Why the Grandtan Turbo
Why a mid-drive matters on a trike
A hub motor pushes the wheel directly and only has one gear: its own. A mid-drive pushes the cranks, so every one of the Shimano 7-speed's gears becomes a motor gear too — downshift and the Bafang unit spins easy and pulls hard, exactly what a loaded trike wants on a grade. That's the whole $1,000 argument, and for hilly ZIP codes it's a good one.
Torque sensor plus a real gearbox
The torque sensor reads how hard you're pedaling and scales the motor to match, through five assist levels on the Bafang LCD. With the throttle capped at 20 mph and the differential sorting the rear axle in corners, the Turbo is quick without ever feeling nervous — the point of a trike, kept.
Tektro at every wheel, parking brake included

Straight answers before you order
A mid-drive works the chain and freewheel harder than a hub motor, and Addmotor's warranty excludes wear items.
That is the physics of routing 1000W through the gears — the same routing that climbs what stalls a hub. Shift with a light pedal touch, budget a chain a season under heavy use, and the 2-year motor warranty itself is Addmotor's standard term, with Redtail filing any claim for you.

The Bafang display runs its own assist logic, and with a torque sensor the motor meters itself against your pedal pressure — on a mid-drive, five well-spaced levels is how the system is designed to be ridden.
Only UL 2271 (battery) is claimed on the Turbo's page, where the base Grandtan claims UL 2849 as well.

Where Addmotor's own page prints more than one figure for the same spec, the table above carries the one we could verify twice, and this list names every such case and the figure we chose:
- Price: $3,399 is Addmotor's live price; no machine-readable pre-sale price is published, so no compare-at is listed.
- Assist levels: the Turbo's table says 5-level pedal assist where the hub Grandtans say 7 — a real difference that follows from the Bafang display/controller pairing, not a typo we've corrected.
- UL: this page claims UL 2271 only; the base Grandtan's page claims UL 2271 & 2849. Each page is quoted exactly.
- Range: the stat strip says '90 Miles (PAS1)' and the spec table 'Up to 85 miles' — Addmotor's own two figures; we print the strip's 90 with the table's 85 noted here, and either way their policy calls range an estimate.

Frequently asked questions
Mid-drive or hub — which Grandtan should I buy?
Ask one question: how steep and how loaded? Flat-to-rolling errands are fully served by the base Grandtan's 750W hub at $2,399. Real hills, heavy baskets, or a bigger rider tilt the answer to the Turbo — the mid-drive works through the gears, so it climbs at lower motor strain and stretches the same 960Wh battery further (Addmotor's own figures: up to 90 miles vs 85). The $1,000 difference is a geography question.
Is a mid-drive harder to live with?
Slightly, and honestly: the motor drives the chain, so the chain and freewheel wear faster than on a hub bike, and good shifting habits (ease the pedals as you shift) matter. Addmotor's warranty excludes wear items, so a chain is on you. In exchange you get better hill performance, better balance (the motor mass sits low and central), and a rear wheel that's just a wheel — flat repairs are simpler.
What's the real range?
Addmotor publishes 'up to 90 miles' at PAS 1 on the stat strip and 'up to 85 miles' in the spec table — both their figures, both labeled estimates by their own warranty page. Throttle-heavy riding with a loaded basket will land well under half the ceiling. The honest planning number for mixed riding is 35–45 miles, and the 960Wh pack recharges overnight on the included charger.
Why does it have fewer assist levels than the cheaper model?
The Turbo runs Bafang's display and assist logic (5 levels); the hub Grandtans run Addmotor's own 7-level system. Five wider steps versus seven narrower ones — in practice, the torque sensor smooths both systems, and no reviewer of ours has missed levels six and seven on a 20 mph trike. We flag it because the spec tables differ, and quoting differences is the policy here.
Can I take it on gravel and dirt?
Its published brief is exactly that: 4-inch fat tires, an 80mm oil-spring fork, a differential to keep both rear wheels driving on loose ground, and a 20 mph cap that keeps three-wheel handling calm. It is not a mountain-trail machine — no trike is — but graded gravel, packed dirt, and rough farm lanes are inside the design.
