How we verified this page
By Milad Ghobadibeygvand, BScN (Western University, 2014), writer and reviewer, Redtail eBikes. Verified October 2, 2026.
Every date, name and figure you read here comes from primary records read on October 2, 2026: Bafang's filings with the Shanghai Stock Exchange, its website, catalog and press releases, archived copies of its websites back to March 2005, the European Patent Register, a German court judgment, and US and UK government registers.
Unit totals are recomputed from the filings, every filing page number was found in the PDF by a script (the page list), and translations from Chinese are ours. Full method. If you find an error, write to support@redtailebikes.com.
For a Bafang conversion kit you will need another seller: we do not sell one, and none of the motors or parts we list on their own names Bafang. Some complete bikes we sell use Bafang motors; the shelf section counts them by brand.

Who makes Bafang motors?
Bafang motors are made by Bafang Electric (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. (八方电气(苏州)股份有限公司), whose shares have traded on the Shanghai Stock Exchange since November 11, 2019 (listing announcement, page 20). Its chairman and general manager, Wang Qinghua, held 40.60% of them at the end of 2025 (2025 annual report, page 45).
Bafang describes itself as "developing solutions for electric vehicles since 2003," with its "head office, development and manufacturing center" in Suzhou, near Shanghai (Bafang company page). Its 2025 annual report lists wholly owned companies in the Netherlands, Germany, Poland and the US, and two in Tianjin and Guangdong that make integrated wheel motors for China's own market (2025 annual report, pages 4 and 18).
It employed 1,005 people at the end of 2025: 589 at the parent company and 416 at its main subsidiaries (2025 annual report, page 28). Its US subsidiary, Bafang Science INC, was registered on March 30, 2017 at an address in Las Vegas, Nevada (prospectus, page 1-1-76).
The name is Chinese: Taiwan's Ministry of Education dictionary defines 八方 (bā fāng) as the eight directions, the four compass points and the four between them, "generally used to mean all directions" (Revised Mandarin Chinese Dictionary; our translation). Bafang has also used the brand 8FUN, which it holds as US trademark No. 5,698,562 for "Electric bicycles; hubs for bicycle wheels" (USPTO record).
Who makes the Bafang motor on your bike: Bafang Electric (Suzhou), a Shanghai-listed company whose chairman holds 40.60% of its shares. It has used the Bafang name since December 2003.
When was Bafang founded?
Bafang's prospectus dates the company to July 28, 2003, when a Suzhou firm named Suzhou Qijun Electric Motor Co., Ltd. (苏州市奇骏电机有限公司) received its business license, with 500,000 yuan (RMB) of capital paid in (prospectus, page 1-1-65). It took the Bafang name on December 15, 2003.
Its three founding shareholders were He Xianbing (50%), Cai Huiqi (30%) and Zeng Guangqing (20%), and its license covered the sale of motors, electrical products, machinery and battery-vehicle parts. In the prospectus's words, Qijun "did not develop a saleable product in the short term after it was set up" (prospectus, page 1-1-66).
He Xianbing then invited Wang Qinghua to join him in the business. Wang had just left Suzhou Xiaolingyang Electric Vehicle Co., where he was deputy general manager and ran its Changcheng vehicle-motor factory; He had been an R&D engineering supervisor at the same factory until April 2003 (prospectus, pages 1-1-66 and 1-1-243). Wang asked for a controlling stake.
The shareholders approved the handover on November 11, 2003. Cai and Zeng sold all of their shares and He sold part of his, so Wang paid 350,000 yuan in total for 70% of the company (prospectus, page 1-1-66). The transfer was registered on December 1, and the new name, 苏州市八方电机科技有限公司 (Suzhou Bafang Electric Motor Science and Technology), on December 15, 2003 (page 1-1-67).
Wang's biography in the same filing dates his arrival to September 2003, and Bafang's 2025 annual report calls him "one of the company's founders" (2025 annual report, page 22). He has run the company since, first as executive director and general manager and now as chairman and general manager.
A US record covers the same months. In the federal registration of its 8FUN trademark, Bafang declared first use of the mark on October 8, 2003 and first use in commerce on November 12, 2003 (USPTO record). Those dates are the owner's declaration, not a finding by the USPTO.
Founded, if you need one date: July 28, 2003, as Suzhou Qijun Electric Motor, and renamed Bafang on December 15, 2003. Three people incorporated it; Wang Qinghua took control in November and December 2003 and has led it since.
2004 to 2011: geared hub motors for China's electric bicycles
Bafang began with hub motors. Its website as the Internet Archive captured it on March 26, 2005 listed high-speed brushed planetary-geared disc motors, a low-speed motor, the 188SPY and 178SPY hub motors and, as its newest product, a high-speed brushless planetary-geared hub motor (2005 product list).
By April 30, 2005 that newest product had a name: the 129SWX-250, a brushless planetary-geared motor that the page said used three patented technologies, offered in 24-volt and 36-volt series for 16- to 26-inch wheels (April 2005 capture).

Pictures from Bafang's own website as the Internet Archive captured it in 2005, each placed at one uniform scale. The labels are the pages' own names, translated from Chinese by us.
The hub patent, 2003 to 2008
The hub design has a paper trail older than the website. On December 19, 2003, four days after the rename, He Xianbing filed a Chinese utility-model application, naming himself and Wang Qinghua as inventors, for an electric-bicycle hub whose motor has an inner stator and an outer rotor and drives the hub through planetary reduction gears and a clutch. It was published on January 12, 2005 as CN2670155Y (German Patent and Trade Mark Office record).
Bafang later called it the company's patent. A news item on its site, captured in May 2008, reported that on May 6, 2008, after a suit lasting three years, the Nanjing Intermediate People's Court upheld its "electric bicycle hub" patent, ZL200320123400.9, against a motor factory in Ningbo (2008 capture).
Factories, capital and an English catalog, 2005 to 2011
Its own news pages date the website to January 2005 (2006 capture) and record a ground-breaking for a 9,000-square-meter first-phase plant on January 21, 2006 (ground-breaking notice).
On April 28, 2007 Bafang moved to a new factory at No. 9 Heshun Road in Suzhou Industrial Park, on a 20-mu site, about 3.3 acres, with 8,500 square meters of floor space (2007 capture).
It stayed there until the third quarter of 2021, when the whole company moved to make way for a government subway project; its registered address has been No. 6 Dongyanli Road since February 15, 2022 (2021 report, page 7; 2025 report, pages 4 to 5).
In 2006 Bafang held a new-product launch on March 1 and its first training course for after-sales service points (launch notice; training notice). At a seminar its Tianjin agent ran for more than 40 e-bike makers, Wang Qinghua spoke as general manager and He Xianbing as chief engineer (seminar report).
The company's registered capital rose from 800,000 yuan in April 2005 to 20 million yuan that August (prospectus, pages 1-1-67 to 1-1-68). Yu Zhenhua, on staff since November 2003, became its third shareholder in June 2007, when the name dropped the character 市 to become 苏州八方电机科技有限公司 (page 1-1-68).
By September 2007 the English site listed a "Hercules Motor Series," a "16 Inch Broadsword Wheel Brushless Motor," a "Climbing King" series, and brushed and brushless "Spider Gear" hub motors (2007 capture).

Bafang's own photographs from its English website, as the Internet Archive captured them in August 2007. The labels shorten the pages' product names.
Bafang says it "started its business in the European market in 2004" (Bafang blog, Wrocław factory). A 2025 release quotes its senior R&D manager, Leo Wang, dating its work with France's postal service, La Poste, to 2008 (M430 release).
Bafang's registered software copyrights include a brushless motor controller program completed in October 2009 and first published in January 2010, and an LED dashboard program completed in February 2010. Controller firmware and an LCD display program for electric motorcycles were completed in early 2011 (prospectus, page 1-1-206).
The prospectus adds a company claim from these years. When President Obama first visited China, its government gave two electric bicycles as state gifts, and their drive systems came from Bafang (prospectus, page 1-1-129). The State Department dates that visit to November 15 to 18, 2009 (Office of the Historian).
If you own an older Bafang hub: an 8FUN mark or a name such as SWXK or BPM points to the 2011 to 2014 catalog, and the 2005 and 2007 names above cover the motors before it. You can look your motor's name up, with the years Bafang listed it, in the census dataset.
2012 to 2017: the BBS kit, the torque sensor and the patent case
Bafang's first mid-drive arrived in 2012. "In 2012, the company successfully developed its first-generation mid-drive BBS drive system," the prospectus says, followed by the upgraded BBS-02 and the BBS-HD, "with power reaching 1,000W" (prospectus, pages 1-1-133 to 1-1-134).
From 2014, by its own account, Bafang was the first company in China to bring out an inner-rotor hub motor, and its H600 weighed 1.7 kilograms (3.7 pounds). The same year it developed its own bottom-bracket torque and speed sensor and launched its second-generation mid-drive system, MAX (prospectus, page 1-1-134).
Bafang showed that second-generation mid-drive, a 350-watt geared motor, at Eurobike in August 2014 (2014 news). By Eurobike 2015 it offered four drive systems, MAX, BBS, Front and Rear (2015 news), and that July a Bafang team won a 24-hour e-bike race at the Nürburgring on the MAX system, by Bafang's account (2015 news).
In January 2016 Wang Qinghua told a Bafang seminar that the company put 5% of its annual revenue into research, employed forty R&D engineers and sold six ranges: MAX, BBS, FRONT, REAR, KICKBOARD and E-TRICYCLE (speech summary).
The BBS could convert an ordinary bicycle without a purpose-built frame, which the prospectus sets against the MAX system (page 1-1-206). It sized the US market at 250,000 to 300,000 units a year, "mainly high-power hub motors and the easily retrofitted BBS and BBS-HD mid-drives" (page 1-1-109).

The BBS kits as Bafang sells them now, under the model names it adopted later; its own photographs, each placed at one uniform scale.
Bafang registered a Dutch sales and service company on April 27, 2012 and its US subsidiary on March 30, 2017 (prospectus, pages 1-1-75 to 1-1-76); its blog dates a German office to 2016. The same blog post dates the Dutch company to 2011, a year before the registration in the prospectus (Bafang blog).
Sunstar v. Bafang: the patent case over the BBS
The BBS also drew Bafang into a patent case. Sunstar, a Japanese company, filed an international patent application on March 28, 2007 for an electric-assist unit that attaches to a bicycle frame, and the European Patent Office granted it as EP 2 143 628 on March 12, 2014 (European Patent Register).
In August 2014 Sunstar sued Bafang in Düsseldorf, alleging that its BBS01 mid-drive infringed the German part of that patent; the prospectus puts the damages at an estimated €500,000 (prospectus, page 1-1-371). The German trade site velobiz.de, reporting a Sunstar statement, gave the case number as 4a O 82/14 and said the claim was served on Bafang at that year's Eurobike show (velobiz.de, September 1, 2014).
Bafang answered at the patent office. It filed an opposition on November 7, 2014, and after oral proceedings on June 21, 2016 the European Patent Office kept the patent only in amended form. Sunstar appealed that decision as case T 1926/16 (European Patent Register).
On April 25, 2017 the Düsseldorf Regional Court ruled in case 4a O 82/14 (judgment, ECLI:DE:LGD:2017:0425.4A.O82.14.00). The published judgment is anonymized, and its patent, filed March 28, 2007 and published January 13, 2010, matches EP 2 143 628. The court ordered the defendant to stop the infringing acts and to pay compensation for acts from February 13, 2010 and damages from April 12, 2014.
The court set the penalty for breaching its order at a fine of up to €250,000 for each breach, or up to six months' imprisonment of the company's legal representatives and up to two years for a repeat, and made the order provisionally enforceable once the claimants posted €450,000 in security (judgment, operative part I and V; our translation).
Costs fell one-fifth on the claimants and four-fifths on the defendant. Bafang's prospectus dates this first-instance loss to March 2017; the court's own record says April 25, 2017.
The 2017 settlement: Bafang buys the patent
Bafang appealed in June 2017 and negotiated at the same time. Sunstar offered three ways out: sell the patents for US$3 million, license them non-exclusively for US$1 million plus 5% of each unit's price, or license them exclusively for US$1.5 million plus 5% (prospectus, page 1-1-371).
On December 28, 2017 the two sides settled. Bafang bought EP 2 143 628, two granted Chinese patents and one Chinese application outright for US$1.5 million, and Sunstar was to withdraw its suit (prospectus, page 1-1-371). The patent register shows Sunstar's appeal withdrawn on February 26, 2018, Bafang's opposition marked withdrawn, and Bafang Electric (Suzhou) recorded as owner in June 2018 (European Patent Register).
The prospectus calls the patent "the key structure of the BBS mid-drive" and says that after buying it Bafang held "exclusive rights in the European market" (pages 1-1-205 and 1-1-211). In Britain, the UK Intellectual Property Office lists the patent as "Not in force" from March 28, 2025, after a last renewal paid on March 22, 2024 (UK IPO record).
What the case means if you own a BBS today: Bafang has owned the patent since the 2017 deal, and the kit you know as the BBS is still on Bafang's website under new names: "M215 (BBS01), M315 (BBS02), M615 (BBSHD)," in Bafang's own words (Bafang blog).
2017 to 2022: a listing, a factory in Poland and a boom
Bafang became a joint-stock company on June 21, 2017, with registered capital of 81 million yuan (prospectus, page 1-1-61). In the second half of that year it launched Modest, a lower-priced mid-drive in the MAX series, aimed at bikes moving up from hub motors (pages 1-1-134 and 1-1-163).
Bafang Electric (Poland) was registered on July 23, 2018 (prospectus, page 1-1-76). It opened for business in September 2019 (2019 annual report, page 11) in what Bafang calls its first factory outside China, about 6,000 square meters in the Panattoni Park industrial zone near Wrocław (Bafang blog).
The shares listed that November. Bafang sold 30 million new shares at 43.44 yuan each, for gross proceeds of 1,303.2 million yuan, and trading began in Shanghai on November 11, 2019 (listing announcement, pages 20 and 27).
The 2020 to 2021 boom
Bafang's 2020 report says that after COVID-19 briefly held back travel, "safe and convenient" e-bikes won more buyers and the industry kept growing (2020 annual report, page 11). Its own unit sales climbed: mid-drives from 308,622 in 2019 to 553,330 in 2021, and hub motors from 682,138 to 1,573,991 (2019 report, page 13; 2021 report, page 12).
2021 also brought a new reporting line, integrated wheel motors for China's domestic electric bicycles, with 2,860,492 sold that year (2021 report, page 12).
Launches, 2020 to 2022
The launches came steadily. The M200 city mid-drive was announced on March 9, 2020 with 250 watts, 65 newton-meters of torque, nylon and steel gears and a weight of 3.2 kilograms, or 7.1 pounds (M200 release). On February 9, 2021 Bafang announced "China's First UL 2849 Certificate for Mid Motor" (UL release).
On August 2, 2021 it announced the H700, a 250-watt rear hub motor with a built-in automatic two-speed gearbox, for launch in the third quarter (H700 release). In 2022 it announced the M510 mountain-bike motor on March 18 (release), the M410, which it called an "all-round" mid-drive, on June 2 (release), a three-speed automatic gear hub on June 15 (release) and the 2.3-kilogram M820 on June 28 (release).
Bafang's list of the brands that fit its drive systems grew over the same years, and you can see every archived copy's count in the chart below. Its "eBike Brands" page named 28 brands in its first archived copy, November 24, 2020, 49 on September 29, 2022 and 70 on June 9, 2023 (our count of every copy).

Brands on Bafang's own page, counted in every archived copy. Since December 2023 the address has answered that the page does not exist.
If your bike was built in these years: Bafang's pages from 2017 on print three-digit code series such as MM G310, and the code guide shows you how to read the one on your motor.
2023 to 2026: the downturn, hubs that shift and a founder's exit
Sales fell in 2023. Bafang's report for that year cites continuing geopolitical conflict and inflation, a slow recovery in overseas demand and inventory that cleared more slowly than expected, and its mid-drive sales fell 51.45% to 247,830 (2023 annual report, pages 9 and 14). In 2024 they were 167,839 (2024 report, page 13).
On April 17, 2023 Bafang announced the H720, a two-speed automatic rear hub "focused on the North American market" and built to the dimensions of its fat-bike rear motors (H720 release). In 2024 it named its shifting technology GVT, for Gear Variable Transmission, and announced a five-speed automatic hub for high-powered fat-tire bikes, rated for up to 200 newton-meters (GVT release).
To compare Bafang's shifting hubs with other makers' gearbox motors, you can use our e-bike technology report, which sets those designs side by side.
The motorcycle sale and a founder's exit, 2024
In October 2024 Bafang sold its electric-motorcycle division's inventory, equipment, trademarks and patents for 28.14 million yuan after adjustment (2024 annual report, page 43). The buyer, Gaolepu Electric (Suzhou), is controlled by He Xianbing, one of the three founding shareholders, who had left Bafang's board and management that month (2024 report, page 25; 2025 report, page 38).
The division's T&D brand is now "a registered brand of Gaolepu Electric (Suzhou) Co., Ltd." (T&D, About Us). In February 2025 Bafang's Dutch subsidiary registered a new company, ARYV B.V., for e-bike drive systems (2025 annual report, page 12).
Launches and recovery, 2025 to 2026
At Eurobike in June 2025 Bafang unveiled the M430, a drive for cargo bikes carrying up to 300 kilograms in total, the H730, a hub motor with three automatic gears, and the M510RS (M430 release; Bafang blog). An Eovolt Afternoon Pro won one of the show's nine Gold Awards, in the E-Bikes category (Eurobike, June 25, 2025); Bafang says the bike uses its H700.
Bafang's net profit rose 61.04% in 2025 (2025 annual report, page 9). In the first half of 2026 revenue rose 33.81% and net profit 233.27%, which the company attributes to retail stock in Europe returning to normal levels and a partial recovery in demand (2026 half-year report, page 7).
At the China Cycle show in Shanghai in May 2026 it launched the RG E510, a five-speed electronic gear hub that shifts automatically or on command, and showed a coming H800 thru-axle road-bike hub motor that it says "weighs less than 1.4 kg" (Bafang blog).
Where Bafang stands in 2026: its 2025 mid-drive sales were less than a third of the 2021 peak, its hub-motor sales were growing again, and its newest launches include hubs that shift by themselves. Shopping now? The motors you will meet on new bikes are in the current lineup.
Bafang by the numbers
From 2016 through 2025 Bafang reported selling 2,887,636 mid-drive motors and 8,419,206 hub motors: 11.3 million motors in ten years, 11,306,842 exactly, by our sum of its filings (the yearly figures as a CSV file). From 2021 it also reported 14,465,047 integrated wheel motors for China's domestic electric bicycles, which that total leaves out.
| Year | Mid-drive motors sold | Hub motors sold | Integrated wheel motors sold | Filing |

Bafang's own filed unit sales. The integrated wheel motors it makes for China's domestic market are not drawn.
Both e-bike lines peaked in 2021. By 2024 mid-drive sales were 69.7% below that peak, and hub-motor sales rose 20.4% in 2025 (our arithmetic on the same filings). The 2016 figures leave out 15,308 motors for China's traditional electric bicycles, a business Bafang stopped in May 2016 (prospectus, page 1-1-144).
Mid-drives also became a smaller part of what Bafang sells. They were 31.5% of its mid-drive and hub sales in 2020 and 14.2% in 2025, by our arithmetic on the same filings (the yearly figures as a CSV file).

Our arithmetic on Bafang's filed unit sales; the integrated wheel motors it makes for China's domestic market are left out.
In 2025 Bafang's main business brought in 1,327.5 million yuan: 580.1 million from e-bike motors, 376.9 million from kits and 370.5 million from integrated wheel motors, at gross margins of 35.54%, 32.13% and 3.79% (2025 annual report, page 11). Kits are the controllers, displays, sensors, brake levers, throttles and wiring sold around its motors (prospectus, page 1-1-381).
Revenue booked in mainland China rose 12.74% that year, to 1,055.5 million yuan, while overseas revenue fell 34.70%, to 272.0 million, about a fifth of the total (2025 annual report, page 11). In 2018 Bafang estimated that it supplied 480,600 of the roughly 1.08 million hub motors sold into Europe, or 44.47% (prospectus, page 1-1-107).

Bafang's own figures from its 2025 annual report, page 11, drawn to one scale.
The numbers in one line: if you meet a Bafang motor on an e-bike, the filings make a hub the likelier kind, since 8.4 of the 11.3 million sold from 2016 to 2025 were hubs. Bafang's e-bike motor sales peaked in 2021, its 2025 mid-drive sales were less than a third of that peak, and about four-fifths of its 2025 sales revenue was booked in mainland China.
What Bafang sells now: the 2027 lineup
Bafang's 2027 workbook for bike makers lists 7 mid-drive motors, 11 hub motors (one front, ten rear) and 3 gear hubs (Bafang Workbook 2027, pages 10–15). Its website adds the three BBS-line conversion kits, RS versions of two mountain-bike motors and one more hub, the H710 (Bafang mid-drive motors). To match a motor to your riding, start from Bafang's use column; the which-motor table groups them for you.
| Mid-drive | Bafang's use | Rated power | Max. torque | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| M210 | city, touring | 250 W | 80 N·m | 3.2 kg (7.1 lb) |
| M410 | touring | 250 W | 95 N·m | 3.3 kg (7.3 lb) |
| M430 | cargo, speed | 250 or 750 W | 120 or 150 N·m | 4.0 kg (8.8 lb) |
| M510 | mountain | 250 W | 110 N·m | 2.9 kg (6.4 lb) |

| M820 | road, gravel, mountain | 250 W | 80 N·m | 2.3 kg (5.1 lb) |
| M215 (BBS01) | conversion kit, city, touring | 250 W | 80 N·m | 3.8 kg (8.4 lb) |
| M315 (BBS02) | conversion kit, touring, trikes | 500 W | 100 N·m | 4.3 kg (9.5 lb) |
| M615 (BBSHD) | conversion kit, cargo, speed | 750 or 1,000 W | 160 N·m | 5.6 kg (12.3 lb) |
| M510RS | mountain | 250 W | 120 N·m | 2.9 kg (6.4 lb) |
| M560RS | mountain | 250 W | 150 N·m | 3.3 kg (7.3 lb) |
Figures are Bafang's, from the workbook for the first seven and from its own motor pages for the last five, read October 2, 2026; Bafang's code pages list cadence sensing for the three kits (M615 code page), so if you want torque sensing, the BBS line does not offer it. The RS torque figures are "Boost-to-Limit" figures; Bafang lists 110 and 120 newton-meters as their normal peaks.

Bafang's photographs, each placed at one uniform scale with nothing drawn on it; the labels sit below them.
| Hub motor | Bafang's use | Rated power | Max. torque | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| H400 (front) | city | 250 W | 50 N·m | 2.4 kg (5.3 lb) |
| H305 | city, touring | 250 W | 55 N·m | 3.1 kg (6.8 lb) |
| H405 | city, touring | 250 or 500 W | 55 or 60 N·m | 3.7 kg (8.2 lb) |
| H410 | city | 250 W | 45 N·m | 2.3 to 2.5 kg (5.1 to 5.5 lb) |
| H550 | fat-tire, cargo | 250 to 1,000 W | 60 to 100 N·m | 4.2 to 4.9 kg (9.3 to 10.8 lb) |
| H550W (built into the wheel) | fat-tire, cargo | 750 or 1,000 W | 85 or 100 N·m | 8.0 kg (17.6 lb) |
| H560 | city | 500 or 750 W | 75 or 85 N·m | 4.2 kg (9.3 lb) |
| H650 | off-road | 2,000 or 3,000 W | 160 or 200 N·m | 9.5 kg (20.9 lb) |
| H700 (2 automatic gears) | city | 250 W | 50 N·m | 3.2 kg (7.1 lb) |
| H710 (2 automatic gears) | city | 250 or 350 W | 55 or 60 N·m | 4.1 kg (9.0 lb) |
| H720 (2 automatic gears) | fat-tire | 250, 750 or 1,000 W | 60, 85 or 100 N·m | 4.8 to 5.4 kg (10.6 to 11.9 lb) |
| H730 (3 automatic gears) | city | 250 W | 50 N·m | 3.6 kg (7.9 lb) |
The H710 figures come from Bafang's page for its code, RM G02A2.250/350.D, because its consumer page carried no figures when we read it (H710 page). For the H650, the workbook lists 2,000 or 3,000 watts rated at 60 or 72 volts, while its own page lists 3,000 watts rated and "3000W (60V) or 4500W (72V) peak output" (H650 page). If you are comparing H650 bikes, ask which figure the seller means.

Bafang's photographs, at one uniform scale and unaltered; three carry Bafang's own GVT logo.
The three gear hubs carry no motor. The RG A310.D shifts three gears by itself and takes up to 100 newton-meters, the RG A510.D shifts five for fat-tire bikes and takes up to 200, and the new RG E510.D shifts five electronically, automatically or on command, up to 120 (workbook, page 15).
Every motor torque figure in the workbook carries a footnote calling it a "peak locked parameter, reconfiguration possible," and warning that "higher performance values can lead to increased wear" (workbook, pages 10–14). The figures on the bike you buy can therefore differ from the table, so your bike's own listing is the place to check them.
Every Bafang motor, 2005 to 2026
Our census of Bafang's own records finds 214 distinct motor codes on its product pages, workbook and code pages from 2014 to 2026, in 95 code families, plus 27 model names on its 2005 to 2014 websites and 33 more names in its filings, releases, blog and workbook, 4 of them gear hubs rather than motors. You can search the full list, with the first and last date each was seen, in the published dataset.
Bafang's codes changed form twice on its own pages. Its 2014 to 2016 site used two-digit series such as MM G31 (59 codes in 24 families); from 2017 its pages used three-digit series such as MM G310 (121 codes in 50 families); and four-character series such as MM G2300 and RM G06A2 appear from 2022 (33 codes in 20 families).
One more code fits none of the three: UM DGB1.5000.D, the "unilateral" motor Bafang showed among its motors for China's domestic market in 2021. These are our counts of what the archive holds, so each is a floor.

Each pairing in the table is printed on one Bafang page. The dates are the first and last archived copy of any code in the family, or Bafang's live site and workbook as we read them on October 2, 2026; they are not launch or end-of-sale dates.
A name printed on two codes is the same name over time; this table does not say the motors are the same, so if your motor shares a name with one here, check your code too.
Before the codes, Bafang named its motors. Its 2011 to 2014 site, which it signed "8FUN Motor," listed these e-bike hub motors with their specifications:
| Model | Voltage | Rated power | Weight | Water grade |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SWXU | 24 or 36 V | 180 to 220 W | up to 1.9 kg | IP54 |
| SWXK | 24 or 36 V | 180 to 250 W | up to 3.0 kg | IP54 |
| SWXK5 | 24 or 36 V | 180 to 250 W | up to 3.0 kg | IP54 |
| SWXB | 24 or 36 V | 180 to 250 W | up to 3.3 kg | IP54 |
| SWXH | 24 or 36 V | 180 to 250 W | up to 3.1 kg | IP54 |
| SWXP | 24 or 36 V | 180 to 240 W | up to 3.1 kg | IP54 |
| SWX01 | 24 or 36 V | 180 to 250 W | up to 3.3 kg | IP54 |
| BPM | 36 or 48 V | 250 to 500 W | up to 4.5 kg | IP54 |
| BPMII | 36 or 48 V | 250 to 500 W | up to 4.5 kg | IP54 |
| EF-R (roller brake) | 24 or 36 V | 180 to 250 W | up to 1.8 kg | IP54 |
| CST (cassette freewheel) | 24 or 36 V | 250 to 500 W | up to 4.5 kg | IP54 |
Five of those pages, SWXU, SWXK5, SWXB, SWX01 and EF-R, head their power column "KW" over figures between 180 and 250, the range the SWXK and SWXH pages print under "W"; we print them all as watts, our reading. The same site sold e-motorcycle motors (DM05, DM06, HSPT, CGDJ) and motors for golf cars and lawn mowers (MSD, GCQD), listed in the concepts table.

Bafang's own photographs from its 2011 to 2014 website, as the Internet Archive holds them. The 8FUN mark shows on several of the housings.
Which Bafang motor do I have? Reading the code
Look for the laser mark on your motor's housing, and keep it legible. Bafang's user manuals show the model code laser-marked there beside a QR-code label, and warn that if the mark or label is erased, polished or stained, "no after-sales service will be provided" (M210 user manual, § 6.2.1). Then read your code from left to right.
| Part of the code | Example: MM G510.1000.C | What it matched on Bafang's own pages |
|---|---|---|
| First two letters | MM | Mid motor; RM is a rear hub and FM a front hub: 248 of 253 pages that state both |
| Letter after the space | G | Gear drive; D is direct drive: 267 of 267 pages that state both |
| Series number | 510 | The motor family; the 2027 workbook prints M620 above MM G510.1000.C |
| Number after the dot | 1000 | Rated power in watts: 268 of 290 pages that state both |
| Final letters on a hub | .D, .V, .DC or .R | The brake fitting: D or DC disc, V rim brake, R roller brake: 229 of 229 pages that state both |
These are patterns in Bafang's pages, measured by us, not a key Bafang publishes; Bafang's pages do not explain the ".C" that ends its current mid-drive codes. If your code breaks a pattern, the figures on its own code page are the ones to trust. The page-by-page reading is published with this page.
When you know your motor's model name, this table gives you the code Bafang prints for it in its workbook and on its code pages:
| Model | Bafang's code |
|---|---|
| M210 | MM G2300.250.C |
| M410 | MM G333.250.C |
| M510 | MM G522.250.C |

| M620 | MM G510.1000.C |
| M820 | MM G532.250.C |
| M215 (BBS01) | MM G340.250.C |
| M315 (BBS02) | MM G340.500.C |
| M615 (BBSHD) | MM G320.750/1000.C |

| H405 | RM G0210.250.D/DC and .500 |
| H410 | RM G3310.250.D/DC |
| H550 | RM G0630.1000.D/DC |
| H560 | RM G0270.500.D/DC and .750 |

| H710 | RM G02A2.250/350.D |
| H720 | RM G06A2.250.D, .750 and .1000 |
The M430, H650 and H730 carry their model names in place of a code in the workbook (workbook, pages 10–14). If your motor carries an older name, you will find it and its code in the census table above.
Do Bafang motors have torque sensors?
If your bike has a current Bafang mid-drive, it does, with three exceptions. Every mid-drive in its 2027 workbook, from the M210 to the M820, lists "Torque & Cadence" as its pedal sensor (workbook, pages 10–11). The exceptions are the BBS-line kits: Bafang's code pages list a cadence sensor for the M215, M315 and M615, the BBSHD (M615 code page).
The difference matters for how your bike feels. Bafang's prospectus describes a torque sensor as one that "senses torque and converts it into a usable output signal," the core of how the system "understands the rider's intent," while a speed sensor at the crank or wheel only collects riding-state information for the controller (prospectus, page 1-1-132). Bafang dates its own bottom-bracket torque sensor to 2014 (page 1-1-134).
You can compare how the two kinds of sensor feel on the road in our motor guide's sensor comparison.
Hub motors are different. The workbook's hub-motor tables list no pedal sensor; its sensor pages sell bottom-bracket sensors separately, in torque-and-cadence and cadence-only types (workbook, page 20). So if you ride a Bafang hub bike, whether it senses torque depends on which sensor its maker fitted, and your bike's own listing is where to look.
For trail riding, the newest step you will see is the RS pair. Bafang says the M510RS and M560RS use a six-axis motion sensor that "fuses torque, cadence, and wheel speed in real time" (M510RS page). Bafang also calls itself one of the few companies in the world with core torque-sensor technology, a claim made in its 2025 annual report (page 10).
Torque sensors in one line: a current Bafang mid-drive has one, a BBS-line kit does not, and your Bafang hub bike has one only if its maker fitted a torque sensor at the crank.
Which Bafang motor is best, and for what?
Bafang does not rank its motors; it assigns each one a use, and that use is the first thing to match to your riding. In its 2027 workbook the mountain-bike motors are the M510, the M560 and the M820, which is also listed for road and gravel bikes; the cargo and fat-tire motors are the M430, M620, H550, H550W and H720; and the city motors are the M210, H400, H305, H405, H410, H560, H700 and H730.
| If you ride | Bafang's motors for it | What separates them |
|---|---|---|
| Steep trails | M510, M560, their RS versions, M820 | 80 to 150 N·m; the M820 is the lightest, at 2.3 kg |
| Heavy loads, cargo, fat tires | M620, M430, H550, H550W, H720 | the M620's 170 N·m and 1,000 W; the hubs' 1,000 W versions |
| City and commuting | M210, H400, H305, H405, H410, H560, H700, H730 | the H700 and H730 change gears by themselves |
| Road and gravel | M820 | 2.3 kg, the lightest mid-drive in the workbook |
| Converting a bike you own | M215, M315, M615 | 250, 500 or 750 to 1,000 W; cadence sensing |

Bafang's figures, largest version of each motor. Bafang calls each torque figure a peak setting that can be reconfigured.
The fastest settings in the workbook belong to the H650, at 60 or 80 kilometers per hour (37 or 50 mph), which Bafang labels for off-road use. Among its other motors, the highest settings listed are 45 kilometers per hour, about 28 mph, on the M430, M560, M620, H550, H550W, H560 and H720, and a setting written as "45+" on the H550, H550W and H720 (workbook, pages 10–14); Bafang's code page adds 45 for the M615.
The most powerful motor in the lineup is also the H650: 3,000 watts rated in its 72-volt version and 200 newton-meters of torque. Among mid-drives, the M620 has the most torque, 170 newton-meters, and shares the top rated power, 1,000 watts, with the M615.
If you are going from a motor to a bike, our hub-drive e-bike guide matches hub bikes to riders and terrain, and our electric mountain bike guide starts from the trails each e-bike class may legally ride. Our fat-tire guide sorts fat-tire bikes by need, from sand and snow to hunting and the heaviest loads.
If you are starting from scratch, our buying guide takes the decisions in order: how you ride, the legal class, the budget, then the motor, battery, brakes and fit.
Choosing between a mid-drive and a hub for your next bike? Our motor comparison sets the two designs side by side on hills, maintenance and price, using the same kind of published figures as this page.
Compare mid-drive and hub motorsAre Bafang motors legal in the US?
No US law approves or bans the brand of motor on your bike. Federal law defines a "low-speed electric bicycle" by its motor and its speed: "an electric motor of less than 750 watts (1 h.p.)," and a top speed on motor power alone, with a 170-pound rider on a paved level surface, "less than 20 mph" (15 U.S.C. § 2085(b); Public Law 107-319).
That definition makes such bikes consumer products under the Consumer Product Safety Act. Where you may ride a given bike is set by your state and city, and our state-by-state law table quotes each state's own wording.
Bafang's lineup sits on both sides of the federal line, so the motor on your bike may sit on either side. Its workbook lists rated power from 250 to 3,000 watts, and the federal text says "less than 750 watts" without saying whether that means rated or peak output (workbook, pages 10–14).
The speed your motor delivers is a setting: the workbook's settings include 25, 32 and 45 kilometers per hour, which are 15.5, 19.9 and 28.0 mph.
Our 750-watt guide goes further into that line: what a 750-watt rating on a spec sheet does and does not tell you, and where the line is enforced.
Bafang says its H650 is "compatible with US Class 1/2/3 e-bike classifications, plus an unrestricted off-road mode" (H650 page). Which mode your bike ships in, and where you ride it, are what the law looks at. Check the class printed on your bike's label and listing against your state's row in the law table.
The law in one line: the motor brand is not the legal question; your bike's power, its top assisted speed and your state's class rules are.
Are Bafang motors reliable? What the record shows
The public record on Bafang's reliability, which you can check yourself, is short and specific: one US safety recall carries its name, and Bafang's own documents give one durability figure and one warning about wear. Searching all 10,027 recall records the US Consumer Product Safety Commission published from June 8, 1973 to September 24, 2026, we found Bafang named in one and its 8FUN brand in none (our search).
That recall, number 18-200 of August 2, 2018, covered about 3,350 motor-controller circuit boards that Clean Republic of Seattle sold with its Hill Topper conversion kits, because "water can enter the motor controller and cause it to accelerate on its own." The firm had six reports of riders losing control and one injury, scrapes and bruises; owners were told to stop using the boards and get a free replacement (CPSC recall record).
If you have a Hill Topper kit, look at the front of its motor control unit: the recalled boards carry model numbers KT24WSH-BF08 and KT36WSH-BFZ13504.
The CPSC's two copies of that recall now disagree about who made the boards. Its recall database lists "Bafang Electric (Suzhou) Co. Ltd., China." as the manufacturer, while its recall page names "Suzhou Kunteng Electronics Co., LTD." (CPSC recall page). Archived copies show the page naming Bafang on August 28, 2018 and Kunteng by March 21, 2019 (August 28, 2018 copy; March 21, 2019 copy). We print both, as the agency does.
Durability and water ratings
Bafang's own documents give one durability figure and one caution. Its prospectus says its custom clutch lasts up to 600,000 cycles, "far above the industry average" (prospectus, page 1-1-134); its 2027 workbook warns that higher power settings "can lead to increased wear" (workbook, page 10). Both are the maker's statements, not independent test results.
For water, the workbook rates its current motors IP X6, except the M620 at IP X5, and Bafang's code page gives the BBSHD (M615) IP X5 (workbook, pages 10–14; M615 code page).
In the IP code of the international standard IEC 60529, the second numeral grades an enclosure's protection against liquids on a scale from 0, no protection, to 9, "high-pressure hot water from different angles" (IEC, archived copy), so the second numeral on your motor tells you which kind of water exposure it was rated for.
The record in one line: one US recall, for a 2018 controller board, carries Bafang's name in the CPSC's database, and the CPSC's page for the same recall now names another maker. If you own a Hill Topper kit, check your board's model number.
Concepts, prototypes and motors beyond e-bikes
Bafang has shown more than you can buy from its e-bike catalog. Its records name concept systems it "proposed," motors announced and not yet in its workbook, motors for vehicles other than e-bikes, and an electric-motorcycle brand it built and then sold.

When you read about an H800, check which one is meant: the name has been used twice, and the 2019 prospectus lists an H800 hub of 500 watts and 4.4 kilograms (page 1-1-92), unlike the 2026 road hub.
Bafang's milestones, checked against the record
If you read Bafang's own account of its history, most of it holds up. Where its documents and an outside record differ, the table prints both so you can weigh them; the differences are dates and percentages, and none changes the history above.

When you compare a motor's launch figures with today's workbook, some have moved. The H700 was announced at 32 newton-meters and appears in the 2027 workbook at 50; the M820 went from 75 to 80, the M410 from 80 to 95 and the M510 from 95 to 110 (releases above; workbook, pages 10–14). We print both numbers with their dates; neither is wrong for its date.
Bafang motors on our shelf
Of the 212 e-bikes and e-trikes you will find listed in our store, twelve name a Bafang motor, read October 2, 2026 (listing by listing): 7 of 27 Eunorau listings, 2 of 5 DWMEIGI, and 1 each of 28 Addmotor, 10 Freesky and 22 Himiway listings. One listing could not be read and is not counted.
The 212 are the pedal bicycles and tricycles among our 223 active listings; the other 11, scooters, dirt bikes and mini motorbikes ridden on footpegs, a balance bike and an accessories kit, name no Bafang motor.
By the motor each listing names, three name the M620 and one its code, G510; three name a 1,000-watt Bafang mid-drive without a model; two a 750-watt Bafang hub; one the M615; one the M600; and one a Bafang hub with a 4,000-watt peak.
A listing that does not name Bafang may still use a Bafang motor, so twelve is a floor, not a full count, and you can ask us which motor any listing uses.
Eunorau, the brand with the most, was on Bafang's own list of e-bike brands in all 14 archived copies from January 11, 2021 to June 9, 2023 (Bafang's list, June 9, 2023). Our Eunorau brand profile lists that lineup by price and category, and our Addmotor brand profile sets out Addmotor's lineup specification by specification.
Every bike we have reviewed is indexed in our e-bike reviews, each set against the federal e-bike line, and our brand guide matches each brand we carry to the riding it suits.
Want a Bafang-driven bike of your own? The twelve listings counted above are all in our full collection, and we deliver free to your address anywhere in the contiguous US.

Where are Bafang motors made?
If your bike has a Bafang motor, it was made in China or Poland. Bafang's head office, development and manufacturing center is in Suzhou, near Shanghai (company page). Its Polish subsidiary near Wrocław makes e-bike motors, and two subsidiaries in Tianjin and Guangdong make integrated wheel motors for China's domestic electric bicycles (2025 annual report, page 18). Your motor's label and your bike's listing are where you can check which model you have.
Is Bafang a Chinese or a Taiwanese company?
Chinese. Bafang Electric (Suzhou) is registered in Suzhou Industrial Park, in mainland China, and its shares trade in Shanghai (2025 annual report, page 4). If you have seen Bafang tied to Taiwan, that is its office in Taichung, opened in April 2020 to serve the bike makers there (release, April 7, 2020).
What does Bafang mean?
八方 (bā fāng) names the eight directions and, in the Ministry of Education dictionary's words, is "generally used to mean all directions" (dictionary entry; our translation). The company has carried the name since December 15, 2003, when Suzhou Qijun Electric Motor was renamed. You may also see its 8FUN mark on older hubs; the photographs from its 2011 to 2014 catalog above show it on several housings.
Does Bafang make hub motors, and are they geared?
Yes; hubs are most of what it sells. Of the 11.3 million e-bike motors Bafang reported selling from 2016 through 2025, 8.4 million were hub motors.
Bafang's own pages say nearly all of its hubs are geared. Of the 111 hub-motor codes whose page states how the motor drives the wheel, 107 say gear drive. The other 4 say direct drive: two rear motors for 48- to 72-volt systems with drum brakes, archived in 2014, and two 250-watt motors for 6- and 8-inch wheels, the smaller of which Bafang described as suited to scooters and folding bikes (our census).
To tell which kind your bike has, see our motor guide on geared and direct-drive hubs.
Are Bafang motors waterproof?
They carry a water rating you can look up. Bafang says it builds its motors, gear hubs and displays to IP X6 (2023 release), and its 2027 workbook lists IP X6 for every current motor except the M620, at IP X5.
If you ride a BBSHD, Bafang's page for it, the M615, lists IP X5 (M615 code page). The second numeral of an IP code grades protection against liquids from 0 to 9 (IEC), so check what your bike's own listing promises before you ride through deep water.
How long do Bafang motors last?
Bafang gives no service life for a whole motor in the workbook, motor pages, filings and releases we read. It does give two related figures you can weigh: a clutch life of up to 600,000 cycles in its 2019 prospectus, and a warning that higher power settings "can lead to increased wear" (prospectus, page 1-1-134; workbook, page 10). If you are buying a bike, ask the seller what its warranty covers and for how long.
What is the fastest Bafang motor?
The H650 rear hub, which Bafang labels for off-road use and lists at 60 or 80 kilometers per hour, about 37 or 50 mph. No other motor in its 2027 workbook lists a setting above 45 km/h, though three hubs list one written "45+" (workbook, pages 10–14). If you are shopping for speed, read the class on the bike's label first; the law section explains why.
How fast does a 1,000-watt Bafang motor go?
As fast as your bike's controller is set to allow. Bafang lists its 1,000-watt motors with a 45 km/h setting, about 28 mph, and some 1,000-watt hubs with "45+"; the M615 kit is also listed at 25 and 32 km/h (workbook, pages 11–14; M615 code page).
The federal "low-speed electric bicycle" goes "less than 20 mph" on motor power alone (15 U.S.C. § 2085(b)). If your bike's motor is rated at 1,000 watts, it is above that definition's "less than 750 watts" whether the limit is read as rated or peak power, and your state's rules decide where you may ride it.
Will a Bafang mid-drive fit my bike?
Bafang sells the BBS-line kits to convert bikes you already own, and its other mid-drives to bike makers through its OEM workbook. Measure your bike's bottom-bracket shell before you order: Bafang lists the M215 and M315 for a 68 mm bottom bracket and the M615 for 68 to 120 mm (M215 page; M315 page; M615 page). Its prospectus contrasts the BBS, which needs no special frame, with the MAX system (page 1-1-206).
What is the Bafang BBSHD?
It is the heavy-duty version of Bafang's BBS conversion kit, sold today as the M615: 750 or 1,000 watts, 160 newton-meters, 5.6 kilograms and a cadence sensor, for bottom brackets 68 to 120 mm wide (M615 page).
If you are choosing between it and the M315, the difference is power and torque: the M315 is rated at 500 watts and 100 newton-meters (M315 page). Bafang's prospectus lists the BBS-HD among the upgrades that followed the 2012 BBS (page 1-1-134).
Does the BBSHD have a torque sensor?
No. Bafang's page for the M615 lists a cadence sensor, so if you ride a BBSHD, your assist is cadence-sensed; its newer mid-drives sense torque as well as cadence (M615 code page).
Does Bafang make batteries?
Yes. Bafang set up a subsidiary in March 2021 to design, make and test lithium battery packs, and its workbook sells batteries beside its motors (2021 annual report, page 7; workbook, page 18). In the first half of 2026 it reported that the battery line had turned a profit (2026 half-year report, page 7). If you are comparing battery chemistries, see our e-bike battery guide.
Are Bafang motors as good as Bosch?
If you are weighing a Bafang-powered bike against a Bosch-powered one, Bafang's prospectus describes the difference as one of price and business model. Its prices are generally lower than those of Bosch, Shimano and Yamaha, it said, because of brand factors, and higher than Chinese rivals'; and unlike those three, which in Bafang's description sell complete systems with batteries, it also sells motors, controllers and other parts separately (prospectus, page 1-1-126).
For your own ride, compare the torque, the sensor and the service network of the two bikes you are choosing between.
What e-bikes use Bafang motors?
Bafang's own website named the brands. Its "eBike Brands" page listed 28 in its first archived copy, November 24, 2020 (archived copy), and 70 in its last, June 9, 2023, among them Aventon, Eunorau, Juiced Bikes, Pedego Electric Bikes and Sondors (archived copy).
It did not say which models, so if you are looking at a brand from that list, check the motor on the model's own listing; since December 2023 the address has answered "The page you visited does not exist" (archived copy, December 7, 2023).
Bafang's H730 release says more than 40 brands had adopted its automatic-shifting technology alone (H730 release). In our store, 12 listings from five brands name a Bafang motor; the shelf section counts them by brand and by motor. For the wider market, our list of e-bike brands sold in the US gives the record that puts each brand there.
How we verified this page, in detail
Every date, name and figure about Bafang on this page was read in a saved copy of its source on October 2, 2026, and every computed figure is recomputed by a script from the numbers its source prints.
- The sources. 97 sources are cited: 13 official records (US, UK, German and European patent, trademark and court records, the US Code and a public law, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the State Department and Taiwan's Ministry of Education), 82 publications by Bafang and by organizations writing about their own awards or brands, 1 explainer by a standards body, and 1 trade-press report, used only beside a court record. The ledger behind this page holds 140 claims, 31 of them load-bearing, each with a second retrieval or a stated single publisher.
- The archive. 92 of the 97 sources carry a public archived copy, and every source is saved as a local research deposit.
- The filings. Bafang's prospectus, listing announcement, annual reports for 2019 to 2025 and its 2026 half-year report were downloaded from CNINFO, the Shanghai Stock Exchange's disclosure platform, and read in Chinese. Every page number on this page was computed from the PDF by a script, never typed.
- Bafang's archived websites. We read 641 archived product and code pages of szbaf.com and bafang-e.com, 411 of them with a specification table, 128 product pages from its 2005 to 2014 sites, 93 news pages, 28 copies of its e-bike brands page and the 17 catalog pictures shown above, all as the Internet Archive captured them. Capture dates are "no later than" dates for a page, never launch or end dates.
- The motor census. Every motor code and model name in Bafang's own records was listed: the archived pages above, its 2027 workbook, its product pages as we read them on October 2, 2026, and its filings, releases and blog. A code counts once however many pages print it, after spacing and case are normalized; a name counts only where Bafang printed it as a model designation, so 26 product descriptions without one are left out. Every row of the published census carries its sources.
- The code patterns. On every archived code page that prints the code beside a position, construction, rated power or brake, we compared the code's letters with the printed field: MM, RM and FM with mid, rear and front; G and D with gear and direct drive; the number after the first dot with the rated power, which must print no other figure; and a closing D, DC, V or R with a disc, rim or roller brake. A page that prints "front / rear" counts against its code.
- The unit totals are our sums of the figures Bafang filed for each year; the integrated wheel motors it makes for China's domestic electric bicycles are counted separately and left out of the e-bike total.
- The shelf count. The motor lines of all 223 active listings in our bike catalog were read from our own product descriptions on October 2, 2026, matching "Bafang" on word boundaries, and every match was read by hand. The count is of the 212 pedal bicycles and tricycles; the other 11 listings are scooters, dirt bikes and mini motorbikes ridden on footpegs, a balance bike and an accessories kit.
- The recall search. All 10,027 recall records in the CPSC's database, June 8, 1973 to September 24, 2026, were searched in every field for "Bafang" and "8FUN" on word boundaries, with a control term ("e-bike") that matched 21 records, so an empty result would have been caught.
- The questions. The questions this page answers come from 9,820 search suggestions, People Also Ask boxes, related searches, Reddit threads and ranking-page headings gathered from nine sources on October 2, 2026, and from an 11-prompt panel run on one AI search engine.

Limitations
This page could not settle the items below. Each names the event that would settle it, so you know when a fact here may change.
- The census is only as complete as the Internet Archive's copies of Bafang's websites. A motor Bafang sold without an archived product page, catalog or filing entry is missing from it, so its count is a floor. Re-run when Bafang publishes a model history or new captures appear.
- First and last capture dates bound a page; they do not date a launch or an end of sale, so read them as bounds, not as your motor's launch date. A property of the method.
- Every motor figure is Bafang's, and its workbook calls each torque figure a "peak locked parameter, reconfiguration possible." Launch figures and 2027 figures differ for the H700, M410, M510 and M820, and both are shown with their dates. Re-read at Bafang's next workbook.
- Two of Bafang's documents give the H650 different rated power: 2,000 or 3,000 watts in the workbook, 3,000 watts on its page. Both are shown, so ask your seller which applies to your bike. Expires if Bafang aligns them.
- The CPSC's two records of recall 18-200 name different manufacturers. Both are printed. Expires if the CPSC corrects either.
- The Düsseldorf judgment is published without party names. Its tie to Bafang rests on the case number reported by velobiz.de, on the patent's filing and publication dates, and on Bafang's prospectus. The patent's lapse is confirmed only for the UK. Expires as each national register is read.
- "The industry's first external rotor hub motor" is Bafang's claim. The utility model CN2670155Y shows a December 19, 2003 filing for such a hub; whether it was the first anywhere would take a worldwide prior-art search. Expires with that search.
- Several statements are Bafang's alone, and no second record of them was located: the first UL 2849 mid-drive certificate in China (2021), the first inner-rotor hub motor in China (2014), its 2018 share of Europe's hub motors, the drive systems in the 2009 state gift, the 2015 Nürburgring win and the count of brands using GVT. Expires with an independent record of any.
- No independent lifespan data for Bafang motors was found. Bafang gives no whole-motor service life in the workbook, motor pages, manual, filings or releases read; its prospectus gives a clutch life of up to 600,000 cycles. If you need a service life for a bike you are buying, its warranty terms are the nearest figure. Expires with a published field study.
- The shelf count reads our own listings. A listing that does not name Bafang may still use a Bafang motor, and one listing could not be read; if you need to know the motor on a listing, ask us. Recomputed at every update.
- Translations from Chinese and German are ours. The original wording is in the saved deposits and the citation ledger.
- Wang Qinghua's current term as chairman and general manager runs to October 12, 2026 (2025 annual report, page 23). Re-read Bafang's board announcements after that date.
- Unit sales stop at 2025. Expires when Bafang files its 2026 annual report.
- The IEC's own page describes the IP code only in outline. The test conditions behind each grade are in the paid standard IEC 60529, which we did not read, and IEC's site refused our direct requests on October 2, 2026, so its page is cited in an archived copy of August 14, 2026. Expires if the standard is read.
- The question panel ran on one AI engine, and the search-suggestion harvest did not saturate within its three passes. Expires at the next panel run.
- Bafang's list of e-bike brands is a 2020 to 2023 record. Its last archived copy with a list is dated June 9, 2023, and the address has answered "The page you visited does not exist" since December 2023, so it shows which brands Bafang named then, not which use its parts now. Expires if Bafang publishes a new list.
- Two undated Bafang blog posts are dated by us, from the upload dates in their own image file names: February 2023 for the T&D post and June 2023 for the shaft-drive post. Expires if Bafang dates them.
