor vehicle use by the public, but open to motor vehicle use for administrative purposes" to "non-motorized bicycles and class I and II electric bikes (e-bikes)", while roads posted "Do Not Enter" stay closed to both.

The Buffalo's compendium defines an e-bike by "an electric motor of less than 750 watts", while the Park Service's regulation, 36 CFR 1.4, says "not more than 750 watts"; a bike rated under 750 watts meets both.

Army Corps of Engineers lakes

On a Corps lake, the District Commander decides where a bicycle may leave the road, and this map found no e-bike designation for any of them. 36 CFR 327.2 applies to all vehicles, "bicycles, or any other such equipment" among them, and says "The operation and/or parking of a vehicle off authorized roadways is prohibited except at locations and times designated by the District Commander."

The Corps' 59 mapped miles read gray: the Ozarks Keystone Trail and Lost Bridge Trail at Beaver Lake, the Bear Creek Cycle Trail at Lake Greeson and the Old Post Park and Ouita Coal Company mountain bike trails on Lake Dardanelle among them. 36 CFR 327.26 adds that "state and local laws and ordinances shall apply on project lands and waters", so the Electric Bicycle Act rides with you there as well. Call the project office before you ride.

City and county rules

Inside a city or county, read its own rule before you trust the statute's default. Of the 57 cities, towns and counties that manage a mapped trail, 8 publish a rule or posted trail rules that were read for this map, covering 71% of their trail miles. The table lists each one.

Rules that name e-bikes

Three of them follow the state parks: you may ride a Class 1 only. Bella Vista's trails FAQ says "Class 1 E-bikes are allowed on Bella Vista trails" and "No gas or other electrically powered vehicles (except maintenance or emergency vehicles) are allowed on Bella Vista trails." That covers the city's 126 mapped miles, the Back 40 and Tunnel Vision among them.

Hot Springs' e-bike policy, effective August 4, 2021, says "Class 1 e-bikes are allowed for use on all city parks and trails" and "Class 2 and 3 e-bikes are prohibited for use on all city parks and trails"; the city's policy page adds that "The parks and trails system in Hot Springs has a speed limit of no more than 20 miles per hour."

Sebastian County's parks use the state parks' words: "All Class 1 pedal assist bicycles are allowed on all Sebastian County Park trails designated for use by bicycles."

Fayetteville admits your e-bike and names no class. The city's trail rules say "Electric bicycles, electric scooters and motorized wheelchairs are permitted on trails", "Other motorized vehicles are prohibited" and "Trail speed limit is 15 MPH."

On its paved trails away from a road, you may ride a Class 1 or 2, and this map reads a Class 3 two ways, because § 27-51-1705(b) needs the city's permission for a Class 3 and the page never names one.

On its 47 mapped miles of natural-surface trail, Kessler Mountain and the Fayetteville Traverse among them, only Class 1 is printed as settled: the city's code on Municode could not be read, and it may treat dirt trails apart.

Little Rock keeps the state's rule. The city's Bike Friendly Community application says "an Arkansas state law states that Class 1 & 2 e-bikes can be ridden on shared-use trails but Class 3 bikes cannot" and that "the City of Little Rock has not changed any provision."

This map applies the statute's default to its 35 mapped miles: you may ride a Class 1 or 2 on them, and a Class 3 on the paths that run beside a road.

Posted rules that never name e-bikes

Bentonville's posted Trail Rules say "Motor vehicles prohibited" and "Trail speed limit is 15 miles per hour", and they require a helmet of every bicycle rider 14 and younger. The Electric Bicycle Act says "An electric bicycle is not a motor vehicle" (§ 27-51-1703(2)), so this map applies the statute's default to the city's 77 mapped miles of trail away from a road and its 20 beside one.

The city's code sits on Municode, which could not be read, so treat the posted rules as the city's word until it tells you otherwise. Bentonville also runs an e-bike rebate for its residents, for a new e-bike of any of the three classes bought from a participating Bentonville shop (the city's rebate FAQ).

Rules against "motorized" vehicles

Rogers and North Little Rock keep motorized vehicles off their trails and never say whether your e-bike is one. Rogers says "Motorized vehicles are prohibited" and requires a helmet of every bicycle rider; North Little Rock says "Only non-motorized forms of transportation are allowed with the exception of motorized wheelchairs and emergency or maintenance vehicles."

State law says an e-bike "is not a motor vehicle", but "motorized" is a broader word, and neither city's code could be read. This page prints both readings and colors those 74 and 27 mapped miles gray; call the parks department before you ride.

Rules that could not be read

The codes of 49 cities, towns and counties could not be read, and their trails read gray. 24 of those codes sit on Municode, which answered every request with a bot check we did not work around; the other 25 are published on the governments' own sites, were found on no code host, or are missing from the code-host roster we checked. The register's last column says what was tried for each one.

Springdale, Jonesboro, Eureka Springs, Maumelle, Siloam Springs, Fort Smith, Conway and Searcy hold most of those 210 mapped miles. If no local rule exists, the statute's default applies there: you may ride a Class 1 or 2 where bicycles may ride, and a Class 3 beside a road.

Named trails riders ask about

The trails and trail parks people search for by name, each with every rule that governs its mapped miles. A row adds up all of a trail's mapped stretches; where a trail crosses several managers, each manager's rule is listed with its miles, rounded so a row's parts add to its total.

The Razorback Regional Greenway shows why the manager matters more than the trail's name. On one paved corridor, Fayetteville's and Bentonville's stretches take Class 1 and 2, and Class 3 where they run beside a road, Bella Vista's takes Class 1 alone, Rogers' sits under its ban on motorized vehicles, and Springdale's, Lowell's and Johnson's read gray because their codes could not be read, as does a stretch no record assigns a manager.

Takeaway

The Womble and Syllamo are the only national forest singletrack the forests have opened to e-bikes by decision, and outside Syllamo's Jack's Branch Loop you may ride them on any class. On a Class 1 you may ride the state parks' trails, from Hobbs and Devil's Den to Mount Nebo and Village Creek, and Bella Vista's Back 40; at Coler and Slaughter Pen, check the owner's or the city's posted rules first.

Arkansas bike trails, region by region

The eight regions below are Arkansas's eight planning and development districts, drawn on the map above, with each trail stretch placed in the district that holds its midpoint; the names are ours, after the two largest places in each.

Open your region for its map, its longest named trails and their rules, and a collapsed list of every mapped trail by rule. A trail that crosses a district line appears in each region with the miles that lie there.

Fayetteville and Springdale

Fayetteville, Springdale and northwest Arkansas bike trails map colored by e-bike access: green trails take Class 1, 2 and 3, blue Class 1 and 2 only, orange Class 1 only, dashed red are closed, gray are unsettled, unread, private or have no manager on record

Northwest Arkansas holds more mapped trail than any other region, under more different e-bike rules. Its 791 mapped miles lie in Baxter, Benton, Boone, Carroll, Madison, Marion, Newton, Searcy and Washington counties; 420 are open, 75 are closed and 296 read gray.

Bella Vista's Class 1 trails, Bentonville's network under its posted rules, Fayetteville's paved and natural-surface trails, Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area and Devil's Den State Park carry most of the open miles. The closed ones are the Ozark-St. Francis's trails, Wedington and the Deer Tower trails among them.

Most of the gray miles sit under Rogers' ban on motorized vehicles, on the trails of Springdale, Eureka Springs (Lake Leatherwood Park among them), Siloam Springs and Lowell, whose codes could not be read, on the Corps' Ozarks Keystone Trail at Beaver Lake, at the Peel Compton Foundation's Coler Mountain Bike Preserve, whose owner decides, and on trails no record assigns a manager.

Fort Smith and Van Buren

Fort Smith, Van Buren and western Arkansas bike trails map colored by e-bike access: green trails take Class 1, 2 and 3, blue Class 1 and 2 only, orange Class 1 only, dashed red are closed, gray are unsettled, unread, private or have no manager on record

Western Arkansas opens more forest trail to your e-bike than any other region, nearly all of it on motorized routes. Its 388 mapped miles lie in Polk, Sebastian, Crawford, Franklin, Scott and Logan counties; 247 are open, 114 are closed and 27 read gray.

The forests' multi-use and off-highway vehicle systems carry most of the open miles, Sugar Creek, Fourche Mountain, Belle Starr and Wolf Pen Gap in the Ouachita and the Bradford, West Outer and Mill Creek loops in the Ozark-St. Francis, with Lake Fort Smith State Park's Boston Mountain Multi-Use Trail and Sebastian County's park trails open to a Class 1.

The closed miles are the forests' other trails, the Ouachita Trail's among them. The gray ones lie on Fort Smith's and Alma's trails, whose codes could not be read, at Mount Magazine State Park, where two records disagree about bicycles, and on forest trails another record lists for motor vehicles while the motor vehicle use map does not draw them, most of them at Wolf Pen Gap and Huckleberry Mountain.

Hot Springs and Russellville

Hot Springs, Russellville and west central Arkansas bike trails map colored by e-bike access: green trails take Class 1, 2 and 3, purple Class 1 and 3, blue Class 1 and 2 only, orange Class 1 only, dashed red are closed, gray are unsettled, unread, private or have no manager on record

West central Arkansas has the most closed trail on this map, and the Womble, one of the two forest trails the forests opened to every e-bike class by decision. Its 491 mapped miles lie in Garland, Hot Spring, Montgomery, Pope, Yell, Pike, Clark, Conway, Perry and Johnson counties; 224 are open, 216 are closed and 51 read gray.

The Game and Fish Commission's trails at Big Timber, DeGray Lake and Jack Mountain, the Womble, the Moccasin Gap trails, Mount Nebo State Park, Hot Springs' city trails and the Pullman Trail carry most of the open miles. Nearly all the closed ones are the Ouachita's, the Ouachita Trail, the LOViT, the Bear Creek loops and the Little Missouri Trail among them.

Most of the gray miles lie on Corps land, the Bear Creek Cycle Trail at Lake Greeson and the mountain bike trails on Lake Dardanelle among them, on the trails of Clarksville, Arkadelphia and Russellville, whose codes could not be read, and on trails no record assigns a manager.

Little Rock and Conway

Little Rock, Conway and central Arkansas bike trails map colored by e-bike access: green trails take Class 1, 2 and 3, blue Class 1 and 2 only, orange Class 1 only, dashed red are closed, gray are unsettled, unread, private or have no manager on record

Across the river, Little Rock and North Little Rock answer the e-bike question differently. Central Arkansas's 168 mapped miles lie in Pulaski, Lonoke, Faulkner, Prairie, Saline and Monroe counties; 66 are open, 9 are closed and 93 read gray.

Little Rock's trails under the state's rule, the Southwest Trail and the city's Arkansas River Trail stretches among them, Woolly Hollow's Enders Fault Mountain Bike Trail, Pinnacle Mountain State Park and Bell Slough WMA carry most of the open miles. The closed miles lie on the Ouachita's Wildcat Mountain Trail.

Most of the gray ones lie under North Little Rock's "non-motorized" rule, on Maumelle's and Conway's trails, whose codes could not be read, on the Natural Heritage Commission's Blue Mountain and Rattlesnake Ridge natural areas, on Camp Robinson's trails, and on trails no record assigns a manager.

Jonesboro and Paragould

Jonesboro, Paragould and east Arkansas bike trails map colored by e-bike access: green trails take Class 1, 2 and 3, blue Class 1 and 2 only, orange Class 1 only, dashed red are closed, gray are unsettled, unread, private or have no manager on record

In east Arkansas, the open miles are the state parks' and most of the gray ones are Jonesboro's. The region's 112 mapped miles lie in Clay, Craighead, Crittenden, Cross, Greene, Lawrence, Lee, Mississippi, Poinsett, Randolph, St. Francis and Phillips counties; 58 are open, 2 are closed and 52 read gray.

The Delta Heritage Trail's northern miles and Village Creek State Park's trails carry the open miles, Class 1 only. Craighead Forest Park's trails and Jonesboro's paths read gray because the city's code could not be read, along with the trails of Walnut Ridge, Paragould, West Memphis and Helena-West Helena among other towns, the Big River Park Conservancy's trails, whose owner decides, and trails no record assigns a manager.

Southeast Arkansas is almost all state park trail, and on a Class 1 you may ride nearly every mile of it. Its 55 mapped miles lie in Chicot, Desha, Drew, Jefferson, Lincoln, Cleveland, Grant, Ashley, Arkansas and Bradley counties; 53 are open and 2 read gray.

The Delta Heritage Trail's southern miles, Cane Creek State Park's Cane Creek Lake Trail and Lake Chicot State Park carry the open miles. The gray ones lie at Cane Creek, where two records disagree about bicycles, on Monticello's and Pine Bluff's paths, whose codes could not be read, and at McCloy Park, state land whose agency the records do not name.

Where riders get caught out

Seven situations trip up riders on Arkansas trails, each one a detail the color alone does not show. Read them before you plan a ride.

  1. A Class 3 on a path away from the road. § 27-51-1705(b) keeps you off unless the path runs beside a road or its local authority permits Class 3, and no city or county on this map has published a permission that names Class 3.
  2. A Class 2 where Class 1 rides alone. State park trails, the Commission's WMA trails, Bella Vista's and Hot Springs' city trails and Sebastian County's park trails all take Class 1 alone, on Fayetteville's natural-surface trails only Class 1 is settled, and on the Pullman Trail you may ride a Class 2 only while you pedal.
  3. A national forest trail. Unless the forest designates it, an e-bike of any class stays off; the Womble, Syllamo outside Jack's Branch and the motorized routes on the forests' motor vehicle use maps are the exceptions, and the LOViT and most of the Ouachita Trail are closed.
  4. A rule against motorized vehicles. Rogers and North Little Rock keep "motorized" vehicles off their trails without saying whether an e-bike is one; ask the parks department before you ride.
  5. A Class 3 rider's age. § 27-51-1706(a)(1) says "A person under sixteen (16) years of age shall not operate a class 3 electric bicycle", and under (b) any operator or passenger under 21 on a Class 3 "shall wear a helmet".
  6. A bike that is not an e-bike. A motor of 750 watts or more puts your bike outside § 27-51-1702(4), and § 27-51-1704(c) says "A person shall not tamper with or modify an electric bicycle so as to change the motor-powered speed capability or engagement of an electric bicycle" without replacing its label.
  7. A trail closed to every bicycle. Natural area WMAs, the Buffalo National River's trails and Hot Springs National Park's trails other than the Pullman close to bicycles, so they close to your e-bike as well.

What a wrong turn can cost you

On a WMA, breaking the vehicle rule is a Class 1 offense. Code 20.19 carries "PENALTY: Class 1", and the Commission's Code 01.00-I sets a Class 1 offense at a "Fine of $100 to $1,000 and a jail sentence of 0 to 30 days."

In a national forest, 36 CFR 261.1b says "the punishment for violation of any prohibition in or order issued under this part shall be imprisonment of not more than six months or a fine in accordance with the applicable provisions of 18 U.S.C. 3571 or both."

On a Corps lake, a violation "may be punished by a fine of not more than $5,000 or imprisonment for not more than six months or both" (36 CFR 327.25). The Electric Bicycle Act sets no penalty of its own.

Your Arkansas trail checklist, in five steps

  1. Find the trail and its manager. Look it up on its region's map or in the downloadable register; the manager's rule is the one you follow.
  2. Read your label. A Class 3 loses every path away from a road whose local authority has not permitted it, and a throttle Class 2 loses the state parks' trails, the WMA trails and every trail that takes Class 1 alone.
  3. Check the land. In a national forest, ride only the Womble, the routes the motor vehicle use map opens and Syllamo outside Jack's Branch; on a Game and Fish Commission WMA outside the forests, keep to roads unless you ride a Class 1 on a bicycle trail.
  4. Check the rider's age. Under 16, no one operates a Class 3; under 21, a Class 3 rider or passenger wears a helmet. On their trails, Rogers requires a helmet of every bicycle rider and Bentonville of every rider 14 and younger.
  5. Read the trailhead sign. A posted closure, season or speed limit governs the trail you are on, so follow it, and yield to people on foot.

Sidewalks, roads and bike lanes

The Electric Bicycle Act gives you a bicycle rider's rights and duties, and no license or registration. § 27-51-1703 says that, "For the purpose of this subchapter", the act's own, an electric bicycle or its operator "shall be afforded all the rights and privileges, and be subject to all of the duties, of a bicycle or the operator of a bicycle".

It adds that "An electric bicycle is not a motor vehicle" and that your e-bike "is not subject to the provisions of this title relating to insurance, licensing, registration, operator’s licenses, and certificates of title."

The road rules for bicycles moved in 2019, and they define a bicycle as human-powered. The 2017 act had written e-bikes into § 27-49-111, which gave "Every person riding a bicycle, electric bicycle, or an animal" a driver's rights and duties on a highway.

Act 650 of 2019 cut that section back to "A person riding an animal or driving any animal drawing a vehicle upon a highway" and gave bicycles a subchapter of their own. There, § 27-51-1802 says "A person operating a bicycle has the rights and duties applicable to a driver of a vehicle", and § 27-51-1803 lets that rider slow, yield and go through a stop sign without stopping.

The subchapter defines a bicycle as "a human-powered vehicle", words Act 1067 of 2021 kept when it amended the definition, and it never names e-bikes. Whether its rules reach your e-bike is unsettled, so stop at stop signs until a court or the legislature settles it.

On a sidewalk, your city's rule decides. The Electric Bicycle Act says nothing about sidewalks. Hot Springs' policy, for one, admits a Class 1 to its city parks, which it defines as city property "equipped with play structures, benches, picnic tables, walkways and/or greenspaces", and says e-bikes "are permitted on city streets and roads".

For lights, passengers and the rest of the road rules, read Arkansas e-bike laws.

What changed, and what could change next

Arkansas's e-bike trail rules have moved in steps since 2017, and four changes could come next. Check them before you plan a season of riding.

When What changed Where to read it
April 7, 2017 The Electric Bicycle Act sets the three classes and the path rules, §§ 27-51-1701 to -1706 Act 956 of 2017
January 1, 2018 New e-bikes must carry a label with their class, top assisted speed and motor wattage § 27-51-1704(b)
April 2, 2019 The bicycle road rules move to §§ 27-51-1801 to -1803, and § 27-49-111 is cut back to animals Act 650 of 2019
December 18, 2020 State parks open their bicycle trails to Class 1 alone and their roads to every class 22 CAR § 50-122
April 30, 2021 A crosswalk rule for bicycles, § 27-51-1804, is added Act 1067 of 2021
August 4, 2021 Hot Springs admits Class 1 alone to its city parks and trails Hot Springs' e-bike policy
November 2024 The Ouachita and Ozark-St. Francis forests authorize all classes on the Womble and Syllamo, planned for January 2025 The forests' announcement
March 2026 The Ouachita's motor vehicle use map table lists the Womble open to Class 1, 2 and 3 all year The MVUM table

What could change next:

  • The General Assembly. Its next regular session convenes on January 11, 2027, and bills may be pre-filed from November 16, 2026 (the session's dates); no session since 2017 has amended the Electric Bicycle Act.
  • The Park Service. Its proposed rule on bicycle use in park areas (91 FR 56095) takes comments until November 2, 2026.
  • The Forest Service. Its proposed travel-management changes (91 FR 54686) are not in effect, and the forests reissue their motor vehicle use maps each year.
  • Jack's Branch Loop. The forests defer e-bikes on its Wild and Scenic River corridor portion until the Comprehensive River Management Plan is updated.

Choosing an e-bike for Arkansas trails

The class on your label decides how much of this map you can ride: 1,165 mapped miles on a Class 1, 588 on a Class 2 and 436 on a Class 3. Each color names the classes that may ride, so check a bike's class before you buy it.

Your bike's class Mapped miles it may ride Against a Class 1
Class 1: assist while you pedal, to 20 mph 1,165 The most of any class
Class 2: throttle, to 20 mph 588 577 fewer: the state parks' trails, the WMA trails and every Class 1-only trail
Class 3: assist while you pedal, to 28 mph 436 729 fewer: most paths away from a road

A Class 1 rides every open mile on this map. If you plan Hobbs, Devil's Den, the Delta Heritage Trail or Bella Vista's Back 40, buy a bike whose label says Class 1. A Class 3 suits a commute on Arkansas's roads and the paths beside them, and it may ride the Womble, the forests' motorized routes and Syllamo outside Jack's Branch too.

Where the records give a surface, Arkansas's trails are mostly dirt. 1,024 of this map's miles are natural surface, 316 are paved and 93 are crushed stone or gravel, while the records of 715 give no surface. If you ride the Ozark and Ouachita singletrack, a Class 1 e-mountain bike suits you; on the greenways and the Delta Heritage Trail's gravel, a commuter or hybrid does.

The bottom line

Ride a Class 1 e-bike and every open mile of this map is yours: the forests' motorized routes, the Womble and Syllamo, the state parks from Hobbs to the Delta Heritage Trail, Bella Vista's Back 40, Fayetteville's and Bentonville's networks and the Game and Fish Commission's WMA trails among them.

On a trail under a "motorized vehicle" rule, Rogers' and North Little Rock's among them, ask the manager before you ride, and in the national forests ride only the trails the forest has opened to e-bikes.

Shopping for one? Choose the class first: a Class 2 gives up 577 mapped miles here and a Class 3 gives up 729. Then compare e-mountain bikes for the Ozark singletrack or commuter e-bikes for the greenways, and the whole range ships to Arkansas free.

Before each new trail, find its color here, and read the sign at the trailhead before you ride. If you find a trail missing or a rule that has changed, email the trail's name and a link to the new rule to support@redtailebikes.com, and we will read its register row again.

Frequently asked questions

Are e-bikes allowed on Arkansas bike trails?

Yes on most of them: 1,165 of this map's 2,148 miles are open to a Class 1 and 588 to a Class 2. State law lets a Class 1 or Class 2 ride a bicycle path or multi-use path where bicycles are permitted unless the local authority bars it, and the manager's rule decides each trail.

Yes. Arkansas defines an electric bicycle as one with "fully operable pedals and an electric motor of less than seven hundred fifty watts (750 W)" that meets one of three classes (§ 27-51-1702), and the statute says "An electric bicycle is not a motor vehicle."

Are e-bikes allowed in Arkansas state parks?

A Class 1 may ride the trails designated for bicycles, and every class may ride the park roads. 22 CAR § 50-122 bars Class 2 and Class 3 from the parks' mountain bike trails and paved and unpaved multi-use trails, and an e-bike may not ride a trail that is closed to bicycles.

Can you ride an e-bike in the Ouachita National Forest?

Only where the forest designates it. The Forest Service treats an e-bike as a motor vehicle: in the Ouachita and the Ozark-St. Francis you may ride the Womble, the routes the motor vehicle use map opens to e-bikes and Syllamo outside Jack's Branch.

Every other forest trail on this map is closed, the LOViT and most of the Ouachita Trail among them, except the motorized trails the map does not draw and Jack's Branch, which read gray.

Can you ride an e-bike on the Womble Trail?

Yes, any class. The forests' 2024 decision authorized "all classes of electric bikes (e-bike) on the Womble and Syllamo Mountain Bike Trails", the Ouachita's March 2026 motor vehicle use map table lists the Womble open to Class 1, 2 and 3 e-bikes all year, and on this map the Womble's main trail reads green; its 3.7 mapped miles of spurs, which the table does not list, read closed.

Are e-bikes allowed on Arkansas WMA trails?

A Class 1, where regular bicycles may ride. AGFC Code 20.19 keeps every other e-bike to open roads and parking areas, natural area WMAs close to all bicycles, and the WMAs inside the national forests follow the Forest Service's rules.

Does Bentonville allow e-bikes on its trails?

Its posted Trail Rules bar motor vehicles, which state law says an e-bike is not, so this map applies the statute's default: Class 1 and 2 on its trails, at the posted 15 mph. A Class 3 may ride the paths beside a road, and the same rules require a helmet of every rider 14 and younger.

At the Coler preserve the owner sets the rules, and the Peel Compton Foundation's preserve page posts none for e-bikes.

Are e-bikes allowed on the Razorback Regional Greenway?

On most of it, and the class depends on the city. Fayetteville's and Bentonville's stretches take Class 1 and 2, and Class 3 where they run beside a road, Bella Vista's takes Class 1 alone, Rogers' sits under its ban on motorized vehicles, and Springdale's, Lowell's and Johnson's read gray, as does a short stretch no record assigns a manager.

Are e-bikes allowed on the Delta Heritage Trail?

A Class 1, yes. The trail is a state park, and all 70.0 of its mapped miles take Class 1 alone under 22 CAR § 50-122.

Can you ride an e-bike on hiking trails in Arkansas?

No. The statute opens paths "where bicycles are permitted", the state parks allow Class 1 on trails "designated for use by bicycles", the Commission on trails "where regular bicycles are allowed", and the Park Service says "E-bikes are prohibited where traditional bicycles are prohibited."

Do you need a license to ride an e-bike in Arkansas?

No. § 27-51-1703(3) says an e-bike's operator "is not subject to the provisions of this title relating to insurance, licensing, registration, operator’s licenses, and certificates of title."

Do e-bikes need to be registered in Arkansas?

No. The same section frees an electric bicycle from the title's registration and certificate of title provisions, and from its insurance provisions.

How old do you have to be to ride an e-bike in Arkansas?

There is no state minimum for a Class 1 or Class 2, and you must be 16 to operate a Class 3. § 27-51-1706(a) lets a rider under 16 ride as a passenger on a Class 3 "that is designed to accommodate passengers".

Do you need a helmet to ride an e-bike in Arkansas?

State law requires one only on a Class 3, and only under 21, but Rogers and Bentonville require more on their trails. § 27-51-1706(b) requires every operator or passenger under 21 on a Class 3 to "wear a helmet that meets or exceeds the safety standard for bicycle helmets under 16 C.F.R. part 1203."

On their trails, Rogers' trail guidelines say "Helmets required for all bicycle riders", and Bentonville's posted Trail Rules say "Helmets required for all bicycle riders 14 years and younger".

Where can you ride a Class 3 e-bike in Arkansas?

On roads, on paths beside a road, and where the manager allows it. On this map 436 miles are open to a Class 3, most of them the national forests' motorized routes, the Womble and Syllamo, and city paths that run beside a road.

Can you ride an e-bike on the sidewalk in Arkansas?

It depends on the city. The Electric Bicycle Act does not address sidewalks, so read your city's rule before you ride one; Hot Springs' policy, for one, admits a Class 1 to its city parks, walkways among their features, and says e-bikes "are permitted on city streets and roads".

What is the longest bike trail in Arkansas?

On this map, the longest trail open to an e-bike is the Delta Heritage Trail, with 70.0 mapped miles of gravel, open to a Class 1. The Ouachita National Recreation Trail runs longer, 156.1 mapped miles, but e-bikes are closed on 155.0 of them.

How we verified this map

  • Trails. 1,543 trails over 2,148 miles from Arkansas State Parks' line inventory (active trails), the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission's WMA access layer, the USDA Forest Service's trail records and motor vehicle use map trails, the National Park Service's trail layer and OpenStreetMap's trails and bicycle ways in a Geofabrik extract of October 25, 2026; a stretch that two sources both map is counted once.
  • Managers. Each trail's manager comes from the source layer where it is the manager's own record, then the State Parks and WMA boundaries, federal unit boundaries, the land manager the PAD-US database names, OpenStreetMap park operators and the place a trail lies in; the register says which record named it.
  • Rules. Every rule the map applies is quoted from its own text, whether the statute, the State Parks rule, the Commission's code, a federal regulation, a park compendium, a forest decision or a city or county page, retrieved and read October 26, 2026, and every quote was checked against the copy we saved. 8 of 57 local governments' rules were read, covering 71% of local trail miles.
  • The data. Every trail is a row in the register (CSV) with its manager, what its rule says about each class and the rule's source where one was read, and the same rows are published as JSON.
  • Demand. The trails and questions on this page were chosen from 2,503 Google and Bing search suggestions, 593 headings from the pages that rank, 39 forum posts read one by one and an 8-prompt AI panel. 415 of those 3,143 map to a section of this page, and the demand ledger lists every row with its source.

Limitations

  1. Local codes not read. The codes of 49 cities, towns and counties could not be read, on 210.0 mapped miles, all of which read gray. Municode answered with a bot check we did not work around, Eureka Springs' and Fort Smith's sites refused our requests, and the register's last column lists what was tried for each government. The 37 smallest of them, each under 4 mapped miles, were checked against our code-host roster of September 21, 2026 (20 with a code host, 8 with none found, 9 not on it) and not searched again.
  2. Other rules not read or not posted. On 235.7 mapped miles the deciding rule was not read: the local codes above, Natural Heritage Commission land, state land at McCloy Park whose agency the records do not name, Camp Robinson's trails, federal land at Murray Park whose agency the land records do not name, and 2.1 miles of Park Service land, most of them at Pea Ridge National Military Park, whose compendium was not read, the rest a short path OpenStreetMap places in Hot Springs National Park while the federal land records do not. They read gray.
  3. Manager not on record. 108.3 mapped miles carry no record naming a manager, among them Lincoln Lake Loop and the Hernando trail; they are gray.
  4. The statute's current text. The Arkansas Code's public edition is served through a reader that answered our tools with a CAPTCHA, so the statute is quoted from the acts as enacted: Act 956 of 2017 for the Electric Bicycle Act, and Act 650 of 2019 and Act 1067 of 2021 for the bicycle rules of the road. The legislature's amendment tables for every session since 2017, and the acts of the two special sessions those tables do not cover, show no change to §§ 27-51-1701 to -1706 since 2017 and none to §§ 27-51-1801 to -1804 since 2021.
  5. The State Parks rule's copy. The Code of Arkansas Rules refused our connections, so 22 CAR § 50-122 is quoted from the Internet Archive's copy of October 9, 2026, checked against the Arkansas Register filing of Park Directive 3097.
  6. Two texts, both printed. The Buffalo National River's compendium defines an e-bike's motor as "less than 750 watts" while the Park Service's regulation says "not more than 750 watts". On Jack's Branch Loop, the forests' decision defers e-bikes on the corridor portion while the trail records list e-bikes as a managed use on none of the loop. Little Rock's page says Class 3 "cannot" ride shared-use trails while the statute it describes lets a Class 3 ride a path beside a road. The Delta Heritage Trail's park counts 15 miles of its southern corridor as shared-use roadway on the levee, which the parks' line inventory records as bicycle trail; the map prints it Class 1 alone.
  7. Our readings, labelled. Where a rule bars "motorized vehicles" or allows only "non-motorized forms of transportation" without naming e-bikes, both readings are printed and the trail is gray. Fayetteville's page permits "Electric bicycles" without naming classes, so its Class 3 is read two ways away from roads, and only Class 1 is printed as settled on its dirt trails. Bentonville's verdict rests on its posted Trail Rules and the statute's default. A path counts as "adjacent to a highway or roadway" when at least 80% of it lies within 25 meters of a parallel public road, our measure of a word the statute does not define.
  8. The trail layers. The NWA Trails and Bikeways database reserves its rights, so it was not used, and Northwest Arkansas's trails come from the State Parks, Forest Service and OpenStreetMap layers. The motor vehicle use map's trail layer may leave out a trail the forest designates: it lists neither the Womble nor Syllamo, while the printed map's March 2026 table lists the Womble. Where another record calls a forest trail motorized, the trail is gray.
  9. Federal rules still moving. The Park Service has proposed a rule on bicycle use in park areas (91 FR 56095, comments open until November 2, 2026), and the Forest Service has proposed travel-management changes (91 FR 54686). Neither is in effect, and this map follows the rules in force on October 26, 2026.
  10. When this map expires. A rule here changes when the General Assembly amends the Electric Bicycle Act, when the Parks Division or the Game and Fish Commission changes its rule, when the Forest Service, the Park Service or the Corps changes its own, and when a city or county adopts one. Check the verification date at the top of this page before you ride.
  11. This is not legal advice. Rules change, and a posted sign at the trail governs. The map reflects the rules as read October 26, 2026.
