Freesky Ranger Air M-540
Thirteen hundred dollars buys the cheapest way into a dual-motor fat bike. Two 2,000W peak motors, a 48V 25Ah pack, four-piston hydraulic brakes and full suspension on a step-through frame. Freesky rates the Ranger Air M-540 at 34 mph and 60–105 miles. It is an off-road machine, not a bike-path one.
- 4,000WPeak power
- 210N·mTorque
- 25AhBattery
- 34 mphMfr. top speed

Every figure above is Freesky's own published specification for the Ranger Air M-540, read from www.freeskycycle.com/products/ranger-air-m-540 on 2026-08-24. Manufacturer claims, not Redtail test results — we label them that way rather than dress them up.

Who the Ranger Air M-540 is for
Buy it if
- First-time dual-motor buyers who want two driven wheels without spending two thousand dollars
- Riders who want to step through rather than swing a leg over a 95 lb bike
- Loose surfaces — sand, gravel, wet grass — where a second driven wheel does the work a single hub motor cannot
- Households sharing one bike: the 5'4"–6'8" fit range is the widest in the Freesky line
Skip it if
- You need a road-legal e-bike. 34 mph puts this outside every US class, and no amount of setup changes that
- You want assist that responds to effort — this is a speed (cadence) sensor, so it reacts to pedal rotation
- You have to carry it. 95 lb is a two-person lift onto a hitch rack
- You want the fastest Freesky. This is the entry point of the range, and the Ranger Plus above it is the same frame with more of everything
The Ranger Air M-540 in detail

Two motors, front and rear
Freesky specifies 2000W+2000W brushless peak motors, 105 N·m each. The reason to want that on this bike is not top speed — it is traction. A single rear hub spins up on loose ground; two driven wheels put the power down through both contact patches. On sand and wet grass the difference is not subtle.

48V 25Ah, and what the range figure means
Freesky rates 60–105 miles and charges the pack in 6–8 hours on the supplied US 3A smart charger. Treat the low end as the honest number: 105 miles assumes light assist and a light rider on flat ground. Throttle work, hills and cold weather all take from it.

Four-piston hydraulics, 180 mm
180 mm rotors with four-piston hydraulic calipers, front and rear. On a 95 lb bike carrying a rider at speed, two-piston brakes are the component that gives up first. These are the right specification for the mass, and they are the same brakes fitted to bikes $600 further up this range.

Full suspension and 26 × 4.0 fat tires
Downhill full suspension front and rear on 26.0" × 4.0" fat tires. The tires do as much as the suspension here — at low pressure a four-inch casing smooths out washboard and lets the bike float on soft ground instead of digging in.

Step-through, and who it fits
Freesky quotes a 5'4"–6'8" rider range, the widest in the line, on a 30.9 × 300 mm alloy seatpost with a Shimano 7-speed at the back. The step-through frame matters more than it sounds on a bike this heavy: you are not lifting a leg over 95 lb of bike and rack.
The honest ledger
Green flags
- Brakes are the real thing: 180MM 4-piston Hydraulic Brakes. Four-piston hydraulics on a bike this heavy is not a given at this price.
- Suspension: Front and Rear Suspension, with a Downhill Full Suspension.
- The complete-system UL 2849 certificate exists, names this model on its face, and we link the PDF — not a badge image.
- Rated to carry 400 lbs.
- Charging time: 6–8 hours.
Red flags
- At 34 mph assisted, this is outside every US e-bike class. Off-road and private land, not bike paths.
- Freesky publishes peak wattage only — no rated figure. Under our own rating system an undisclosed specification scores zero, and we do not guess at it.
- It weighs 95 lbs. Getting it onto a hitch rack is a two-person job.
- Cadence (speed) sensor rather than a torque sensor — assist comes on with pedal rotation, not with how hard you push.
What Freesky publishes about certification
A badge image on a product page is not a certificate. Below is what the certificate document itself says — issuer, number, standard edition, the models printed on its face — and what it does not cover. Every PDF is hosted by us, so the link will still work if Freesky reorganises their files.
UL 2849 (complete e-bike electrical system)
CoveredTÜV SÜD America certificate U14 128702 0008 Rev. 00, issued 2025-07-31, names M-530, M-540, M-410, A-340 at a rated voltage of 47,19VDC. Tested to UL 2849:2020/R:2022-12 and CAN/UL 2849:2022. Read the certificate (PDF).
UL 2271 (battery pack)
CoveredTÜV SÜD America certificate U10 128702 0003 Rev. 00, issued 2025-04-03, covers battery FP4825R0 at 47.19Vd.c., 24.5Ah — the pack this bike ships with. Read the certificate (PDF).
All 3 UL 2271 battery certificates in this range — certificate no. U10 128702 0001 Rev. 00, U10 128702 0003 Rev. 00, U10 128702 0009 Rev. 00 — carry the same remark on their face: “The battery is used for off-road LEVs.” That is the certifying body describing the intended use, not our characterisation of it.
Speed and the law
Outside the federal and state e-bike definitions — off-road and private land
Freesky rates this bike at 34 mph under pedal assist. The federal low-speed electric bicycle definition (15 U.S.C. § 2085) and every state three-class framework stop at 28 mph, so this machine sits outside them on speed alone — before wattage is even reached. It is not a Class 1, 2 or 3 e-bike, and we will not sell it as one.
Freesky does not publish a rated (nominal) motor wattage for any bike in this range; the figures they publish are peak. The statutory tests are written against the rated figure, so the wattage limb of those tests cannot be run on published data. We say that rather than substitute the peak number, which would be the wrong number.
Freesky's own manual puts it this way: “laws regulating the use of battery-operated bicycles on public roads, parks, and other open areas may vary by state and locality. It is important to consult with your local authorities before riding your e-bike in public areas.” Buy it for private land, OHV areas, and anywhere motor-vehicle rules allow. Check your own state and city before you ride it anywhere public — and ask us, we will put the answer in writing.
We publish a state-by-state e-bike law hub, and if you want your own state answered in writing before you order, ask us and we will put it in an email you can keep.
How to read this spec sheet
Peak, not rated
Freesky publishes peak motor wattage on every model and a rated (nominal) figure on none of them — not on the product pages, not in the comparison table, not in any of the seven user manuals. Peak is the short-burst ceiling; rated is the continuous figure that statutes are written against. A Freesky peak number and another brand's rated number are two different quantities, and comparing them directly will mislead you.
Range is a range for a reason
Every range figure here is Freesky's, quoted as a span. Plan around the bottom of it. Rider weight, terrain, temperature, tyre pressure and throttle use all take from the top.
Top speed is unloaded
Manufacturer top speeds are measured under favourable conditions. They are useful for comparing models within a range and much less useful as a promise about your commute.
Size and fit
Freesky quotes a rider-height range of 5'4"–6'8" for the Ranger Air M-540, on a 30.9*300MM Alloy Seatpost. That is the manufacturer's fit window, not a guarantee — if you are near either end of it, tell us your inseam and we will tell you honestly whether it will work.

What we counted
Measured by Redtail
We pulled Freesky's entire published catalogue on 2026-08-24 — all 60 products and every variant — and counted what could actually be bought that day. Freesky could sell 30 of its own 38 published bike configurations on the pull date — 79%. 0 of its 10 bike models had no buyable colourway at all.
Across the accessory and parts range, 108 of 136 variants were buyable. We mirror that availability daily rather than list a colour nobody can ship — which is why some options on this page may be greyed out today and back tomorrow.
Between 2026-08-23 and 2026-08-24 three Camouflage colourways rose $50, one accessory went out of stock, and one product was withdrawn from the catalogue entirely. That is why this page is re-checked daily rather than copied once.
Warranty
Buy the bike from Redtail and Redtail handles the claim. Send photos or video of the issue with your order number and we take it from there — we file and manage the claim with Freesky on your behalf, and we do not send you to the manufacturer to argue it yourself.
Who covers you
Freesky's published warranty says, in its own words: “This warranty applies only to products purchased directly from the official FREESKY website (www.freeskycycle.com).” and directs buyers from authorised dealers to “their respective warranty policies”. Redtail is a dealer — so the cover on your bike is Redtail's, and the claim comes to us.
What Freesky stands behind
- Motor, battery and controller: 24 months (orders on or after 13 November 2025); 18 months before that date
- All other components: 12 months
- The applicable warranty period begins on the original purchase date.
What is excluded
- Consumables and wear parts — tyres, tubes, brake pads, cables and housing, grips, chain, spokes
- Incorrect assembly, water damage, accidents, or improper or negligent use
- Operation or maintenance contrary to the product's maintenance instructions
- Defects inherent to the normal service life of the product
Freesky's warranty terms as published at www.freeskycycle.com/pages/warranty-policy, read 2026-08-24. Reproduced as context for what the manufacturer stands behind; your cover is Redtail's.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Freesky Ranger Air M-540 street legal?
No. Freesky rates it at 34 mph under pedal assist, and the federal low-speed electric bicycle definition and every state three-class framework stop at 28 mph. It is an off-road and private-land machine. Check your own state and city before riding it anywhere public — ask us and we will put the answer in writing.
What is the real range of the Ranger Air M-540?
Freesky publishes 60–105 miles. That is the manufacturer's figure, not our test result, and we do not dress it up as one. The low end is the number to plan around: hills, throttle use, rider weight and cold all reduce it.
Is the Ranger Air M-540 UL certified?
Yes, at both levels. TÜV SÜD America certificate U14 128702 0008 covers the M-540 under UL 2849 for the complete electrical system, and certificate U10 128702 0003 covers the FP4825R0 24.5Ah battery under UL 2271. We link both PDFs on this page rather than showing a badge.
How much does the Ranger Air M-540 weigh?
95 lb. That is a two-person lift onto a hitch rack, and worth planning for before you buy — a rack rated for a 95 lb bike is a different purchase from a standard one.
What is the difference between the Ranger Air and the Ranger Plus?
Same step-through frame, same 95 lb, same brakes and tires. The Plus steps up to 2500W+2500W peak motors, a 30Ah pack and 40 mph against this bike's 34, for $550 more. The Plus also takes 8–10 hours to charge against the Air's 6–8.
Does the Ranger Air M-540 have a throttle?
Freesky lists the mode for this model as pedal assist. We state what the manufacturer publishes and no more — if throttle behaviour is the deciding factor for you, ask us before ordering and we will confirm it in writing with Freesky.
The bottom line
At $1,299 this is the most bike-for-money in the Freesky range, and the certification behind it is real and checkable. Buy it if you have land to ride it on. Do not buy it as a commuter — 34 mph is outside every US e-bike class, and we would rather lose the sale than have you find that out from a police officer.
