Quick answer. At least 29 people died in e-bike-related crashes and fires in the US in October 2026: 22 riders (3 on e-motos), 1 pedestrian and 6 in battery fires, in 16 states. Orange County has charged 12 parents over children's e-motos, a New Jersey bill would drop license rules for low-speed e-bikes, and CPSC recalled Urban Arrow cargo e-bikes.

Buying an e-bike this season? Start with the class and the motor rating, because most of October's new rules turn on both. Every e-bike we sell ships free to you within the contiguous United States, Addmotor's bikes to New York City addresses excepted, and our e-bike law hub sets out your state's rules.

How we verified this report

We searched US news reports and government records about e-bikes dated October 1 to 30, 2026, read 1,469 articles and the records they pointed to, and logged each crash, fire, case and rule once.

A death or injury is listed when a news report or an agency record we read describes it, and rows confirmed in an agency's own record, such as a medical examiner's case file or a state patrol report, are marked. We do not print the names of the people killed or hurt.

In this record

The record runs from the deaths and injuries through the courts, the federal and state actions and the cities, then out to the rest of the world. Each news section, from the month in brief to the rules taking effect next, links the reports and records it rests on.

October in brief: 12 records

Twelve records carried most of the month's weight, from a federal recall to a Bronx apartment fire. Each row links the document or report that settles it, and if you read only two sections, read the deaths and the battery fires: both change what you check before your next ride or charge.

E-bike accident news: 29 deaths in 16 states

These are the October deaths we could confirm in a news report or an agency record: 19 people riding e-bikes, 3 on e-motos, 1 pedestrian struck by an e-bike rider and 6 people killed in fires blamed on e-bike batteries. Of the 25 entries, 8 rest on an agency's own record; the others rest on local reporting that quotes police, fire officials or a coroner.

A death is dated to the day the person died, so a man hurt in a September crash who died on October 5 is counted here. Deaths from earlier crashes that were still in the news in October are in Reported in October, dated elsewhere. If you ride, the patterns after the table are the part of this record you can act on.

What the deaths have in common

Read together, the 22 rider deaths share three patterns, and they show you where the risk sat. This is our reading of the rows above, not an official count. Of the 22, 16 involved a motor vehicle, 6 of them a pickup truck or a semi; 5 involved no other vehicle, and 1 was a collision with a bicyclist.

Age cuts both ways. Of the 20 riders whose age was reported, 5 were under 18 and 6 were 60 or older, the oldest 79. Of the 5 teenagers, 3 were on e-motos, which police in Turlock, Dayton and Anne Arundel County recorded as electric motorcycles or dirt bikes. If you have a teenager on an e-moto, that is the pattern to note.

One New York City death appears only in the NYPD's records: an October 21 collision with a bicyclist on Park Avenue in the Bronx. We found no news report of it in searches on October 30 and 31, which is one reason the count above is a floor.

For riders: October's records point to traffic more than to the bike: 16 of the 22 rider deaths involved a motor vehicle, and 6 involved a pickup or a semi. Routes away from heavy trucks and lights after dark address the parts of that risk a rider controls; this is our reading of the rows above.

Injuries: 30 rider crashes in 18 states

These crashes put e-bike and e-moto riders in the hospital in October, as reported. Many injury crashes never reach the news, so the list is a floor: from October 1 to 27, the NYPD recorded 86 injured e-bike riders in New York, and the news we read reported 1 such crash there.

Of the 16 injured riders whose age was reported, 10 were children or teenagers, and 6 of the crashes involved an e-moto. If you ride with a child or a teenager, those ages are the line to read, and your town may set its own age rule.

One pedestrian injury reached the news: in Jacksonville, Fla., a woman walking on the Wonderwood Bridge sidewalk suffered broken bones and facial fractures when an e-bike rider struck her on October 17, her attorney told News4JAX.

New York City, by the NYPD's own records

New York's open data holds "all police reported motor vehicle collisions in NYC," e-bike crashes among them, and those records show the scale news coverage misses. From October 1 to 27, the NYPD recorded 111 crashes involving an e-bike: 86 e-bike riders were injured and 2 were killed, both in the Bronx (crash records, person records).

The same crashes hurt 11 pedestrians. The NYPD's data runs a few days behind, so October's last days are not in it yet. If you ride in New York, you can look these crashes up yourself on NYC Open Data, collision by collision.

NYPD records, Oct. 1 to Oct. 27 People
Crashes involving an e-bike 111

E-bike riders killed 2
Pedestrians injured in those crashes 11
Bicyclists injured in those crashes 4

Bar chart of the people injured in New York City e-bike crashes, October 2026

People injured in NYPD-reported crashes involving an e-bike, October 1 to 27, 2026, by who they were.

If you work with the data yourself, count riders by the vehicle they were on. In the crash table, an e-bike rider sits in none of the named columns: the October 7 crash shows one person killed, zero cyclists and zero motorists, and only the person record names the e-bike's operator as the one who died.

Battery fires

Two October fires blamed on e-bike batteries killed 6 people, and 7 more fires linked to e-bikes or their batteries were reported without a death. Regulators moved too: CPSC scheduled a hearing on a federal battery standard, and Washington, D.C., signed a certification law. If you keep an e-bike indoors, read the two fatal fires below before you charge it tonight.

Philadelphia, October 11. A fire in a rowhouse on the 3300 block of D Street at about 3:30 a.m. killed a 3-year-old girl. Investigators determined that a lithium-ion e-bike battery in an upstairs bedroom caused it and found no smoke detectors in the home (6abc). Her 22-year-old mother died days later, the Inquirer reported on October 17. If you charge an e-bike at home, check that your smoke alarms work.

The Bronx, October 28. A fire on the 11th floor of a 13-story public housing building at 320 Morris Avenue killed an 11-year-old boy. Two more children, 15 and 16, and a 33-year-old woman died of their injuries on October 30, police and the FDNY said, and a 37-year-old man survived (NY1, NBC New York).

At the Mayor's briefing, the fire commissioner said "an e-bike was placed in the pathway of the exit door" and counted 401 fires caused by lithium-ion batteries in New York so far this year, with 74 injuries and six deaths, "compared to 292 fires, 51 injuries and just one death last year" (transcript).

The federal standard. CPSC set a virtual oral-comment meeting for October 21 on its proposed safety standard for lithium-ion batteries in e-bikes and other micromobility products, docket CPSC-2025-0012 (FR Doc. 2026-20296). The notice set the meeting for 10 a.m. Eastern, with requests to speak due October 15; we did not find a record of what was said.

D.C.'s certification act. Washington's mayor signed the Micromobility Fire Safety Standards Amendment Act of 2026 on October 16; it is not yet in force.

Once the act takes effect after a 30-day congressional review, e-bikes sold or rented in the District "shall be evaluated, tested, and certified to UL 2849 or EN 15194," and their batteries to UL 2271 or EN 50604 (D.C. Act 26-420). Our D.C. e-bike law page covers riding rules in the District.

Fire departments' warnings. Oregon's State Fire Marshal opened Fire Prevention Month with a lithium-ion campaign that names e-bikes (KTVZ). Sarasota County Fire Department said lithium-ion batteries caused or contributed to seven structure fires there this year (FOX 13), and Wildwood, N.J.'s fire chief warned that batteries soaked in nor'easter floodwater can ignite (New Jersey 101.5). Our battery types guide explains the cells inside an e-bike pack.

For anyone who charges at home: the FDNY's advice from the Bronx briefing is to charge and store batteries outside where possible, never let them "block exits, doors or windows," never charge them while you sleep or are out of the room, and buy batteries certified by a safety laboratory such as UL.

Courts and charges

October's court news ran from new charges in deaths to guilty pleas in crashes from earlier years. The defendants are charged, not convicted, unless the row says they pleaded or were sentenced. If you were hurt in a crash, these cases show you how prosecutors charged drivers this month.

If you are the parent of a teenager who rides, the Orange County cases show prosecutors there now charge parents when a child rides an illegal e-moto, and your state's age rule is in our law hub.

The Walmart ruling sits beside a federal record: BRAIN noted that CPSC issued a second warning in June about some Ridstar e-bikes, including a front wheel that can detach without warning (BRAIN).

Federal: one e-bike recall and a battery hearing

The recall. Of the 43 recalls CPSC posted in October, one names an e-bike. On October 1, Gazelle USA recalled about 1,032 Urban Arrow cargo e-bikes sold in the US because "the front bolt in the seat post clamping mechanism can break, causing the seat to become loose," a fall hazard; owners get a free replacement seat post and saddle (CPSC recall 27004).

If you own one, stop riding it until your new seat post is on, and claim it through Gazelle USA.

Two other October recalls reach riders without naming an e-bike: Decathlon's Van Rysel GRVL AF bicycles, whose front lock nut can loosen (recall 27017), and the LED-light keys sold with Giant SureLock bike locks, whose button batteries children can reach (recall 27015).

The national parks proposal. The National Park Service's plan to allow bicycles and e-bikes on park roads open to public motor vehicles had drawn 809 comments by October 31, and comments close at 11:59 p.m. Eastern on November 2 (91 FR 56095). Our September record and our public lands guide cover what the rule would change.

Congress. No bill introduced in October names e-bikes in its title, and none of the 15 bills in this Congress whose text names e-bikes moved in October, by the bill-status files we read. A House bill introduced October 1, the Battery Safety Placarding Act, would require placards on containers, vehicles and rail cars carrying lithium-ion batteries (H.R. 10673).

States: Connecticut, D.C., Florida, New Jersey, Ohio, Colorado

If you live in one of these states, each part links our guide to that state's e-bike law.

Connecticut: "not more than" 750 watts from October 1

Connecticut's definition of an electric bicycle changed on October 1. It now covers a bicycle with operable pedals and "an electric motor of not more than seven hundred fifty watts of power"; the old text read "fewer" (Public Act 26-24, section 26). If your bike's motor is rated at 750 watts, it is now inside the definition. Our Connecticut e-bike law guide has the rest of the state's rules.

Washington, D.C.: certified e-bikes and batteries, after review

The certification act signed October 16 applies to e-bikes "manufactured, distributed, sold, or offered for lease or rent in the District"; it is not yet in force and takes effect only after Congress's 30-day review (D.C. Act 26-420).

A device offered for secondhand sale need not display the certification mark. If you buy an e-bike in the District after the act takes effect, look for the UL 2849 or EN 15194 mark on it; our D.C. e-bike law guide has the riding rules.

Florida: state forest rule in force October 20

Florida's Forest Service amended rule 5I-4.006, which governs bicycle and e-bike use in state forests, and the change took effect October 20 (notice). Check the forest's own trail rules before you ride; our Florida e-bike law guide covers roads and paths.

New Jersey: a bill to roll back the license rule

New Jersey senator Raj Mukherji's newly introduced S4830 would remove the licensing, registration and insurance requirements for low-speed e-bikes, which the bill limits to Classes 1 and 2 with a 20 mph motor-powered top speed, Electrek reported (Electrek). If you ride in New Jersey today, you still need the license, registration and insurance the law requires; today's rules are in our New Jersey e-bike law guide.

The National Bicycle Dealers Association and a consulting group said dozens of New Jersey bike shops have closed since the law, and estimated a 20% fall in retail sales of legal e-bikes to New Jersey buyers in 2026 (BRAIN). Assemblywoman Tennille R. McCoy scheduled an e-bike demonstration and education day for lawmakers at the State House on October 29 (BRAIN).

Ohio and Colorado: a statewide bill and a warning to sellers

Ohio's Senate Bill 477 would require helmets, bar riders under 14 and block rentals to people under 18, 13 ABC reported, noting that more than 2,200 Ohio localities already have their own rules.

In Colorado, Attorney General Phil Weiser issued an advisory that marketing a vehicle that does not meet the state's e-bike definition as an e-bike violates the Colorado Consumer Protection Act (Denver Gazette). If you shop in Colorado, a seller should not call a machine that misses the definition an e-bike. See our Ohio and Colorado law guides.

Cities, counties and schools: 24 actions

Cities moved faster than states in October, and many of their rules aim at young riders and fast machines. The 24 local actions below were adopted, advanced or put on an agenda in October; a few were proposals. Rows marked "Government record" link the city's own document; the rest link the local report.

Three rules show where local law is heading. Buckeye, Ariz., set age limits for all three e-bike classes, helmets under 18 and penalties for parents of riders under 16, in a code that takes effect November 6 (City of Buckeye).

If you ride in Palm Beach County, its draft would require you to be at least 14 and carry photo ID (WFLX). If your town is not on the list, your council may still be drafting a rule, and its agenda is the place to look. West Des Moines split e-bikes from e-motos by vehicle: pedal e-bikes under 750 watts on trails and most sidewalks, e-motos on streets and registered (KCCI).

Enforcement and safety drives

Police turned to enforcement and outreach. Bloomfield Township, Mich., police said they would enforce motorcycle rules on teen e-moto riders (WXYZ), and El Cerrito, Calif., began impounding illegal electric dirt bikes on the Ohlone Greenway (SFist).

Washington's police launched an e-bike and e-scooter safety push in busy areas through year-end, citing four e-bike-related deaths this year (FOX 5 DC). After the Severna Park death, Anne Arundel County police started Operation C.A.R.E. on e-bikes, e-motos, scooters and golf carts (CBS Baltimore).

Some departments put e-bikes to work. Phoenix firefighters added e-bikes to South Mountain rescues, aiming to cut response times (FOX 10). In New York, a safety group rallied in Central Park to demand a ban on e-vehicles in the park (ABC7 NY).

For families: if a teenager rides, the rule that binds them is usually local. October's new rules set ages from 14 to 16, fine or cite parents, or impound the machine, so read your town's code before the next ride.

October's crime and enforcement incidents, from thefts to riders fleeing officers, are listed here.

Research and data

The month's numbers point the same way: more e-bike injuries, and more of them in children. Truveta Research, a health-data company, found the e-bike emergency-visit rate rose from 1.2 per 100,000 people with an emergency visit in January to August 2023 to 10.1 in the same months of 2026, an increase of 760.2%, while the rate for traditional bicycles rose 7.9% (Truveta Research).

For riders under 18 the e-bike rate rose from 1.9 to 35.7, and if you are a parent, that is the figure for you to watch.

Hospitals reported the same climb. At Children's Hospital Los Angeles, pediatric e-bike and e-scooter injuries rose from 33 a year in 2019 to 124 in 2025, and e-bike injuries were the more severe (Newswise). Sunrise Trauma in Las Vegas treated 83 e-bike and e-scooter patients in September, its highest month of 2026 (FOX5 Vegas).

Local officials cited their own counts. Riverside County recorded 224 e-bike crashes in 2023, 494 in 2024 and 958 in 2025, Temecula said in launching a rider course (Patch).

Palm Beach County's Healthcare District has recorded 613 micromobility injuries since January 2023, 59% of them in children 12 to 15 (WFLX), and Modesto police counted 97 injury collisions involving these vehicles last year (KCRA). A AAA survey found two of three Florida adults had seen children riding e-bikes or e-scooters without a helmet (Islander News).

Industry

We logged 3 US business stories in October: a trade outlook, a going-concern warning and a count of closed shops. At PeopleForBikes' SHIFT'26 summit, sessions modeled trade scenarios through 2029 and reported 12 more states preparing e-moto bills modeled on California's SB 1167 (BRAIN). LiveWire, Harley-Davidson's electric motorcycle brand, disclosed substantial doubt about its ability to continue as a going concern (Electrek).

New Jersey's dealers put numbers on a law's cost to shops, covered in the New Jersey section above. If you are shopping for an e-bike, the checks stay the same: the class, the motor rating and the battery's certification. Product launches are not listed here: this record covers events and rules, and launches belong to our buying guides.

Around the world

Outside the US, October's e-bike news came from 8 countries and the European Union, and it rhymed with America's: young riders, fast machines and fires. If you travel with an e-bike, the rules below are not US rules, so check the local rule before you ride.

United Kingdom

A 17-year-old riding an e-bike was killed in Enfield, north London, on October 5, and the driver was arrested (Evening Standard).

Deliveroo said riders on illegal or too-fast e-bikes will be removed from its platform (Evening Standard), and London Fire Brigade's chief warned of a "very worrying" rise in e-bike and e-scooter fires (LBC). If you ride in the UK, the rules in our FAQ answer are the ones that apply to you.

University College London and Electrical Safety First published research on October 19 on how food-delivery riders charge and modify e-bikes, from a survey of 637 riders (Todo Mountain Bike). An inquest into a 2023 Cambridge fire that killed a mother and two children heard that the e-bike battery had been repaired (AOL (syndicated)).

In lighter news, Lime warned riders against staged "jousting" on its rental e-bikes in London Fields (VICE), and Pivot said its 12-bike UK e-bike demo fleet was stolen (Singletracks).

Netherlands, Belgium and France

If you visit Amsterdam, fatbikes stay barred from the Vondelpark: the city judged its ban, in force since May 11, a success and kept it (Het Parool). Antwerp's mayor called for number plates on souped-up electric scooters, and police said they had seized machines capable of more than 100 km/h (VRT NWS).

In Paris, shared e-bikes burned in cost-of-living protests, and Velib said about 5% of its 18,000 e-bikes were destroyed or damaged (AOL (syndicated)). Across the EU, Germany's industry groups ZIV and Zukunft Fahrrad had signed a European voluntary commitment against e-bike tuning on September 30, ride.ch reported (ride.ch).

Australia

Australia's Institute of Health and Welfare released national data on e-scooter and e-bike injuries on October 21, which its spokesperson called "the first national view on this topic" (AIHW release, via The National Tribune).

A University of Queensland study classed about half of Queensland's privately owned e-bikes, e-scooters and e-skateboards as illegal on their self-reported speed, power and throttle (Brisbane Times), and doctors in AMA Queensland called for a ban on riders under 16 (Brisbane Times). If you ride in Queensland, both reports are about the machines around you.

Ontario, China and Pakistan

In Ontario, Essex approved a motion to examine e-bike and e-scooter bylaws (CKNX) and Tecumseh moved to prepare one (CKNX), and a fire reportedly caused by an e-bike battery injured a man in Scarborough, Toronto (CityNews).

China approved a national safety standard for lithium-ion batteries in electric motorcycles and mopeds, effective July 1, 2027 (SMM). Pakistan's Punjab province drew more than 1.3 million registrations for a student e-bike scheme, where "e-bike" means an electric motorcycle or scooter (TechJuice).

Before you buy or ride: what October changes for you

If you have a teenager who rides, read your town's rule before your state's. October's local rules set ages at 14 to 16 depending on the place, and several fine the parent or impound the machine. Our kids and teens guide sets out which bikes fit which ages.

If a machine can go over 20 mph on its throttle, police in Eugene, Ore., call it an e-motorcycle "even if it has pedals," and e-motos there may only be ridden on private property or off-highway lands (KVAL). Colorado's attorney general warns sellers against labeling such a vehicle an e-bike. Check the class label and the motor rating before you buy.

If you charge at home, follow the FDNY's advice from the Bronx briefing: charge and store batteries outside where possible, never let them "block exits, doors or windows," never charge them while you sleep or are out of the room, and buy batteries certified by a safety laboratory such as UL (transcript). If you own an Urban Arrow cargo e-bike, stop riding it and claim the free seat post under recall 27004.

If you are shopping now, start with the ride: commuter and city e-bikes for streets and paths, folding e-bikes for trains and apartments, and cargo e-bikes for kids and groceries. Check the class against your town's rule before you buy.

If you ride in Connecticut, a 750-watt motor now fits the state's e-bike definition. If you ride in New Jersey, the license, registration and insurance rule still applies while S4830 is only a bill.

Why buy from Redtail

Redtail Ebikes is the trading name of the Florida corporation named in our terms of service, and every e-bike we sell ships free within the contiguous United States, except that Addmotor does not deliver its bikes to New York City addresses. Alaska, Hawaii, U.S. territories, P.O. boxes and remote areas "may incur additional charges or be excluded," so write to us before ordering (shipping policy).

Orders are dispatched within 1–3 business days, and most e-bikes arrive within 5–10 business days after dispatch. If a bike arrives damaged, send us photos within 48 hours of delivery and we file the freight claim; a bike that will not power on or charge "is covered under manufacturer warranty — we coordinate repair or replacement remotely" (refund policy).

Email support@redtailebikes.com, where we typically reply within one business day, or call +1 213-444-4020 and leave a voicemail. Our checkout takes major credit cards and Google Pay, and Shop Pay and Apple Pay are enabled on the store.

Frequently asked questions

Are e-bike accidents on the rise?

The records we read say yes. Truveta Research found the e-bike emergency-visit rate rose 760.2% from January to August 2023 to the same months of 2026 (Truveta Research), and Riverside County's e-bike crashes rose from 224 in 2023 to 958 in 2025. In October alone we found at least 22 US rider deaths and 30 rider-injury crashes in news reports and agency records; if you ride, the tables above show where they happened.

How dangerous are electric bikes?

In October's records, the danger came mostly from traffic: 16 of the 22 rider deaths involved a motor vehicle, 6 of them a pickup or a semi. Truveta Research found a traumatic brain injury in 5.8% of e-bike emergency visits against 5.6% for bicycles (Truveta Research).

Do electric bike batteries catch fire?

They can. Two October fires blamed on e-bike batteries killed 6 people in Philadelphia and the Bronx, and New York's fire commissioner counted 401 lithium-ion battery fires in the city so far in 2026 (transcript). D.C. will require batteries certified to UL 2271 or EN 50604 once its new act, not yet in force, takes effect. If you charge at home, the FDNY's advice is to do it outside where possible.

Is there a recall on electric bikes?

One October recall names an e-bike: CPSC recall 27004, about 1,032 Urban Arrow cargo e-bikes whose seat-post clamp bolt can break; owners get a free seat post and saddle (CPSC). If you own one, stop riding it until you have the new seat post. The recall's full record is on SaferProducts.gov.

Is the e-bike ban real?

We found no state or federal e-bike ban that took effect in October. The bans in October's news were local and narrow: Maine's MSAD 52 banned e-bikes from school property, Amsterdam kept its Vondelpark fatbike ban, and several cities barred e-motos from paths or sidewalks. New Jersey's license rule is a requirement, not a ban, and S4830 would remove it for low-speed e-bikes.

Do e-bikes need a license?

It depends on your state, and our law hub has yours. New Jersey requires license, registration and insurance, with a July compliance deadline (BRAIN), and S4830 would remove that for low-speed e-bikes. A machine without operable pedals is an e-moto in West Des Moines and must be registered to be street legal.

What is the new e-bike law?

October's new state rules are Connecticut's 750-watt definition (October 1), Florida's state forest rule (October 20) and D.C.'s certification act, signed October 16 and not yet in force while it awaits congressional review. North Carolina's law takes effect December 1, and California's and Illinois's January 1, 2027.

Will e-bikes be banned in Australia?

No national ban was proposed. Queensland doctors in AMA Queensland called for a ban on riders under 16 (Brisbane Times), and a University of Queensland study classed about half of the state's privately owned devices as illegal.

Are electric bikes illegal in the UK?

No, if the bike is an "electrically assisted pedal cycle": anyone 14 or over may ride one with no license, registration, tax or insurance, and a bike outside those rules "is classed as a motorcycle or moped" (GOV.UK). October's UK news was about the illegal kind: Deliveroo said it will remove riders on illegal or too-fast e-bikes (Evening Standard).

How we verified the records

Every row on this page traces to a report or a record we read in full, and the counting rules below decide what is in the totals.

Finding the news. We read the October sitemaps of 1,462 US news sites that publish them, plus the GDELT news index (439 US articles) and targeted searches, which gave 1,889 e-bike leads.

What we read. Of the 1,941 articles we attempted, we retrieved and read 1,469 in full; 92 sat on sites whose robots rules bar our reader and 229 refused the request, and we never used a reader proxy, a disguised browser or a bot-check workaround to get past a site that refused us.

Agency records. We read NYPD crash, vehicle and person records, the Cook County Medical Examiner's case archive, the Minnesota State Patrol's October crash reports (119 read, of which 2 involved an e-bike; 5 report numbers in the October range could not be opened), every Louisiana State Police release published October 1 to 30 (28, read on October 31, of which 1 involved an e-bike), and CPSC, Federal Register and Congress records.

Counting. A row counts when an agency record or a news report we read describes it; headline-only stories, law-firm pages and AI-written rewrites do not count. Deaths count by the day the person died; injuries count by crash. E-motos are counted with riders and labeled. Checked October 31, 2026.

Our datasets

Our counts come from two datasets we publish, our own count of what we read: the October incident ledger (CSV, JSON), one row per crash, fire or case with its grade and whether it is counted, and the story ledger (CSV, JSON). Our own fields name no victim; the reports they link to may.

Limitations

Nine limits apply to this record, each something the counts leave out or may get wrong.

  1. The totals are a floor. They hold only the deaths and injuries that reached a news report or an agency record we could read. NYPD's own data shows 86 riders injured in one city in under four weeks; the news we read reported 1 such crash.
  2. Many newsrooms were closed to us. Robots rules barred our reader from 92 articles, and 229 more refused the request; several TV station groups list only their last few days of stories in their sitemaps, so earlier October stories from those stations reached us only by other routes (search engines, the GDELT news index or another site's copy), and some may have been missed.
  3. One death is reported but not counted. A man was killed by a semi-truck in Escondido, Calif., on October 2. FOX 5 San Diego, citing the California Highway Patrol, calls him a bicyclist, and only a cycling blog, citing video, says he rode an e-bike, so he is not in the totals.
  4. One crash is left out as unclear. A 14-year-old died in Inglewood, Calif., on about October 4; the station's headline says "motorbike," and the only source we found that says e-bike is a law firm's page.
  5. E-scooter deaths are not counted. A 13-year-old died in an electric scooter crash in Greenfield, Calif., on October 19; this record covers e-bikes and e-motos.
  6. Headline-only reports stay out. Our dataset lists 4 incidents we saw only as headlines, and none is counted.
  7. October 31 is not here. The record stops on October 30, and NYPD's data stopped on October 27.
  8. Reports can change. A coroner can rule later, and a charge is not a conviction. Counts are as of October 31, 2026.
  9. This page ages with the calendar. It describes October 1 to 30, 2026. The NPS comment period closes November 2, Upper Arlington's and Buckeye's rules take effect November 4 and 6, and D.C.'s act takes effect after congressional review; each of those dates ages this page.
